Tvc 15 Is 35

Oh oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh oh...***

Though it didn't particularly strike me as incongruous at the time, TVC 15 was a bit of sore thumb on Station To Station in that it seemed uncharacteristically playful given the overall mood of the album.

Apparently based on an Iggy Pop tale regarding the consumption of his girlfriend by a ravenous TV set, the song was never going to have the gravitas of The Bewlay Brothers. But it remains a cracking track nevertheless.

Released on the eve of Bowie's 1976 London shows and performed during them, TVC 15 had the poorest UK chart performance of any of David's RCA 45s since Changes, up to that point.

Despite getting to the chorus 20 seconds sooner via a 3:29 single edit (down from 5:28) the single only managed to reach #33 in the UK.

This must be due to some degree to the fact that TVC 15 wasn't advertised in the music press in the UK (that's a US advert in the montage above) in fact it's the only UK RCA single I can think of that there was no press ad for.

It also seems that the record was pressed in smaller quantities than usual in the UK (it's the first of the UK RCA singles for which there exists no solid centre pressing) so perhaps people wanted it but just couldn't buy it.

In other territories RCA got their act together with various picture cover releases, a small sampling of which above.

*** I was still at school when this record came out and I was checking the lyrics in Disco 45 or Songwords magazine during lessons. However, my geography teacher, Mr Maynard, caught me in the act and decided it would be fun to share with the class.

He took the mag from me and stood at the front to say something to all assembled along these lines: "It seems Mark thought his education would be served better today by reading the words to David Bowie's latest release, rather than bothering with geography. So I thought it would be nice if you could all hear a bit from the song TVC 15 and make up your own minds."

Then, in the slowest, most deliberate deadpan voice, and for what seemed like a couple of hours, he read out the following selection...

"Oh oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh oh. Transition, Transmission, Transition, Transmission. Oh my T V C one five, oh oh, T V C one five, Oh my T V C one five, oh oh, T V C one five, Oh my T V C one five, oh oh, T V C one five, Oh my T V C one five, oh oh, T V C one five."

Of course, the kids were in fits of laughter and I thought Bowie had been done a great injustice. Why hadn't it been a song that worked better on paper, such as Life On Mars?

Anyway, geography was as much use to me as David Bowie lyrics were to Mr Maynard. The following year I was discussing the merits of David Bowie's latest album, "Heroes", with one of my young and enthusiastic new tutors at art college.

David And Iman Attend Dkms Fifth Annual Gala

Gorgeous girls are bound to meet...

David and Iman attended the DKMS' 5th Annual Gala this evening (Thursday).

The Gala, Linked Against Leukemia honouring Rihanna and Michael Clinton, was hosted by Katharina Harf at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

In the picture on the right above, David is introduced to Rihanna who you may remember shared the spotlight with DB for the recent Renault Clio advertising campaign. (01.06.2011 NEWS: SPACE ODDITY FEATURED IN NEW RENAULT CLIO ADVERT)

Speaking of fashion advice, DB was dashing and debonair in completely comfortable CoSTUME NATIONAL while Iman looked wonderful wearing Wu.

Loads Of Little Bowie Bits On The Goggle Box

Switch on the TV we may pick him up on Channel Two...

Thought I'd do a quick round-up of a few bits I've spotted on TV in the UK this week. First up is an advert for the 3CD UMTV/EMI TV compilation, Best Of British, which contains Life On Mars?.

The ad features an animation of a handful of the sixty British artists that appear on the CD, with a snippet of their featured song.

As you can see, they have portrayed Bowie as he is in the video for Life On Mars?, albeit with an Aladdin Sane flash on his phizog...and I'm sure you've all noticed that they've used the wrong telephone box too...That's a K6, not a K2...but you knew that.

Next up is one of the new iPhone 4 adverts for the 'If you don't have an iPhone' campaign.

It's only 30 seconds long, but the Best of Bowie gets a couple of onscreen seconds which can only help spread the word. You can view it here on YouTube.

Finally, this one is hard to talk about if you're not already familiar with Channel 4's brilliant new comedy, the hilarious CAMPUS...

If you've been watching it, you will know where this is leading, if you haven't, get yourself acquainted now via 4od.

CAMPUS concerns itself with the often surreal goings on at KIRKE University and the latest instalment (episode four: Come Together) sees the sexually persistent Professor of English Lit, Matt Beer, closing in on the rather delicate Senior Maths Lecturer, Imogen Moffatt, with the help of David Bowie's Suffragette City.

Without giving too much away, around 21 minutes into the episode we see Imogen strolling around the campus grounds, completely lost to the world around her, listening to Ann-Margret's What Am I Supposed To Do? via her iPod.

The tranquillity is shattered by jump cuts between Imogen and the predatory Matt Beer enjoying Suffragette City on his own iPod.

When he spies Imogen, Matt approaches her and removes her ear pieces while inserting his own into her ears during the line: "She's a total blam blam".

He then sweeps her off into a tango-like dance to the song, much to the clear delight of them both.

The set, which contains 35 CDs signed by David Bowie, made an incredibly useful $10,173.98 USD (approx. £ 6,201.00)

And there have been box sets that contain a Bowie 7", War Child's "Heroes" box springs to mind and The Boat That Rocked promo 7" box set, but these are compilations and don't count as a Bowie only release.

Granted, the above release of Cat People doesn't have Bowie on the B-side, but nevertheless, both of the above are UK vinyl Bowie 7" 45s, however you look at it.

The 2002 orange vinyl Slow Burn 45 is considered to be an EU-wide release (some listings even have it as Germany only) so that doesn't count either.

Sorry, I'm rambling, but I'm just trying to qualify the headline of this piece. And so, on to the contest...

William Shatner Is Searching For Major Tom

I think my spaceship knows which way to go...

In a piece entitled The making of William Shatner in The Times back on March 12th, Captain Kirk himself announced how he planned to take on fellow space traveller, Major Tom, in a rock opera.

Well, at the time I thought I had dreamt it and the suggestion seemed to go away. But, with the recent announcement on his website of a collection of space-themed cover songs, entitled Searching For Major Tom, it seems The Shat is one step closer to that realisation.

Here's what the 80-year-old star of sitcom, Shit My Dad Says, said about Space Oddity in aforementioned Times piece...

"Major Tom is a character in several David Bowie songs. I?m doing a rock opera, if you will, that involves what happened to Major Tom. What was he thinking out there in space? He begins to think about how he learnt to fly and the love of his wife; as he dies he begins to imagine Heaven and Hell. All these are dramatised by the songs I?ve chosen. It?s either going to be the best thing you?ve ever heard or terrible things will be written about it."

Well, I will do William the honour of at least hearing the track before I judge it. I won't even take into account his previous convictions that saw him make the main protagonist of Elton John's Space Oddity...I mean Rocket Bloke, glad he was no longer of this Earth.

Space Oddity features Alan Parsons on keyboards and ex-Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore...you'd think they would know better.

Bowie Tune Used In Final Episode Of Jamie's Dream School

Did you ever have a dream or two...

While I'm perfectly aware of just how lovely a song David Bowie's 2003 Reality track Days is, things always seem to sound even more impressive when they're unexpected and out of context.

This happened last night while watching the final episode of Jamie Oliver's latest mission to save the nation's youth from successive governments' indifference in the UK, Jamie's Dream School.

Jamie is an easy target for the cynical, but I applaud his attempts to change things that he shouldn't even be having to get involved with in the first place...don't get me started.

As I was saying, about fifteen minutes in to this latest episode, that familiar intro played in the background on a loop until the vocal kicked in to jolly good effect.

I know this isn't much of a news story, particularly as it seems Bowie's 70s and early 80s hits frequently get used on TV here in the UK.

However, I'm sure you'll agree that it's always cool to hear a bit of Bowie when you least expect it and particularly such a recent work. Cracking song too.

For those of you that don't regularly look at the press release section, you may have missed the news about the Bowie items currently up for grabs via eBay auctions for EMIfamily4Japan. There are two Bowie lots available right now. The first is the Station To Station Deluxe box set which ends on April 15th, 11:50:39 PDT, and is currently at GBP £160.00. (Approximately US $260.22)

That's generous bidding considering you can still buy a new set for less than half that. So to whoever finally wins that one, thank you for your generosity, it is appreciated.

The second item is an incredible lot. The complete EMI David Bowie back catalogue with each CD signed by David Bowie. That's 35 CDs in total, apparently.

This one ends on April 21st, 10:02:25 PDT, and is currently at GBP £361.00. (Approximately US $587.13) So that's already at more than a tenner per release and we've barely started...I have a feeling this one will end up fetching several times that ammount if the other auction is anything to go by.

London, 11 April 2011 -- Artists and songwriters including Katy Perry, The Beatles, David Bowie, The Beach Boys, Iron Maiden, Gorillaz, Sting, David Gilmour and Tinie Tempah have donated exclusive personal items and memorabilia to the second phase of the EMI family?s charity auction to raise funds to help the Red Cross support people affected by last month?s earthquake and tsunami in Japan. 
 
The latest round of the charity auction, which is one of the biggest in eBay?s history, kicks off today and closes on April 21. There are still four days to go until the end of the first phase of the auction, featuring items from artists and writers including Coldplay, Beastie Boys, Jane Birkin, Depeche Mode, 30 Seconds To Mars, Simple Minds, Alice In Chains, and The Chemical Brothers.
 
Items added to the auction today include the 1987 Ferrari 412 as featured in Daft Punk?s film ?Electroma?, a cupcake trampoline used on stage in Katy Perry?s current California Dreams world tour, access to private concert rehearsal by Sting, a one-off diamante head used onstage by Deadmau5, a limited edition ?Yellow Submarine? bicycle issued to mark the re-release of The Beatles? famous movie, three framed and signed prints of David Gilmour taken in Gdansk, and more than 30 albums individually signed by David Bowie.
 
Also included in the auction is the MacBook used by David Guetta to create the demos for his hit album ?One Love?, the hand written lyrics to ?God Only Knows? from the Beach Boys? Brian Wilson, Tinie Tempah?s pink blazer from the ?Frisky? video, and one of the four original handmade "Zero" shirts worn by the Smashing Pumpkins? Billy Corgan for the release and tour of ?Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness?.
 
All funds raised from the charity auction will be used towards the Japanese Red Cross disaster relief efforts to help those affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Funds will be used for the on-going provision of immediate relief to support the affected population during their recovery. EMI Group has committed to match all funds raised from the auction up to a maximum of one million euros.
 
The first phase of the charity auction ends on April 15th, with the second phase ending on April 21st. All the items can be viewed at ebay.com/EMIfamily4Japan.

This story first broke on Saturday courtesy of The Sun newspaper in the UK. I was hoping it would just flap around in the dirt a bit and die. But, alas and alak, in the absence of any official denial of the tale, it's been picked up and is currently flying around the globe as if it were gospel.

Well here comes that official comment, straight from the equine north 'n south...yes, that would be David Bowie and he summed up the notion that he is, or has been, working with Mick Jagger on a film script for an upcoming comedy with this well-chosen word: "Piffle".

That should do it.

David Bowie Is Anna Calvi's Absolute Hero

And he could have married Anna with the red silk blouse...

I first stumbled upon Anna Calvi via her intriguing and minimalist cover of Sound And Vision some time last year. I made the quantum leap to the conclusion that she might be a bit of a Bowie fan and decided to keep an ear on her.

I bought her debut album back in January, but I have to admit that it wasn't until I recently saw the delicious video for the brilliant new single, Blackout, that (leaving aside the title of the song) I thought she was at least visually quite Bowie-esque.

The full-page picture of her in the current edition of NME (dated April 9th) piqued my interest further for obvious reasons, (note pictorial comparison to still from Boys Keep Swinging video) and I thought the coincidence too great for it not to be a nod to David Bowie.

It seems my hunch wasn't unfounded as Anna points out in the NME interview that David Bowie is her "absolute hero". Here's a bit from said probing...

Well, if that situation ever arose, I would hope that Anna would refrain from such internal foul-mouthed thoughts and not say those words in her head or anywhere else for that matter.

NME also has a two-part online interview with Calvi, wherein she announces that the first song she ever wrote was about imagining she was in David Bowie's band!

Anyway, she's a very cool lady and you should go check out her videos, including Blackout, at the official website and buy her stuff while you're about it.

Tickets For Jd Set Bowie Night In Glagow All Gone

He'll build a Glasgow asylum, with just a hint of mayhem...

If you were hoping to attend this event that we told you about last month (03.14.2011 NEWS: JACK DANIELS ALL-STAR BOWIE TRIBUTE IN GLASGOW IN APRIL) but have not yet heard that you have successfully blagged yourself tickets, then I'm afraid it's unlikely that you have.

Here's a bit from the Glasgow section of THEJDSET.CO.UK...

"We're sorry but all tickets to the Glasgow JD Set have been snapped up, and all the lucky winners have been notified. Keep checking back to see footage of the gig."

I'm not sure if they intend to stream the whole show online, so it's probably best to keep an eye on the website for further updates.

Meanwhile, here's a hint of what Ian McCulloch will be performing courtesy of CLASH magazine. But be warned, aside from Ian being a bit potty-mouthed, he seems to find it hard to talk about the subject in hand...though, thanks to the persistence of the interviewer, we finally get to hear a couple of relevant answers.

London, 5 April 2011 -- Artists and songwriters from across the EMI family are raising funds to help the Red Cross support people affected by last month?s earthquake and tsunami in Japan, through an incredible worldwide auction of personal items and memorabilia.

The charity auction, which will be managed by eBay, features items from some of the world?s biggest stars, including Coldplay, Norah Jones, Katy Perry, Gorillaz, Iron Maiden, Jane Birkin, the Beach Boys, David Guetta, Michael Franti, Lady Antebellum, The Chemical Brothers, Depeche Mode, Celtic Woman, 30 Seconds To Mars, Rosanne Cash, Daft Punk, Herbert Grönemeyer, Angela Gheorghiu, Keith Urban, Good Charlotte, and The Beatles.

All funds raised will be used towards the Japanese Red Cross disaster relief efforts to help those affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Funds will be used for the on-going provision of immediate relief to support the affected population during their recovery. EMI Group has committed to match all funds raised from the auction up to a maximum of one million euros.

The first phase of the charity auction starts today (April 5) and will run until April 15th, with more than 200 exclusive money-can?t-buy items. A second phase of the auction will take place between April 11th ? 21st. All the items can be viewed at ebay.com/EMIfamily4Japan.

Items included in the first phase of the auction include Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin?s jacket from the 2010 Viva La Vida world tour, Jane Birkin?s own Birkin handbag designed by Hermes, a pair of vintage speakers from Abbey Road?s famous Studio 3, five nights at Michael Franti?s yoga retreat in Bali, the Beastie Boys? Japanese MTV award, and a signed limited edition lithographic Depeche Mode print.

The second phase of the charity auction will include a 1987 Ferrari 412 as featured in Daft Punk?s film ?Electroma?, Katy Perry?s cupcake trampoline from her current California Dreams world tour, a limited edition Beatles? ?Yellow Submarine Schwinn bicycle, a signed guitar from Norah Jones, the MacBook used by David Guetta to create the demos for ?One Love?, framed hand written lyrics from Brian Wilson, Tinie Tempah?s pink blazer from the ?Frisky? video, and a limited edition Gorillaz lithograph signed by Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn.

Multi-Grammy award winning singer and songwriter Norah Jones said: "Japan has been one of my favorite countries to visit and my heart goes out to everyone affected by this disaster. I'm so glad I can be part of this fundraising effort along with the EMI family."

There are three items donated by the world famous Abbey Road Studios, including an in-depth tour of the studio (which is otherwise not open to members of the public), a pair of Quested Q412 loudspeakers, system, amps and crossovers (circa 1987) from Abbey Road Studio 3, and a 1921 Steinway grand piano from the now-closed Olympic Studios, along with a photograph of it being played by Bono.

In addition to these auction items, the charity auction will feature other very special items including a collection of all 37 editions of the US hit NOW compilation series, plus a number of signed CDs, box sets, posters and other items from artists including Jane?s Addiction, Robbie Williams, John Lennon, David Bowie, Radiohead, Pink Floyd and The Band.

Space Oddity Demo And Press Sheets Sell For Over £500

You've really made the grade...

This eBay auction ended at the tail end of last month, but it's still worth a mention here, if not only to illustrate the ever-increasing value of rare Bowie paper items.

The auction ended after 22 bids at £535 GBP (approx. $877 USD).

Normally you could expect to pick up a mint copy of the UK Philips stereo Space Oddity/Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud promo 45 for around £150 to £200.

However, this copy and the press releases were described thus: "The record has been played a number of times and has a few light marks on the playing surfaces. The record grades a conservative very good. The record comes with an historic press release on Philips-headed paper that is in fine condition. The record also comes with a two-sided ?Profile? of David Bowie and the creation of ?Space Oddity? ? again on headed paper."

Had this 45 been auctioned without the accompanying press sheets and in this condition, I reckon it would have fetched around £120 to £150.

Let's say somewhere in-between those figures then. £135 from £535 leaves a nice round number of £400, or £200 per press release.

I think it's great that Bowie items as old as these continue to surface in such good condition all these years later. Speaking of the Philips issue of the Space Oddity 45...
