Fashion World's Debt To Bowie Acknowledged In The Ft

And so the story goes, They wore the clothes...

There's a great piece in the Financial Times by Mark C. O’Flaherty today that acknowledges the fashion world's huge debt to David Bowie over the past few decades. Here's the introduction to the article...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Fa ... fa ... fa ... fa ... fashion!” As the catwalk shows continue in Milan and Paris, jaded guests wonder just how many times they’ll have to sit through yet another collection soundtracked by David Bowie’s new wave stutter. From Ziggy Stardust to Zoolander, fashion has had a four-decade love affair with Bowie that’s only getting stronger. Indeed, Bowie may be the most referenced musician in fashion history.

Before Madonna, and long before the fancy dress of Lady Gaga, Bowie was busying himself as a performance and visual artist as much as a musical one. When he appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1979 he wore a skirt, six years before Gaultier showed men in skirts in Paris. In 1996, he commissioned stagewear from Alexander McQueen, in the same year that London’s most directional designer reciprocated with a collection inspired by the Bowie/Catherine Deneuve movie The Hunger (1983). Last spring, Balmain’s strong-shouldered metallic blue and gold women’s blazers were Bowie-inspired, as was Bella Freud’s Aladdin Sane lightning-bolt knitwear. This season, it’s Bowie’s wardrobe from the post-glam period of the mid-1970s that is everywhere you turn – particularly in men’s wear. From Lanvin to Dior Homme, Dries van Noten and Roland Mouret, designers have focused What Bowie Knew to redefine the notion of smart casual dress for 2011.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Of course, none of this is a surprise to you or I, but it's still worth checking out the full online piece here.

Speaking of David Bowie's inimitable style...

Bowie's Agassiz Admired In Telegraph Men's Style Mag

I look at my watch, It says 1985...

This item is taken from today's Telegraph Men's Style magazine - And I need say no more as it's all here for your reading pleasure.

Just before I go, there's a celebration of the rock group Queen in the Telegraph newspaper today too. Here's one of ten interesting facts about their lead singer...

"In 1969, Freddie Mercury fitted David Bowie for a pair of boots during his day job working on a boot stall in Kensington Market. Twelve years later, the pair enjoyed a UK Number 1 hit with their collaboration Under Pressure."

Before the questions, here are a few things you need to know before entering...

YOU MUST BE ATTENDING THE COMPLETE DAVID BOWIE LAUNCH AND SIGNING PARTY IN LONDON TOMORROW (SATURDAY, 24 SEPTEMBER) TO ENTER

IF YOU ARE AMONG THE WINNERS YOUR BOOK WILL BE GIVEN TO YOU AT THE PARTY WHERE NICK PEGG WILL SIGN IT FOR YOU

THE CONTEST WILL RUN UNTIL MIDDAY UK TIME TOMORROW (PARTY STARTS AT 3:00PM) AND UP TO FIVE WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED BY E-MAIL AND TELEPHONE IF POSSIBLE.

OK, so on to Tricky Nicky's dastardly questions...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. On the back cover of the new edition of The Complete David Bowie, there’s a photo of David wearing sunglasses and brandishing a skull. (See picture above)

(a) What song is he singing?
(b) What’s the name of the tour?
(c) On which other tour did he use a similar skull-and-shades routine when performing the same song?

2. Among the well-known names making their debut appearances in the new edition of The Complete David Bowie are these three: (a) Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, (b) comedian and TV producer Jimmy Mulville, and (c) children’s author Julia Donaldson, best known for her book The Gruffalo. All three have made their way into the book for the same reason. What is it?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So there you have it...answers to me here ASAP. PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR REAL NAME AND, IF POSSIBLE, A TELEPHONE CONTACT AND E-MAIL ADDRESS THAT YOU CAN ACCESS TOMORROW TO SEE IF YOU'VE WON.

Mick Rock Classic Rock Spread And Full-page Advert

Rock 'N' Rock with me...

The October edition (issue 163) of Classic Rock has a couple of cool erm...Rock things worth a mention. That's as in Mick Rock.

There's a double page spread of Lou Reed, Mick Jagger and a freshly-retired David Bowie at the infamous retirement party in July 1973.

As you know, the picture was taken by Mr Rock and you should just be able to make out what he remembers of the event below...

Elsewhere in the mag there is a full-page advert for the Mick Rock tins we told you about last month (08.06.2011 NEWS: MICK ROCK BOWIE BOOK AND STARMAN RED VINYL 45 IN A TIN!)

As you probably know already from members who have received promo postcards I've sent out with recent prizes, or from the press advertising, etc., you can pre-order the limited edition tins directly from www.mickrockcollectables.com for a recession-beating twenty squids each.

Five pre-orders of each tin will be rewarded with a signed copy if ordered before the day of release, Monday, September 26th.

You'll also have a second chance to win signed copies here on BowieNet on the day of release.

Bowie Tracks On V&a Postmodernism Soundtrack

Guess I'll put all my eggs in a postmodern song...

The upcoming London V&A exhibition, Postmodernism: Style and Subversion in 1970-1990 has two David Bowie tracks on the accompanying CD/DVD set and double vinyl album.

The exhibition runs from 24th September 2011 to 15th January 2012 and the audio sets are available to pre-order now...here's a little bit of blurb...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970-1990 will be the first in-depth survey of art, design and architecture of the 1970s and 1980s, examining one of the most contentious phenomena in recent art and design history: Postmodernism.

Postmodernism challenged the utopian ideal of Modernism favouring bold colours and patterns, historical quotation, wit and a new found freedom in design. The V&A Shop's Postmodernism-inspired range features fashion, jewellery, accessories, design classics, ceramics and a definitive music collection on CD and Vinyl exclusive to the V&A Shop

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Both the vinyl and the CD kick off with a Bowie track. Though surprisingly, for such a visual artist of the era, there is no DB on the DVD.

The two audio formats have completely different tracks on each, with the limited edition vinyl (500 only) featuring the single edit of Ashes To Ashes and the CD featumging the single edit of Fashion.

Click on the advert below to pre-order now and to view the full tracklisting for both formats.

As for the exhibition itself, as fascinating and as rich in visual feasts as it is, the only link to Bowie among the exhibits is the clobber worn for the Saturday Night Live performance of The Man Who Sold The World with Klaus Nomi in 1979. And even then I think it may be just the outfit Klaus himself wore. I'll update you on that when I find out more.

Tmwfte Tour Continues Plus Part 5 Of Poster Contest

A throw back from someone's LP...

Above is an album I think we're all humgry to get our hands on, released under the enigmatically named: The Visitor.

But, more importantly, it's the fifth of several images that you will need to identify from The Man Who Fell To Earth to be in with a chance of winning a 40" x 27", specially-commissioned, Keiko Kimura-designed, limited edition poster that I may have mentioned recently. (07.30.2011 NEWS: TMWFTE LIMITED EDITION POSTER CONTEST PLUS MORE DATES + 08.07.2011 NEWS: THOSE TMWFTE DATES KEEP COMING PLUS PART 2 OF CONTEST + 08.16.2011 NEWS: MORE TMWFTE DATES PLUS PART 3 OF POSTER CONTEST + 09.01.2011 NEWS: MORE TMWFTE DATES PLUS PART 4 OF POSTER CONTEST)

See aforementioned news stories if this makes as much sense to you as TJ Newton's native tongue.

Here's the latest updated screening schedule...

Stay tuned for the sixth part of this competition. As we have so many contests going on right now, I thought it would be good to string this one out a bit longer...and judging from the emails I've been getting, you seem to be enjoying this one too.

Meanwhile, check out this interview from the San Francisco Chronicle for a few recollections from the set of TMWFTE, straight from the lips of the lady featured in part 3 of this contest.

1966 David Bowie Shot Used For Framus Advert

When you see a Framus smile...

The October edition of the US magazine Guitar World features the above full-page advert for Framus guitars.

The theme is "Real Legends Live Forever" and the ad is illustrated with a picture of a 19-year-old David Bowie strumming a 12-string Framus acoustic guitar. The picture was taken in David's then manager Ralph Horton's office in February 1966.

Another Framus guitar player is one Earl Slick who has a dedicated page on the Framus site for his Earl Slick Signature - Red Satin solid.

There's also a downloadable interview with Slick on the site, taken from the June 2011 issue of Total Guitar Magazine.

Finally...another Bowie guitarist and childhood friend of David's, Peter Frampton, was cornered by tmz while waiting to collect his luggage at an airport.

Peter explains how DB was a strong influence on his musical education introducing him to the likes of Buddy Holly and Eddie Cochran. You can view the full thing here.

Win Tmwfte Region 2 Blu-ray ...no Really, It's True

Whisper these things aren't true...

Back on April 1st of this year, we told you about the upcoming Optimum version of TMWFTE on R2 BD (Blu-ray Disc), which was released on April 4th. (04.01.2011 REMINDER: TMWFTE R2 BD OUT MONDAY PLUS MAD PROMO KIT)

We sumggested you "come back tomorrow" for your chance to win one of five copies of the above pictured BD and slipcase.

Of course, as I posted the item (with it being April 1st and the fact that tomorrow never comes) I laughed like a drain and have been doing so since...just like the child I am.

However, in a rare attack of guilt I've decided to come clean and admit that practically everything on that page that day was poppycock and just a bit of plain daft April Foolery.

Not only that, but now we truly have got five of these tasty BDs to dispense among you, courtesy of Optimum...this may also go some way to cheering up a handful of folk who may not be able to make it to a US theatrical screening of the film.

Anyway, In keeping with the April Fool deception, here follows a set of five true or false questions regarding TMWFTE for you to answer...

TRUE OR FALSE?

1 ~ Arthur, TJ Newton's driver in TMWFTE, was played by Bowie's real life driver/bodyguard Tony Mascia.

2 ~ Early on in the making of the film, during long breaks in the shooting, David himself painted an original picture that he called The Fall Of Icarus. The painting so impressed director Nicolas Roeg, that he had it worked into the script and reproduced in the film as a colour plate in an art book produced by Newton's company, World Enterprises.

3 ~ Nicolas Roeg, was also behind the camera for a film of the Glastonbury Fayre festival in 1971...at which David Bowie performed.

4 ~ On TJ Newton's home planet we see his wife and children. The childrens' names in the film are Moon Unit and Dweezil.

5 ~ In one scene Nathan Bryce (played by Rip Torn) visits a record store and walks past a small display for Bowie's Young Americans album.

So, there you have it. Once you have your five answers, mail them to me here.

This contest closes on Saturday, October 1st, at midnight New York time with the winners being announced soon thereafter.

Usual BowieNet rules apply: Only one entry per BowieNet account and please remember you must enter using your BowieNet e-mail or at least supply your BowieNet user name. If you do neither of these things you won't be eligible to enter.

Good Luck, kidz!

Gurney Slade Survives August London Riots

But I'll survive your naked flame...

Despite previous fears, it seems the Gurney Slade DVD wasn't adversely affected by last month's distribution centre arson attack after all. (08.15.2011 NEWS: STRANGE WORLD OF GURNEY SLADE DVD OUT NOW...IN THEORY)

We fist told you about the DVD in July (07.23.2011 NEWS: GURNEY SLADE DUE FOR DVD RELEASE NEXT MONTH) and my copy dropped through the letterbox shortly after the last news piece.

So, order with confidence, I would say.

Found! That Colour Shot Of The Jean Genie On Totp

He's outrageous, he screams and he bawls...

Back in July I posted a news piece regarding my quest for a colour shot of David Bowie's performance of The Jean Genie on TOTPs. (07.04.2011 NEWS: THE QUEST FOR A COLOUR SHOT OF THE JEAN GENIE ON TOTP)

The news item was actually my feeble attempt to be clever, but it failed miserably...it seems many of you didn't wait for the animation to load in that original story. This theory is borne out by the batch of friendly enquiries asking if I had had any success in my search!

I guess I should have just declared: "Look at this beautiful colour still I've unearthed of Ziggy and Ronno performing The Jean Genie on TOTPs".

At least those of you that did get it the first time round can now enjoy the glorious colour picture above, unobscured by the black and white interruptions.

Five Copies Of Official 2012 Wall Calendar To Be Won

I can see it now...

We posted details regarding the official 2012 David Bowie wall calendar back in May. (05.03.2011 NEWS: OFFICIAL 2012 DAVID BOWIE WALL CALENDAR DETAILS)

Well, it's available now at all good calendar emporiumgs and, as you know, the 16-month publication features a random grab of tasty Bowie album covers from across the years.

And so, in keeping with that theme, all you have to do to be in with a chance of winning a copy is identify the dozen bits of Bowie album cover detail below.

To narrow the field a little, we've only selected sections from original UK Bowie studio albums. So no compilations or live LPs, etc., or non-UK variations.

However, the selections could be taken from either the front or back of the sleeve...or even from the middle of gatefold sleeves.

And, just to throw in an extra little bit of mischief, we've also rotated some of the selections so the orientation appears different to what you are used to seeing.

Once you've identified each of the twelve albums please send their titles to me here.

This contest closes on Saturday, September 24th, at midnight New York time with the winners being announced soon thereafter. That gives you plenty of time to research, just in case every inch of every Bowie sleeve isn't already etched in to your brain...it certainly will be after this!

Usual BowieNet rules apply: Only one entry per BowieNet account and please remember you must enter using your BowieNet e-mail or at least supply your BowieNet user name. If you do neither of these things you won't be eligible to enter.

Good Luck and happy hunting, kidz!

If you won a signed 2011 calendar, I'm afraid this contest is closed to you as you already have a complimentary 2012 calendar too. Sometimes it is worth the wait! ;-)

Vinyl Junkie Launches Bowie's Career... It Says Here

I could do with the money...

Leafing through Portuguese magazine Noticias Sabado recently, my attention was grabbed by the above feature on 71-year-old American Paul Mawhinney and his record collection, which he claims to be the largest on the planet...unfortunately for Paul, and as impressive as it is, it's far too big to get anybody interested in actually purchasing it.

I had read Mawhinney's story before and I have no reason to doubt the vastness of his unique record library. However, his account of how he helped launch David Bowie's career in 1973 may have become slightly clouded, having had to survive the journey through the disorientating pea-souper of the past forty plus years of his memory.

Even allowing for the fact that this story is from an American viewpoint, where things were slower to take off for DB than they were in the UK, the description of Bowie's stateside failure, before 'Mawhinney's plan' was implemented, is a little off the mark.

Here's his version of events over on YouTube, which you should watch now for the rest of this piece to make any real sense....

You're back...So, whether Mawhinney's suggestion to RCA to re-issue 700 copies of DB's first Mercury album ever had any influence on the company's executives or not is not known. But if it did, it certainly didn't happen in the 1973 time frame he suggests.

Having already signed to RCA more than a year earlier on September 9th, 1971, here's a bit from Billboard dated October 7, 1972...

The albums followed a month later, enhanced with contemporaneous Ziggy shots, posters and lyric bags.

The releases were also backed up in the US and UK with a pretty impressive press campaign during October/November 1972...some time before Mawhinney claims he made his phone call.

There was also a Space Oddity 4-track promotional only EP (bottom right in the montage below) which was reportedly given away free at shows during Bowie's first US tour in the closing months of 1972. It was also an in-store freebie with the Ziggy Stardust LP in a promotional carrier bag. Copies were made available for contests and magazine give-always in the same period. The sleeve featured the same image as the front of the newly re-issued TMWSTW and the lead off track was Space Oddity.

The album releases were promoted further in the US with the release of the Space Oddity/The Man Who Sold The World picture sleeve 45 in January 1973. The sleeve was a b/w version of the same Mick Rock shot as used on the re-issued Space Oddity album. That's the single sleeve and two different trade adverts for the 45 below.

In the event the US campaign paid off, giving Bowie not only his first US top twenty single when the Space Oddity 45 reached #15 on the Billboard Hot 100, but also his first US top twenty LP when the Space Oddity album climbed to #16.

Those of you that read Portumguese can read the full Paul Mawhinney feature online here.

Ten Copies Of Bowie Umg Up For Grabs

The past it almost shimmers now...

No doubt those of you who spotted the above full-page ad in the current UNCUT (October issue) and a similar half-page ad in this week's NME (September 3rd) have already snaffled up a copy from your local magazine bloke.

For it is this first day of September that the makers of UNCUT have published the David Bowie Ultimate Music Guide in all its 180-page Technicolor glory.

As if that wasn't enough, they've also bumged us ten copies so that those of you in the uncivilised parts of the world might get your hands on a copy too. But first, here's the official blurby stuff with a short description of the contents...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Uncut presents David Bowie: The Ultimate Music Guide – a stellar 180-page exploration of the Man Who Fell To Earth, tracing his orbit from Beckenham to Berlin, from Wild-Eyed Space Oddity to Ziggy Stardust, Thin White Duke and beyond. You’ll discover a series of rare, revealing interviews from the bountiful archives of NME, Melody Maker and Uncut, as well as page after page of stunning photography, new in-depth reviews of every single Bowie album (even Tin Machine!) and much, much more!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And they're not lying...those archives are a treasure trove indeed, with interviews from the two most important UK music weeklies published during the years from which these interviews are taken, between 1967 and 1995.

The re-evaluations of the whole of the Bowie back catalogue are presented here by a host of guest reviewers whose names you will be generally familiar with. The reviews seem generally well-considered (not had a chance to read them all yet though) and so they should be with the benefit of many years of familiarity and the understanding of their place in rock history. Obviously these luxuries weren't afforded to the reviewers who judged them as they were released.

This is all punctuated by a feast of glorious pictures, some of which I know you won't have seen before. Here's just a random selection of four spreads from the ninety or so that fill the magazine.

There will be even more content in the iPad version of David Bowie: The Ultimate Music Guide and we'll let you know exactly what that content is once we have seen the final version.

Anyway, on to the reason that the majority of you are still lingering at the bottom of this item for...your chance to win one of ten copies of David Bowie: The Ultimate Music Guide, kindly donated by UNCUT.

It's one of those 'keep an eye out but don't do anything just yet' contests, like the ongoing TMWFTE poster contest below.

As you know, UNCUT have called this publication David Bowie: The Ultimate Music Guide...or, David Bowie: The UMG as we know it in the biz!

So, over the next week or so I'm going to be slipping the three letters umg in to my news items here on BowieNet in the form of incorrectly spelt words.

An example would be: And red mutant eyes gazed down on Humger City.

The letters umg will always be in that order and obviously all used within one badly-spelled word, with no spaces.

I'll let you know when it's time to start counting them up and how many in total you need to look for.

For those of you that simply can not wait for the results of this contest, you can order David Bowie: The Ultimate Music Guide online here.

Happy Eleventh Birthday To Lexi Jones

And if the homework brings you down...

Happy 11th birthday to you, Alexandria Zahra Jones, wishing you many happy returns of the day from everybody here at DavidBowie.com.

Hope you're have a wonderful day, Lexi, and that you're placing extra special demands on mum and dad.

Here in the UK, you'd be moving up to secondary or high school when you go back next month. Not sure if that's the same for you, but I thought I'd help ease you in to the more serious level of maths that you will be facing.

Above is an animation of the number 11 appropriately enough. All you have to do is count how many times the number 11 appears before you get to the stop sign.

You can restart the animation by refreshing the screen at any point. You can find the answer below, but no peeking!

Did we catch you out? Get used to it...those high school teachers are always getting up to sneaky stuff to try and trip you up. If we didn't catch you out, don't blame me...it was your dad's daft idea...a bit.

Duncan Talks Dad In Mos Live Magazine Feature

I bought you a pair of shoes, A trumpet you can blow, And a book of rules...

You may have already seen this one via a Google alert, as the online version went live last night.

It's a front cover and 4-page interview with Duncan Jones by Martyn Palmer for today's Mail On Sunday Live magazine.

The piece appears on the eve of the Blu-ray/DVD release of Source Code. (06.18.2011 NEWS: SOURCE CODE BDs AND DVDs DUE IN JULY AND AUGUST)

However, the bulk of the interview is taken up with Duncan's recollections of his childhood backstage and on set and with his relationship with his father.

It's a touching piece and his obvious affection for his dad and appreciation of the life lessons he learned at an early age come across very strongly.

You can read the full thing online here. But, you have to admit, you're going to want to get your hands on the hard copy when it features a cover as cool as that above.

New Mckee Bowie Painting And Exhibition At Snap

Three, Two, One, Lift Off...

It is with much pleasure that we can exclusively reveal Pete McKee's latest portrayal of David Bowie, which is entitled: Three Minutes to Lift Off Mr Stardust.

The painting is one of many illustrating pivotal events in the history of recorded music that Pete has made for his upcoming

Great Moments in Popular Music exhibition.

I'm sure you've all realised that the 'great moment' depicted above is of David Bowie and Trevor Bolder (remaining Spiders just out of view) about to create the first tremors of a national youthquake in the UK, with the televisual debut of Starman on Lift Off With Ayshea on June 21st, 1972.

You can read Marc Riley's account of this life-changing moment and view another of Pete's Bowie paintings in this BowieNet story from last year: 09.12.2010 NEWS: MARC RILEY PAINTS BOWIE FOR COVER VERSION EXHIBITION

Of course, the full effect of this eruption would be complete a couple of weeks later on July 6th with another broadcast of Starman reaching a wider audience on Top Of The Pops.

For those that haven't already gleaned the information from the advert above, the exhibition opens at Snap Galleries in London next month.

Get more information at the Snap Galleries site. While you're there, check out a great feature on artist Morgan Howell, with an introduction to his wonderful paintings of iconic 45s, which we have featured on these pages more than once or twice.

Love You Till Sunday Bowie Day In Southend-on-sea

Ten thousand peoploids split into small tribes, Coveting Bowie's back catalogue...

This sounds impressively ambitious, a whole bunch of musical type Bowie fans carving up the Bowie back catalogue to perform the songs live from 2:00pm on Sunday, August 21st, under the shared umbrella of Love You Till Sunday.

In fact, around twenty artists will perform a collective tribute to David Bowie, consisting of approximately forty Bowie tunes, presumably played at breakneck speed to fit 'em all in!

Still, if the attention to detail is anything like it is in the above flyer for the event, then a splendid time should be had by all.

For those of you wondering, the flyer is based on the original Dutch Love You Till Tuesday picture sleeve 45 from 1967, below.

You can read more about the event on the Love You Till Sunday facebook page and find out how to get to the venue here on The Railway Hotel site.
