Some of today's press here in the UK have picked up on a story we first told you about last August. (08/18/02 SNIPPET: DREW BARRYMORE GETS THE ALADDIN SANE TREATMENT) Timed perfectly for next month's 30th anniversary of the release of Aladdin Sane, promotional shots from the new Charlie's Angels film, Full Throttle, have begun to circulate, and the picture of Drew Barrymore in an approximation of Mr Sane's clobber seems to have caught the imagination of picture editors the world over.

In this particular shot, Drew, who plays Dylan Sanders in the film, takes on the guise of a female wrestler. I think it's fair to say though, that most of the female wrestlers on our own message boards would prefer a tussle with the original Aladdin Sane, with an immediate submission being granted to the God of Glam! };-)

The soundtrack CD for Full Throttle, (scheduled for a late June release) will contain a re-recorded version of Rebel Rebel, similar to the version that David performed live last year.

Exclusive Db Track For War Child Album

Don't stay in a sad place, Where they don't care how you are...

David Bowie has donated an exclusive track to the War Child charity album, Hope. Due next month, the full line up for the release has not yet been confirmed, but we can exclusively reveal that the Bowie track will be the Metro remix radio edit of Everyone Says 'Hi'.

This version has only ever been released on the impossibly rare 12" promo that we told you about last month (02/01/03 NEWS: BOWIE ENTERS TOP 50 IN BILLBOARD DANCE/CLUB CHART) a copy of which recently sold on ebaY for $177! This is the first time on CD for the recording.

Executive producer of the project is Brian Eno and Tracey Emin will be providing artwork for the album. Reports circulating that an acoustic version of Loving The Alien is the Bowie contribution are obviously untrue. Remember, it ain't the truth 'till you read it here! };-)

News of the album was first broken by the UK's Daily Mirror, from where I have borrowed this quote from War Child's Norman Sheehan:

Speaking from the Iraqi border, War Child chief executive Norman Sheehan said he feared the worst.

This quote is made all the more poignant with today's report form Reuters regarding civilian deaths in Baghdad, after an air raid which devastated a busy residential and commercial street.

Dot Music's First 'on Demand' Classic Artist Feature

You're always first on the line...

Top of the list yesterday at Dot Music News was the launch of their exclusive and very first, multimedia 'on demand' classic artist feature. They say:

Aphex Twin Remix Of ''heroes'' Reissued

We can be Heroes, for ever and ever...

Released in the US today (yesterday elsewhere) is the double CD Aphex Twin: 26 Mixes for Cash. This finally makes available, at a reasonable price, the Aphex Twin Remix of "Heroes". The track originally had a limited release in 1997 as a free 3" CD with Japanese pressings of the "Heroes" Symphony by Philip Glass. (See above)

Personally I love this version, I honestly think it's a beautiful re-working which marries together the original Bowie vocal with the Glass orchestral version, and then gets shoved in to the Aphex Twin blender by Richard D James. But then again, I also love the unreleased second Beck mix of Seven, which isn't exactly chart fodder... and, I have to admit, when I listen to either of these mixes at home, my wife looks at me as if I finally lost the last marble. I digress...

Judging by the couple of reviews I have seen, It seems that "Heroes" is one of the more popular tracks on this CD for people other than myself. Amazon have a 30-second snatch of the track if you want to get a flavour, though it really doesn't do it justice. This is from their review of the album:

Improbable yet inspired highlights come in the form of his haunting interpretation of David Bowie's "Heroes" symphony conducted by Philip Glass...

... and this from The Times:

Does James have the talent to carry off his attitude? On this evidence, the answer is a resounding ?yes and no?. Yes, when he gets his programming teeth into a track he really likes (as with his remix of Bowie?s Heroes); no, when he?s dirtying his hands on Jesus Jones or Curve.

Well, I guess we can't blame James for everything, as my mother used to say: "You can't polish a turd, son!" Having said that, there are some great things on this album apart from the Bowie remix, and it is worth a trawl through. I feel duty-bound to point out that a track on the CD called Ziggy (by Nav Katze) has no bearing on the David Bowie song of similar name, but then again, that's before Richard D James got his hands on it, so who knows? };-)

As I post this item, the results of BowieNetter Angelnr12's poll seem to echo this sentiment. The "Competition" option has outnumbered the "Just pick a name outta the hat!" option by two to one... but having said that, it's pretty much neck and neck with the "David Bowie is gorgeous" option! };-)

Ziggy Stardust Motion Picture Competition

Just turn on with me and you're not alone...

Nobody can have escaped the massive amount of press coverage for the Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars - The Motion Picture, 30th anniversary special edition DVD and double CD and vinyl soundtrack, due on Monday. (Tuesday 25th in the US)

Pretty well all of the music monthlies have carried full-page ads outlining the different formats, and indeed, UNCUT magazine has two different full-page ads. The release (both sound and vision) has received lots of great reviews, below are a handful of excerpts:

It's a point-and-shoot record of a now-legendary night...Bowie's sense of melodrama is palpable.

A nation of screaming teens prepared to wear goofy gear and go potty for something as weird as Bowie in 1973 is something we may never see again. A moment worth treasuring.

Gad Live Broadcast On Saturday And More

I will be doing two very obscure but important songs from Joni's back catalog.

The concert is FREE, so if you happen to be in the neighborhood, do stop in. The event starts at 11:00 AM and finishes at 11:00 PM. That's right! A genuine marathon! Latest Db Songs On Nme's 'burn It'

No-one can burn like me...

Hot Hot Heat are the latest band to feature a David Bowie song on their ultimate compilation CD for this week's NME Burn It feature.

Steve Bays chooses Five Years.

One or two songs on a mix tape have to be anthemic. It's like the theme from a great coming of age movie. The arrangements are epic and a bit different to most pop songs.

Last week's Burn It, from 'punk-pop's blonde bombshell' Harry also included one of David's songs. This time it was Cracked Actor.

I love the lyrics - "Crack baby crack... smack baby smack... suck baby suck'. I love that Bowie period, it's really hard to choose a track but it's the one I've been listening to this week.

These two add to a long and still growing line of bands and artists who have all selected a Bowie song for 'Burn It'. As is only fitting for the person NME chose as Most Influential Artist Of All Time. You can check out more 'Bowie' Burn It selections in these earlier BowieNet News items.

Princess Superstar on Station to Station. (02/27/02 NEWS: PRINCESS PICKS BOWIE FOR NME)

I love this track and 'TVC15' - in fact the whole 'Station To Station' album is so crazy and funky and conceptual. The track is long - you can put on your make-up and be done by the end of the song. It's from his real, mid-'70s cocaine period.

Changes Afoot On The Bbc Tonight

The very first RCA music press advertisement for a Bowie single. This particular one
appeared in Melody Maker in January 1972, and RCA generously shared the ad for
Changes with an ad for the theme from the hit TV Series A Family At War! However,
despite RCA splashing out, and Tony Blackburn making the record 'Single Of The Week'
on Radio1 (a big deal back then) the song failed to chart. The next 45 was a different story.

Changes are taking the pace I'm going thru...

Tonight's TOTP2 on the BBC here in the UK (BBC2 6.20pm) is showing an archive performance of David Bowie's song Changes. On their listings page, TOTP2 have illustrated a blurb about the song with a 1974 live shot. Here's an excerpt from that blurb:

"It started out as a parody of a nightclub song, a kind of throwaway," said a humble Mr Bowie of 'Changes' - which by some criminal twist of fate, never made the Top 40 despite constant appearances on Bowie's many compilations.

Anyway, the picture they used got me to thinking that perhaps they were going to show Changes from David's September 5th 1974 concert at the Los Angeles Universal Amphitheatre, a show that was filmed by the BBC for their Cracked Actor documentary.

But, a little more detective work has uncovered the fact that the version being shown tonight is in fact from the Ziggy Stardust Motion Picture. Oh well, not quite as exclusive as the '74 show perhaps, but it's still Bowie on the box, and a good ad for the DVD.

While we're on the subject of Changes, the April edition of MOJO magazine has a free booklet entitled Ultimate Jukebox - The 100 Singles You Must Own. It's another one of these hotly debated (and frankly pointless) lists that emerge every other month and get music fans across the globe riled.

At number 30 in the list, Changes is the Bowie single you must own, and whatever you may feel about this selection, this is what the publication had to say about the release:

He'd had three UK flop singles Space Oddity, and this fared little better in the charts. His debut single on RCA - and the opening track on the Hunky Dory LP - represented a sea change for both Bowie and pop music.

A charged accusatory lyric, a colourful volley of piano and sax and then you're into that irresistible chorus. Guaranteed to stop any pub dead in its tracks, the ch-ch-changes stutter is a real masterstroke.

The B-side, Andy Warhol, reflected Bowie's fascination with the avant garde and enhanced his sense of mystery and danger all the more.

So there you have it. What would you have chosen if you could only own one Bowie single? After much deliberation I've finally settled on Space Oddity/The Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud. No hang on, what about Life On Mars?/The Man Who Sold The World... or "Heroes"/V-2 Schneider? Oh, I give up! };-)

Bowienet/ebay Auctions Are Go Again

We are tremendously pleased to announce the return of the BowieNet/ebaY auctions, and we're kicking off this new round with our most incredible item yet. We first mentioned this a few weeks ago, (02/22/03 NEWS: BOWIENET/EBAY AUCTIONS TO RESUME SHORTLY) but due to the possibility of a win by an overseas bidder, it has had to spend a little time in quarantine*.

Yes, you guessed it, we're auctioning off the chap in the picture above (only the one on the left mind), well one of his chums at least. The mannequin we are offering is one of the original props used by David Bowie on his Outside tour of 1995/1996.

If you were present at any of the shows, you would have seen these "boys" (I hesitate to sex them actually, as they seem to be of non-specific gender...in a Ken kind of way) hanging from ceilings, hiding under canvas and generally just standing around looking a bit menacing. They added a sinister air to the stage scenery, and helped flavour the whole art crime vibe of the tour.

This is the actual mannequin that we are auctioning.

The mannequins were produced in different poses, but as you can see from the picture above, this particular one is standing erect in his stockinged feet, (not that it comes with stockings of course) and towers to a magnificent 5' 8" (approx.)

This boy is fit, and weighs in at approx. 90 pounds, 45 per half, and indeed will be shipped to the winner in two halves, via UPS. Shipping charges will be in addition to the auction price and based on the buyer?s address.

Aladdin Sane 30th Anniversary Edition Due In May

Who'll love Aladdin Sane...

Many BowieNet members (including myself) have received an e-mail from a UK online record store regarding the Aladdin Sane double disc reissue, that we first told you about at the beginning of last month. As is often the case with these things, the information contained within the mail-out was not 100 per cent accurate.

The reissue follows the same format as last year's Ziggy Stardust 30th anniversary edition, two discs in the same sort of packaging, including extensive liner notes and rare photographs. The first disc is obviously the same tracklisting as the original vinyl issue, which, for those of you that don't already know, went something like this:

Db Guests On New Earl Slick Album

Constantly, fervently, firmly, Revolutionary...

David Bowie has co-written a brand new track for Earl Slick's soon-to-be-released album, which has a working title of Newfs*. The song is called Isn't It Evening/The Revolutionary and the good news is that David has provided the vocals on this recording.

The Mark Plati produced album features other Bowie cohorts such as Sterling Campbell on a couple of tracks, and Mike Garson on another. Obviously Mr Plati, apart from producing, has some considerable musical input too.

Other guest vocalists include: Royston Langdon of Spacehog, Summer Rose, formerly of The Snapdragons and Martha Davis of The Motels. Singer Robert Smith also makes an appearance on a reworking of The Cure's classic, A Forest.

The album is due on Sanctuary records, and we'll give you more info as we get it.

Mtv's '22 Greatest: Voices' - Premiere Tomorrow

BowieNetter Piccadilly and 'David Bowie' face the limelight at MTV's studios last month.

The show we told you about back in January (01/23/03 NEWS: VOTE FOR DAVID IN MTV'S '22 GREATEST: VOICES' POLL and 01/26/03 NEWS: MTV NEED BOWIE SUPERFAN IN NEW YORK CITY NOW!), has it's premiere tomorrow on MTV2 (USA) at 2.00PM.

MTV are playing the content of the show very close to their chests, so all we can tell you at the moment is that BowieNetter Piccadilly (aka Carla Rhodes), and BowieNetter Lruiz (aka Luis) were interviewed for the programme.

"I'll tell 'em how great you are!" - "Gottle o geer.."

Db Chosen As 'man Of The Week'

Who could ask for more...

AskMen.com, the 24 hour a day portal for men, recently chose David as the subject of their 'Man Of The Week' column.

BowieNetter Regina posted a link on our message boards yesterday, and Ask Men's comments have already generated some discussion. Whether you agree with their summation or not, you can enjoy reading what they have to say about his 'personality & talent', 'woman magnetism' and 'coolness factor' among other topics. Here's just one quote:

Bowie has been an influence for at least two generations of creative types. His musical and visual innovations have placed him in the vanguard of versatile rock performers, and he continues to evolve, like a human work in progress.

They also noticed "his perfect hair".

View Classic Bowie Yahoo! Performance Once More

Back in July 2000, this very site was awarded Best Artist Site of the year at the Yahoo! Internet Music Awards. David accepted the award on behalf of BowieNet from Sandra Bernhard at a ceremony at Studio 54 in New York. He also accepted the gong for 2000 Online Pioneer Honoree, which was presented by Public Enemy's Chuck D.

David gave amusing acceptance speeches for each award, but the highlight of the evening was his live performances of two Bowie classics. Along with Mike Garson on keyboards, he performed breathtaking versions of both Wild Is The Wind and Life On Mars?.

At the time, the awards ceremony was cybercast live on VH1.com. But now, courtesy of BowieNet, you can relive the moment by seeing those incredible performances once again... and most likely, again and again and again...
