David Bowie Estate & Warner Music Announce Landmark, Career-Spanning Partnership

Global Deal Sets WMG as Definitive Home for Icon’s Body of Work

New Pact Encompasses Five Decades of Bowie Music

Warner Music Group (WMG) and the estate of David Bowie have signed a global, career-spanning partnership for Bowie’s timeless recorded music catalog. With this landmark new deal, Warner Music will now have worldwide rights to five decades of Bowie’s transcendent, culture-shifting work. Expanding on Warner Music’s current agreement with the estate, which encompasses Bowie material from 1968 to 1999, the new licensing agreement will include the entirety of Bowie's 2000-2016 creative outpouring. Heathen, Reality, The Next Day, and the worldwide No.1 album ★ (pronounced Blackstar) are among the acclaimed works that will come into the Warner Music fold in 2023.

Much of Bowie’s catalog became part of the Warner Music family in 2013, when WMG acquired the historic London-based Parlophone Label Group. Since then, Warner Music and the Bowie estate have jointly embarked on an extensive, award-winning program of releases highlighting the astonishing, game-changing evolution of his career. This includes Five Years, which won the NME Award for Best Reissue in 2016; Conversation Piece, which earned the 2021 Making Vinyl Packaging Award for Best Book + Media Package; and the lauded Glastonbury 2000 live audio & video set (2018).

Prominent among the flow of recent Bowie releases has been the acclaimed Era series of box sets, each one covering a key period in Bowie’s career. Launched in 2015, there have been four Era sets released to date. The fifth Era box, Brilliant Adventure (1992 – 2001), is slated for release this fall, with details to come. Guided by Bowie’s vision for his catalog, Nigel Reeve – Warner Music’s SVP, Content Development & Marketing, Global Catalog, has worked in close partnership with the Bowie estate to curate and present a landmark release campaign celebrating Bowie’s unparalleled legacy, with many more exciting releases on tap.

Max Lousada, CEO, Recorded Music, Warner Music Group said: “It’s an incredible honor to have been chosen as the stewards of one of the most important and dynamic bodies of creative work in modern culture. The impact of Bowie’s repeated reinvention and endless experimentation continues to resonate around the world – through the genres he transformed, the timeless songs and sounds he invented, and the immeasurable influence he’s had on music, art, and fashion. We’re excited that our expanded partnership with the Bowie estate will help us deliver innovative, career-spanning projects and attract new generations to his extraordinary musical universe.”

Kevin Gore, President, Global Catalog, Warner Recorded Music added: “To be entrusted with this phenomenal body of work is truly gratifying. For the past eight years, we’ve enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the Bowie estate, collaborating on a fantastic series of releases. Nigel and our entire catalog team have taken great care to be thoughtful and steadfast in our promise to stay true to his artistic vision, while revealing previously unheard music and framing his genius in fresh contexts. With the addition of his immensely powerful later work to the Warner Music portfolio, we’re looking forward to bringing Bowie’s music to fans across the globe for many years to come.”

David Bowie

David Bowie was born in 1947. Between the late-'60s and the mid-‘70s, he experimented with multi-media, recording the albums The Man Who Sold The World, Space Oddity, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Station to Station, and Young Americans. The track “Fame,” taken from the latter album, was his first U.S. No 1.

In 1976, he relocated to Berlin, recording Low and Heroes with Eno and Tony Visconti. In 1980, he made his Broadway debut in The Elephant Man and released the Visconti co-production, Scary Monsters and Super Creeps, followed in 1983 by the Nile Rodgers-produced Let’s Dance. Between the mid-‘80s and early ‘90s, he worked with his band Tin Machine, collaborated with the dance company La La La Human Steps, and wrote music for Hanif Kureishi's Buddha Of Suburbia.

1992 brought one of rock’s first CD-ROMs, Bowie’s Jump. In 1994, reunited once again with Eno, he produced the experimental Outside album, followed by Earthling in 1997 and hours… in 1999, the year he became a Commandeur dans L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

Bowie’s next project was a further recorded collaboration with Tony Visconti, 2002’s Heathen. The accompanying live dates in Europe and America saw full performances of both Heathen and 1977’s classic Low. A year later, the Reality album was launched with the world’s largest interactive “live by satellite” event, followed by the rapturously received and critically acclaimed “A Reality Tour” of the world.

2006 saw Bowie return to acting, with the Chris Nolan-directed The Prestige (#1 at the box office) adding to such cinematic highlights as Nic Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth, Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ, Tony Scott’s The Hunger, and Nagisa Oshima’s Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. In May 2007, Bowie was the inaugural curator of the highly successful 10-day “High Line” arts and music festival in New York. That June, he was honored at the 11th Annual Webby Awards (known as the “Oscars of the Internet”) with the Webby Lifetime Achievement Award for pushing the boundaries between art and technology.

Later in 2007, Bowie starred as himself in an acclaimed episode of Extras, Ricky Gervais’ series on HBO. 2012 saw the erection of a plaque in Heddon Street, London (the scene of the Ziggy Stardust cover shoot) to commemorate the extraordinary influence of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and, of course, David himself.

Further excitement accompanied the 2012 announcement that the David Bowie Archive had given unprecedented access to the prestigious Victoria and Albert Museum for an exhibition to be curated solely by the V&A in London. It was the first time a museum had been given access to the David Bowie Archive. The exhibition went on to break records in the U.S., Berlin, and France.

On January 8, 2013, quite without fanfare and out of the blue, David Bowie released a new single entitled “Where Are We Now?” and announced the release of a new album. The Next Day was Bowie's first new studio album in 10 years. Critically lauded across the world, it features songs that are now widely seen as amongst his best.

In 2014, to celebrate his 50th year in music, the compilation Nothing Has Changed was released, and yet again Bowie surprised everyone by releasing the seven-minute jazz murder ballad “Sue (or In a Season of Crime),” a collaboration with the Maria Schneider Orchestra. Bowie ended 2014 by revealing “Tis A Pity She Was a Whore,” an uncompromising piece that pointed to a possible future of even further experimentation.

Spring 2015 brought the announcement of the off-Broadway theatre production, Lazarus, a collaboration between Bowie and renowned playwright Enda Walsh. Directed by Ivo Van Hove, Lazarus also played in London at the King's Cross Theatre to rave reviews.

★ (pronounced Blackstar) was Bowie's 28th studio album, released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. Co-produced by Bowie and Visconti, and featuring backing from local NYC jazz saxophonist Donny McCaslin and his quartet, ★ was released to overwhelming acclaim, garnering many of the best critical notices of Bowie’s entire career. ★ was the first David Bowie album to hit No. 1 in the U.S., topped the charts in more than 20 countries, and won five Grammy Awards.

On January 10, 2016, David Bowie died peacefully surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer. His body of work, multi-generational influence, and legacy of fearless innovation and endless reinvention will live on forever.

Bowie celebrated with limited edition Stylophone

stylophone_launch_graphic_1080sq.jpg

“And I think my spaceship knows which way to go”

David Bowie’s career-long association with the world’s first ‘pocket synthesizer’ is being celebrated with the launch of a Bowie Stylophone.

The limited-edition Stylophone commemorates Bowie’s-longstanding association with the iconic instrument, which famously featured on his breakthrough 1969 single “Space Oddity” which was composed around the Stylophone’s unique sound.

The launch is the result of a collaboration between The David Bowie Archive and Dubreq, the British company that makes the instrument. Together they have released a selection of pictures of the music legend using the Stylophone. Whilst legendary American record producer Tony Visconti, who worked closely with Bowie over many years, has gifted the team a Bowie photo from his private collection.

“Space Oddity” appeared on Bowie’s second album which was produced by Tony Visconti – who recalls how the young Bowie was ecstatic to be chosen by the makers of the Stylophone to receive a complimentary unit.

Mr Visconti said: “He was one of the first to own one and to discover this new, quite radical way of making music. He immediately put it to work and wrote a song around the unique sound of the instrument, which was of course, Space Oddity.

“For many years to come Bowie and Stylophone were names that were matched in the same breath. He would be very proud of this new incarnation named after him.“

Regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Bowie continued to use the instrument throughout his career. Even as recently as 2002 he recorded with the Stylophone for the song “Slip Away” on his Heathen album.

The limited-edition Stylophone goes on sale HERE on 16th September and is accompanied by a commemorative booklet that explores Bowie’s music.

John Simpson, managing director of Dubreq, the British company that makes Stylophone said: “There’s a big resurgence in interest in the mini synthesizer from young musicians. This limited edition Stylophone is a great way to commemorate David’s affection for the instrument and to inspire the next generation of musicians to create even more great music with the Stylophone.”

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of John Hutchinson who passed in hospital yesterday after a long illness.

In his web page bio, John was described as “a semi-retired and little-known jazz guitarist – he is also a veteran of three important David Bowie bands for seven years between 1966 and 1973.“

twoac_dancing_mont_1080sq.jpg

“You like me and I like it all...”

With today’s digital audio release of I’M ONLY DANCING (THE SOUL TOUR 74) and with The Width Of A Circle (TWOAC) 2CD set currently * at #15 in the UK album chart, not to mention the TWOAC 4-track 10" vinyl at #1 in the UK vinyl singles chart (albeit listed as The Prettiest Star), we got to wondering if there’s a format that Bowie fans prefer?

Either way, thanks for continuing to make all the formats a success, it’s very much appreciated.

Here’s the purchase link for TWOAC if you still need it.

* By the time you read this, those positions will no longer be relevant as the new charts are imminent.

FOOTNOTE: The images in today’s montage aren’t necessarily to scale as nobody knows how big digital is.

THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD ALBUM PICTURE DISC

RELEASED 28th MAY ON PARLOPHONE

Last week saw the 50th anniversary of the original UK release of The Man Who Sold The World, David Bowie’s landmark entry into the 1970s. The album began the collaboration with guitarist Mick Ronson that would continue with such Bowie classics as Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane.

The 2020 re-release of The Man Who Sold The World restored the album’s intended title Metrobolist, while featuring a new mix by original producer Tony Visconti. Taking its name from the album’s opening track, which was named after a painting by Bowie’s friend George Underwood, the new two-CD set The Width Of A Circle acts as a complementary piece to that album. Its 21 tracks feature non-album singles, a BBC In Concert session, music for a TV play and further Visconti remixes wrapping up David’s recordings from 1970 and revealing the first sonic steps toward Hunky Dory.

Also released on 28th May is a picture disc version of The Man Who Sold The World album, featuring the striking black and white imagery of the 1972 reissue.

The Man celebrates his 50th birthday

dbt105_tmwstw_alt_cvrs_bnet_1080sq.jpg

“Oh no, not me, I never lost control”

Last week we posted the newly discovered evidence that the UK version of The Man Who Sold The World (TMWSTW), was released on Thursday 8th April 1971, fifty years ago today.

Judging by today’s celebrations all over Bowie socials, the small detail that we posted the item on 1st April did nothing to make fans suspicious of this new information. And rightly so, it's a good old-fashioned fact.

Also issued on the same day were two compilations containing Bowie tracks. Dimension Of Miracles was a double vinyl Mercury sampler which contained tracks from new and recent releases including The Width Of A Circle.

Meanwhile Philips released The Sound Of The Seventies, not a wholly convincing description of the content seeing as the Bowie track was from the previous decade in the shape of Space Oddity.

Today’s montage is just for fun and features reimagined versions of the front cover of TMWSTW, alongside the released version you all know and love.

Bowie Thing hits #102

dbt102_4_eight-tracks_1080sq.jpg

Just a note to say that the #DailyBowieThing we started on the official Bowie Facebook and Instagram pages has morphed into #AnOccasionalBowieThing, albeit still with very frequent posts.

BOWIE THING – #102

“Listen to 8-tracks by Sam Therapy and King Dice...”

We’ve featured a lot of RFs* since we started #DailyBowieThing last November, so it’s surprising it’s taken this long to get around to the 8-track cartridge.

We’ve written enough about them over the years, so we won’t bore you with more detail, suffice to say, this once hugely popular format is no longer in production.

Bowie 8-tracks were produced from 1967 through to 1987 with all the territorial variations a collector would expect. In short, it’s not an area the faint-hearted should embark upon.

However, if this is an area of collecting that appeals, check out John Carroll & Leo Rodia’s exhaustive site: BowieOnTape.com – But, be warned, as brilliant a resource as it is, it may make you think twice before you embark upon this particular endeavour.

We have illustrated this item with the four earliest examples we are aware of, clockwise from top left...

1 = 1967 US Deram album debut, unfortunately missing its outer cardboard slipcase...presuming there was one.

2 = 1970 UK Decca The World Of David Bowie, still in original shrinkwrap.

3 = 1971 UK Mercury The Man Who Sold The World, again, no slipcase but impossible to find these days.

4 = 1971 US Mercury The Man Who Sold The World, in original shrinkwrap and does turn up fairly regularly.

There are suggestions that #4 is a counterfeit, but that’s a can of worms we’ll be opening another day.

TMWSTW release date correction

1971_tmwstw_vinyl_release_mont_1080sq.jpg

“For which my reputation swept back home in drag”

Back in November of last year we said we weren’t sure about the accepted release date of Wednesday 4th November 1970, for Mercury’s US release of The Man Who Sold The World (TMWSTW).

We have since uncovered more information which points to the album coming out sometime in January 1971, though we don’t yet have an exact date. We will do a follow up with some of the ‘evidence’ that led us to that conclusion at some point.

Meanwhile, next week sees the 50th anniversary of the release of the UK version of TMWSTW, also via Mercury. The recorded release date for what is often referred to as the 'drag' or 'dress' sleeve is 10th April, 1971. Being a Saturday, this was another date that didn’t sit comfortably with us.

Tris Penna came to the rescue only yesterday with some items from his impressive collection, namely original release sheets and a reviewer’s copy with a date stamp on the back sleeve. (Look closely, it is there.)

So, here’s hard evidence that TMWSTW was actually released on Thursday 8th April 1971. With Friday 9th April 1971 being Good Friday, this Thursday release makes perfect sense. The release of Aladdin Sane was similarly affected by Easter.

Mercury’s failure to promote the release of TMWSTW won’t have helped the dismal UK sales, prompting Bowie to make this comment later the same year: “It sold like hotcakes in Beckenham, and nowhere else.”

Bowie’s first solo single is 55 today

do_anything_45_demo_and_rsg_1080sq.jpg

“Thousand years and I’ll return...“

Hot on the heels of Can’t Help Thinking About Me, David Bowie’s Do Anything You Say/Good Morning Girl single was released on the Pye label on this day in 1966.

Bowie penned both songs and though he was backed by The Buzz on these Tony Hatch produced recordings, the single was the first to be credited to Bowie alone.

You can hear an alternate mix of the track along with Bowie’s other 1966 output on I Dig Everything: The 1966 Pye Singles: http://smarturl.it/Bowie1966

Our montage shows Bowie performing Can't Help Thinking About Me the previous month on Ready Steady Go!, and the Pye Records press release lifted from Kevin Cann’s remarkable tome, ANY DAY NOW – The London Years: 1947 – 1974, where you can read the full unobscured release along with so much more.
