Brian Eno Produces U2 Album; Single Released

U2 have been hard at work in the recording studio for the past year preparing for the October release of their new album All That You Can't Leave Behind. Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois have produced the album, helping sculpt U2's sound to a purportedly more stripped-down rock feel. Brian, who appears on some 14 of Bowie's albums, has worked with U2 since their third album, The Unforgettable Fire. Preview the album's first single, Beautiful Day by clicking the link below from Interscope Records.

Happy Labor Day!

That's right, here in the states, it's Labor Day, so hats off to workers around the world! In case you're one of the many who's not sure exactly what this holiday is about, good 'ol Mr. Gompers (aka Uncle Sam?) has provided us with a little synopsis: ;) "Labor Day differs in every essential from the other holidays of the year in any country," said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. "All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation." Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country. Chances are this is more than enough, but if you're still curious, by all means - read on!

Grandaddy At Reading Festival

Dave's latest rave, GRANDADDY, got a great review from NME for their set at Reading Festival. It reads:

"With perfect timing, Grandaddy begin 'Summer Here Kids' just as the wind starts to blow in from the Urals. Still, its pure jubilation, today's first glimpse of true songwriting magic glinting from behind their beards. Lovely flushes of colour, sudden keyboard growth spurts - the sounds might have clouded over but 'Hewlett's Daughter', 'Crystal Lake' and a magnificent 'AM 180' shine as bright as ever. Relaxxx."

Dotmusic.com has another review of the performance, and obviously they agree. Click here here to check it out!

Songs That Have 'helped' Oasis

What can I do for you? Looks like you've been there too...

In the current issue of NME, self-confessed Bowie fan, Noel from Oasis, talks us through ten songs "...that changed his life and gave Oasis their chords." We all remember the rather pedestrian version of 'Heroes' that the band treated us to some time back, but it seems this wasn't the only Bowie song that Noel has 'enjoyed'. Followers of Oasis and lovers of the popular parlour game 'Spot That Tune', will not be surprised to learn that a David Bowie composition was among the songs that have 'inspired' Noel.

No.9 Rebel Rebel - David Bowie

"....I'd imagine that if you were a 13 or 14-year-old girl in the early '70s, this record would have been pretty much a life-changing experience. It contains one of the best riffs. This was a sound that I was pretty obsessed with for a long time."

In Part Two, Noel will discuss how 'All The Young Dudes' also helped him through a few artistic blocks...allegedly! };-)

The Return Of Placebo!!

Exclusive Interview for BowieNet Members!!

Remember Placebo? Their relationship with David goes back to 1996, before they were famous. David was given a demo by Virgin records, loved their work, nagged at them to put out 'Nancy Boy', invited them to tour with him on the Outside and Earthling tours, performed '20th Century Boy' with them at the 1999 Brit Awards, guested on their single 'Without You I'm Nothing' in 1999, and also performed on stage with them in New York in the same year.

On the eve of the release of their third album, BLACK MARKET MUSIC, Placebo have agreed to an exclusive interview for Bowienet! Members can submit questions, and we will choose the best ones for the interview, which will take place at the end of September.

The band last chatted with Bowienet members in March 1999, just before David joined them onstage in New York.

Click here for full details, including a transcript of the last chat and to submit your questions.

David Bowie Is No Dummy!

...but Saint Alphonzo certainly can be!

Hi, it's Saint Alphonzo here. What follows is a repost of yesterday's segment by Blammo - only this time in its entirety! Sorry about botching your post, Blam! I'm only, hu...er....saintly?!?   =8-)

While we are on the subject of Sunday publications, British 'Newspaper of the Year', The Sunday Telegraph (August 13th), had on its Arts pages, a feature headed 'Is it time for gottles of geer?'. As the more astute among you will have guessed, the article was about ventriloquists, with particular reference to their annual conference in Northern Kentucky. Having a passing interest in the art (mainly due to my fascination for the spooky dolls), I scanned through the eight pictures of vents and their puppets and was astonished to see a crazy-haired girl sporting an Aladdin Sane t-shirt with her hand up a full Earthling mode David Bowie puppet. And who exactly was that girl, you're probably not wondering? Go here to confirm your suspicions.

T J Newton Falls To Bbc2 This Saturday

It's a crash course for the ravers...

The Man Who Fell To Earth is being shown in widescreen format this Saturday (September 2nd) on BBC2 here in the UK. To celebrate the event The Radio Times have made David Bowie the subject of their regular 'Teach Yourself' feature in the new edition of the popular listings magazine. Click on the image above to see what crucial facts made their final list, not all of them wholly accurate of course. No doubt I won't be able to resist watching it for the 387th time, but seeing as the film continues into the early hours of Sunday the 3rd, what nicer way could I spend the first hours of my 40th birthday. No that isn't a hint...it's a blatant plug! };-)

Win Rare Beeb Sampler Now

For your chance to win not only one of ten copies of the beauty pictured above, but also one of ten even rarer CDRs of the third limited CD from the BEEB set, all you have to do is answer the question below and send your answer to MrTotalBlamBlam@aol.com with a subject heading of 'Kooks'.

Here we go...In June of 1971 David Bowie and friends performed a set for John Peel's In Concert programme. Among the songs performed was the recently written 'Kooks', of which a rather nervous David had this to say:

"I'd been listening to a Neil Young album, and they phoned through and said that my wife had a had a baby on Sunday morning. I wrote this about the baby. It's called Kooks...K, double o, k, s...I'm not too sure of the words, 'cos it is new...so I'll have a go at it."

David's uncertainty of the words is where you come in. This early version of 'Kooks' had an extra line that never appeared on the Hunky Dory recording. What I want to know from you is, what was that line?...A small clue is that it followed the line: "And if the homework brings you down, then we'll throw it on the fire and take the car down town."

First ten correct answers win. Good luck!
