MOJO magazine in the UK has a special, quarterly collectors edition. The WINTER 2000 edition seems to be having quite a love affair with David! There are stacks of db, and db related stories. Here is the first:

A wonderful photograph of David heads a feature titled WELL HUNG! 10 top photographers were asked to select their favourite images. Tim Bret-Day tells the secret of how they managed to set db on fire!

"We shot Bowie and then made a dummy of him and set the whole thing alight. Lee Stewart did the rest in post-production. It's the whole thing of burning the old - that was then, but this is what I'm doing now."

"We came up with a few different concepts, all with a religious motif. This image is the strongest, as it symbolises the crucifixion."

On working with Bowie, he had this to say:

"He's a comic genius, really funny. He was open to suggestions and had some input."

My West Teaser

Ever heard of the film "My West?" Unless you live in Italy, probably not. The Spaghetti Western was shot two years ago in Tuscany, Italy, and stars David as a malevolent gunslinger out to challenge bad-guy-gone-good Harvey Keitel to a duel.

The film was an Italy only release with some priceless moments with David as gunslinger. Here's the first of several clips which will follow later this week. Click the link below corresponding to your connection!

Baby Universal

HELLO Spacegirl

Those of you that watch the MBs will have spotted my posting of the above in the early GMT hours of this morning. The UK magazine, HELLO!, has a world exclusive on this one, and what a coup it is. Nineteen brand new pictures of David, Iman and Alexandria spread across as many pages. Such a beautiful family, never seen a happier looking trio. And the picture of Alex by herself is impossibly cute...gorgeous smile. That girl's gonna break a lot of hearts!

The UK press made a big deal of the pictures too. Click on the HELLO! cover above to see articles from The Daily Mirror, The Sun and The Daily Mail. Most of them went with the same quote from David: ?It is amazing how a new child can refocus one?s direction seconds after its birth. Everything falls into a feeling of rightness.?

The magazine itself pictures David and Iman in some wonderfully natural settings, including one of David bottle-feeding Alex, (well how else could he be feeding her?) while Iman looks proudly on. Another pictures David laying in front of open doors to a view of Central Park, cradling the baby protectively upon his chest. These are sensitive and genuinely heart-warming pictures that will have you all cooing without doubt. Yes, even you Kelmar!

There are some priceless quotes from both parents. Iman: "I don't think you could describe David as a New Man because, helpful as he is, I get the feeling that he's really waiting for the time when he can start reading and drawing and teaching her things." And this from David: "When she was born the doctor's first comment was, 'My goodness, David, you've given her your entire gene pool.'"

David also used this opportunity to clear up something about an infrequent visitor to the chat room who has used the name Dungarees in the past, and only last night came into chat as Simdun: "There's a lot of confusion over his name isn't there? Well, let's set it straight. My son's full real name is Duncan Zowie Haywood (Jones). As a toddler he was called by his second name Zowie. But it was such an identifiable name during the Seventies that if I called him loudly in public places, everyone would turn to stare, so I started calling him Joey to take the pressure off. It has the same sound and number of syllables as Zowie. And Joe stuck for most of his childhood. Now he has reverted to his real name, Duncan. Haywood was my father's name." So now you know!

HELLO! is on sale from today (despite a cover date of September 19th). The older fans among you may remember that the magazine exclusively covered David's marriage to Iman eight years ago. Hopefully we will be able to bring you more pictures from the piece once this issue is off the news stands. Aaaaawwwwwrrr, innit nice? :-))

Bleed Like A Craze, Dad

Does my bum look big in this?

As reported on www.bowieart.com last week, new Channel 4 arts programme, Frontal, featured a piece on controversial artist Lee Wagstaff. Lee exhibited his art by standing on a rotating plinth while wearing just a loincloth to preserve his modesty. If you haven't guessed yet, Lee Wagstaff is his art. His body is the canvas which, while a work-in-progress right now, is nearing completion. Go here for more, and click on the image above to see what David Bowie had to say about The Illustrated Man himself.

Vitamin C

Recent pop sensation Vitamin C (Colleen Fitzpatrick) has been burning up the pop charts with a tune about leaving high school behind, and moving forward into "the real world". What her fans might not realize is that the Vitamin's "Graduation (Friends Forever)" song is...ahem....highly influenced (?) by the Bowie-penned classic "All The Young Dudes." Be sure to check out the opening line, which also includes a mention of what it's like to be 25. Coincidence? Thanks nnmaddox!!!

Rolling Stone Portraits

This snazzy illustration appears in Rolling Stone's compilation of the best paintings, caricatures, and drawings ever to grace their pages. Award-winning art director Fred Woodward has created a mesmerizing compendium that serves as a who's who of the illustration world, matching the talents of Ralph Steadman, Milton Glaser, and Philip Burke with famous faces like those of Patty Hearst, Bob Dylan, Kurt Cobain and David Bowie. Snippets of interviews with both the subjects and the artists illuminate the subjective and interpretive process of illustration. ("I've tried to control my image, but my flesh keeps failing to cooperate," says Pete Townshend.) Featuring over 100 boldly colored illustrations, Rolling Stone: The Illustrated Portraits not only captures the gamut of personalities and figures who have shaped the last quarter of the century but does so with the originality and style that is quintessentially Rolling Stone.

Bowie Play A Hit

He's in the best selling show...

If you haven't already caught Adrian Berry's wonderful play about an anorexic's fixation with David Bowie, 'From Ibiza to The Norfolk Broads', and you are without tickets for the coming week, then I'm afraid you're not likely to get to see it before the end of its run next Saturday the 16th. Glowing reviews across the board have ensured the complete sell out of the play. This feat no doubt helped by the fact that the play is Time Out's Critics' Choice in the current issue. I will be posting my own review once Adrian can squeeze me in for a photo-shoot of the cast in situ. In the meantime go here for a tiny sample of some of those press quotes. Well done to Adrian and the cast and all of those who have helped make the play a success.

Starlab

There is a four page feature in the Sunday Times magazine this week, about Starlab, www.starlab.org, the research lab, think tank, playground for scientists, which has been established in Brussels by entrepreneur Walter De Brouwer. Their idea is to value scientists highly and place them in an environment where their skills can flourish.

The legend "100 years is but a moment in time" is above their door and on their homepage.

This is an incredibly futuristic organisation, looking at such areas as cold fusion, time travel, blending disciplines (such as atoms, neurons, genomes), artificial societies, immune systems and research on the margins of the 'born' and the 'made', among many others.

And the music on the switchboard answering machine? - ZIGGY STARDUST!!

He's In The Best Selling Show

This month's Q Magazine has a feature on the best 'Best Of...' albums of all time. They say :-

'The truly great, 'greatest hits' acts as a souvenir, CV, and 'good record'. Hard to do, but these twelve make it look easy.

David Bowie : The Singles Collection is chosen as one of the top twelve.

'The best thing about any Bowie compilation, no matter where you stick the pin in his career, is the sheer variety of stuff on offer.'

'Best Moment : The bit where he lets rip in Heroes, thus triggering producer Tony Visconti's staggered three microphone set up.'

Look out for next month's Q Magazine, which will be on sale from Oct 1st. There is likely to be a two page spread review of the Bowie At The Beeb album ,and also a compilation CD attached to the front of the magazine, Chill Out, which features 'quite the most pleasant 70 odd minutes of aural soothitude you've ever experienced'. There will be a db track included. Watch this space........

Gq Uk Bowie Collector's Cover

The Man Who Styled The World...

As you know from the piece that appeared in the news yesterday, us sniffy Brits (I've got your number son, recognise that style anywhere!) have voted David Bowie Most Stylish Man of the Year. In celebration of these annual awards, GQ magazine have produced four different covers, one of which our man Bowie glares most stylishly from. The three other 'Men' that each adorn a cover are Richard Ashcroft, Johnny Vaughan and, erm..., Liz Hurly!

A four page piece inside the magazine puts David forward as the 'New Sinatra', a comparison that our favourite crooner is not wholly uncomfortable with: "I do relate to Sinatra in that my tours are getting fewer and fewer. I don't tour just for the sake of touring any more. If you see me live these days you know I want to be doing it." Not many reading this could disagree with the latter part of this statement, isn't it obvious he is having a ball?

Elsewhere in the interview David gives a forthright assessment of awards in general: "The question I always ask is: would I have been given this award if I didn't do the interview and photo session?...I'm not one for awards at all. Most of the music awards are on the basis of, if you turn up, you'll get it. And I say, fine, I don't want it. If you want me to have it, give it to me and I might surprise you and turn up. Otherwise, f*** off! But if your readers have chosen me...then I feel privileged, it's pretty marvellous." Here! Here!

Insides

After the 'Nomad Soul' rave in The Times yesterday, it seems Bowie hasbeen validated yet again. This time in The Sunday Times no less. When in1994 Bowie wrote a short weird story for Q magazine around the idea ofthe paganism of art (which was to become 1995's Outside album) it wasuniversally derided for being pretentious and at least an outlandishproposition. Now we see the future. Reading this story one would believethat what Bowie proposed is just that little bit nearer to reality.

Covers Coverage

Irish R&B artist Samantha Mumba's new single "Body 2 Body" will be released in the UK on Oct 9th. The song includes a blatant sample of David's Number 1 hit "Ashes To Ashes" (in fact, it's more of a cover version). The video was rumoured to be directed by db but these rumors have proven untrue. In other Bowie/Sampling news, Glamma Kid's album "Kidology" was released on Monday, September 4th. The album includes a ragga version Fashion! Oh! Thanks Aleczandah!
