Marseille Set List And Pix From Celine

DB in Marseille last night by BowieNetter Celine Caux.

Marseille, hey that's really something...

Last night's performance by David Bowie, in the beautiful French city of Marseille, made it difficult to believe that only a few days previously he had been suffering from laryngitis. But, in typical Bowie style, rather than take it easy he chose to include Life On Mars? in the set for the first time... one of the most vocally challenging songs of his repertoire!

Apparently our man was on top form, and considering he had just gotten over laryngitis, he looked impossibly fit... as a butchers dog some would say. Some of the boys on the BowieNet MBs will also be pleased to learn that David was at his sexiest best. But seriously, David is clearly more than ready to perform again, and ear-witnesses said his voice is as powerful as it has ever been.

Mr David Bowie modelling his Supro guitar at last night's show.

Thanx again to BowieNetter Celine for these great shots from last night. Hopefully we'll be getting more from Celine after tonight's show in Lyon. Anyway, here's the 23-song set list, supplied by a cast-of-thousands, but special thanx to Susans and Simone in particular:

Marseille November 14th 2003

01 Rebel Rebel
02 New Killer Star
03 Reality
04 Fame
05 Cactus
06 Afraid
07 China Girl
08 The Loneliest Guy
09 The Man Who Sold The World
10 Hallo Spaceboy
11 Sunday
12 Under Pressure
13 Life On Mars?
14 Ashes To Ashes
15 The Motel
16 Loving The Alien
17 Never Get OId
18 Changes
19 I'm Afraid Of Americans
20 "Heroes"

(Encore)
21 Five Years
22 Suffragette City
23 Ziggy Stardust

All our love to Bianca who apparently missed last night's show after breaking her ankle and must now rest in hospital. I'm sure the pain of the broken bone is nothing to the pain you must be feeling at missing the Bowie shows that you'll no longer be able to attend ...but, for what it's worth, our thoughts are with you for a speedy recovery, at least for your birthday in Dublin... and, as I'm sure you know by now, David sends his love and similar wishes.

Db Interview In Today's Times

The Times they are a-telling...

David Bowie has given a short interview to Paul Sexton for the T2 section of today's Times here in the UK. You can whiz over to the online version of the piece by clicking on the image above now, or you can check out a short debate started on our very own MBs by reading on first:

Inevitably BowieNet can occasionally feel like a mutual lovefest, but the chatroom mood is often less deferential than you?d expect.

Taken playfully to task for continuing to perform China Girl, of which many followers are not fond, the singer responds in a mock headmaster tone: ?For a number of you I will be doing songs with which you may be bored. I, on the other hand, am not bored. And, unlike you, I am at every show.?

Continuing the point with me, he says: ?See, some songs are great, but if you play them over and over again they don?t have that much in them. It just becomes singalong time, and it?s not much fun for us as musicians. Like Starman, it?s a nice song, and we?ll do that occasionally, but to do that every night, it really doesn?t draw upon your prowess.

?I can?t do a full evening?s worth of those because I?ll go barmy. You really become a karaoke machine. It?s great to be able to do The Motel (from Outside) and 5:15 The Angels Have Gone (from Heathen) and things like that, because they really push you as a performer and a musician.?

Good stuff. As I say, you can read the full thing online by clicking on the image above.

Mojo Special: Top 20 Best Bowie Songs Ever?

I heard telephones, opera house, favourite melodies...

I'm sure you've all managed to get your hands on a copy of the MOJO "Special Limited Edition" BOWIE special that should have hit most of the UK newsagents today. Though I've not had time to read the thing yet, (It's 148 pages for goodness sake) a quick scan through makes it obvious that it's been put together with love and attention to detail, as is the way with this excellent series of MOJO specials.

Though I can't comment on the editorial content yet, I'm pretty sure this is just the kind of publication that fans love... full of great pictures, including some wonderful unpublished shots, and loads of other stuff which is outlined on the back cover: Exclusive new interviews with Tony Visconti, Ken Pitt, Nile Rodgers and more... The untold stories... The 20 best Bowie songs of all time... Every original album interviewed... Rare books and memorabilia... Plus the chance to win some cool Mick Rock stuff.

Here's what MOJO say about this latest special edition on their site:

MOJO BOWIE HAS FALLEN TO EARTH!

Just in time for his upcoming arena tour, MOJO presents a full-colour glossy special edition celebrating the life and work of David Bowie, rock 'n' roll's most remarkable superstar.

Featuring new interviews, unseen photographs, the untold stories, rare memorabilia, every Bowie album reviewed and The Top 20 Best Bowie Songs Ever... as voted by you. Available in all good newsagents from 14 November.

Well, that "voted by you" translates as over 150 writers and musicians who were asked during September to name their favourite Bowie track, and also fans who voted via Paul Kinder's jolly lovely BowieWonderWorld.com. If you don't want the countdown spoiled before you get this publication (which you can order by clicking on the image above) then look away now, as here is that top twenty, (in descending order) which is bound to start some debate on the MBs:

MOJO's TOP 20 BEST BOWIE SONGS EVER:

20 Word On A Wing
19 Boys Keep Swinging
18 Quicksand
17 Rebel Rebel
16 Rock 'n' Roll Suicide
15 The Jean Genie
14 Moonage Daydream
13 Drive-In Saturday
12 Let's Dance
11 Ziggy Stardust
10 Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (Reprise)
09 Changes
08 Five Years
07 Starman
06 Sound And Vision
05 Space Oddity
04 Station To Station
03 Ashes To Ashes
02 Life On Mars?
01 "Heroes"

So there you have it. I have to say I agree with about fifty percent of the choices, which, coincidentally, is just about the same percentage of songs that David has performed from this list (including tonight's show) during the current A Reality Tour.

So, dear BowieNetter, I look forward to reading your thoughts on the MBs shortly.

Exclusive Gad Tour Diary In The Daily Mirror

So I've been writing just for you...

Today's Daily Mirror here in the UK, has published an exclusive tour diary written by Gail Ann Dorsey in their pullout The Ticket section. It's a great read, and Gail's unbridled enthusiasm shines through... it's so good to see that she still gets excited at the prospect of playing for a live audience after all these years.

Under a headline (nodding to Ian Hunter) of "DIARY OF A ROCK 'N' ROLL STAR", the double-page spread covers the shows from the start of the tour in Copenhagen on October 7th, up to the Berlin show on November 3rd. The piece is peppered with exclusive pix, including a shot of David and Gail backstage with that raven in Cologne.

Here's the entry regarding the first show in Copenhagen.

OCTOBER 7th, COPENHAGEN

Tonight was the kick off of the David Bowie "Reality Tour!" Yeah! We've spent so many weeks and months in rehearsals and doing television appearances that everyone was bursting to finally play in front of an audience! It made for a very satisfying show. David designed an incredible stage set that none of us had seen until we arrived at production rehearsals in Brussels last week.

The set involves among other things, tiny staircases with no railings, and narrow, elevated ramps that frame the stage on either side and across the back. To me it's pretty frightening to walk around up there - especially in flashing lights! David dances and struts around on those platforms like he's taking a stroll in the park! What a pro!

In our dress rehearsals, he choreographed an opening entrance that involves me walking across one of the raised platforms, but I daren't tell him I get a little vertigo up there. I made it tonight without fainting. I'll be brave and get used to it. It's a challenge. Besides, it's exciting to make an entrance. Where else would I be having this much fun?

You can read the whole thing online by clicking on the image above.

Tony Thompson Dies In Los Angeles Aged 48

Sad to report that drummer/percussionist Tony Thompson, has lost his fight against renal cancer in Los Angeles three days short of his 49th birthday. Thompson, who died yesterday, was probably best known to Bowie fans for his work on 1983's Let's Dance album and the subsequent Serious Moonlight World Tour.

Having begun his career playing with Patti LaBelle's band, he met Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, with whom he formed Chic in 1976, the band which became synonymous with disco. His session work meant that he also played for Madonna, Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart and Debbie Harry, and he also enjoyed a stint with the Power Station, a spin-off from Duran Duran that included Robert Palmer.

Thompson is survived by his wife, the actress Patrice Jennings, and two step-children.

Toulouse Show Cancelled

I said I'd let you know immediately I had any updates after last night's news that David was suffering from some kind of throat condition. Well, I can now tell you that unfortunately David has come down with a case of laryngitis, and for this reason he has most regretfully had to cancel tomorrow's show in Toulouse. You know he doesn't make these decisions lightly and anybody present at last night's show will understand just how he really does his best not to let anyone down.David does expect to be fine in time for Friday's show in Marseille, but obviously we'll let you know if there are any further developments.

Ngo / Waterloo Sunset 'cyber Single' Online Now

Make some new computer thing...

David Bowie and Sony Music in the UK have made Never Get Old and Waterloo Sunset available as a 'cyber-single' in the form of a digital download. Fans can download the new single for just £2.99 via the Sony Music UK site.

Everyone who downloads the Never Get Old / Waterloo Sunset bundle will automatically be entered into a draw to win a framed Reality Gold presentation disk, engraved personally to the winner and signed by DB himself. As if that wasn't enough, there are also five limited edition canvas art prints of the Reality album artwork signed by David Bowie as runners up prizes. You may remember this beautiful and highly collectable item in a recent BowieNet competition.

It seems the two-track promo of Never Get Old / Waterloo Sunset that we recently gave away to a whole bunch of lucky BowieNetters, (11.04.2003 NEWS: NEVER GET OLD 2-TRACK PROMO WINNERS) is also becoming more valuable by the minute. This item has been going on eBay for silly money, with one copy selling in the last couple of days for £72 GBP, or approximately $120 USD... so £2.99 is a snip!

Of course this isn't the first cyber-single from David Bowie... Anyone remember Telling Lies? At the time it was claimed that over 300,000 people downloaded the original Internet-only release version of Telling Lies. Anyway, I digress, if you're in the UK, click on the image above to take you to the Sony Music UK site, where you too can join in the fun... well not you, because you're in the US... you neither up in Canada there... or you down below in Australia... etc., etc., etc.

Final Uk Ticket Update From Bill Z

By the end of this week, those of you with ticket problems who notified Ticketzone will have received your additional tickets as promised. Some of you have gotten great seats, which means you had really bad ones to begin with. Others have gotten average seats which, as we?ve been saying, means your initial tickets were pretty good.We are out of tickets. So if you have not notified us of any problem before, we cannot help you. This has been a difficult process for everyone involved. So to all of you, I want to say thank you for your incredible patience. There?s a reason this fan club is the envy of the music industry. It?s the members. To Domingo, Rachel and Richard I want to say thanks for helping so much with a problem you had nothing to do with.To Blammo, Howard, Jeff and all at UltraStar, you never stopped caring about making it right. Even when the emails got nasty. For those of you in Block 35 at Wembley, think long and hard before you give those tickets away. This does not mean we are finished with all of the problems. There are still some VIP issues, missing tickets etc.. that are still being worked on. But, as for the selling of bad locations in the U.K., all I can say is thanks to you all and I hope you enjoy the shows!!!Best,Bill Z

Nice Set List Details

Not Nice...In fact, I'm afraid this is another Blammo shot from Paris.

Yes he was awful nice, Really quite out of sight...

Nice wasn't particularly nice to David Bowie as his A Reality Tour rolled into town today. David apparently explained early on that tonight's show was going to be a little different due to some kind of throat condition.

I've had no official word about the exact nature of this condition as of yet, but, whatever it is, by all accounts David battled on through a shorter than normal set, but still managed to put on a great show... "Heroes" being a particular highlight.

I know you'll all want to join me in wishing David a speedy recovery, and rest assured, we'll let you know with as much advance notice as possible in the unlikely event that any dates are affected. I'll also let you know immediately I hear any news from David himself.

Here's the twenty-song set list from tonight:

Nice November 10th 2003

01 Rebel Rebel
02 New Killer Star
03 Reality
04 Fame
05 Cactus
06 Afraid
07 China Girl
08 The Man Who Sold The World
09 Hallo Spaceboy
10 Sunday
11 Under Pressure
12 Ashes To Ashes
13 The Motel
14 Be My Wife
15 Sound And Vision
16 Breaking Glass
17 I'm Afraid Of Americans
18 "Heroes"
19 Suffragette City
20 Ziggy Stardust

Thankfully David has a day off tomorrow, before he continues this string of French dates with Wednesday's show scheduled for Toulouse.

Db At The Bbc On Monday Next

"Hmmm... He's going to use that pen, but I want him to use this one... What to do?"
Lard now has the pen situation worked out, after the terrible deliberation of last year.

My tour edition CD comes out next Monday, and me I'm on a radio show...

While he is in the city for his A Reality Tour date at Manchester's M.E.N. Arena next Monday the 17th, David Bowie is scheduled to appear on BBC Radio 1's Mark and Lard show too.

BowieNetters will know that this will be David's gazillionth appearance on the show, and if any of those past broadcasts are anything to go by, it will be a jolly good larf all round.

Our man is expected in the second half of the show which airs between thirteen and fifteen hundred hours Manchester time. You can listen live online by clicking on the image above on the day.

Amneville Set List Details

Db in Amneville tonight by BowieNetter Celine Caux.

Amneville fetish...

The Bowie show rolled into Amneville in France today for a show at Le Galaxie. Our on-the-road eye and ear witnesses report that tonight's performance from David was another of those among the best of the tour so far.

The 25-song set kicked off a little differently, starting with The Loneliest Guy and Days, and continuing with the more recent show openers, Rebel Rebel and New Killer Star, transposed.

Tonight's comedy highlight happened when David wiggled the limbs of a toy tiger, (thrown on stage by an audience member) as he sang: "Like tigers, like tigers can swim" during "Heroes".

One of those sexy ones for Keiths by the lovely Ms Caux.

Thanx to BowieNetter Celine 'Frenchie' Caux for these wonderful shots from tonight's show. Celine also gave me a little explanation about David's French mumblings that I mentioned yesterday: "David talked about moules frites (mussels and chips) and said he was full. Great French accent. (Celine should know) Moules frites is very Belgium and northern French." So now you know. Anyway, here's the set list:

Amneville November 8th 2003

01 The Loneliest Guy
02 Days
03 New Killer Star
04 Rebel Rebel
05 Cactus
06 Afraid
07 Reality
08 White Light, White Heat
09 China Girl
10 The Man Who Sold The World
11 Hallo Spaceboy
12 Sunday
13 Under Pressure
14 Ashes To Ashes
15 The Motel
16 Loving The Alien
17 Fashion
18 breaking Glass
19 I'm Afraid Of Americans
20 "Heroes"
21 Heathen (The Rays)

(Encore)
22 Five Years
23 Hang On To Yourself
24 Suffragette City
25 Ziggy Stardust

The tour continues in Nice on Monday.

Virtual Ticket Is Live

The Virtual Ticket's in my hand...

The Virtual Ticket section on BowieNet that we told you about a little while back is now live. Eventually we intend to load the thing up with all things concerned with David Bowie's A Reality Tour. It's in an embryonic stage right now and I've just loaded the nineteen set lists of the shows so far performed, from Copenhagen to Lille.

We'll gradually fill it with all the other associated stuff, such as reviews, photos and more of Ant and Jake's exclusive footage... their first three contributions are also live on Virtual Ticket. Please bear with us as this thing grows into a permanent record of David Bowie's A Reality Tour all under one umbrella.

I will announce any major updates in the news as we make them, but in the meantime, click on the image above to have a browse through what is there right now.

Lille Set List Details

Three DBs in Lille tonight. Pictures by Philippe Auliac, montage by Blammo.

So you train by shadow boxing...

David Bowie kicked of a string of six French shows tonight with the latest A Reality Tour show at Le Zenith in Lille.

By all accounts he was in usual playful mood, enjoying a couple of boxing sparing sessions with Gail after Ashes To Ashes, including a display of his impressive 'Popeye' windmill punch that is enough to scare any potential attacker away.

As is his want, he also showed off his perfect command of French by talking about eating muscles in Brussels... or some weird Bowie type shit like that.

Anyway, here's the twenty four-song set list:

Lille November 7th 2003

01 Rebel Rebel
02 New Killer Star
03 Fame
04 Cactus
05 Afraid
06 Reality
07 China Girl
08 The Man Who Sold The World
09 Hallo Spaceboy
10 Sunday
11 Under Pressure
12 Ashes To Ashes
13 The Motel
14 Loving The Alien
15 Changes
16 Fashion
17 Sister Midnight
18 I'm Afraid Of Americans
19 "Heroes"
20 Heathen (The Rays)

(Encore)
21 Five Years
22 Hang On To Yourself
23 Suffragette City
24 Ziggy Stardust

Thanx a million to Philippe Auliac for the great shots from tonight's show. The tour continues in Amneville tomorrow.

Belgium Set List Details

DB in Belgium...OK, so it wasn't tonight, but I did shoot it in Belgium, honest!

Tonight my hero was singing for you...

The Sportpaleis Antwerpen in Antwerp, Belgium was the venue for the 18th show of David Bowie's A Reality Tour. I have heard reports that David tried to inject a little more extra excitement into the notoriously wild Belgian audience, which he successfully did, eventually concluding "All's well that ends well", or something like that.

As with Berlin, Belgium was lucky enough to hear Five Years... again as part of an encore which climaxed with four songs from Ziggy Stardust... Let me know if you think David and the band should rehearse the remaining seven songs before the tour hits the UK! };-)

Here's the twenty six-song set list:

Antwerp November 5th 2003

01 Rebel Rebel
02 New Killer Star
03 Fame
04 Cactus
05 Afraid
06 Reality
07 China Girl

Never Get Old 2-track Promo Winners

He looks me in the eye and he says he?s got his mind on a countdown 3-2-1...

Sorry for the delay in announcing the winners for this one. I'm going to cut to the chase and give you the answers and the names of the winners straight away. If you need to see the original questions, check out these three news items: 10/12/03 NEWS: WIN NEVER GET OLD 2-TRACK PROMO CD SINGLE, 10/19/03 NEWS: WIN NEVER GET OLD 2-TRACK PROMO - PART TWO, 10/26/03 NEWS: LAST CHANCE TO WIN NEVER GET OLD 2-TRACK PROMO

Here are the answers for each of the three parts of the contest:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NGO Part 1:

GOLDEN VOTER is not an anagram of Never Get Old.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NGO Part 2:

"By the dawn's early light" - from Jacques Brel's Amsterdam"By the dawn's early light" - from She'll Drive The Big Car"The dawn's early light" - from Looking For Water

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NGO Part 3:

Never Get Old had been performed eleven times on David Bowie's A Reality Tour. Except for Paris on 21st October, the song was played at every show since Copenhagen, up to, and including, Stuttgart.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was a very popular competition, even before the news that there wouldn't now be a physical UK single. The good news is that I have now managed to get fifteen copies of this ultra-rare promo CD, as opposed to the original ten we first offered. Anyway, here, (in alphabetical order) is the randomly drawn list of fifteen BowieNetters who answered all three questions correctly:

Berlin Treated To 33-song Bowie Show Tonight

"Again there Bowie is!".... according to Babel Fish at least.
DB meets his public in Berlin back in September.

Well, it's been so long, so long, so long...

Well, I did say in yesterday's news that Berlin is a city that always seems to draw a great performance out of David... and it seems that tonight's show was no exception. Talk to any of the BowieNetters that attended David's Heathen show in Berlin last year and I think you'll find that the great majority of them agree that it was one of, if not the, best shows of the whole tour.

By all accounts David was ready for business the moment he stepped on to the stage of the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, complete with a pair of fingerless leather gloves.

There were two songs played for the first on the A Reality Tour tonight... Both A New Career In A New Town and Five Years were saved for the encore of what was the longest show of the tour so far. Here's that very impressive 33-song set list:

Berlin November 3rd 2003

01 Rebel Rebel
02 New Killer Star
03 Reality
04 Fame
05 Cactus
06 Afraid
07 China Girl
08 The Man Who Sold The World
09 Fall Dog Bombs The Moon
10 Hallo Spaceboy
11 Sunday
12 Under Pressure
13 Ashes To Ashes
14 The Motel
15 Loving The Alien
16 She'll Drive The Big Car
17 The Loneliest Guy
18 All The Young Dudes
19 Changes
20 Slip Away
21 Battle For Britain (The Letter)
22 I'm Afraid Of Americans
23 "Heroes"
24 Heathen (The Rays)

(Encore)
25 A New Career In A New Town
26 Bring Me The Disco King
27 Sound And Vision
28 Be My Wife
29 Fantastic Voyage
30 Five Years
31 Hang On To Yourself
32 Suffragette City
33 Ziggy Stardust

The tour continues on Wednesday with a show at the Sportpaleis Antwerpen in Antwerp, Belgium.

Extra Vegas Date Added

Oz Pre-sale Update

You'd let me know (if the time changed at all)...

We have delayed the pre-sale by a couple of hours for the first lot of dates on the Australian leg of David Bowie's 2003/2004 A Reality Tour that we told you about last week. The pre-sale will begin with four dates being made available to BowieNetters on Tuesday November 4th at 3:00pm EST New York time, as opposed to the previous time of 1:00pm.

I believe this now makes the time a little more reasonable for most of our Australian BowieNet friends. In case you missed the original story, this pre-sale is for the dates listed below which can also be found in the Reality Tour Calendar:

Brisbane - Tues 17 February - Brisbane Entertainment Centre (TICKETEK)
Sydney - Friday 20 February - Sydney Entertainment Centre (TICKETMASTER7)
Adelaide - Monday 23 February - Adelaide Entertainment Centre (BASS TICKETING)
Melbourne - Thursday 26 February - Rod Laver Arena (TICKETEK)

You can purchase your tickets by going here at the aforementioned time tomorrow.
