David Bowie’s Acting Career Celebrated by Isle of Man Post Office

The new ‘David Bowie: Actor’ collection of eight stamps including Labyrinth, The Man Who Fell to Earth and Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, goes on sale 12 September

David Bowie’s acting career is to be celebrated with a set of eight postage stamps from the Isle of Man Post Office. The ‘David Bowie: Actor’ stamps, which go into circulation from 12 September, honour five Bowie films as well as his Broadway performance in The Elephant Man, the BBC television adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's play Baal and a special stamp titled ‘The Final Portrait’ which shows Bowie in his last photoshoot.

The stamp set and additional products have been designed by multi award-winning designer Jonathan Barnbrook who collaborated closely with Bowie, designing all his album releases since the 2002 album Heathen to his last album named ★ (Blackstar) in 2016. He was also artistic adviser and part designer of the Victoria and Albert Museum exhibition ‘David Bowie Is’. Barnbrook received two Grammy nominations for his David Bowie covers, winning one of them for ★.

The David Bowie acting performances featured in the stamp collection are his roles as Bernie in Everybody Loves Sunshine (filmed on the Isle of Man in early 1998), Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth, Major Jack Celliers in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, the title role in Baal, John Merrick in The Elephant Man, Paul Ambrosius von Przygodski in Just a Gigolo and Thomas Jerome Newton in The Man Who Fell to Earth.

Produced in the 75th anniversary year of the birth of David Bowie, and also marking 40 years since the BBC television adaptation of the play Baal, the stamps and other related products will be part of a wider presentation pack, also designed by Barnbrook.

Jonathan Barnbrook commented, “I started working on the ‘David Bowie: Actor’ stamp collection several years ago, and in that time, an incredible amount of work has been done to get this collection to where it is now, and to be something the fans will be happy with. I worked with Bowie for over thirteen years on his record covers and the team at the Isle of Man Post Office saw the level of detail that I go to, the kind of knowledge I have, and the efforts I would make to ensure these stamps were right.

I didn’t want to create just another series of nice pictures of David Bowie from record covers. The stamps had to have a connection to the Isle of Man, which is where Everybody Loves Sunshine comes in, but they also needed to show something about Bowie’s career that hadn’t been fully explored, which is why we concentrated on his achievements as an actor. There are the films that everyone knows about, but there have been some incredible acting milestones which are less discussed, particularly his performance on stage in The Elephant Man, and Baal, where Bowie managed to bring together both the avant-garde and the mainstream in one character performance.”

Mark Kermode, Chief Film Critic for The Observer added, “Perhaps my favourite Bowie performance was in the 1982 TV production of Baal, not least because everyone I knew at school watched it go out on the BBC, and then spent the next few days talking of nothing but Bertolt Brecht! Bowie had that power to inspire – to take on different roles, explore different characters, and (crucially) to take his audience with him. We were all grateful to be part of his journey; a journey reflected in this fine collection of Manx stamps.”

The Isle of Man Post Office has paid tribute to performers before, and last November it published a seven-stamp Sir Barry Gibb set, which celebrated the musical career and charitable work of the singer/ songwriter/ producer, who is famously from the Isle of Man.

Explaining the decision for the tribute to Bowie, Maxine Cannon of Isle of Man Post Office said: “For five decades David Bowie was at the forefront of contemporary culture, and has influenced successive generations of musicians, artists, designers and writers. The Isle of Man Post Office’s stamp issue celebrates this unique figure and some of his many celebrated personas. We are incredibly proud to present David Bowie as an actor in this set of eight stamps spanning fifty years of his remarkably varied career. The set also celebrates his performance in Everybody Loves Sunshine, filmed on the Isle of Man.”

Additional products available to purchase include the ‘BowieBox’ which contains a full-colour prestige stamp booklet in which Nicholas Pegg, one of the world’s leading authorities on the life and work of David Bowie and author of The Complete David Bowie, places Bowie’s film and stage career in context with commentary on all eight of the commemorative stamp subjects. The box is completed by a set of nine deluxe stampcards. Sets of the special stamps, presentation packs, commemorative sheetlets, first day covers and related products can be pre-ordered from the Isle of Man Post Office now: iompost.com/Bowie

Stamps:

• Final Portrait, 2016 73 pence. An image from David Bowie's last photoshoot, done to promote his new album ★ (Blackstar), shows the star dressed in a black fedora hat and suit and wearing a confident smile.

• Everybody Loves Sunshine, 1999 73 pence. A British independent film written and directed by Andrew Goth and starring Rachel Shelley, David Bowie and Goldie. Set in Manchester, but filmed and produced on the Isle of Man. It was released in the United States as B.U.S.T.E.D.

• Labyrinth, 1986 £1.04. Bowie was first sought out by Jim Henson to feature in Labyrinth in summer 1984, when he was in America as part of his Serious Moonlight tour. Bowie recorded his songs for the film's soundtrack prior to the start of filming in April 1985.

• Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, 1983 £1.04. Seen by many as Bowie’s most memorable turn in a motion picture. A poignant tale of four men at a Japanese prisoner of war camp during World War Two, it addresses cultural differences between opposing combatants as it draws towards a climactic Christmas Eve in the tropics. The film was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes upon release.

• Baal, 1982 £1.38. Bowie took the title role of a BBC television adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s play Baal. The titular protagonist is a drunken poet, iconoclast and womaniser, whose decline is charted over the course of the play.

• The Elephant Man, 1980 £1.38. From July 1980 to January 1981 in New York, David Bowie played the part of the real-life eighteenth-century character Joseph “John” Merrick in Bernard Pomerance's 1977 play The Elephant Man, which was directed by Jack Hofsiss.

• Just a Gigolo, 1978 £1.75. Bowie’s second lead role was directed by British actor David Hemmings and wasn’t a success. Unlike Bowie’s previous film The Man Who Fell to Earth, Just A Gigolo disappeared without a trace and was only made available in the UK for the first time in 2021 on Blu-ray.

• The Man Who Fell to Earth, 1976 £1.75. Based on Walter Tevis's 1963 novel of the same name, the film follows an extra-terrestrial (Thomas Jerome Newton, played by Bowie) who crash lands on Earth seeking a way to ship water to his planet, which is suffering from a severe drought, but finds himself at the mercy of human vices and corruption.

25th August, 2022, Parlophone Records are proud to announce the musical accompaniment to the critically acclaimed forthcoming MOONAGE DAYDREAM, a film by Brett Morgen.

Coming to cinemas in September, MOONAGE DAYDREAM illuminates the life and genius of David Bowie, one of the most prolific and influential artists of our time. Told through sublime, kaleidoscopic, never-before-seen footage, performances and music, Brett Morgen’s (The Kid Stays in the Picture, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, Jane) feature length experiential cinematic odyssey explores David Bowie’s creative, musical and spiritual journey. The film is guided by David Bowie’s own narration and is the first officially sanctioned film on the artist.

The companion album to MOONAGE DAYDREAM features songs spanning Bowie’s career and includes previously unheard material, unique mixes created for the film and this release along with dialogue from Bowie himself.

Highlights include a previously unreleased live medley of 'The Jean Genie / Love Me Do / The Jean Genie’ recorded live at the final Ziggy Stardust concert at Hammersmith Odeon in 1973, featuring Jeff Beck on guitar. Other rarities include an early version of the Hunky Dory favourite ‘Quicksand’ and a previously unreleased live version of ‘Rock ’n’ Roll With Me’ from the legendary 1974 ’Soul Tour’.

★ BLACKSTAR SYMPHONY ★ The Music Of David Bowie

“We were born upside-down...”

Donny McCaslin has been in touch with details of his latest collaboration, which takes place in Charlotte next month: The world premiere of BLACKSTAR SYMPHONY, The Music of David Bowie, featuring guest vocalist John Cameron Mitchell.

Aside from Donny, others involved with the project that Bowie fans will already be familiar with include Gail Ann Dorsey, Jason Lindner, Maria Schneider and Tony Visconti.

A world tour of BLACKSTAR SYMPHONY is planned in 2023–2024.

Keep reading for further details and go here for the complete line-up and ticket links.

WORLD PREMIERE ★ BLACKSTAR SYMPHONY ★ THE MUSIC OF DAVID BOWIE

Artistic Director and Former Bowie Collaborator Donny McCaslin

With Guest Artist JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL

Charlotte International Arts Festival Charlotte, NC September 16 & 17, 2022

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Charlotte, NC – Charlotte’s Blumenthal Performing Arts is thrilled to announce the world premiere of BLACKSTAR SYMPHONY, The Music of David Bowie, with featured guest vocalist John Cameron Mitchell, taking place on Friday, September 16 and Saturday, September 17 on the stage of the Belk Theater as part of the inaugural Charlotte International Arts Festival (CIAF). A collaboration between BLACKSTAR SYMPHONY Artistic Director Donny McCaslin and The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, led by Conductor Tim Davies, the concert is a unique and singular interpretation of the music of Blackstar, Bowie’s final musical masterpiece, which was released two days before his untimely death. The Belk Theater is located at 130 North Tryon Street, Charlotte, North Carolina.

For tickets, please visit charlotteartsfest.com or call 704-372-1000. Ticket prices start at $39.50.

Propelled by a 65-piece orchestra, BLACKSTAR SYMPHONY features musical arrangements by world renowned orchestrators Jules Buckley, Tim Davies, Vince Mendoza, Maria Schneider, Jamshied Sharifi, Tony Visconti, Michael Dudley Jr., and Vellu Halkosalmi. Act I showcases the first ever live performance of the entire Blackstar album with full symphony orchestra. Act II celebrates Bowie’s beloved musical catalogue with touchstone Bowie compositions including “Heroes,” “Life on Mars,” “Suffragette City,” “Space Oddity,” and more that serve as a reminder of the pervasiveness of Bowie’s presence in pop culture.

Donny McCaslin was Bowie’s musical partner and saxophone player on the original Blackstar recording. He conceived the idea to re-imagine Bowie’s work for full symphonic orchestra, performing along with his jazz quartet and two vocalists. “I love this music, and it is close to my heart,” McCaslin declared. “David refused to stay in one musical ‘lane’ during his long career, playing with different musical styles and creating a musical language all his own. That principle is at work in this program.” A world tour of BLACKSTAR SYMPHONY is planned in 2023–2024.

Featured vocalist John Cameron Mitchell said, “I’m thrilled to work with Bowie’s brilliant collaborators to help honor the artist that made me what I am today.”

BLACKSTAR SYMPHONY will appear as part of Blumenthal’s inaugural Charlotte International Arts Festival, running from September 16 through October 2, a 17-day event devoted to bringing to Charlotte exceptional artists and entertainment from around the world, as well as showcasing local international cultures and traditions. “Now is the perfect time to celebrate creativity, cultural traditions, and community,” said Tom Gabbard, Blumenthal President and CEO. “The arts foster greater understanding and respect.”

“The creatives from BLACKSTAR SYMPHONY are delighted to be working with Tom Gabbard and the team at Blumenthal Performing Arts to be part of the inaugural Charlotte International Arts Festival,” said Stephen Hendel, Executive Producer of BLACKSTAR SYMPHONY.

Bowie: Britain’s most influential artist of last 50 years

“…the power to charm...”

David Bowie has been named Britain’s most influential artist of the last 50 years for his ability to transcend music, film and fashion.

Bowie topped the Sky Arts list of 50 influential artists which recognises renowned artists across the categories of visual arts, literary arts, performing arts, music, film and TV.

The judging panel, led by broadcaster and DJ Lauren Laverne, were challenged by TV channel Sky Arts to create the list and crowned Bowie for his ability to transcend a variety of mediums.

Laverne said: “I was honoured to be chosen to take part in this judging day for Sky Arts, as working with such a respected group of judges, I knew their conversations would be fascinating, and they were. The judges took so much time and care with their scoring to ensure the Top 50, Top 20 and Top 10 lists were truly the best of the best in terms of influence, and the final list are artists that are so deserving of their places. David Bowie coming in at number one was the cherry on top of a brilliant judging process, and it was great to be a part of it.”

A unique portrait of Bowie has been made from individually placed guitar plectrums - each featuring a cut-out shape to symbolise all the artistic disciplines Bowie influenced.

Artist Joe Black, who created the two-metre tall piece, said: “This portrait was created to celebrate David Bowie being named the most influential artist of the last 50 years. His visual representation had a huge impact across all of the arts worldwide. The idea was to use thousands of specially designed plectrums, with each design representing one of the five artistic areas of Bowie's creative life and influences - music, film, fashion, literature and art. Bowie was a maverick and a global icon who initiated a new Bowie era in popular culture.”

Philip Edgar-Jones, director of Sky Arts, said: “As our number one artist, we wanted to honour David Bowie in a way that would feel fitting to the scale of his influence. The artwork that has been created by Joe Black honours the ways that Bowie's influence transcends genres, through guitar picks with cut-out designs of music, art, stage and screen.”

Crafted using 8,610 3-D printed plectrums reflecting the art forms he influenced with one design depicting the Aladdin Sane lightning bolt, the artwork took over six weeks to make and will be donated to a school in Bowie’s hometown of Brixton.

Watch a video of Joe Black creating the image here,

Meanwhile, we’ll leave you with the top ten in the list...

01 - David Bowie - songwriter, performer and actor

02 - Sir Steve McQueen CBE - director, producer and writer

03 - Russell T Davies OBE - TV screenwriter and producer

04 - Dame Vivienne Westwood - fashion designer

"Heroes" 45th anniversary vinyl and live 78 digital

“Tomorrow Belongs To Those Who Can Hear It Coming”

The headline says it, the details are in the press release below...

#BowieHeroes45 #BowieHeroes #BowieBerlin #Bowie1977 #Bowie1978

DAVID BOWIE "HEROES"

45th ANNIVERSARY GREY VINYL ALBUM ‘BRICKS & MORTAR’ EXCLUSIVE LIMITED EDITION TO BE RELEASED 14th OCTOBER

DAVID BOWIE “LIVE IN BERLIN (1978)”

DAVID BOWIE IS… U.S. EXHIBITION EXCLUSIVE AVAILABLE DIGITALLY FOR THE FIRST TIME FROM 14th OCTOBER

Originally released on 14th October, 1977, "Heroes" was David Bowie’s twelfth studio album. To celebrate its 45th anniversary, Parlophone is proud to announce a special limited edition 'bricks & mortar' outlet-only grey vinyl pressing of the album.

After releasing the ground-breaking Low in January 1977, Bowie toured and recorded playing keyboards in Iggy Pop’s band. He returned that summer to the Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin to begin work on a new album. Unlike the rest of the so-called 'Berlin Trilogy', "Heroes" was the only Bowie album recorded there in its entirety. Produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti, the central band from the Low album returned, this time joined by King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp.

"Heroes" was a commercial success, peaking at #3 in the U.K. and #35 in the U.S., with NME and Melody Maker both naming it album of the year. The title track is now widely recognised as a classic and as one of Bowie’s most beloved songs, having been used in the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony and critically acclaimed films such as Moulin Rouge and Jojo Rabbit. It has also become one of Bowie’s most covered songs with interpretations by artists such as Prince, Coldplay, Motörhead, Depeche Mode, Lady Gaga, King Crimson and The Wallflowers.

After the album’s release, Bowie embarked on the 78 date 'Isolar II' world tour throughout 1978. 'Live In Berlin (1978)' was originally released as an eight-song orange vinyl mini album exclusively available at the David Bowie Is… exhibition in Brooklyn, New York. It is being made available digitally for the first time on 14th October. The music was recorded on 16th May 1978 at the Deutschlandhalle in West Berlin, and the front cover features a shot taken at the show by fan Antoine Loogman.

STARMAN ON TOP OF THE POPS 50th ANNIVERSARY PRESS RELEASE

WATCH THE UPGRADED LEGENDARY PERFORMANCE HERE NOW

THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS 50th ANNIVERSARY HALF SPEED MASTERED LP & 50th ANNIVERSARY PICTURE DISC LP AVAILABLE NOW

6th July, 1972 — 50 years ago today, David Bowie performed STARMAN on the BBC’s weekly pop show Top Of The Pops and changed the course of music forever.

Recorded a day earlier at the BBC Television Centre in White City, Bowie’s performance of STARMAN on Top Of The Pops is undoubtedly one of the most essential pieces of music television ever broadcast. It has influenced generations of musicians, artists and writers who saw it at the time and countless others who have since seen it over the decades, from bootleg VHS copies to YouTube clips.

The three-minute performance launched Bowie to stardom. Thursday 6th July, 1972, is said to be 'the day that invented the 80’s’ as so many musicians who went on to be household names saw the performance and it changed their lives. Those watching that night included U2’s Bono, The Cure’s Robert Smith, Boy George, Adam Ant, Mick Jones of the Clash, Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet, Morrissey and Johnny Marr of the Smiths, Siouxsie Sioux, Toyah Willcox, John Taylor and Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran, Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode and many more.

BBC 6Music broadcaster Marc Riley "There's no doubt that Bowie's appearance on Top Of The Pops was a pivotal moment in British musical history. Like the Sex Pistols at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester in '76, his performance lit the touchpaper for thousands of kids who up till then had struggled to find a catalyst in their lives.”

Bowie appeared in a brightly-coloured rainbow jumpsuit, which was exhibited in the record-breaking ‘David Bowie Is…’ exhibition, and dyed bright red hair. During the performance, Bowie wrapped his arm around Mick Ronson's shoulder, revealing his white-coloured fingernails and upon singing the line "I had to phone someone, so I picked on you ooh ooh”, he pointed at the camera, singing to the audience directly.

Top Of The Pops was not the first performance of STARMAN on television. The first took place on the Granada Television regional children’s music show Lift Off With Ayshea, presented by Ayshea Brough. It was recorded on June 15th and broadcast on the 21st. Sadly no viewable copy of this performance has been found to exist.

THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS is available as a limited edition 50th anniversary half speed mastered LP and a picture disc, featuring the same master and a replica promotional poster for the album.

The new pressing of THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS was cut on a customised late Neumann VMS80 lathe with fully recapped electronics from 192kHz restored masters of the original Trident Studios master tapes, with no additional processing on transfer. The half speed was cut by John Webber at AIR Studios.

THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS is the breakthrough album that catapulted David Bowie into the international spotlight. Over the past 50 years it has remained a touchstone record, growing in stature with each passing year. It is now ingrained in popular culture, its undeniable influence spanning music, fashion, cinema, social media and beyond.

Also available on streaming services to celebrate the anniversary is STARMAN (TOP OF THE POPS VERSION 2022 MIX).

Bowie’s first UK album chart entry 50 years ago today

“Just turn on with me and you're not alone...”

Saturday 1st July 1972 saw the arrival of David Bowie’s The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars in the UK top 20 album chart at #15, while in the same week Starman was enjoying a second week in the top 50 at #41 on its way to a peak of #10.

Ziggy Stardust was the first Bowie album to chart in the UK, though it had already hit the American BILLBOARD Top 200 (albeit at #196) having been issued there ahead of the UK 16th June release.

Following album releases on Deram, Philips and Mercury, having his first top 20 album must have been of some relief to Bowie and RCA with Ziggy being his fifth long player.

The album peaked at #5 in February 1973, and eventually reached Double Platinum status in the UK.

DAVID BOWIE "STARMAN (TOP OF THE POPS VERSION 2022 MIX)"

PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED STREAMING SINGLE TO CELEBRATE THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS

THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS 50th ANNIVERSARY HALF SPEED MASTERED LP & 50th ANNIVERSARY PICTURE DISC LP RELEASED 17th JUNE, 2022

50 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT ZIGGY STARDUST

16th June, 2022 — Today marks the 50th anniversary of the release of David Bowie’s THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS. To celebrate, Parlophone Records is proud to announce a special streaming single to mark the album’s Golden Jubilee, STARMAN (TOP OF THE POPS VERSION 2022 MIX).

David Bowie’s performance of STARMAN on Top Of The Pops is undoubtedly one of the most essential pieces of music television ever broadcast. It has influenced generations of musicians, artists and writers who saw it at the time and countless others who have since seen it over the decades, from bootleg VHS copies to YouTube clips.

The Top Of The Pops broadcast recording, taken from the BBC’s master, was released on the STARMAN 7" pic disc in 2012 and now changes hands for hundreds of pounds. Back in 1972, the Musicians Union rules stated that to appear on Top Of The Pops, the artist must re-record their track and, in this case, sing live over the top. This new version of STARMAN takes the backing track (recorded at Trident Studios on 29th June) and backing vocals, featuring a one-off Bowie ad-lib “Hey Brown Cow”, recorded for the show and adds the lead vocals from the album version (recorded at Trident Studios on 4th February). This new mix was created by ZIGGY STARDUST co-producer Ken Scott from the multi-tracks earlier this year.

Also on 17th June, 2022, 50 years and one day after the original U.K. release date, THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS will be issued as a limited edition 50th anniversary half speed mastered LP and a picture disc, featuring the same master and a replica promotional poster for the album.

This new pressing of THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS was cut on a customised late Neumann VMS80 lathe with fully recapped electronics from 192kHz restored masters of the original Trident Studios master tapes, with no additional processing on transfer. The half speed was cut by John Webber at AIR Studios.

Today also sees a special Tim Burgess listening party for the album on Twitter at 10.30 pm more details are here . Tim Burgess: "I’m really excited to be hosting a Ziggy Stardust Listening Party on the 50th anniversary of the album’s release. Fans from all around the world can take part and we’ve enlisted a few friends to help us out too.”

THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS is the breakthrough album that catapulted David Bowie into the international spotlight. Over the past 50 years it has remained a touchstone record, growing in stature with each passing year. It is now ingrained in popular culture, its undeniable influence spanning musicians from Arcade Fire to Lady Gaga, to Harry Styles’s androgynous fashion sense to Noel Fielding’s shirts on The Great British Bake-Off to Ziggy make-up challenges on Tik-Tok.

David Bowie laid to rest the Ziggy Stardust persona on 3rd July, 1973 at his infamous last show with the Spiders From Mars at London’s Hammersmith Odeon, but Ziggy’s impact reverberates to this day. Previously unseen footage from this legendary show features in the upcoming MOONAGE DAYDREAM film by Brett Morgen, which will be released in cinemas this September.

ZIGGY AT 50 - 50 THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS

1 The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars has in the past been mooted as both a stage play and a film.

2 The album was co-produced by Ken Scott, who had previously co-produced Hunky Dory, engineered Space Oddity and mixed The Man Who Sold The World.

3 The famous cover photos were taken outside 21 Heddon Street just off Regent St in London in January 1972, where a pop-up shop was created this year to celebrate David's 75th birthday. The location was chosen as the photographer Brian Ward had his studio at29 Heddon St.

4 Only 17 shots were taken in Heddon St itself. All of these were taken in black and white and then colourised by Terry Pastor, who also colourised the photo on the cover of Hunky Dory.

5 The fashion icon Kate Moss has worn four original outfits from the Ziggy Stardust period; the Kansai Yamamoto one legged jumpsuit, the red platform boots and two kimonos for Vogue magazine in 2003 and the Yamamoto ‘woodland creatures’ suit to accept a Brit Award on Bowie’s behalf in 2014.

6 The signature Ziggy red hair colour was applied by Suzi Fussey, who was guitarist Mick Ronson’s girlfriend. The colour was Schwarzkopf Red Hot Red, and the haircut cost Bowie £2. The hair was inspired by a model dressed by Kansai Yamamoto in a 1971 issue of Honey Magazine.

7 Even though they were not yet billed as such, the first Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars show took place on Saturday 29th January, 1972 at the Friars Club, Borough Assembly Hall in Aylesbury Market Square. It is thought they unveiled six songs from the forthcoming album and Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor of Queen attended the show. Tickets cost 60p in advance and 65p on the door.

8 Bowie's famous performance of Starman on Top Of The Pops was recorded on 5th July and was broadcast on 6th July, and, as per Musicians Union rules, David's lead vocals were performed live. The backing track with backing vocals for Top Of The Pops was recorded on the 29th June at Trident Studios with Ken Scott and featured David’s one off ad lib “hey brown cow”.

9 Top Of The Pops was not the first performance of Starman on TV, the first took place on the Granada children’s music show Lift Off With Ayshea presented by Ayshea Brough. It was recorded on June 15th and broadcast on the 21st. Sadly no viewable copy of this performance has been found to exist.

10 Cover versions performed during the Ziggy Stardust tour included The Velvet Underground’s Waiting For The Man and White Light, White Heat along with Jacques Brel’s My Death and Amsterdam, Chuck Berry’s Round ‘n’ Round, Let’s Spend The Night Together by The Rolling Stones, I Can’t Explain by The Who, I Feel Free by Cream and Gotta Get A Job by James Brown.

11 The Spiders From Mars were Mick Ronson on guitar, Mick ‘Woody’ Woodmansey on drums and Trevor Bolder on bass. Over the next year, they would be joined on stage at various stages by Geoff MacCormack (aka Warren Peace) on vocals, Mike Garson, Nicky Graham and Robin Lumley on piano, John ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson on rhythm guitar, Ken Fordham on saxophone and Brian Wilshaw on saxophone and flute.

12 Instead of releasing another single from the album as the follow up to Starman, Bowie opted for the non-album track ‘John, I’m Only Dancing’ in September 1972. He also released one more single in 1972, The Jean Genie, which was taken from the forthcoming Aladdin Sane album.

13 In 2017, the Ziggy Stardust album was chosen for preservation in the US National Recording Registry, being deemed “culturally, historically, or artistically significant” by the Library of Congress.

14 Before the album and post its release, the band played over 170 shows across three continents. Even though the follow-up album Aladdin Sane was released during that time, the tour was always known as the Ziggy Stardust tour.

15 The song Five Years was unveiled to a TV audience on Tuesday 8th February, 1972 when he and the band performed three songs on the influential The OId Grey Whistle Test show on BBC2. The performance had been taped the day prior.

16 The album was released on 16th June, 1972 and charted on 1st July at #15. It was that week's highest entry and was in the UK top fifty album chart for the next two years.

17 Beneath the album credits on the back cover were the words: “TO BE PLAYED AT MAXIMUM VOLUME.” This instruction was omitted from later reissues but restored on the 2015 reissue, which was a faithful replication of the original as was possible.

18 The red platform Kansai Yamamoto boots on the album cover cost Bowie £28 (£420 today) and the white and red vinyl wrestling boots Bowie wears in other photos for the album were made bespoke by Russell & Bromley.

19 According to Ken Scott the album’s co-producer 95% of the vocals on the album were done in one take.

20 The album took less than two weeks to record over three months (November ’71 – February ’72)

21 The most streamed track from the album is Starman, closely followed by Moonage Daydream.

22 The phone box that appears on the back of the album sleeve is no longer there. A blue onr replaced it but a red ‘K Series’ box was reinstated there in 1997.

23 The phone box’s phone number is +44 207 734 8719

24 K.West, as seen on the sleeve was a furrier company and wrote to Bowie’s label to complain about the use of their sign on the sleeve.

25 The original K.West sign is now owned by a fan.

26 Where the K.West sign used to be, there is now a black plaque celebrating the album which was unveiled for the 40th anniversary of the album.

27 Many influences for the album were mentioned by Bowie, including British rocker Vince Taylor, The Velvet Underground, the American cult artist The Legendary Stardust Cowboy and the writers William Burroughs and JG Ballard.

28 In 1990, Bowie said that the name Ziggy came from a tailor's shop that he once passed when on a train.

29 Guest artists on the album include Rick Wakeman and Dana Gillespie.

30 The album was recorded at Trident Studios in St Anne’s Court, Soho, London. The facility is still there but is now used for voiceover work.

31 The huge success of Ziggy Stardust led to David’s previous album Hunky Dory and the single Life On Mars? becoming hits months after they were initially released.

32 Even though all of the songs on the album have become rock classics, only three singles were released; Starman, Rock ’n’ Roll Suicide and Suffragette City, the latter two not appearing until two years and four years after the album was released.

33 The jumpsuit Bowie is wearing on the cover was designed by his friend Freddie Burretti.

34 The guitar David is holding on the cover is a Gibson Les Paul and belonged to his Arnold Corns bandmate Mark Carr Pritchett

35 Starman was the last song to be written for the album. It was recorded on 4th February, 1972, along with Suffragette City and Rock ’n’ Roll Suicide.

36 All of the songs on the album were played live many times during Bowie’s career. However, ‘It Ain’t Easy’ the Ron Davies cover version was only performed once on BBC Radio 1 in Concert broadcast in June 1971.

37 Lady Stardust was initially titled ‘He Was Alright (A Song For Marc)’ in tribute to Bowie’s friend Marc Bolan. It is the most popular Ziggy song in Japan and was released as a limited edition 7” picture disc there in 2017 to commemorate the Tokyo ‘David Bowie Is’ exhibition.

38 The Chuck Berry cover version Round And Round was replaced on the album at the last minute by Starman.

39 With its line ‘Hey man, Droogie don't crash here’ Suffragette City references Clockwork Orange. The film adaptation was released in the UK on 13th January, 1972, just three weeks before the song was recorded.

40 Starman, Ziggy Stardust, Moonage Daydream, Five Years, Rock ’N’ Roll Suicide, Suffragette City and Lady Stardust all got their world debuts during recordings made for Bob Harris and John Peel BBC Sessions in January and May 1972. These were released on Bowie At The Beeb in 2000.

41 Some of the artists that have cited the 6th July, 1972 Top Of The Pops performance of Starman as life-changing have included Robert Smith (The Cure), Bono (U2), Boy George, Mick Jones (The Clash), Johnny Marr (The Smiths), Siouxsie Sioux (Siouxsie & The Banshees), Marc Riley (The Fall), Noel Gallagher, Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode), Adam Ant, Gary Numan, Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet), Elton John and Nick Rhodes (Duran Duran)

42 The opening song on the album, Five Years, was rehearsed by Bowie and his band for Live Aid in 1985 but was dropped so that Canadian TV footage of the drought in Somalia could be broadcast instead.

43 Early versions of two songs from the album, Moonage Daydream and Hang On To Yourself, were recorded by Arnold Corns, David’s vehicle for his friend and designer Freddie Burretti.

44 Suffragette City was originally offered to Mott The Hoople. However, the band declined so Bowie kept it for himself and later wrote All The Young Dudes for them.

45 Songs from the album have appeared in TV shows and movies such as Guardians Of The Galaxy, The Crown, The Walking Dead, The Martian, Life On Mars and many more.

46 The final Ziggy show in July 1973 was immortalised on film as Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars by the documentarian D.A. Pennebaker. A cut-down version was shown on US TV in 1974 but wasn't released theatrically worldwide until 1983.

47 In 2017, a newly discovered extinct species of wasp was named Archaeoteleia astropulvis (astropulvis is Latin for 'star dust’) in honour of the record.

48 Time, NME, Rolling Stone and more have all cited it as one of the greatest albums of all time.

49 Tracks from the album have been covered by artists such as Bauhaus, Duran Duran, Placebo, Arcade Fire, The Polyphonic Spree, Culture Club, Def Leppard, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Seu Jorge, Portugal The Man and more.

50 Bowie killed off the Ziggy Stardust persona on July 3rd 1973, at Hammersmith Odeon, London, with the words, “Of all the shows on this tour, this particular show will remain with us the longest, because not only is it the last show of the tour, but it's the last show that

Adobe celebrates BOWIE 75 and Ziggy 50th

“Heaven loves ya, The Creative Cloud parts for ya...”

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust, Adobe invites people to create their own personas with digitised tools inspired by David Bowie:

As part of Bowie 75, the official campaign celebrating Bowie’s birth, Adobe releases makeup brushes, outfit textures and graphics inspired by the icon in Creative Cloud.

13th June 2022 – Adobe has today announced it is paying tribute to a true creative icon, David Bowie, by launching a new range of Bowie-inspired digital tools across Creative Cloud, encouraging people to freely explore their identities. The tools, created in partnership with Bowie 75, mark both Bowie’s 75th birthday and, later this week, the 50th anniversary of one of his most beloved alter egos – Ziggy Stardust.

The partnership – ‘Adobe x Bowie’ – sees the digitised tools available in Photoshop, Illustrator, Fresco, Substance and Adobe Express. Known for dramatic musical transformations, including his character Ziggy Stardust, Bowie was considered the original ‘chameleon’ of pop, thanks to his ever-changing appearance and sound. While he left behind an impressive musical legacy, which included 28 albums, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, his cultural legacy transcends music and time.

Inspired by his memorable, colourful and vibrant personas, Adobe is using these tools to invite people to explore their own forms of self-expression:

● A range of make-up brushes named after some of his biggest hits, such as ‘Ashes’, ‘Changes’, ‘Major Tom’ and ‘Queen Bish’.

● Adobe’s pattern sampler, that lets creatives sample the fabrics and patterns of Bowie’s most well-known outfits to turn them into something entirely new.

● Brightly coloured backgrounds & 3D Substance props, inspired by David’s posters and album covers.

● A sticker pack, drawing on iconic Bowie graphics such as the famous Aladdin Sane lightning bolt and Ziggy Stardust’s astral sphere.

This is the latest in an ongoing initiative by Adobe to bring to life historic tools from artists that have changed the world and place them in the hands of modern creators. This was first launched with the digital recreation of Edward Munch’s paintbrushes, continued with the Lost Alphabets of Bauhaus Dessau, and was last seen in 2020, with the release of a vast array of brushes inspired by the legendary 1980s New York artist, Keith Haring.

Simon Morris, Senior Director of Marketing at Adobe: “We passionately believe that creativity is for all, and who embodies that ethos as much as David Bowie? A true icon who crucially believed that ‘art is inherent in everyone’. With these digital tools, we want to lift the limits of creativity and empower artistic expression – inspiring anybody with a story to tell and empowering them to create incredible personas, just like he did.”

“David’s creative works were incredibly subjective; always open to the interpretation of the individual,” said a representative of Bowie 75, the official campaign marking the artist’s 75th birthday. “That makes these new tools from Adobe a perfect way to celebrate his legacy, by encouraging other people to actively engage with art, personal expression and to unleash their inner creative personas.”

The digital tools are widely available now, for free – and fans are encouraged to try out the Bowie Photoshop range, create their own personas here, and share their designs via the #AdobexBowie. They include over 150 graphics, colour swatches, vectors, patterns and stickers, created by Tina Touli, Kae Neskovic, Tabea Mahern and Thomas Hedger. They can be used across Creative Cloud apps, including: Photoshop, Photoshop for iPad, Illustrator, Illustrator for iPad, Fresco, Adobe Express and Substance family. In addition, 18 digital brushes created by Kyle T. Webster can be used in Photoshop, Photoshop for iPad and Fresco.
