“Did you see his eyes? Did you see his crazy eyes?”
You will have heard about the sad passing of Scottish guitarist Ricky Gardiner, who died on 13th May aged 73, following a protracted battle with Parkinson’s. Our thoughts are with his wife Virginia and his family and friends.
While not the best-known of Bowie’s contributors, recognition of his superb work with David is worth highlighting to those unfamiliar with it. We have seen mention that the first thing Ricky worked on with Bowie was Iggy Pop’s The Idiot. This isn’t so, Phil Palmer was the lead guitarist on The Idiot.
However, Ricky is credited for his work on Bowie’s Low, Iggy’s Lust For Life and his performances as part of Iggy Pop’s 1977 The Idiot tour band, which also included 3/4 of Tin Machine...you do the math.
Here’s a playlist that features the tracks Mr Gardiner contributed his wonderfully melodic and unique playing to.
This includes 6 of the 7 tracks from side 1 of Low. All 9 tracks on Lust For Life, including two co-writing credits with Iggy: the instantly recognisable riff he penned for The Passenger and his only shared credit with Bowie, Neighborhood Threat.
The album of Iggy’s 1977 shows, TV Eye Live 1977, features four of the tracks Ricky played on during The Idiot tour. These same tracks also included DB’s keyboards and backing vocals.
Finally, in October 1977, Gardiner was selected by Tony Visconti to play guitar for the pre-recorded backing of Bowie’s "Heroes" for Top of the Pops. The recording was made at Visconti’s Good Earth Studios. Ricky attempted to emulate Fripp’s guitar part by using feedback to attain the distinctive sound: “I was asked to reproduce Robert Fripp’s line, but I did not realise at the time that he [Fripp] had used an EBow. I did my best using feedback alone. As we went through the song, my amplifier started dying. As the song finished, so did the amp.”.
Search YouTube for that version of "Heroes" along with footage of The Idiot band performing Funtime and Sister Midnight on The Dinah! Show in 1977.

THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS 50th ANNIVERSARY PICTURE DISC LP
28th April, 2022 — Today marks the 50th anniversary of the release of David Bowie’s STARMAN, the first single from THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS. To celebrate, Parlophone Records is proud to announce release details for two very special vinyl releases to mark the album’s Golden Jubilee.
On 17th June, 2022, 50 years and one day after the original U.K. release date, THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS will be issued as a limited edition 50th anniversary half speed mastered LP and a picture disc, featuring the same master and a replica promotional poster for the album.
This new pressing of THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS was cut on a customised late Neumann VMS80 lathe with fully recapped electronics from 192kHz restored masters of the original Trident Studios master tapes, with no additional processing on transfer. The half speed was cut by John Webber at AIR Studios.
THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS is the breakthrough album that catapulted David Bowie into the international spotlight. Over the past 50 years it has remained a touchstone record, growing in stature with each passing year. It is now ingrained in popular culture, its undeniable influence spanning musicians from Arcade Fire to Lady Gaga, to Harry Styles’s androgynous fashion sense to Noel Fielding’s shirts on The Great British Bake-Off to Ziggy make-up challenges on Tik-Tok.
David Bowie laid to rest the Ziggy Stardust persona in July 1973 at his infamous last show with the Spiders From Mars at London’s Hammersmith Odeon, but Ziggy’s impact reverberates to this day.

“Feels like something’s gonna happen this year...”
Following previous online whispers, details have finally been revealed regarding Brett Morgen’s Moonage Daydream film.
Announced today, the “feature-length experiential cinematic odyssey” is due for release later in the year. Keep reading for the full press release:

Neon has landed the rights to release “Moonage Daydream,” a new feature film, concert documentary and “experiential cinematic odyssey” that follows David Bowie’s life and musical career and is the first sanctioned by Bowie’s estate.
Brett Morgen is directing the film that is near completion and will feature Bowie’s own narration. Neon will release “Moonage Daydream” domestically, while Universal Pictures Content Group will release the film internationally, and HBO Documentary Films has North American rights for streaming and cable in spring 2023.
The film was designed from conception as a unique cinematic experience and will also be released in IMAX in select markets. The film will also be released in partnership with Public Road Productions, BMG, Live Nation Productions, and HBO Documentary Films.
“Moonage Daydream” illuminates the life and genius of David Bowie with a project that shows how Bowie himself worked across several disciplines, not just music and film but also dance, painting, sculpture, video and audio collage, screenwriting, acting, and live theatre. The film reveals the celebrated icon through his own voice and features 48 musical tracks, mixed from their original stems.
Morgen was granted access to Bowie’s archives by his estate in 2017 and presented him with master recordings as well as never-before-seen 35mm and 16mm reels of never-before-seen performances, all of which will appear on screen for the first time. In addition, all music in the film has been remixed from the original stems into Dolby Atmos, 12.0, 5.0, and 7.1/5.1.
“Moonage Daydream” is written, directed, edited, and produced by Morgen. The film’s executive producers are Hartwig Masuch, Kathy Rivkin-Daum and Justus Haerder for BMG; Michael Rapino, Heather Parry, and Ryan Kroft for Live Nation Productions; Bill Zysblat, Tom Cyrana, Aisha Cohen, and Eileen D’Arcy from RZO; Billy Gerber, and Debra Eisenstadt. BMG and Live Nation Productions financed the film.
Bowie’s long-time collaborator, friend and music producer Tony Visconti also worked on the film alongside sound mixer Paul Massey and David Giammarco, sound design team of John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone and VFX Producer Stefan Nadelman, who worked with Morgen on his film “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck.”
The title “Moonage Daydream” references David Bowie’s eponymous song from the influential 1972 album “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars,” which introduced the world to his iconic, gender-bending, and groundbreaking stage persona, Ziggy Stardust.
NEON’s Jeff Deutchman negotiated the North America deal with Kevin Koloff, as well as Karen Gottlieb of Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks, P.C. Submarine and WME handled sales for “Moonage Daydream.”

MADAME TUSSAUDS LONDON UNVEILS NEW BOWIE FIGURE TO LAUNCH NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE
● The world-famous attraction unveils its latest figure, David Bowie, styled as his alter ego the extraterrestrial rockstar, Ziggy Stardust.
● The new figure will join an epic line up of musical icons, both past and present, including Stormzy, Freddie Mercury and Amy Winehouse at the attraction’s new music zone.
● To celebrate the stellar line up, the Baker Street attraction took some of its headliners to the capital’s most iconic music locations.
31st March 2022: Madame Tussauds London today unveiled its much-anticipated David Bowie figure. This latest figure completes the impossible line up at its new Music Festival experience, launching 1st April.
Working in partnership with Bowie’s estate and using information from his 1983 sitting, Madame Tussauds London’s new figure is the second to be created of Bowie and immortalises his infamous alter ego, Ziggy Stardust. Fans of the icon of sound and vision will recognise the Starman’s signature red hairstyle, cosmic jumpsuit and celestial makeup made famous in the 1970s.
Bowie’s new figure marks the launch of the Baker Street attraction’s newly revamped Music Festival zone; the only place where guests can experience a truly impossible line up of musical greats past and present.
The revamped area will offer guests an access all areas pass to the ultimate music festival. Guests will be able to snap a selfie with Rihanna, pose with Beyoncé and Amy Winehouse, jam with Ed Sheeran, hang backstage in the glam tent with Little Mix and then stop by the 60s and 70s tent to witness rock and pop legends Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie headline like in their heyday. This is a line up only Madame Tussauds London could create.
To celebrate the arrival of Bowie’s new figure and the completion of the attraction’s impossible festival line-up, Madame Tussauds London re-visited some of the capital’s most iconic music venues.
● At the Hammersmith Apollo, nearly 50 years after his last performance there as Ziggy Stardust, Bowie’s new figure was joined on stage by fellow South London boy Stormzy’s figure.
● Studio One at Abbey Road Studios, played host to the figures of Ed Sheeran, Amy Winehouse and Freddie Mercury, who have all recorded at the iconic location.
● At Ronnie Scott’s famous Jazz Club, Jimi Hendrix’s figure graced the same stage where his real-life counterpart held his last ever performance in 1970. He’s joined by the figure of one of Britain’s biggest musicians, Dua Lipa.
● Portobello Road’s Honest Jon’s had two special customers as figures of reggae legend Bob Marley and music icon Beyoncé stood amongst the music mecca’s revered vinyl.
Tim Waters, General Manager at Madame Tussauds London said, “David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust transcends generations and music genres, making him the ultimate headliner to launch our new Music Festival zone. We were honoured to work with his estate in what would have been his 75th year and play our small part in keeping his inimitable legacy alive for generations to come.
“We know that guests love to meet their music heroes here at the attraction. With our new Music Festival experience, we’ve captured the magic of live music, with legends you literally could not see perform together anywhere else, in a way that only Madame Tussauds London could. There’s also the added bonus of no muddy fields or main-stage clashes to contend with.”
Madame Tussauds London’s Music Festival experience is open to the public from 1st April 2022. Book tickets at madametussauds.com

“Switch on the TV we may pick him up on channel two”
In the UK fifty years ago this evening, David Bowie himself was among the viewers settled down to watch the television debut of an exciting young artist and his new band, Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, though they weren't yet billed as such.
Having recorded three tracks for the broadcast the previous day, Bowie and band had been readying themselves for what is considered the start of the first Ziggy Stardust tour at the Toby Jug on February 10th.
The show was The Old Grey Whistle Test (TOGWT) and the songs recorded were Queen Bitch, Five Years and Oh! You Pretty Things.
Hunky Dory had been released less than two months earlier and the Ziggy Stardust album opener wouldn't be available to fans for a few months yet.
So, of the songs recorded, Oh! You Pretty Things would probably have been the best advert for the tour, in that it was freshest in the public memory, having spent several weeks on the UK singles chart for Peter Noone the previous May and June, when it peaked at #14.
However, in their wisdom, the BBC didn't broadcast Oh! You Pretty Things for another ten years, probably considering the song a little too mainstream (due to the Noone connection) for the often chin-strokingly serious TOGWT.
All three tracks were eventually released officially on the Best Of Bowie DVD (including an alternate take of Oh! You Pretty Things) and they still look and sounds as fresh and exciting today as they ever did.
Sorry about the poor quality of the screengrab, but if you need a reminder of just how good this debut was, check out Tanaferry’s YouTube post of all three songs here.

“And I'm gone, through the crack in the past”
Here’s the fourth and final instalment of our interview with Reeves Gabrels and may we take this opportunity to thank him for his time and generosity, not to mention all the superb noises he’s made on David Bowie recordings.
Today, Reeves recalls the making of Dead Man Walking with some great insights into the writing of the song, including the source of the riff* and how a Neil Young performance was the trigger for part of the lyric. Watch it here

* SPOILER ALERT: You should watch the Reeves’ interview before reading further...
Mr Gabrels mentions how DB was given the riff for Dead Man Walking by a very generous young guitarist by the name of Jimmy Page. Well, that wasn’t the first song Bowie utilised the riff for. Here he is talking on the subject during his 50th birthday celebration on BBC Radio 1’s ChangesNowBowie (which Reeves was a part of), broadcast 8th January 1997...
“When I was a baby, I did a rock session with one of the bands, one of the millions of bands that I had in the ’60s – it was the Manish Boys, that’s what it was – and the session guitar player doing the solo was this young kid who’d just come out of art school and was already a top session man, Jimmy Page. And he just got a fuzz box and he used that for the solo. He was wildly excited about it and he was quite generous that day and he said, ‘Look, I’ve got this riff but I’m not using it for anything, so why don’t you learn it and see if you can do anything with it?’ So I had his riff, and I’ve used it ever since! [laughs]. It’s never let me down.”
At least one of the other songs that benefitted from the riff gift was The Superman from 1970’s The Man Who Sold The World.

“My, my, the time do fly”
David Bowie’s 1997 album Earthling was released in the UK on February 3rd 1997, with the usual worldwide regional variations.
The album produced a run of superb singles (most of them accompanied by some of Bowie’s best ever videos), in the shape of Little Wonder, Dead Man Walking, Seven Years In Tibet and I'm Afraid of Americans.
Produced by David Bowie, Reeves Gabrels and Mark Plati, Earthling reached #6 on the UK album chart and entered the top ten in several other countries.
The personnel for the recording of this release were Reeves Gabrels, Mark Plati, Gail Ann Dorsey, Mike Garson and Zachary Alford, with some brilliant and possibly overlooked solos from Gabrels and Garson. (Listen to Looking For Satellites and Battle for Britain (The Letter) respectively.)
Earthling is a remarkable album that not only stands the test of the last twenty-five years, but still sounds fresh and vital.

“Elvis is English”
As promised last week, every Thursday (at 9am PST/12pm EST/5pm GMT) we will share a Bowie focused interview over on YouTube from a name you may well know.
Today’s contribution is from Elvis Costello and here’s a tease about a song you may have heard DB waxing lyrical about: “If David had sung it, it would have been magnificent, I know he would have sung it beautifully.”
Mr C also talks about the influence of Bowie’s music on his work with The Attractions, the beauty of Blackstar and the one and only time the two met, as evidenced by our picture. Watch it here.
Tune in same time same channel next week.
