04 Cactus
05 China Girl
06 Fall Dog Bombs The Moon
07 Hallo Spaceboy
08 Sunday
09 Under Pressure
10 Ashes To Ashes

17 "Heroes"
18 Heathen (The Rays)

Five Firsts For Second Paris Show

DB strumming a twelve-string during last night's show.

Paris: 15 million and 30...*

David Bowie's second show at the Bercy may have been a little shorter than the previous evening, but it was certainly no less of a show for that. Last night's gig was particularly enjoyable for those who have been following the tour, as there were five songs performed last night for the first time on the tour.

Those songs were: All The Young Dudes, I've Been Waiting For You, and three songs from Low: Sound And Vision, Be My Wife and Always Crashing In The Same Car.

David's wish to rock things up a little became apparent when he stopped Breaking Glass about a minute in, only to start it again at a far 'thrustier' pace. Anyway, here are the 22 songs that were played:

Paris October 21st 2003

01 New Killer Star
02 Pablo Picasso
03 All The Young Dudes
04 I've Been Waiting For You
05 Fame
06 Cactus
07 China Girl
08 Hallo Spaceboy
09 Under Pressure
10 Fashion
11 Afraid
12 Days
13 Sound And Vision
14 Breaking Glass
15 Be My Wife
16 Ashes To Ashes
17 I'm Afraid Of Americans
18 "Heroes"
19 Heathen (The Rays)

(Encore)
20 Always Crashing In The Same Car
21 Hang On To Yourself
22 Ziggy Stardust

We hope to launch a new A Reality Tour section on BowieNet shortly, that will not only be home to reviews and a few of my snaps from the shows, but also some great little bits of footage and some of your pictures and reviews too. Stay tuned for updates.

* OK, I admit 15million and thirty has nothing to do with the actual 18,000 capacity of Bercy... but I had to use Paris in the lyric quote somehow, and I refused to use the line from Aladdin Sane again!

Times Review Of Last Night's Paris Show

David Bowie strips for action at the Bercy last night.

Does he fly like Mr. Superman, speak Chinese, French and Dutch?*

David Bowie's A Reality Tour rolled into Paris last night, for the first of two dates at the Bercy. David was in high spirits, peppering the evening with displays of his perfect command of French with, for example, the announcement of 5:15 The Angels Have Gone as "cinq fifteen The Angels Have Gone"!

David Bowie removes even more clobber... where will it end?

The set list was almost identical to Saturday's Frankfurt show, but with the addition of DB's and Gerry's beautiful re-working of Loving The Alien to the main set, and the ommision of Slip Away and Pablo Picasso from the encore. Here's the full 25-song set:

Paris October 20th 2003

01 The Jean Genie
02 New Killer Star
03 Fame
04 Cactus
05 China Girl
06 Fall Dog Bombs The Moon
07 Hallo Spaceboy
08 Sunday
09 Under Pressure
10 White Light, White Heat
11 Ashes To Ashes
12 Fashion
13 Never Get Old
14 The Motel
15 5:15 The Angels Have Gone
16 Loving The Alien
17 Battle For Britain (The Letter)
18 I'm Afraid Of Americans
19 "Heroes"
20 Heathen (The Rays)

(Encore)
21 Bring Me The Disco King
22 Changes
23 Let's Dance
24 Suffragette City
25 Ziggy Stardust

"But we can move like tigers on Vaseline"

The Times and The Financial Times in the UK have published the following review by Paul Sexton, which I have illustrated with a few more of my snaps:

Never motivated by half-measures, David Bowie's first world tour proper since 1995 has 17 countries in its sights over a seven-month campaign. On record, too, he is in his most productive form for a decade, with a fine new album, Reality.

The tour arrived in France this week, eight shows into a 32-date European leg that comes to Britain in mid-November. Bowie is 56, but has an almost teenage enthusiasm and vigour. Rarely can a rock legend have been sighted having such brazen fun with his own past without descending into nostalgia for its own sake.

"OK you lot, hands up those of you that think you can catch me."

The vast Palais Omnisports, an 18,000-capacity sellout, is the kind of hangar in which good entertaining intentions can fade. But with the sonic choreography of a brilliantly cohesive band, a 135-minute concert became an intimate party.

Encouraged by the arch-chameleon's own use of the word "reality", much has been made of the absence of theatrical artifice in his present persona. If this is indeed the real David Bowie, he's as congenial a host as you'd wish to meet, popping out for random house calls on his previous characters as the old friends he now considers them to be.

"And on vocals and guitar... no it's not Brian Setzer... David Bowie!"

Hence a storming start with "Jean Genie", the lean and elegant frontman blowing some edgy harmonica, and a chunky "Fame", punctuated by "New KillerStar".

Way above the stage, five small video screens offered a sparing selection of pre-filmed images and effects, as "China Girl", "Ashes To Ashes", "Fashion" and other classics were happily assimilated amid the recent "Cactus", "The Motel" and the after-hours jazz sophistication of "Bring Me The Disco King".

The audience at Bercy get the point last night in Paris.

The closing "Suffragette City" and "Ziggy Stardust" were presented with affection, not obligation, by an artist who has introduced his past to his future with compelling effect.

Good stuff, eh? Stay tuned for more pictures and the set list from tonight's second show sometime tomorrow.

* Well, two out of four ain't bad.

Ngo Double-a Side Is Radio 2 Single Of The Week

Just playing that latest record... Part 5

Radio 2 has selected the double A side, Never Get Old / Waterloo Sunset as Single Of The Week. This is great news, as Radio 2 is the most listened to station in the UK and the SOTW obviously receives very heavy rotation... Indeed, as I type this Never Get Old is playing!

Let's hope this turns even more people on to the release here in the UK. You can listen to Radio 2 live online by clicking on the image above.

Win Never Get Old 2-track Promo - Part Two

He looks me in the eye and he says he?s got his mind on a countdown 3-2-1...

Wow, this is a popular contest... I don't think I'll ever figure you lot out. So, on to part two. Firstly, if you didn't even know there was a part one yet, check out last Sunday's news. (10/12/03 NEWS: WIN NEVER GET OLD 2-TRACK PROMO CD SINGLE)

BowieNetter Thomass72 has come up with a nice Reality-related question for the second part of this contest. It may seem initially difficult, but I know the great majority of you will have no problem getting to the bottom of this one... so here goes:

There are two songs on the Reality album that both contain an almost identical sentence. This same line also appeared in a Jacques Brel song that David first covered to great effect over thirty years ago. What is that line?

Thanx for that Thomass72... good one.

Once you've figured it out kidz, send your answer to me at TotalBlamBlam@davidbowie.com with a subject line of: NGO Part 2... Usual rules apply, if you can't mail from your BowieNet account, you MUST supply your BowieNet user name, only one entry per member, etc.

Come back next Sunday the third and final part of this contest.

Tonight In Frankfurt - With Susans And Mirearth

David Bowie gets lost in a Frankfurt forest by Miriam Geelhoed.

Sunshine entered our Frankfurt day...

David Bowie and his band played a scorching, nay, high-octane (whatever that means) 26-song set in Frankfurt tonight. But seriously, it sounds like this was one of the stand-out shows of the tour so far, even if I did get my main confirmation of this fact from a gibbering BowieNetter who goes by the name of Susans.

You all know Susans for her hardcore worship of our man, and tonight her loyalty was rewarded with the dedication of Suffragette City to her and Gail Ann. Well done girl, you deserve it... and thanx for the nightly set list confirmations.

Anyway, as I say, it was another one of those special shows tonight, which started not with NKS (for the first time so far) but with The Jean Genie, and it ended with the song that graced the flip-side of this very same 1972 45, Ziggy Stardust.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the drummer of The Pretty Things... Twink!!
Actually it's David Bowie leading the crowd in a Slip Away sing-a-long at the
Festhalle-Masse in Frankfurt earlier this evening. Photograph by Miriam Geelhoed.

It's good to see the return of Slip Away after its scary absence from the last show. Tonight's return was celebrated by David pointing his microphone in the direction of the very loud and appreciative sing-a-long audience. (See above)

Many thanx to BowieNetter Mirearth (aka Miriam Geelhoed) for the wonderful shots on this page... great stuff girl, keep 'em coming!

Here's that full 26-song set:

Frankfurt October 18th 2003

01 The Jean Genie
02 New Killer Star
03 Fame
04 Cactus
05 China Girl
06 Fall Dog Bombs The Moon
07 Hallo Spaceboy
08 Sunday
09 Under Pressure
10 White Light, White Heat
11 Ashes To Ashes
12 Fashion
13 Never Get Old
14 The Motel
15 5:15 The Angels Have Gone
16 Battle For Britain (The Letter)
17 I'm Afraid Of Americans
18 "Heroes"
19 Heathen (The Rays)

(Encore)
20 Bring Me The Disco King
21 Slip Away
22 Pablo Picasso
23 Changes
24 Let's Dance
25 Suffragette City
26 Ziggy Stardust

I'm going to be at the Paris shows on Monday and Tuesday, so please forgive me if I don't get a chance to tell you about it until Wednesday.

Tonight's Hamburg Set List

David Bowie points the finger in Hamburg this very evening.

Turn to the crossroads, and Hamburg...

A bit of a shorter set for Hamburg tonight, similar to last night's show in Rotterdam, but, with three songs being dropped. The most surprising of those omissions being Slip Away, (the other two being The Jean Genie and Try Some, Buy Some) and with no new songs added to the set list.

Anyway, it seems these changes did nothing to dampen the atmosphere of yet another great show at which the following 24 songs were performed:

Hamburg October 16th 2003

01 New Killer Star
02 Fame
03 Cactus
04 China Girl
05 Fall Dog Bombs The Moon
06 Hallo Spaceboy
07 Sunday
08 Under Pressure (followed by a snippet of Blur's Song 2)
09 White Light, White Heat
10 Ashes To Ashes
11 Fashion
12 Never Get Old
13 The Motel
14 5:15 The Angels Have Gone
15 Loving The Alien
16 I'm Afraid Of Americans
17 "Heroes"
18 Heathen (The Rays)

(Encore)
19 Bring Me The Disco King
20 Pablo Picasso
21 Changes
22 Let's Dance
23 Suffragette City
24 Ziggy Stardust

It's a day off tomorrow, but there's no rest for David as he is scheduled to do the Harald Schmidt Show in Cologne, (as Spaceface mentioned in yesterday's news) before the tour picks up again in Frankfurt on Saturday.

Bowie Rocks Rotterdam

Land Ahoy...Sailor spies the coast in Rotterdam, last night.

In the port of Rotterdam, There's a sailor who sings...

By all accounts David Bowie played the best set of the Reality tour so far when he "blew the roof off" of the Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam. I heard this description from many fans last night and this morning, who all described Bowie as being on top form and at his mischievous best.

The Jean Genie, Fashion and Try Some, Buy Some were aired for the first time on the tour, and David again performed a twenty-seven song set-list (first time since Copenhagen) which ran as follows:

Rotterdam October 15th 2003

01 New Killer Star
02 The Jean Genie
03 Fame
04 Cactus
05 China Girl
06 Fall Dog Bombs The Moon
07 Hallo Spaceboy
08 Sunday
09 Under Pressure
10 White Light, White Heat
11 Ashes To Ashes
(followed by a snippet of Blur's Song 2)
12 Fashion
13 Try Some, Buy Some
14 Never Get Old
15 The Motel
16 5:15 The Angels Have Gone
17 Loving The Alien
18 I'm Afraid Of Americans
19 "Heroes"
20 Heathen (The Rays)

(Encore)
21 Bring Me The Disco King
22 Slip Away
23 Pablo Picasso
24 Changes
25 Let's Dance
26 Suffragette City
27 Ziggy Stardust

You can read a Dutch-language review of the show entitled "Nederlandse fans blijven David Bowie trouw" here, and you can see more of Michel Utrecht's great pictures by clicking on the one above. But, if you'd rather an impression of the evening in English, (kind of) That hoary old pro, BowieNetter LizSK2, has sent in a few words that I thought I'd share with you:

Rotterdam 15th October 2003

So I thought I was doing 8 gigs on this tour? then I had an attack of madness and decided to go to Rotterdam one day before the gig. Smart move. I went to Copenhagen last week and had a fabulous time, my senses dazzled by this stage show and hearing Reality live plus the wonderful company of so many Bnetters.

Yesterday was better. Everything: it was more polished, the set list was more varied and the running order and flow of the show is down pat (after only 5 gigs no less!). We got there late so ended up about 10 rows back on the left. It?s funny to me now how that seems miles away. Before Poughkeepsie I?d seen each db gig from the back of a stadium and now, I admit, I?m totally spoiled!

I guess the one thing I was after, unattainable you might say when you went to Pough and Riverside, was surprises. Even having seen the show last week I still wanted them. Second song in? Jean Genie. And then Fashion. And then Try Some, Buy Some. First performances on the tour. Well, that?s sorted!

I was delighted that so many of the audience knew the Heathen songs, maybe I shouldn?t have been surprised. It is db?s highest profile and impact album in years. Slip Away has really become the great anthem from it for this tour...

Set list... well, we all have our opinions on it. Personally I?m over it: I could, as could you, choose a 50 song set list not played last night or any other on the tour. But what has been chosen fits completely with the band, the surroundings, the new album? I?d be happy if Reality was performed in entirety every night.

Having said that there were tunes that just about took the high roof off the Ahoy in Rotterdam: Suffragette City (brilliant as ever), Changes, China Girl, Ashes to Ashes, Let?s Dance etc. I was thrilled to hear The Motel (never heard it live before) and an exquisite Tibet gig style version of Loving the Alien.

Disco King has my vote for moment of the show as it stands: it?s not the easiest song to sing every night but he?s pulling it off with ease. And might I add looking hotter with each passing gig. Allow me the moment: tight sleeveless T-shirt. Say no more.

Having never travelled to see db live outside England I wondered if there was a point where I?d get fed up of hearing the same songs. After 4 gigs so far this year I can only say bring it on! I?m getting more excited with each passing show and feel a bit like a runner on starting blocks waiting for the gun to go off? next stop Frankfurt!

Liz Tray

Thanx Liz... I look forward to your Frankfurt thoughts.

George Underwood Exhibition Starts Next Week

Three pieces from George Underwood's current exhibition, Centaur, Minotour and The Cloak.

The paintings are all your own...

George Underwood has a new one-man-show at the Portal Gallery in London from 20th October to 8th November 2003. I know it's not great timing for many of you following the European tour right now, but if you can make it along, you really should make an extra big effort to see what is an incredible new collection by George.

You all know George's connection to David, and while this exhibition doesn't contain any works directly related to DB, you would be foolish to let that put you off attending the show. This is the same exhibition that David recommended very highly during his recent phone-in to the Jonathan Ross radio show.

You can view the pictures online by clicking on the image above and going to the exhibition section, but, please bear in mind that these online reproductions really don't do these works any justice. I have had the good fortune to see these works up close and the pictures online don't even hint at the vibrancy and richness of colour in these paintings.

But don't take my word for it, here's a few words from one of George's best mates, David Robert Jones:

George has, over the years, refined his work to the point where I would put him among the top figurative painters coming out of the UK right now. There's a sublime isolation surrounding his subjects that really touches the viewer, the figures being both heroic and vulnerable simultaneously.

There's a timeless element in the choice of subject matter that overlaps with the mythical world of Odd Nerdrum, say. Now that a huge shift to painting is taking place, I would expect to see George's name pushed further and further to the front.

As I say, the exhibition runs at the Portal Gallery in London's Piccadilly from Monday 20th October to Saturday 8th November 2003. Contact details below:

Special Dvd Edition Of Reality Due Next Month

It was a day in that blue month September...

Above is the sleeve of the special DVD edition of Reality scheduled for release next month. Due to overwhelming popular demand, Reality will be made available as a two-disc set that includes the album on CD and a region 2 encoded DVD of the Reality portion of last month's Riverside show.

Even though some may grumble that this means another purchase of Reality, this method was a cheaper way of making the DVD available to fans than releasing it as a stand alone DVD.

But, please do note that the DVD is region 2 only, and that it will include the songs from Reality only, not any of the other songs performed on the night.

We will endeavour to run another competition for copies of this great package when we announce the definite release date, which is set somewhere in the second half of November right now.

BowieNetter, ingridellevset, sent me a whole bunch of reviews from the show which she insists are all glowing. I'll have to take her word for it as, sadly, I don't read Norwegian. If you do, the links are below. Thanx so much for that ingridellevset, send me your address and we'll send you a little thank you.

Certainly the English-speaking fans think the shows are getting better and better as the tour progresses. So you lucky Bowie fans in Rotterdam on Wednesday should be in for something rather special... what's this tour going to be like by the time it reaches Glasgow?

Fabelaktig Bowie-show (A review in which both the readers and critics gave the show 6 out of 6)

Win Never Get Old 2-track Promo Cd Single

He looks me in the eye and he says he?s got his mind on a countdown 3-2-1...

As I think I may have mentioned in the news somewhere, Never Get Old will be the next single from Reality. While it isn't actually released until towards the end of November, we already have our grubby mitts on ten copies of the two-track promo for another exclusive BowieNet competition.

The final tracklisting for the commercial release of NGO isn't definite yet, but the additional track on the promo is David's brilliant cover of the Ray Davies song, Waterloo Sunset. As ever, there will most likely be regional variations on the release date and final tracklisting.

I've decided to run this competition over a period of three weeks to give those following the tour around Europe at least a chance of entering. This means the winners will still receive the CD a good few weeks before the official release date.

There will be three clues for this one with the first one being given today, (does the lyric quote above make sense now?) and the overall competition will end at noon on Sunday November 2nd. You need to answer each part of the competition correctly to be in with a chance of winning one of these valuable promos.

OK, on to the first question, and we'll start with an easy one. Below are ten anagrams of Never Get Old... except one of them isn't. All you need to do is tell me which one isn't an anagram of Never Get Old.

LODGER EVENT
TENDER GLOVE
LOVED REGENT
REVENGED LOT
LEVERED TONG
REVOLTED GEN
LEGEND TROVE
GOLDEN VOTER
TOLD REVENGE
LORD TEENVEG

Send your answer to me at TotalBlamBlam@davidbowie.com with a subject line of: NGO Part 1... Usual rules apply, if you can't mail from your BowieNet account, you MUST supply your BowieNet user name, only one entry per member, etc.

Come back next Sunday for part two of this contest.

New Bowienet Message Board Archive

Beginning Monday, October 13th (tomorrow) we will be implementing the New BowieNet Message Board Archive. The New Archive system will increase message board performance considerably. The message boards currently have 50,000 threads with almost HALF A MILLION individual posts! Over the course of the week, old message board threads will be moved to the Bowie Archive. The Archive will be accessible through the current message board navigation. Though we hope there will be no interruption in service while the Archive System is completed, obviously we can't promise such a thing, so please bear with us during this transition.

Uk Ticket Resolution From Bill Z

We?ve now had a chance to evaluate every alternative and have come to a conclusion as to what we are going to do. Before I go into detail, I want to thank everyone again for their patience during what has been nothing less than a painful process. As usual, we won?t be able to make everyone happy, but I believe we are offering the best and fairest alternative available to the members. As many of you know, production rehearsals and opening night were very important in determining the quality of seats on the side of the stage. While the lower seats in these sections are partially obstructed by staging elements, the higher rows are excellent seats. And while none of the lower rows were sold, many of you have expressed your dissatisfaction with what will be very good seats. So here goes.We have decided that rather than trade your seats for better ones, we would GIVE each of you with a ?bad? seat, up to 2 additional tickets.Just so we?re clear about the terms I?m using. The following sections are referred to as:Site Line Seats: London: 15,16,17,35,37 and 38Birmingham: 1 and 18Manchester: 101,201,116 and 216PL2 (Price level 2) London: 1,3,23 and 25Birmingham: 6,7,12 and 13Manchester: 207,208,209 and 210Floor Seats are obviously seats on the floor.I have released every good seat still being held by the local promoter. That includes press tickets, seats held for band guests and so-called ?re-locates?; seats held for people who are obstructed by sound and lighting boards that we bring in. In addition, I?ve asked that seats be added to the floor to the maximum allowed by law (so as not to violate any fire or other codes.)I don?t want to reward anyone who purchased a lower price ticket to a greater degree than someone who purchased a higher price ticket.Every person reporting dissatisfaction with a PL2 will be given up to 2 Site-Line seats. These may be partially obstructed, but they are very close to the stage and you will be able to see David sweat. You may do what you want with these. You may sit in either seat, you may give away a pair or you may sell your old tickets. While you have the right to, we request that you don?t sell your new tickets. As they were not paid for, depending on where you live, you may be violating local laws.We will relocate as many people as we can, starting from the worst Site Line Seat and rear of the Floor to the good floor seats being added. We will do this until we are out of tickets. We will try to accommodate everyone, but I can?t promise it at this time. Again, you may do what you wish with your other tickets. Here come the FAQ?sHow many people will get additional tickets? We clearly have enough Site Line seats (with some limited views) to accommodate all PL2?s. However, the exact number of PL1?s we are able to accommodate is still unknown.Who will decide what a ?bad? floor seat is?I will. Some people in the 10th row on the floor have asked if they are eligible for an upgrade. As soon as the worst new floor seat is not better than the next eligible PL1, we?re done. Why don?t you just give everyone extra tickets? We?re trying to help out members who were treated unfairly. Not create a 2 for 1 ticket program. How soon will we get our tickets? In about a week. I?ll let everyone know when they are being mailed out.Why are you only doing this for people who have contacted Ticketzone and not every ticket buyer?First of all, many of the members are scalpers and have already sold their tickets. We are not here to reward them. Many others have simply sold tickets to friends etc? The goal here is to help the BowieNet member who did not know the location of what he (or she) was buying. Anyone who purchased a ticket from a member already, knew what they were buying. How will you know where to send it?If you contacted Domingo with the information I asked you to give him, he knows where to send it.What do you mean up to 2 tickets? If you purchased 1 you?ll get 1. If you purchased 2 or more you will get 2.I know there will be a lot of people unhappy with the resolution here, but for most of you, there will be a vast improvement in your location. You will also be able to bring a couple of more friends with you. For others, you may be able to sell the first pair and come to the show as our guest. Either way, we hope you enjoy the shows and are sincerely sorry about the entire situation.
