Those Tmwfte Dates Keep Coming Plus Part 2 Of Contest

Keeps his passport clean...

The image above is the second of several images you will need to identify from The Man Who Fell To Earth to be in with a chance of winning one of the very tasty, 40" x 27", specially-commissioned, Keiko Kimura-designed, limited edition posters that we told you all about last week. (07.30.2011 NEWS: TMWFTE LIMITED EDITION POSTER CONTEST PLUS MORE DATES)

The poster was created in celebration of the North American theatrical release by Rialto Pictures of a new 35mm print of The Man Who Fell To Earth, with the butchered twenty minutes reinstated to make this the viewing experience Americans should have had thirty five years ago.

Due to unprecedented popular demand, more screenings are being added to the schedule all the time, as you can see from the updated list below...

If you've never experienced this masterpiece at a cinema, don't take our word for how good it is...check out these snippets from the abundance of recent reviews.

Stay tuned for the third part of the contest shortly, but remember, you won't need to do anything until we've posted all of the images you need to identify.

Mick Rock Bowie Book And Starman Red Vinyl 45 In A Tin!

There's a Starman in a tin in the sky...

In conjunction with EMI and Loud Distribution, Mick Rock will be issuing the above STARMAN tin in a series of four which also includes, Syd Barrett, Iggy Pop and Glam!

The Bowie tin will house a 128-page, 45-sized, book, jam-packed with Mick's iconic Bowie images from the thirty years between 1972 and 2002, along with a 7" coloured vinyl 45...as pictured below.

The book features a full introduction, new insights and captions by Mick along with quotations from David, while the images inside are reproduced in stunning high quality from files that have been digitally remastered by Mick.

The exclusive 45 is a translucent red vinyl pressing of Starman/Suffragette City in a picture sleeve, as shown below.

The tins are limited to 5,000 copies and they will be available from September 26th. Here follows details of the 45s contained within the other three boxes...

Iggy Pop tin - Success/The Passenger on blue vinyl
Syd Barrett tin - Octopus/Golden Hair on yellow vinyl
Glam! tin - Virginia Plain/The Numberer by Roxy Music on clear vinyl

Stay tuned for purchase details and hopefully for a contest to win a handful of copies of the Bowie tin signed by Mick Rock.

I'll leave you with a quotation from Mick regarding Mr B, taken from the promotional blurb...

“I experienced David Bowie above all as a piece of living artwork, constantly modulating and mutating like a series of startling reflections in a cracked mirror.

He was fascinating; Ziggy Stardust was a new breed of rock n roll operative, a rogue hitman with his own agenda, a postmodern heartthrob with destiny on his mind, a dreamer of Dada with glitter in his soul.”

Celebrate Bowie In London For Free On Saturday

We played Our songs and felt the London sky... It was ragged and naive...

As recommended by Time Out London, Saturday afternoon in London sees the third annual free David Bowie walk in the afternoon and later that same evening Bowie Night at Feeling Gloomy.

Pictured above are Darryl Croft and Andy Warhol about to lead the crowd in to another Bowie tune outside Bowie's childhood home in Stansfield Road, Brixton at last year's event.

You can view some of the sing-a-longs from last year here.

There are also pictures from the same event here.

Here's the official blurb...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

David Bowie Walk Plus Bowie Night At Feeling Gloomy - Saturday 6th August

Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah , nah , nah, nahhhh. For those of you with a less than musical ear that was the start of Ziggy Stardust. And the reason for this breaking out of X-Factor levels of singing? Why it’s only the return of the famous Feeling Gloomy Bowie Odyssey!

Join us first off as we set off on a FREE walking tour, taking in some of the sites of Bowie’s early life and finest hours. The tour will take in the house where the Starman was born, the site of the Marquee Club scene of a few of his finest gigs and lots of other interesting spots.

Not only will you learn some fascinating facts about Davie Jones but there will also be an honest-to-goodness Bowie impersonator there singing out some of his greatest hits!

If your poor tootsies aren’t tired enough after that then you can head down to Feeling Gloomy for Bowie night. Let’s dance to some of his greatest tunes, in amongst the normal Gloom, and put on your red shoes to dance the blues as that Bowie impersonator pops up again to serenade you. (Last time ended with a teary and beery Space Oddity).

There will be a prize for the best dressed Bowie. We will more than likely be showing Labyrinth on the screens and we’ll all have a jolly time going home singing the Laughing Gnome.

Feeling Gloomy - David Bowie Walk and Bowie Night
Walk Starts 4:00pm
Trinity Arms, 45 Trinity Gardens, SW9 8DR
FREE
Bookings: 07835 269 366

Bowie Club Night
02 Academy Islington 2
16 Parkfield St, Islington, N1.
Club: £4.50 Adv (plus bkg fee), £6 before 12, £8 after
Tickets / Info: www.FeelingGloomy.com or 0844 477 600 2000
Press enquiries: 07930 414 626

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spaces for the guided Bowie walk, though free, are very limited and almost all gone.

And I'm certainly not suggesting you just turn up at the meeting point at 4:00pm and just tag along anyway...that would be a bit naughty, bordering on total anarchy.

There are still tickets for the evening's Bowie bash in Islington where there will be a prize for the best dressed Bowie, Bowie tunes played both live and from disc and a screening of Labyrinth somehow.

We'll be following up with pictures from both events as soon as we have them.

New York Yankees Star Records Bowie Song For Charity

He's so Swisher in his cotton and cap...

New York Yankees right fielder***, Nick Swisher, apparently jumped at the chance to record a children's album for charity and among his personal selections for the project is a cover of David Bowie's "Heroes".

Released this week, Believe is a 12-track album covering other favourites of Swisher's and it also features former Yankees center fielder*** Bernie Williams and San Francisco Giants pitcher*** Barry Zito, who both played guitar on the album. 13-year-old granddaughter of Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig was among a group of children who were backup vocalists on each song.

A portion of the proceeds from Believe goes to Swish's Wishes, the switch hitter's foundation for children with health issues.

Bowie, himself a Yankees fan, was further complimented by Swisher who said his favourite songs on Believe were the Bowie cover and the title track.

*** Just because I'm a Limey, doesn't mean I don't know my positions.

Ziggy Played Surf Guitar Cd Winners

***

We set this one last month (07.07.2011 NEWS: FIVE COPIES OF ZIGGY PLAYED SURF GUITAR TO BE WON) and almost everybody got the right answer. Not so surprising when one considers the simplicity of the question we set:

All twenty one tracks on this album are instrumentals, obviously. However, only one of the tracks was an instrumental when originally released by David Bowie. Please identify that track.

The answer of course is Speed Of Life and these are the five members who can look forward to listening to Ziggy Played Surf Guitar - The Surf Instrumental Bands Of The World Perform The Music Of David Bowie down at their local beach once they've sent in their postal addresses.

Anta
geraldcraig
Motherofsephy
ophios
suikkanen

And for those of you that had managed to recover from the trauma and had internalised it, here's THAT picture again...

If you're a winner or if you bought the album anyway, don't forget to complete the listening experience via the two bonus track free downloads over at the Cordelia Records site...

Tmwfte In Los Angeles Plus Contest Update

Philadelphia, PA, LA in California now, Don't forget the motor city...

We told you about this one last month, (06.20.2011 NEWS: THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH BACK ON THE BIG SCREEN) it's the North American theatrical release by Rialto Pictures of a new 35mm print of The Man Who Fell To Earth in recognition of the 35th anniversary of the original US release.

Had a few e-mails from folk who caught the NY screening and all are generally agreed that it's so good to see such a decent quality print on the big screen after all this time...particularly one that hasn't been butchered by the censors, like the original US cut was.

The film has now moved to the Nuart Theatre in LA, but be quick as it moves again on the 15th.

Tickets are still available here for LA and with three screenings a day you should find a time to suit.

If you're the type that's always swanning about the United States, you may want to print out the above cut-out-and-keep schedule in case the film is showing wherever you happen to be at any given moment.

Those generous types at Rialto Pictures have promised us a bunch of the above Keiko Kimura-illustrated posters for a contest due to start any day now.

FOOTNOTE: While we're on the subject of contests, EMI in the UK are giving away nine more promotional S2S T-shirts in a competition that ends at midnight UK time on the 15th. Go here to enter.

While we're on the subject of S2S contests, we will finally be running the second part of our gigantic S2S giveaway before the end of the month.

Suffragette City 45 Is Thirty Five And Immortal

A total blam blam...

Though a handful of territories saw the release of Suffragette City as an A-side in July (9th in the UK) 1976, an equal number had the B-side of the single, Stay, elevated to A-side status the following month with Word On A Wing as the B-side.

Suffragette City was seen as a promotional tool for the recently-released CHANGESONEBOWIE, but despite having a picture sleeve, (which was still considered a big deal at that point in the UK) the 45 flopped.

Out of the twenty or so RCA single releases from Changes in 1972 up to Beauty And The Beast in 1978, (when Bowie picture sleeves became standard issue) only four were picture sleeves and Suffragette City was the fourth. Not that it helped sales any.

Aside from the false start of Changes, (which sold healthily for years as a back catalogue single despite not charting originally) as far as I can tell, Suffragette City has the dubious honour of being the worst performing post-Mercury Bowie single of all time in the UK, (excepting old label re-issues and the like) it didn't even trouble the Top 100.

This was most likely down to the fact that it had already been available on the Ziggy Stardust album and CHANGESONEBOWIE, not to mention as a B-side to Starman. A live version appeared on both David Live and as the B-side of Young Americans. All this in the space of four years.

Benefit of hindsight and all that, but I think Stay may have performed better as an A-side...and it seems a few territories agreed with that theory the following month. Anyway, this overkill didn't spoil fan enjoyment of the song and it remained a live favourite across the years.

Indeed, it's great to see that Suffragette City is still turning people on to David Bowie even now. One of the items that didn't appear in ARTROCKER's COMPLETE ARTICLE GUIDE in our previous news story was a piece by Daniel "Sped" Spedding of the Dutch Uncles, a band who enjoyed iTunes single of the week in the UK a couple of months back with the excellent Cadenza.

The piece is called Dutch Uncles on ‘Suffragette City’ and here it is...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOWIE WEEK: Dutch Uncles on ‘Suffragette City’

Sped from Dutch Uncles reveals how car trips with his parents - and 'Suffragette City' - turned him into the man he is today...

Suffragette City by David Bowie takes me back to being five years old, in the back of a white Ford Capri, rocking vigorously from side to side, on a booster seat with a 90’s centre parting and a big mouth (only the hair has changed).

Parents up front. Dad driving with the window down whilst smoking and doing his best Bowie impression. My Mum shouting “Sing in your own voice, you’re not David Bowie and you’re never going to sound like him…”. The track would change to Neil Diamond or something, and again my Mum pipes up with “Sing in your own…!”

So yeah, I’ve been a fan of Bowie since I can remember and this is one of my favourites. As an artist he’s always been in my head as brilliant and iconic - nothing has changed over the years in terms of my opinion of him and I don’t believe it ever will.

It was key in shaping my musical taste which I can trace back to me wanting to pursue the guitar through to eventually meeting my band mates. Wanting to play guitar came from being inspired by great music pushed onto me by my family from a very early age... it’s what I am doing today, and seems what I have always wanted to do.

All that’s left to say is…Wham bam thank you Ma’am… & Dad!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indeed, that immortal line is all that is left to say, courtesy of the current online Durex campaign in Switzerland! Thanx to French BowieNetter Eric for the pointer...so to speak.

Not sure what the TV in ARTROCKER TV stands for, unless it's Tony Visconti. Speaking of whom, he is interviewed about Mick Ronson for this and he has a theory regarding DB and Ronno's first meeting.

According to TV, not only did they meet several months ahead of the previously accepted dates (believed to be days before John Peel's Sunday Show BBC session of February 1970), but apparently Mick Ronson actually played on the David Bowie Philips album (Space Oddity) too.

If Tony has this right, it's a revelation he didn't mention in his book, though he did say they met during the recording of the Philips album.

So, despite David's claim to Peel on the Sunday Show that: "Michael's just come down from Hull. I met him for the first time about two days ago", according to Tony they actually met at least three months earlier.

Aside from the TV interview, there are lots of other goodies to read and you should continue to keep an eye on the page for a contest in the coming days.

Five Copies Of Ziggy Played Surf Guitar To Be Won

Well hung and snow white tan... (See below, if you'll excuse the pun)

You're probably already aware of this one since it was released at the tail-end of last month (June 27th), but now we've received contest copies and I've had a good listen, I think it's safe to mention here.

Ziggy Played Surf Guitar - The Surf Instrumental Bands Of The World Perform The Music Of David Bowie is one of those albums that has to be believed to be heard, or something similar...and we're giving you the chance to do just that.

If surf instrumental isn't a genre you're particularly familiar with, (and why wouldn't it be) imagine the sound of the late fifties/early sixties guitar instrumentalists such as Link Wray, Duane Eddy, Dick Dale and The Shadows, with a bit of seventies menace thrown in by The Cramps here and there,

I've had a few good listens since last week and I have to say I think these versions are genuinely affectionate renditions of the Bowie originals...anyway, five of you can make up your own mind about that by answering the following question correctly...

All twenty one tracks on this album are instrumentals, obviously, (be a daft title otherwise). However, only one of the tracks was an instrumental when originally released by David Bowie. Please identify that track.

Here follows the tracklisting for you to do your research, that's if you can keep your eyes off the picture for a moment...sorry David, couldn't resist...

Ziggy Played Surf Guitar - The Surf Instrumental Bands Of The World Perform The Music Of David Bowie

01 ~ The Gospel According To Tony Day - The Green Windows
02 ~ Five Years - Surfadelica
03 ~ Starman - The Vara-tones
04 ~ Moonage Daydream - The TomorrowMen
05 ~ Ziggy Stardust - The Thurston Lava Tube
06 ~ Surfer Jet City - The Pterodactyls
07 ~ Did You Ever Have A Dream - The Muffinmates
08 ~ All The Young Dudes - The Razorblades
09 ~ Life On Mars? - The Weasletones
10 ~ "Heroes" - The Incredible Mr. Smith
11 ~ Speed Of Life - The Insect Surfers
12 ~ All The Young Dudes - The Glasgow Tiki Shakers
13 ~ Rebel Rebel - The Red Planets
14 ~ Modern Love - The Swamp Coolers 1
5 ~ China Girl - The Mighty Surf Lords
16 ~ Let's Dance - The Bowbridge Band
17 ~ Cat People (Putting Out Fire) - The Breakaways
18 ~ The Man Who Sold The World - The Lost Boys of Penzance
19 ~ The Jean Genie - Monkey Versus Robot
20 ~ Panic In Detroit - Pollo Del Mar 21 ~ Lady Grinning Soul - Los Fantasticos

Free Downloads
22 ~ Starman - The Pterodactyls
23 ~ Ashes to Ashes - The Weasletones

You can get a flavour of the thing via the two free downloads over at the Cordelia Records site...

Meanwhile, if you think you know the answer to the above question, send it to me here. (Link is only active when logged in to BowieNet)

This contest closes on Saturday, July 30th, at midnight New York time with the winners being announced at the start of August.

Usual BowieNet rules apply: Only one entry per BowieNet account and please remember you must enter using your BowieNet e-mail or at least supply your BowieNet user name. If you do neither of these things you won't be eligible to enter.

Good Luck and happy Bowie instrumental spotting!

The Quest For A Colour Shot Of The Jean Genie On Totp

Loves to be loved...

For far too long now, (thirty eight and a half years) thanks to the BBC's insane tape-wiping policy, we've tolerated the above, rather poor quality mono shot of Ziggy and Ronno as the only evidence of their performance of The Jean Genie on the UK's most successful weekly TV pop show.

I wouldn't dare expect to ever see the actual footage of this legendary Top Of The Pops performance by David, The Spiders and Mike Garson. But, there has to at least be a colour photographic still that has survived the journey since the taping on January 3rd, 1973.

I'm sure if we all make a concerted effort we can find one and I don't mean some nasty, hand-coloured version of the above black and white shot. Please let us know if you strike lucky.

Garson's Bowie Variations Cd And Sheet Music Book Due

They tell me "Garson, we want you, be elusive, but don't walk far"...

Mike Garson has been sending me details of his latest venture over the last couple of months.

It's an eleven-track CD entitled The Bowie Variations For Piano, which gives some clue as to its content.

I asked Mike if this particular project was one he had been considering for long, as he had played his own interpretations of Bowie's music both at the final Hammersmith show in 1973 and with the Mike Garson Band in 1974 as warm-ups in both cases for David's main performanceHere's what he said..."This is a very important album for me as I've been contemplating doing David's songs for almost 40 years and to do it solo piano seemed by far the most honest way for me."

And here's a quotation DB donated for the album: "Whatever Mike lends his hands to invariably becomes something magical."

Here's the tracklisting...

01 ~ Space Oddity
02 ~ John, I'm Only Dancing
03 ~ Life On Mars?
04 ~ "Heroes"
05 ~ Ashes To Ashes
06 ~ Variations On "Changes"
07 ~ Let's Dance
08 ~ Medley: Battle For Britain (The Letter) / The Loneliest
Guy / Bring Me The Disco King
09 ~ Tribute To DB
10 ~ Wild Is The Wind

Bonus track
11 ~ Space Oddity (Alternate Take)

And here's the official blurb...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mike Garson - The Bowie Variations For Piano

Original interpretations and impressions of David Bowie's best music written and performed by Mike Garson.

For over three decades, Mike Garson was associated with rock legend David Bowie as his keyboardist and creative collaborator. He also worked with Free Flight, Stan Getz, Mel Torme, Thad Jones, and others. The computer graphics used on the cover and in the booklet are more examples of Garson's creativity.

This "Prof." Johnson HDCD recording was made in a fine concert hall, and has Reference Recording's signature Grammy-winning sonics.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shortly after the release of the CD, the first volume of sheet music will be made available for purchase. It will have the scores for the following four pieces exactly as Mike played them...

01 ~ Space Oddity
02 ~ John, I'm Only Dancing
03 ~ Life On Mars?
04 ~ Tribute To DB

Obviously the sheet music is aimed mainly at pianists, but it's a cool companion to the CD either way.

These pieces work in their own right away from the originals, much like Philip Glass' Bowie interpretations...so, even though they're instrumental, if you're expecting karaoke please send in your recordings of your first attempts to sing along!

In fact, I'm a little embarrassed to admit that when Mike sent me a preview track last month, I couldn't identify it until the tracklisting narrowed the field for me...then of course, it was obvious.

I've seen various July release dates, but Mike reckons it's released on the 15th. Either way you can purchase the CD from the usual outlets but you can also pre-order directly from Mike by getting in touch with him here.

UPDATE: Mike has told me that those of you that order directly from him via the above link will get a signed copy if you so wish.

MP3s and the sheet music will be available in a couple of weeks from mikegarson.com.

Finally, the Mike Garson Official YouTube Channel is worth checking out for a couple of DB-related snippets from Mike.

In one of the pieces Mike talks about having to go out on stage before David and the band, at David's suggestion, to play something as an intro piece. He talks about having to go out cold in front of a hundred thousand people to warm them up with A Foggy Day In London Town.

Now, I haven't researched this, but if memory serves, I think Mike may be confusing two different events.

The show he played A Foggy Day In London Town at, I THINK was the BBC Radio Theatre in 2000. I believe Mike is confusing that with Glastonbury at which I THINK he played Greensleeves...and while my brain is in this mode I believe the BowieNet show at The Roseland Ballroom in NY the same year was treated to First We Take Manhattan. Am I wrong?

UPDATE: No I'm not, Mike has now confirmed the above.

Stay tuned for a contest to win copies of Mike Garson's Bowie Variations For Piano CD shortly.

Mr And Mrs Jones Cover Feature In Times Magazine

And if the homework brings you down, Then we'll throw it on the fire...

The Times Magazine (free with Saturday's newspaper) has a seven-page Iman interview/feature. The magazine is also blurbed on the front page of the newspaper.

Though there is nothing new pictorially among it's pages, the Iman interview is a great read, covering the following subjects: "...escaping her homeland as a refugee, forging her passport, founding a cosmetics brand and bagging herself a rock star."

Here's the introductory paragraph...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

?I am NOT married to David Bowie,? says Iman adamantly, shaking her head and wagging her finger at me firmly. Oh, I say, somewhat taken aback. ?No, no, I don?t even know him.? She takes a sip of her coffee and it crosses my mind that maybe this isn?t Iman at all, but someone who has been sent along to do the interview for her. Then she grins, looking unmistakably like the Somali supermodel who was the first black woman to front major advertising campaigns, who became a Revlon girl and muse to Yves Saint Laurent, and who refused to work if she was offered less than the other models. ?I am married to David Jones. They are two totally different people.?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can read the full thing here, but I'll leave you with another paragraph that seems to suggest David still misses Dear Old Blighty but manages to distract himself by helping Lexi with her homework...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The picture she paints of Bowie is far removed from the enigma of popular imagination. ?He?s not an enigma at home,? she chuckles. David, she says, loves nothing better than to read the British papers every morning and listen to the BBC: ?He doesn?t believe anything unless he hears it on the BBC.? She says he has given up trying to persuade her that they should move to the UK. ?We went once in the summer and the weather was glorious and he was trying to convince me that that?s how it is all the time.? She describes him as a very involved, hands-on father. ?He?s a great dad. He?s always engaging Lexi and reads a lot with her. She is studying Ancient Egypt at school and so David was just helping her with her project ? they were building a tomb together and he made a mask with her.? Iman says that she and David have lunch at home together most days.

Those of you who have been following the BBC's excellent police detective, crime drama doo dah, Luther, will no doubt have already noticed the things I'm about to point out to those that haven't been watching.

If you intend to buy the DVDs or watch the current series on iPlayer, I should warn you that this piece contains spoilers.

To set the scene, here's the BEEB's blurb regarding the London-located programme...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A dark psychological crime drama starring Idris Elba (The Wire) as DCI John Luther, a near-genius murder detective whose brilliant mind can't always save him from the dangerous violence of his passions. Luther is a man struggling with his own terrible demons, who might be as dangerous as the depraved murderers he hunts.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you haven't seen Luther, perhaps you're familiar with British actor Idris Elba's character Russell "Stringer" Bell in The Wire.

Anyway, in Luther, Elba's character is a very smart, not-to-be-messed-with kind of guy who enjoys the thrill that living precariously gives him.

He seems to have become even more reckless in series two following the murder of his estranged wife, Zoe, in series one, to the point of playing solo Russian Roulette in his apartment before leaving for work.

And though I certainly wouldn't like to think there is a stereotypical Bowie fan, Luther wouldn't have particularly struck me as being a likely candidate to favour the cut-up technique that David Bowie adopted in the 1970s.

The scene above is from episode four of the first series, Decoupage. Luther is sat surrounded by pictures related to the murder he is currently attempting to solve. He is joined by DS Justin Ripley, who is sat on the desk opposite and eventually by DCI Ian Reed, to his right.

Here follows the dialogue between them...

Ripley: What's all this?
Luther: Decoupage, the cut-up technique. Take a bit of text, cut it up, randomise it, make new text, see new patterns.
Ripley: Where did you learn this?
Luther: David Bowie, it's how he wrote his lyrics.
Ripley: Are you a fan?
Luther: Don't I look like a fan?
Ripley: What, songs about like aliens 'n that?
Luther: There's a bit more to him than aliens, I'll make you a tape.
Ripley: A what, sorry?

DCI Ian Reed enters the scene, a man who is clearly more canny than Ripley...

Reed: Ah, gone all David Bowie on us.

A brief aside...Reed is played by actor Steven Mackintosh, who you may remember played the Charlie Kay character in The Buddha of Suburbia...among many other impressive roles.

Anyway, when series one ended, I expected the above exchange to be a surreal one-off reference...but there was more to come in season two..

In the picture at the top of this piece, two important characters in the series two sub-plot, Jenny Jones and the menacing Toby Kent, (yep....Jones, Kent) are pictured in one of the more harrowing scenes...though there are many.

Jones has been taken under Luther's wing after he rescued her from the clutches of Kent's gang and enforced prostitution.

Naturally, a psychopath such as Toby Kent wouldn't allow such a loss without some form of compensation, and so he embarked on a series of blackmails wherein Luther had to hand over intelligence regarding other crime bosses...obviously at a high risk to his own job

Not happy with Luther's tardy progress in response to his latest demand, Kent makes good on his threat and tracks down Jenny Jones to Luther's apartment while he is out.

Jones herself had just returned to the apartment with a wrapped gift for Luther, which she leaves on a table for his return as a token of her appreciation for his help.

Here's the dialogue that follows after Kent spies the gift on the table...

Kent: What's that?
Jones: (While struggling to keep the gift from Kent) It's not yours.
Kent: (Tears paper off while holding a knife to reveal the above signed print of a live Bowie shot from 1976) Ooooh...Oooh. David Bowie. Oh my god, that is so sweet.
Jones: You do know you're ill? There's something wrong with you.
Kent: Yeah apparently there is...

Kent then goes on to describe a particularly grizzly and horrifically graphic childhood memory of his first forays in to animal dissection.

This second reference to Luther's love of Bowie got me thinking that scriptwriter Neil Cross must be a bit of a fan. It didn't take me long to find this from the current issue of booknotes...which not only betrays his fondness for Bowie but also hints at his generally dark outlook that comes through so strongly in Luther...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Neil Cross

When I want to feel like I could go outside, pick up my car and throw it past the horizon, I crank up David Bowie?s post-apocalyptic, post-glam masterpiece Diamond Dogs. If I need to get my head into the kind of dank place where bad things dwell, it?s Swans? remorseless and frankly terrifying Great Annihilator.

When I need something spectral that taps directly into the English folk subconscious, it?s Laura Marling?s ?Alas I Cannot Swim?. This morning I bought Zoe Keating?s One Cello x 16: Natoma. I?m listening to it now, and I?ll be listening to it a great deal more over the coming months.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The final episode of series two of Luther airs at 9:00pm on Tuesday 5th July on BBC One, while a DVD box set of both series one and two is due on the 11th.

Just realised that the headline of this piece could be taken the wrong way....hope I didn't get your hopes up too high.
