I Knew That It Would Happen Someday

According to a report on 'Billboard's Daily Music News' site, popular singing sensation Steven Patrick Morrissey, 40, (currently crowd-pleasing across the United States) closed his show at the Beacon Theatre (in New York City) last night, with the 1973 David Bowie classic, 'Drive-In Saturday'. The report states that: "...despite Morrissey's request for the audience to count how many mistakes the band would make while playing it..." the world's most famous vegetarian performed a version of the song that was: "...surprisingly well done..." Doors Open For Labyrinth Dvd

The Sunday Times 'Doors' (your entrance to the future)section has a review of 'LABYRINTH' on DVD this week.

"Jim Henson's film LABYRINTH is remembered as much forDAVID BOWIE's unfeasibly tight trousers as for itsamazing special effects (it was produced by GeorgeLucas of Star Wars fame).

First released in 1986, it has stood the test of time. The magical world created by Henson and inhabited byhis monsters still makes an appealingfairy tale 14 years on. The film follows a younggirl, Sarah, (Jennifer Connelly), hunting for her babybrother who has been kidnapped by the evil Goblin King(BOWIE).

BOWIE's soundtrack is superb, and the lifelikemonsters give the DVD an added dimension, making thefantasy world believable.

BOWIE fans will enjoy the 'making of' documentary, trailers and interviews."

Raw Rock

Raw Power
Photographs By
Mick Rock

1972 was the year. During this time, Iggy & the Stooges - at the height of their musical powers and legendary excesses - recorded the now-seminal album 'Raw Power' and performed their only UK gig at London's 'The Scala'.

It was a crazed period captured on camera by one man: Mick Rock.

"Iggy Pop is, you might say, extreme. He makes the Mick Jaggers and Alice Coopers of this world look kind of timid. Words such as 'spontaneous' and 'unpredictable', frequently applied to him, are a little short on power. Iggy is a monster." - Mick Rock, 1972

Now, to be released this Spring, a deluxe edition book of 200 black and white images, including 47 striking color shots, documenting Iggy and his remarkable band at their finest. Most of these images have never been published before. The book also contains an interview of Iggy by Mick himself, and an introduction by Mick as well.

The book will be published May 2nd, 2000 in the UK, and June 2nd, 2000 in the USA.

There will be a full-scale exhibition and launch party to be held at the original venue: The Scala, on May 2nd.

Q Stage

British music mag Q have another article this month that features Bowie. 'Stage' is listed among their 'Best Drumming Albums of All Time', and this is what they said about drummer Dennis Davis during the recording of 'Station To Station' in 1975:

"...it was his first as keystone of the rhythm section (with Carlos Alomar and George Murray) that lasted for five studio albums and this one - the contentiously mixed document of 1978's Stage tour, recorded in Philadelphia. Davis really lets his hair down throughout, barrelling round his kit, testing every cymbal in the shop and embellishing favourites such as a snail's-pace Ziggy Stardust and Station To Station with some flamboyant but fluid showmanship."

Blam's Little Spot

As promised in David's journal last week, Blam's Little Spot became available for public viewing yesterday. The first item up for the Blammo treatment is the legendary The Man Who Sold The World dress cover.

Total Blam Blam would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their offers of marriage this leap year, February 29th, but feels duty bound to point out that he is in fact already married. He would also like to point out that Rednik is a married man too, and while Blammo is flattered by Rednik's offer, he feels that Red, in his responsible position of webmaster, really should know better.

NB: For the confused among you, it is traditional in the UK for ladies to propose to men on the 29th of February.

Andy Warhol Anniversary

Feb 28th 1987, 13 years since Andy Warhol ('looks ascream, hang him on my wall' (Hunky Dory : 1971))became the LATE great......

NME.com have a piece about him this week in their "Rock news from past NME's" section.

"Warhol, pop artist extraordinaire, delivered to theworld not only the Campbell's soup can as art but alsoThe Velvet Underground."

"From the 1960's onward, working out of his NewYork-based studio The Factory, Warhol often seemeddeliberately to be cultivating his own stardom."

"As Quentin Crisp said, 'All of us who make a styleout of being owe it all to Andy Warhol.'"

"In the future", Warhol said, "everyone will befamous for 15 minutes."

That sounds quite a lot like the internet to me. Canyou imagine his Home Page??....sigh

No-one I found does him justice, but you can try theselinks:-

Theeeeee Winnah Is....

The winner is.... BowieNet!

In the annual readers poll of German music magazine Musikexpress (Marchissue) readers voted www.davidbowie.com as the #1 website of the past year!

A landslide victory for our little wonderwolrd of a site: it got 8,6 % ofall the votes, almost twice as much as the runners up rollingstones.com andbeastieboys.com.

But that's not all. German music freaks obviously love our DB nor justinteractively but also very actively: They consider him #2 solo artist ofthe year! Beaten to the top only by Beck (at least that's good company) with10% of all the votes David again got almost twice as many as "#3 soloartistof the year", Tom Waits, who got 5,4 %. David also charted in the"personality of the year" category at #9 amongst politicians, authors andsportsmen and a few musicians like Paul McCartney and Bono. (Sadly themisogynist attitudes David mentioned in his diaries recently are alsoreflected here: only one woman, tennis ace Steffi Graf, made it to the TopTen of that category.)

Also a great performance for "hours...": #3 album of the year! And the clipfor "Thursday's Child" was voted 6th best video of the year.

And even more chart sucess for DB in that issue of Musikexpress: In themonthly album charts voted for by readers "hours.." jumped up 3 places, nowranking at #5. And guest critic Robert Smith puts "Ziggy Stardust and theSpiders from Mars" at #5 in the list of his ten favourite albums of alltime.

Here are the full rankings of the relevant categories of the readers poll:

WEBSITE OF THE YEAR:
www.davidbowie.com 8,6%
www.rollingstones.com 4,7%
www.beastieboys.com 4,3%
www.mp3.com 3,9%
www.cdnow.com 3,4 %

SOLO ARTIST OF THE YEAR:
1. Beck 17,9%
2. David Bowie 10.0%
3. Tom Waits 5,4%
4. Robbie Williams 5,2%
5. Moby 3,8%

ALBUM OF THE YEAR:
1. Blur "13" 6,6%
2. Red Hot Chili Peppers "Californication" 4,8%
3. David Bowie "hours.." 4,4%
4. Travis "The Man Who" 4,2%
5. Beck "Midnight Vultures" 4,1 %

VIDEO OF THE YEAR:
1. "Coffee & TV" (Blur) 7,6%
2. "Turn the Page" (Metallica) 5,8%
3. "Beautiful Stranger" (Madonna) 5,6%
4. "Freak on a Leash" (Korn) 5,1%
