Nks Dvd Single Winners

All my idiot questions...

I set this contest a couple of weeks back (09/29/03 NEWS: NKS DVD SINGLE OUT TODAY... WIN A COPY HERE) to win copies of the UK New Killer Star DVD single. Please excuse my tardiness in announcing the winners, but there was a delay in getting these prizes, and I wanted to be sure we had them before I announced the ten BowieNetters who have won a copy.

The good news is that a dozen copies actually turned up today, and the twelve BowieNetters below, who all correctly stated that Sigue Sigue Sputnik's Tony James first caught Ziggy live at the Polytechnic of Central London on May 12th 1972, will each be receiving a copy:

8 = Stu424
13 = kiless
36 = mendel
42 = pretty_thing
43 = traveler
50 = msyms
65 = gtrainer
74 = lruiz
78 = MandN
147 = tonyc
151 = pati
154 = theguyupstairs

If you're user name is in the list above, please send your name and address to me at TotalBlamBlam@davidbowie.com with a subject line of: UK NKS DVD Winner. Well done all...and stay tuned for another competition in the next couple of days.

New York Special In Tomorrow's S:2 Mag

New York's In Love...

Those of you in the UK that missed the Bowie special in New York magazine that we told you about last month (09/23/03 NEWS: DAVID WRITES FOR NEW YORK MAGAZINE) can catch up with the same feature in tomorrow's large format Sunday Express magazine, S:2.

Apart from the front cover (above) the three-page feature inside has archive pictures not used in the original New York magazine piece, including a double page spread shot of David on the deck of the QE2 from last year with the Manhattan skyline in the background. You can still read the original piece that David wrote for New York magazine here.

Elsewhere in the mag there is a great two-page Tony Visconti interview that focuses on his work with both David Bowie and Marc Bolan. The piece uses a half page colour shot of Bowie and Bolan's last ever performance together from the Marc show in 1977, shortly before Bolan's death.

The Best of Bowie also features in the regular Me And My Record Collection feature. This week's collection is compiled by accidental god of cool, David Dickinson, who had this to say about a chance encounter with our man back in 1971:

When Lorne was making records, I went to a meeting with Bowie's management company and bumped into him. As we waited in reception, we sat talking and he was very charming. He was wearing a long velvet coat and his hair was right down his back - a very different image to now.

S:2 magazine is available with the Sunday Express tomorrow.

Bowiephiles

The fisting of lifeto the music outside...

VH1 have a great new interview with David, available to read online, and also with a couple of video clips to watch. Here's a teaser:

VH1: Why have you stayed relevant where so many of the artists from the ?60s and ?70s haven?t?

DB: I can sit up straight and hold a cup of tea! [Laughs.] I don?t know. It has to be something to do with the fact that I?m really a rock fan. Before anything else, I love music and what other artists do. I love listening and buying CDs. I?m a fan! I really am! It?s my music, it?s the music that told me who I was when I was a teenager. I?ve grown up with it.

Click here to watch the clips, and read it all.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's a very special knowledge that you've got, my friend...

Another new interview is now available to read online at Billboard's website. Here's a quote from David about working on Reality:

We charged into 'Reality' absolutely gung-ho that we really could do what we used to do, which is produce a signature sound and an interesting construct that would sound not like anybody else's work. It would be identifiably a kind of a Bowie/Visconti production. It would just have that special thing that we have when we work together."

Bowie adds that he and Visconti are "already half-talking about the next album."

Click here for the whole thing.

Don't you wonder sometimes, 'bout sound and vision...

A brand new one-of-a-kind computer-generated musical and visual experience, Sonic Vision is available now at the Hayden Planetarium, American Museum Of Natural History. Moby has created the soundtrack for this groundbreaking digitally animated alternative music show which features David Bowie's music and is presented in conjunction with MTV2.

The show began on Friday October 3rd and will be presented every Friday and Saturday evening at 7:30, 8:30, 9:30, and 10:30 p.m., in the Hayden Planetarium at the Museum's Rose Center for Earth and Space.

Exclusive Five-song Bowie Session On Aol

We've got five songs, what a surprise...

Those AOL Broadband members among you that can't make tonight's show in Helsinki, can numb the pain a little by watching a five-song set recorded on September 23rd exclusively for Sessions@AOL Full Set.

David and the band perform New Killer Star, I'm Afraid Of Americans, Rebel Rebel, a lovely acoustic version of Fall Dog Bombs The Moon and Days. However, the session is not the easiest thing to find. Obviously you have to be an AOL Broadband member, log in to AOL and search AOL Music for Bowie, then click on AOL Music: Broadband Rocks.

Here's a bit from the official blurb I received:

All five songs go live today as part of Sessions@AOL Full Set. For seven days, AOL for Broadband members can see the entire five-song performance, and narrowband and web users can see just the performance of New Killer Star to promote the availability of the FULL SET on AOL for Broadband. After the seven days the songs are offered one at a time across AOL Music for six months.

It's a great little set, which will apparently be promoted on the AOL Welcome Screen and AOL Music Main, plus Netscape, AIM, CompuServe, etc. If you're not an AOL Broadband member, and you can't make tonight's show in Helsinki... well, erm... things can only get better!

A Reality Tour: Reports, Pix And Press Release

The European cannon is here...

David Bowie's A Reality World Tour kicked off with obvious style and much excitement last night in Copenhagen. The two and a half hour set included a fine balance of new and old songs plucked from as far back as Hunky Dory and included seven songs from Reality. Here is the full set list:

Copenhagen October 7th 2003

01 New Killer Star
02 Afraid
03 Fame
04 Cactus
05 Battle For Britain (The Letter)
06 Fall Dog Bombs The Moon
07 Breaking Glass
08 Reality
09 Changes
10 The Man Who Sold The World
11 Hallo Spaceboy
12 Under Pressure
13 Sunday
14 Bring Me The Disco King
15 She'll Drive The Big Car
16 Ashes To Ashes
17 Never Get Old
18 Pablo Picasso
19 Fantastic Voyage
20 I'm Afraid Of Americans
21 Rebel Rebel
22 "Heroes"
23 Heathen (The Rays)

(Encore)
24 Slip Away
25 Hang On To Yourself
26 Let's Dance
27 Ziggy Stardust

I talked with many fans after the show who were completely blown away by the big visual production of the A Reality World Tour stage set, which I'd rather not reveal too much of so early in the tour, so that those yet to witness it still have a few surprises to look forward to.

David was on brilliant form even pausing to wish BowieNetter Andre1 and his wife a happy 25th wedding anniversary, and the evening was punctuated by playful in-between-song banter that bordered on the surreal at times.

The one technical glitch of the evening did nothing to spoil the fun, when the out-front speaker power was lost during the brilliant karaoke presentation of Slip Away. The band seemingly played on oblivious to the lack of volume in the auditorium as the onstage power was still working.

However, what could have been a disaster had it happened during another song, turned to triumph as the words to the song danced on the screen behind David and the crowd sang their hearts out... It must have even seemed planned to some... and who knows, perhaps it was. Either way, I can't wait to hear a recording of this show.

The band are truly magnificent right now and they just seem to get better and better... if that seems at all possible. Anyway, I'm pasting the press release below which was sent out to the world's media today and I've illustrated it with a few of my snaps from last night.

The press release, which includes details of a BowieNet online Virtual Reality Tour (more of which soon) and the announcement of the next single from Reality, Never Get Old, is followed by the set list for tonight's Stockholm show... if you ever reach the end of this piece! Who's having more fun than us right now? That's what I want to know!

DAVID BOWIE OPENS FIRST WORLD TOUR IN A DECADE WITH A DANISH DELIGHT FOR FANS

ALSO OFFERS OPPORTUNITY TO FOLLOW TOUR AROUND THE WORLD WITH A ?VIRTUAL REALITY TICKET?

LONDON, October 8th 2003

David Bowie opened his ?A Reality World Tour' with a two and a half hour show packed with surprises at the Forum in Copenhagen, Denmark last night. He played an incredible 27 songs including material from the pan European no 1 album Reality plus a selection of songs from throughout his career.

The tour, which lasts for seven months, reaches 16 countries and hundreds of thousands of people, will feature an ever-changing set list. Bowie is looking to change the songs he?s performing every night to make the shows more organic and real for the fans. With this in mind, Bowie is taking the groundbreaking step of inviting every ticket holder to join him on a ?Virtual Reality? tour of the entire world. Each person who attends the shows has a code on their tickets and once this has been entered on Bowienet (www.davidbowie.com) it entitles the ticket holder to follow the entire world tour online with exclusive footage and audio from all of the stops along the way from Denmark to Denver and from Tokyo to Glasgow.

Those present last night would have witnessed a dramatic start to the show utilising one of the biggest LED screens ever taken on tour, which kicked into life revealing David and his musicians in animated form. The band then kicked in with a spectacular version of ?New Killer Star?, the lead off track from the hit album Reality. Next up was Afraid, followed by the classic Fame co-written with John Lennon.

David was wearing Victorian Biker, deconstructed look, and sounding on top form. He was totally relaxed with the crowd, even stopping to congratulate one couple on their 25th wedding anniversary! Behind him a black and white split screen added to the drama of the moment, and the screens high above the stage gave it the feel of a boxing match. The crowd were on their feet from early in the show, and it stayed that way right through to the very end.

Bowie and his crack band continued to mix together classics such as Rebel Rebel, Changes - which he introduced as ?that David Essex song? - and a brilliant Under Pressure with Gail Ann Dorsey sharing vocals, to fan favourites such as Fantastic Voyage as well as tracks from Heathen. Live it was the songs from Reality that provided the real highlights of the night. The forthcoming single Never Get Old and the epic Bring Me The Disco King featuring some incredible keyboard work from Mike Garson were received ecstatically by the sell-out crowd as modern classics.

A storming version of the album?s title track saw the enormous LED screens coming into their own once more showing an extraordinary psychedelic graphic and "CCTV" footage of the band provided by tiny "lipstick" cameras hidden around the stage.

Other highlights included an awesomely powerful I?m Afraid Of Americans with great animation imagery playing behind the band and a fantastic finale including "Heroes" which received a thunderous ovation, a rocking Hang On To Yourself, Let?s Dance and a show stopping Ziggy Stardust. Bowie was clearly moved by the response and told the audience how in these difficult times it felt very important to him that he and his band were able to be there singing for them .

The tour continues through Europe throughout October and reaches Bowie?s homeland of the UK in mid November. From there he proceeds to the USA in December and will include prestigious shows at New York?s Madison Square Garden and the Legendary Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tonight's Stockholm show did include the nightly set changes as promised in the press release... and this is how it went:

Stockholm October 8th 2003

01 New Killer Star
02 Fame
03 Cactus
04 Battle For Britain (The Letter)
05 Breaking Glass
06 Loving The Alien (acoustic)
07 Days
08 Hallo Spaceboy
09 Under Pressure
10 Sunday
11 Bring Me The Disco King
12 Ashes To Ashes
13 Never Get Old
14 Pablo Picasso
15 Fantastic Voyage
16 I'm Afraid Of Americans
17 Heathen (The Rays)
18 Rebel Rebel
19 "Heroes"

(Encore)
20 Slip Away
21 Hang On To Yourself
22 Let's Dance
23 Ziggy Stardust

So that means that Afraid, Fall Dog Bombs The Moon, Reality, Changes, The Man Who Sold The World and She'll Drive The Big Car were dropped for tonight's show, while Loving The Alien and Days were new additions to this evening's set.

David made mention of Copenhagen resident Link Wray during tonight's show, whose Rumble is occasionally played by David and the band during rehearsals. He also mentioned what a big fan Pete Townshend is of the king of instrumental cool. In fact Pete has said of Link Wray: "He is the King; if it hadn't been for Rumble, I would have never picked up a guitar."

I did speak with David about Mr Wray yesterday and he explained that the man is having a tough time of things in Copenhagen... Perhaps his agent should have a listen to Killer In The Home by Adam and The Ants and see if he's owed any royalties!

A more light-hearted moment during tonight's show was during Rebel Rebel when David sang the immortal line: "You've got your mother in a whirl, she's not sure if you're a boy or a squirrel." Personally, I was pleased to learn this as it meant that I hadn't been hearing things during rehearsals in Brussels... well, you know how it is, some people hear what they want to hear.

I look forward to Friday's set list from Helsinki with keen anticipation. Stay tuned to BowieNet for more pictures and stuff from David Bowie's A Reality World Tour.

A 3rd Message For Uk Ticket Holders From Bill Z

Many of you have begun to receive missing tickets. More will be sent every day (for both Europe and the U.K.) Setting up the show at rehearsals was helpful in determining which seats might be obstructed, but because the rehearsal hall was set up quite differently than the U.K. venues, I won't really know until tomorrow in Copenhagen.At some point tomorrow we will know exactly which seats are good, bad or just O.K. Please hang on for a couple of more days. We'll have news for you shortly.Thanks again for your patience.Bill Z

European Leg Of Reality Tour Kicks Off Tonight

Welcome to Reality...

The European leg of David Bowie's much-anticipated Reality World Tour kicks off tonight at The Forum in Copenhagen, Denmark. The press here in the UK are already getting excited, with the above piece appearing in this morning's Daily Star.

I had the very good fortune to be at the top secret final dress rehearsal in Brussels on Saturday, and without giving anything away whatsoever, you lot are in for a complete feast of incredible sound and vision.

I've posted a few pictures below from Saturday's rehearsal, but obviously they don't even begin to hint at the surprises in store for you.

There are tons more where these come from and I'll be posting a whole bunch of them over the next few days, after the show has been unveiled to the public. We will hopefully have a Reality tour section soon where we will collect together footage, pictures and reviews from the Reality shows around the globe.

But in the meantime, I'll see some of you in Copenhagen this evening for what I know is going to be a very special evening indeed. I'm sure you'll all want to join me in wishing good luck for tonight to David, the band and crew. Onward to Denmark!

Xfm Hijack And Richard Allinson Transcripts

I am a DJ, I am what I play...

Those of you that missed David Bowie's take-over of the airwaves on Xfm on Friday evening may be interested to know what tracks he chose to fill his allotted hour with.

The songs in the list below with no artist name next to them are obviously David's own recordings and the titles in brackets are the original albums that each song originally appeared on. Ziggy Stardust served as an introduction to the show and David's own choices in order of broadcast were:

New Killer Star (Reality)
She'll Drive The Big Car (Reality)
Never Get Old (Reality)
Looking For Water (Reality)
She Ain't Right For You - Macy Gray (The Trouble with Being Myself)
Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin) - Scritti Politti (Cupid and Psyche '85)
2 + 2 = 5 - Radiohead (Hail To The Thief)
Out Of Time - Blur (Think Tank)
Fairytale Of New York - The Pogues And Kirsty MacColl (If I Should Fall From Grace With God)
Modern Love (Let's Dance)
Fantastic Voyage (Lodger)
I'm Afraid Of Americans (Earthling)

David introduced most of the tracks with a few words about each and there were some fascinating insights, including this about She'll Drive The Big Car:

Staying with, I guess, an American theme because.. well, much of the album is American. I wrote the album in New York and my wife and I and our child are residents and citizens of that particular city so it's very hard to not be totally influenced by it, it's so dominating a place, there's such a buzz there. It doesn't stop for 24 hours a day and it just goes on. New York goes on and on. For some people it doesn't go on and on and the woman who is the progenitor of this next song, 'She'll Drive The Big Car', is a woman who feels her time has come to an end and she shall not go on and on. And she drives down by the river every day and it does occur to her, one day, that she and the rest of her family will pay a more intimate trip to the river and I think we are left with the idea at the end of the song that she probably turns the car off the road into the river. It's a sad little American story. It seems most great American tragedies have something to do with an automobile, so that's why this particular one takes place in a car. It's called 'She'll Drive The Big Car'.

Susan 'Busy Fingers' * Smith has kindly typed up the whole transcript, which you can read here.

Susans has also typed up another recent radio interview that makes for great reading. It's one that David did with Richard Allinson last month (09.13.2003 REMINDER: LISTEN TO DB ON RADIO 2 TODAY) which you can also read by going here. Thanx very much for both of these Smudger, must have taken you an age.

We also hope to have the transcript for you soon of David's appearance yesterday on Gary Crowley's show. (09.05.2003 NEWS: HELP GARY CROWLEY QUIZ DAVID BOWIE NOW)

* I should point out to those of you with your minds in the gutter, that this nick name refers to nothing other than Susans' typing skills!

All Is Hunky Dory For Rachel

I see your face in mine...

In a follow-up to our Rachel Stevens story we posted on Monday (09.29.03 NEWS: RACHEL STEVENS HAS A POP AT DAVID BOWIE) it seems that the lovely lass is taking the links to David Bowie's classic Hunky Dory album a little further. In the week that her debut solo album, Funky Dory, looks set to enter the Top Ten of the official UK album chart Rachel has released a picture of herself in a familiar pose... keep watching the image above for a glimpse.

As reported in this morning's Daily Mirror here in the UK, Rachel had this to say about her decision to mimic the Hunky Dory cover:

I absolutely love this shot - it's really different. I've become a bit of a Bowie fan recently - really from the influence on the album title and on one of the tracks. I thought it would be fun to recreate the original album cover and to do something which was different to a normal shoot.

Apparently a spokesman for Bowie (And no, it wasn't me before you all start!) said: "It's an interesting way to get classics over to so-called pop kids. Just imagine an S Club fan hearing Rachel's album and then going out and picking up Hunky Dory to hear the original Andy Warhol, it's mind-boggling."

Lol... Mind-boggling indeed. Anyway, good luck to you Rachel, and may we all commend you on your very good taste.

A 2nd Message For Uk Ticket Holders From Bill Z

Thank you all for being brief and to the point in your emails to Domingo. As they come in, they are being sorted into 3 categories. Missing tickets, wrong tickets and bad tickets.Missing tickets and wrong tickets will be dealt with immediately. Bad tickets, as you know, will be dealt with in about a week once the final sightlines are determined.All of you who sent an email will be notified by return email in the next 2 days. It will pretty much look like a formal confirmation (so don't be offended) with a number you should use in future emails. Sorry, but we just can't sort by names or email addresses.Two more people have been assigned to the project; Richard and Rachael. If you get a confirmation, please don't send the same inquiry again. We have a lot to fix and anything that slows the process down will, well, slow down the process.I would say, please hand in there, you won't be disappointed, but I think you've heard that before. Seriously, we are making progress and I believe we can resolve all of the problems. I'm only sorry that there are problems to resolve.Thanks again for all the good wishes and most of all, thanks for all of your patience.

Nks Dvd Single Out Today... Win A Copy Here

Just a small thin chance...

Almost a month ago we ran a competition to win the New Killer Star one-track promo CD single, (09/02/03 NEWS: CD FORMATS, KINKS COVER, HMV DOWNLOAD AND NKS COMP) and, indeed, it was over a month ago that we exclusively announced the tracklisting for today's release in the UK of David Bowie's NKS DVD single. (08/23/03 NEWS: DB COVERS SSS ON NKS DVD)

This very first DVD only single release is a great little package, which includes the beautifully strange NKS video, an enchanting little film that has the feel of a lenticular or 3D postcard... you know the ones that you have to move from side to side to see the image change.

Anyway, the release is on the shelves of your local CD/DVD emporium, but if it's not, you may want to try and win a copy here on BowieNet right now. We have copies of the UK DVD single to give away to ten randomly selected BowieNetters who manage to solve the following dilemma.

The only audio track on the NKS DVD, is an absurd cover of Sigue Sigue Sputnik's 1986 #3 hit, Love Missile F1-11. Tony James was the leader of SSS, but when and where did he first catch Ziggy live in action? The answer is somewhere here on BowieNet... possibly nearer than you think.

Send your answer to me at TotalBlamBlam@davidbowie.com with a subject line of: Tony James first saw Ziggy live at... Usual rules apply, BowieNet user name must be supplied, etc.

This contest will end at midnight GMT on Monday, and I'll announce the ten winners on Wednesday.

Three More Bowie Sacds Released Today

I heard the news today, oh boy...

Among the other new releases today, (see above and below) you may have overlooked the SACD releases of three classic Bowie albums that we first told you about back in July (07/11/03 NEWS: ZIGGY, SCARY AND DANCE SACDs DUE IN SEPTEMBER) ...and now here we are in September!

You can read all the technical stuff about the releases if you go back and check out that story from July. But I can tell you these three sound superb. You haven't heard Ziggy Stardust until you've heard it in 5:1 surround... well, you have actually, but you know what I mean.

It's hard to beat the sound of Mick Ronson slicing through the air from one speaker to another, while Ziggy sings a few feet in front of you and a couple of Spiders thump away behind you... truly magical stuff.

We will be running yet another contest to win copies of the Ziggy Stardust SACD next week sometime. You will let me know if you're getting fed up with all of these competitions, won't you?
