    From David Himself:

"Because of the Gisborne Festival fold-up, plans for a small Winter tour have been abandoned. Our friend, Chris Haskett, was ear-marked only for the cancelled tour. There will be NO promo-tour, there never was one planned.I have undertaken to do only a handful of radio and TV appearances.

PAGE HAMILTON, ex-Helmet founder member, will stand in on lead guitar for Reeves Gabrels on these shows. Reeves will finish off two projects that have impending deadlines in Oct." - db

Bowie In The News

An interesting article entitled "David Bowie Returns With More Mature Offering" can be found at CDNow's Allstar daily news site.

The article touches on writing rock and roll for mature audiences and Bowie's songwriting process.

    There is an excerpt:

"Actually, I think for the first time for a long time I'd actually taken the trouble to write the songs before we went into the studio," says Bowie. "So I spent a lot of time virtually crafting them in a very reactionary, old fashioned traditional way; just wrote proper songs, applied myself to them and the lyric, and kept them extremely simple.

I didn't want them to become decorative in any manner. So when I went into the studio, I had positive ideas of how the songs were to sound which really is quite unusual, especially for the 90s. It's the last thing I've done really in the 90s. Just about everything has been done in the studio in more of an experimental fashion much like the middle to late 70s. I guess the last time I wrote songs per se was really the early 80s."

    Here is the full article.

Bowie On Peel

Last night, to celebrate John Peel's 60th birthday, the BBC aired an hour long documentary special. Included in the special was a videotaped appearance by none other than David Bowie, wishing Peel a happy birthday, and telling a story about how John Peel once helped steer Bowie in the right direction. Here is a except:

"Dear John. When you worked with me on the T-Rex tour, and I was doing a mime piece based on the invasion of Tibet by the Chinese... you were somewhat non-plussed that the audience didn't like the piece where the back row of the audience lifted their hands up with Chairman Mao's little red book, and there was a whole feud going on between me and the audience.

You decided that the problem was that I was doing mime. You didn't like mime. And until I came here to America, I never realized that you were right. Nobody in the world likes mime. Thanks for the advice about the songs. I'm glad I stayed with the songwriting. And a very happy birthday."

Viewers of the special were then treated to a rare version of David's 1972 appearence on The Old Grey Whistle Test. The clip was Oh! You Pretty Things.
