Another Bowiefan

Bowie influences ANOTHER?

Well, we all know that David has been an inspiration to MANY people but would you have guessed that the Tool (the band) frontman, Maynard Keenan is also a BIG Bowie fan? He was quoted on Billboard saying "One of my biggest heroes in music has been David Bowie." He goes on to say that his new band, A Perfect Circle, is a way of "exploring new mediums" in a similiar way that David did. Score another for the goat!

Maclean's Mag

DB appears on this month's cover for Maclean's Magazine (Canadian). Here is a clip from the cover story about music and the internet, and the ways in which artists are taking advantage of the medium:

"Stars -- among them Canada's Sarah McLachlan and Alanis Morissette as well as Britain's David Bowie and America's Tom Petty -- are using the Web to communicate with fans in novel ways."

Radio 2

REMINDER! TONIGHT!
RADIO 2 (FM 88 - 90.2 MHz)
7.00 - 8.00pm GMT

PART 2 : GOLDEN YEARS - THE DAVID BOWIE STORY. (from Aladdin Sane, to The Thin White Duke, and on to Berlin)

The programme is also web-cast here (this is the live stream, so check in during showtime, 7pm to 8pm GMT, Saturday night).

Last week's section on David's early career was fascinating, with previously unheard contributions from major collaborators, friends and celebrities, as well as bang up to date exclusive comments from the man himself.

"He has talent to burn really, and charisma to burn as well. I hate to gush, but he really did have it, like nobody else did at the time." - Roger Taylor (Queen)

"Bowie tapped into the sexual undercurrent of the times. Nobody else had really done that." - Boy George

"I, quite honestly, will not hear a bad word said about the man. I learnt so much from him. If you could say that I had a manual that has helped me tremendously through my 30 years in the business, David probably would have written three quarters of it." - Rick Wakeman

There were lots more GREAT quotes and brand new anecdotes and explanations about David?s early career. Click here for more on last weeks programme and a brief outline of today's presentation.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!

Any of those among you likely to celebrate St. Patrick's Day will probably be far too drunk to read this by the time it goes up. But, nevertheless, if you want a little bit of Bowie with your black stuff, then I suggest you look no further than recent releases by Irish musical geniuses The Divine Comedy and Irish singer Joe Dolan.

The former have released a limited edition of their 'best of' this week, 'a secret history'. As if a greatest hits type compilation by The Divine Comedy wasn't good enough, record company SETANTA have issued a limited 2 CD set encased within a stylish hardback biography of Neil Hannon and The Divine Comedy. Aside from the 17-track 'a secret history' the package also contains a second CD, the 18-track 'Rarities' compilation that boasts a charming live performance of 'Life On Mars?'.

The Joe Dolan CD was sent to me by Irish BowieNet member, Chris 'off with his head' Gaffney. Or should that be Chris 'out of his head' Gaffney, as that is definitely what he will be right now! ...Joe, who has been a name in Ireland since the sixties, is by all accounts, Ireland's answer to Tom Jones. And in a similar vein to Tom's 'Reload' CD, Joe has released his own album of his favourite contemporary songs with a modern twist on EMI, called '21st Century Joe'.

This 10-track beauty covers songs from artists as diverse as The Eurythmics, T-Rex, Talking Heads, REM, Oasis, U2, The Clash, Bruce Springsteen, Alannis Morrisette and newcomer David Bowie. The song Joe has selected from the Bowie back-catalogue is 'Starman' and the track is hotly tipped as Joe's next single. Magnificent!

Have one on me Chris!

Clean Your Closet Week

March 18 - 25, 2000

Please join us on March 25th for the Cause for Celebration Gala and Auction in Denver, Colorado.

Artists, invited by Jeff Koons, will donate two drawings each to be professionally auctioned. One complete "portfolio" of drawings by each artist participating will also be auctioned. In addition to Jeff Koons, some of the artists invited to be included are:

James Rosenquist, David Bowie, Cecily Brown and Brian Eno. Primary sponsors along with celebrated guests will conduct the auctioning under the direction of a prestigious auction house such as Christie's.

A great fundraiser for a great cause! By the way, if you are saying to yourself, 'Cecliy Brown, why does that sound familiar?', that means you've probably visited our special Charlie Finch feature 'How to Make it in the Art World' and seen the links to info about Cecily and other 'hot' artists. Make sure to check that out in addition to the Clean Your Closet Week Website.

Clockwork Orange In The Uk - Bowie Speaks!

Hey Man, Oh Droogie don't crash here...

After an absence from British cinema screens of almost 30 years, Stanley Kubrik's Clockwork Orange returns nation-wide today. Withdrawn soon after it's release back in 1971 at the director's request, (apparently after receiving death threats to his family, and not because of alleged 'copycat' violent attacks inspired by the 'ultra-violence in the film) this controversial and terrifying movie is also the subject of a Channel 4 documentary tonight. Go here for more, and some words from David about the film's impact upon him.

Eyewitness

The Christian Science Monitor Online has a story about noted art critic Ned Perl, and his new book, entitled 'Eyewitness'. Perl did some writing for Bowie's art book, 'Modern Painters'.

Here is a small segment of the story:

"... he has the cachet of writing for a sophisticated art audience in the glossy pages of David Bowie's 'Modern Painters' and for an informed general audience in 'The New Republic'. In a free-for-all art scene in which the battle lines are perpetually redrawn, the most a hard-looking critic can hope for is a steady voice and someone to talk to."

Italian Bowiebash

After the great success of last year's event with around 1200 attendees, the LovingTheAlien.com Italian webzine is sponsoring the 4th BowieBash this coming Saturday, March 18, 10 p.m. at the Rock CafÚ, Mussolente. Special guest will be BlueVertigo, a band hugely influenced by Bowie, who will perform live in the first concert of their European tour to promote their latest album, "Zero".

As part of the tribute to Bowie, attendees will be able to view many rare Bowie pictures, photos and records in a special "art zone"; in the virtual reality zone, cameras will be set up to let you surf the net and visit the Bowie related sites. And of course, the music on the dance floor will be primarily Bowie as well as collaborators such as Lou Reed and Iggy Pop.

Mtv Covers Times Story

Bowie Interviews Self
For Times Magazine

MTV News have picked up on the New York Times Magazine story. And here is what they said:

"David Bowie has penned an article for a special section of this Sunday's 'The New York Times Magazine,' in which the Thin White Duke interviews himself at the age of 24.

Bowie, who also appears on the cover of the 'Fashion Of The Times' insert, conducts a dialogue with his younger self (who would be in between recording 1970's 'The Man Who Sold The World' and 1972's landmark 'The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust' LPs) and the two discuss everything from 'A Clockwork Orange' to Cher's TV show."

Movietime

David Bowie starrer of "Mr. Rice's Secret" has closed a number of territories for theatrical distribution. Panorama has grabbed the film for a fall release in the United States, while CCVAS in Scandinavia, British Sky Broadcasting in the United Kingdom, ARS Media in the former Yugoslav territories and Yeni Tual in Turkey have also made deals for the film.

Artisan Entertainment has re-released one of David's "best acting performances." Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is now available on VHS at Reel.com. But note, this version DOES NOT have the english subtitles for the portions of the film in Japanese, so make sure those translation books are at hand as you view! If you're looking for a DVD version, you may have to wait awhile! Artisan has said that even if given the go-ahead it would not be available until next year.

Webbies

Tomorrow, March 14th, the nominees for the Webbie Awards 2000 will be made public, so keep your fingers and toes crossed, and hopefully BowieNet will get its due praise. On another note, the one, the only, David Bowie is a judge at this year's Webbies, so BowieNet will be there in one fashion or another.

The actual awards night is on May 11th, in San Francisco, and we will keep you informed of any BowieNet updates, nominations or awards...
