New Uk Bbc Radio Series Tomorrow

Fantastic Voyage

The listings for this weekend's radio in the UK are bulging with previews for tomorrow's airing of the BBC's Radio 2 three-part series 'GOLDEN YEARS: THE DAVID BOWIE STORY' (March 11th between 7:00 - 8:00pm), for which David gave extensive new interviews. Here is a brief synopsis for Part One of the series, 'CHANGES' :

'This first programme follows Bowie's early career, from 'Space Oddity' to 'Ziggy Stardust' and 'Spiders from Mars'. He talks about the impact he made on the pop scene in the early 70s, his relationship with Tony Visconti, the early recordings at the legendary Haddon Hall, his introduction to Andy Warhol and the New York Underground scene, and how his relationship with his mentally ill brother affected the writing on 'Space Oddity'.'

The series is not the first David has done for the BBC, and if this particular one is anywhere near as good as previous Bowie career retrospectives, then it promises to be splendid stuff indeed. Contributions this week come from (among others), producers Gus Dudgeon and Tony Visconti, musician and all-round funny bloke Rick Wakeman and SuperFan extraordinaire, Boy George. Click on the Radio 2 logo above for more information.

(A friendly word of warning to Steve K; taping from radio broadcasts without a home taping licence in the UK is illegal and remains, along with treason, one of the few crimes punishable by death, allegedly.)

Candy Clark

Candy Clark, an actress who performed in 'The Man Who Fell to Earth' has a website with info about her and the movies she has been in. Shes has been fortunate enough to be involved with two classics, namely 'American Graffiti' (for which she received a 'Best Supporting Actress Nomination' for an Academy Award), and 'The Man Who Fell To Earth' with Bowie. Here is a clip from her website:

"I was the first person cast in 'The Man Who Fell to Earth', for the part of 'Mary Lou'. The character was quite a challenge. I had to play 'Mary Lou' in various stages of her life, from 20 to about 60 years of age. On some days I would be an older 'Mary Lou' in her late fifties and sit for hours while they applied my makeup. Other days I would play the ages in between. Since movies are usually shot out of sequence, it was very challenging because I had to remember what age I was and where we were in the story at all times. I also played David Bowie's wife from the other planet and at one point I even played David Bowie in a scene! Can you find me? I thought David Bowie was perfect for the part of 'Thomas Jerome Newton' and WOW, what a stellar performance he gave!"

Bowie Writes For The Times

Look for DAVID BOWIE on the cover of theSunday, March 19 "Fashions of the Times," a special edition of theSunday New York Times magazine. For the accompanying Q&A, BOWIE, 53,interviews himself at 24. The result: a fascinating dialog between thetwo BOWIE's who illuminate his ground-breaking styles from the '60s upuntil today. Along the way, there are references to everything from'Clockwork Orange' to Sears and Roebuck (on the Cher show, no less) alldelivered in Bowie's slyly irreverent and humorous style. In additionto being photographed for the cover by Frank Ockenfels, BOWIE is seen inall his classic looks with key archival photos which he hand-picked."Fashions of the Times" will be available in the national and localeditions of the Sunday New York Times.

"'I really enjoy David Bowie's site (www.davidbowie.com). He's so innovative.' With Bowie writing a journal and popping into chat rooms. Crow adds, 'It becomes much more personal.'"

Thanks Sheryl!
