Bowie vinyl singles top 2015 charts

“There’s been many others, so many times”

Strong feeling of déjà vu the day after thanksgiving, with the Daily Mirror’s recent announcement that David Bowie is the most popular vinyl singles artist of the year in the UK.

On the same day last year we reported the fact that Bowie fans in the UK had created the perfect thanksgiving gift for their man, with the news that Nothing has changed - The Very Best of David Bowie was at #1 on the Official UK Vinyl Album Chart.

Bowie’s success on the Official Vinyl Singles Chart will not be news to regular visitors to this page. Just last Friday, we announced that the Golden Years 40th anniversary disc had claimed the #1 spot.

And back when the Official Charts Company (OCC) in the UK announced the first ever Official Vinyl Singles Chart Top 40 (12 April 2015 - 18 April 2015), we ran a piece about Bowie’s success on the chart. (BOWIE DOMINATES NEW OFFICIAL VINYL SINGLES CHART)

As the Mirror confirms, the four singles pictured here (Changes, Fame, Space Oddity and Golden Years), have all reached #1 in 2015.

However, what the article doesn't mention is that just the week before the chart was published publicly (there were hidden versions of the chart in the preceding weeks), Young Americans was also at #1.

Either way, since the chart's public launch on April 12th, these are the best performing artists on the Official Vinyl Singles Chart Top 10.

The day Bowie broke New Zealand

“I never thought I'd need so many people”

David Bowie’s concert at Auckland's enormous Western Springs (a speedway stadium) took place on this day in 1983.

The officially recorded attendance of 74,480 was the largest audience ever for an Australasian concert. The show was also believed to be the biggest single crowd gathering in the history of New Zealand.

The gig was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest crowd gathering per head of population anywhere in the world.

As with all Australasian-related Bowie things, BowieDownUnder.com is the place to read more about this incredible event.

★ street advertising...have you seen any?

“We’re choosing the path between the stars”

Lots of ★ street advertising going on around the globe in the last couple of weeks. First there were posters for the ★ single and now the ★ album is getting some exposure too.

Our montage shows posters for the single in New York and a huge billboard in London at the corner of Hammersmith Road / North End Road (next to Olympia exhibition centre).

Meanwhile, Jonathan Barnbrook talks about the creation of some of that imagery with Emily Gosling over on It’s Nice That.

David Bowie’s appearance on Cher 40 years ago

“Closer than others I was your, I was your man”

On November 23rd 1975, David Bowie appeared in a fifteen minute segment for CBS TV’s Cher show.

The Bowie performances commenced with him sporting slicked back hair (Thin White Duke colouring and style) in blue jacket and shirt with grey slacks, singing his first US #1 single, Fame, which had peaked a couple of months earlier in September.

Fame was followed by a moving rendition of Can You Hear Me, performed as a duet with Cher. Both Fame and Can You Hear Me were live vocals sung over a pre-recorded backing track.

Bowie wore the same outfit for Can You Hear Me as he had for Fame, while Cher wore a black number and a black bob, which may have been a wig. Cher was as famous for her wigs as Bowie was for his actual hairstyle changes.

The fifteen minute performance concluded with a six and a half minute medley duet, which featured snippets of no less than thirteen different songs, and it’s one of the strangest bits of Bowie TV of all time.

The pair wore all white for the duet, aside from Bowie’s tweed jacket and Cher’s red wig, echoing Bowie’s own hair colour.

It seemed the more conservatively Bowie dressed during this period, the more bizarre he looked. Though it has to be said that his apparel remained beautifully stylish without a trace of irony.

The same can be said of the medley itself. On paper it looks a little cheesy, but if you’ve not seen it we think you’ll agree that both singers’ performances are sincere and heartfelt.

It shouldn’t have worked, what with Cher’s house band performing the backing and the choice of snippets performed, but it did.

Here's a list of the songs featured in the medley.

Young Americans Medley

Young Americans

Song Sung Blue

One

Da Doo Ron Ron

Wedding Bell Blues

Maybe

Mabye Baby

Day Tripper

Blue Moon

Only You (And You Alone)

Temptation

Ain’t No Sunshine

Young Blood

Young Americans

You can watch the full thing here on YouTube:

Finally, here’s a great piece by Gavin Edwards on RollingStone.com from last year, wherein Gavin accuses Bowie and Cher of taking the medley to “someplace glorious and insane”. Fair cop.

Nine-page ★ special in UNCUT magazine

“In the centre of it all”

And with phrases like: “Yet another marvellous reinvention for Bowie” and: “Welcome to Bowie’s (latest) YearZero”, you can perhaps get a hint of where the ★ album might take you...or not.

As you can see from our montage, the feature is peppered with lots of wonderful new Jimmy King portraits.

The January edition of UNCUT magazine is on shelves on November 24th.

★ single review in NME

“I’m not a popstar”

There are a couple of ★ single related bits in the latest NME. (November 20th issue)

First up, in the publication itself, the release is listed in the RADAR section among 'The Best New Tracks'.

While over on the NME blog pages, Mark Beaumont makes a convincing argument for “how David Bowie is upending Christmas” with the release of his ★ single, concluding thus...

“Whether a vision of Major Tom reincarnated as an occult deity, a statement on spirituality being twisted for dark human ends or just a screwdriver dropped into the works of the festive music machine, ‘Blackstar’ is a bold and gloriously out-of-step Grace Oddity, an anti-‘25’ just when we needed one. Have yourself an eerie little Christmas…”

Golden Years 40th anniversary disc is #1

“Don't let me hear you say life's taking you nowhere, angel”

The Golden Years 40th anniversary 7" picture disc (released worldwide last Friday the 13th), is at #1 on the official UK chart.

This fulfils a 40-year-old wish from November 1975, when the UK press advert for Golden Years (hot on the heels of recent chart success for Fame and Space Oddity), made the following bold prediction:

October No. 1...Fame...USA

November No. 1...Space Oddity...UK

December No. 1...Golden Years...WORLDWIDE

In the event, Golden Years didn’t make it to #1, instead peaking at #8 in the UK. Now however, with Golden Years finally at #1, all is right with the world.

As if this wasn't enough, Bowie currently has five singles in the Official Vinyl Singles Chart Top 40 in the UK, three of which are in the top 10.

Official Vinyl Singles Chart Top 40

20 November 2015 - 26 November 2015

#01 Golden Years

#05 Space Oddity

#10 Fame

#26 Young Americans

#32 Rebel Rebel

Thanks to all of you who have made this series of anniversary picture discs such a success.

Sue released one year ago today - see TMSO on tour

“We are the best jazz you've ever heard”

The 10" Parlophone pressing of David Bowie’s Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime) was released in the UK a year ago today. (The record was issued eleven days later by Columbia in the US as part of RSD’s Black Friday on November 28th 2014.) Bowie was backed by The Maria Schneider Orchestra (TMSO) on the recording.

Coincidentally TMSO perform a rare show in London this evening as part of their current European Tour.

Here’s a bit from her tour page...

“On this tour we will be playing a variety of music, featuring songs from our latest album “The Thompson Fields” The Maria Schneider Orchestra will be featuring Steve Wilson, Dave Pietro, Rich Perry, Donny McCaslin, Scott Robinson, Greg Gisbert, Augie Haas, Frank Greene, Mike Rodriguez, Keith O’Quinn, Ryan Keberle, Marshall Gilkes, George Flynn, Ron Oswanski, Lage Lund, Frank Kimbrough, Jay Anderson and Johnathan Blake.”

Most of those musicians who will be playing tonight, also played on Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime).

Earlier this year Maria gave an interview for Jazz Times, regarding working with David. Titled: David Bowie and Maria Schneider's Enigmatic Collaboration, the article/interview discusses the creation of the track, from inception to completion. Here’s an excerpt...

The two worked closely together, exchanging and trying out new ideas—but freely rejecting them as well. “He was very good at saying, ‘No, I don’t like that. Yes, I love that.’ And that made it really easy, that he didn’t hem and haw around things he didn’t like,” says Schneider. The music came first; the words followed and reshaped the music around them. The opposite was also true, with Bowie’s final lyrics adapted to what he and Schneider had written. Schneider and Bowie then called in the orchestra’s rhythm section to workshop the tune—along with McCaslin and Keberle, whom Bowie had handpicked to solo. After further refinement they went into the studio in July. It took only a few takes, with the band laying down their parts before Bowie added the vocal; Schneider had imagined that he would sing in between the orchestral figures she had arranged, but his delivery instead crossed bar lines and overlapped organically with the ensemble. “It was kind of mind-blowing,” she says. “He automatically heard the unexpected.”

Classic Rock mag "Heroes" feature

“And the shame, was on the other side”

The new issue of Classic Rock magazine (#217) has a double-page article on the creation and recording of "Heroes", in their regular The Stories Behind The Songs feature.

The piece is peppered with archive Bowie interview segments and here he recalls the day he performed "Heroes" live at the Platz der Republik Festival on June 6th, 1987, in front of the Reichstag in Berlin, right across from the studio where the song was conceived.

“I will never forget that. It was one of the most emotional performances I've ever done. I was in tears. They backed up the stage to the wall itself so that it was acting as a backdrop. We kind of heard that a few of the East Berliners might actually get the chance to hear the thing, but we didn't realise in what numbers they would. And there were thousands on the other side that had come close to the wall. So it was like a double concept, where the wall was the division. And we would hear them cheering and singing along from the other side. God, even now I get choked up. It was breaking my heart. I've never done anything like that in my life. And I guess I never will again.”

Read the full thing in the current issue of Classic Rock.
