2001: A Space Odyssey is fifty

major_tom_v2_1080sq.jpg

“An epic drama of adventure and exploration”

Stanley Kubrick’s remarkable 2001: A Space Odyssey was released in the UK on May 10, 1968.

Here’s an edited excerpt from Wikipedia for those unfamiliar with the plot:

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 epic science fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The screenplay was written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, and was inspired by Clarke's short story "The Sentinel". The film, which follows a voyage to Jupiter with the sentient computer HAL after the discovery of a mysterious black monolith affecting human evolution, deals with themes of existentialism, human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and the existence of extraterrestrial life. It is noted for its scientifically accurate depiction of spaceflight, pioneering special effects, and ambiguous imagery.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

A 21-year-old David Bowie was so impressed by it that it became the inspiration for his first hit single the following year, Space Oddity.

Suggestions of mind-altering substances taken to enhance viewer appreciation of some of the more psychedelic scenes, weren’t exactly discouraged by one of the myriad posters produced to promote the film, running with the tagline: “the ultimate trip”.

Here Bowie explains to Bill DeMain of Performing Songwriter in 2003 that his own viewing experience may have been tweaked somewhat...

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

BD: How did “Space Oddity” come about?

BOWIE: In England, it was always presumed that it was written about the space landing, because it kind of came to prominence around the same time. But it actually wasn’t. It was written because of going to see the film 2001, which I found amazing. I was out of my gourd anyway, I was very stoned when I went to see it, several times, and it was really a revelation to me. It got the song flowing.

It was picked up by the British television and used as the background music for the landing itself. I’m sure they really weren’t listening to the lyric at all (laughs). It wasn’t a pleasant thing to juxtapose against a moon landing. Of course, I was overjoyed that they did. Obviously some BBC official said, “Oh, right then, that space song, Major Tom, blah blah blah, that’ll be great.” “Um, but he gets stranded in space, sir.” Nobody had the heart to tell the producer that (laughs).

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

The song introduced the character of Major Tom, revisited in Ashes To Ashes and the David Bowie featuring Pet Shop Boys version of Hallo Spaceboy. The film’s influence was also apparent in the videos for Jump They Say and Blackstar.

Today’s 'lyric quotation' is actually the tagline for another of the 2001: A Space Odyssey posters (see montage), but it could easily be a description of Bowie’s own career.

FOOTNOTE: The image of Dave at the top of our montage is from a scene where he is disabling the all-controlling and murderous on-board computer, HAL, by removing his memory banks.

As HAL shuts down one of the final piece of dialogue goes thus:

HAL: My instructor was Mr Langley, and he taught me to sing a song. If you’d like to hear it, I can sing it for you.

Dave: Yes, I’d like to hear it HAL, sing it for me.

To bring things full circle, The Langley Schools Music Project recorded a version of  Space Oddity in 1976. The tapes were found and finally issued 25 years later in, you guessed it, 2001!

Bowie said this version of Space Oddity was "a piece of art that I couldn’t have conceived of", describing the vocals as "earnest if lugubrious" and the backing arrangement as "astounding".

Make up your own mind here.

Beckenham fundraiser tickets on sale now

beckenham_2018_v2_1080sq.jpg

“Maybe I should announce it? Should I?”

BOWIE’S BECKENHAM ODDITY is an annual fundraiser, supported by David Bowie when he provided signed items for auction at the event.

This year the Bowie Archive has donated another item signed by him, more details of which will follow before the festival in August.

Money raised goes to the Bandstand Restoration & Plaque Fund. Meanwhile here’s the press release, with ticket links, etc...

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

BOWIE’S BECKENHAM ODDITY 2018:

Saturday, 11th August – 12 noon to 8pm

Croydon Road Recreation Centre, Beckenham, BR3 3PR

A festival celebrating the life and legacy of David Bowie, his time in Beckenham and beyond.

Fans and music lovers worldwide are invited to come together on Saturday 11th August 2018, in Beckenham, South London, to celebrate David Bowie's songs, life and influence, in the park where his rise to stardom began back in 1969.

The third “Bowie’s Beckenham Oddity” will take place at Croydon Road Recreation Ground, centred around the same iconic bandstand where Bowie and friends from the Beckenham Arts Lab held the UK’s first Free Festival - “The Growth Summer Festival” - on 16 August, nearly 49 years ago. The festival coincided with the release of David’s first hit single “Space Oddity” and the day was later immortalised with another Bowie single release: “Memory Of A Free Festival”.

This year’s event kicks off at 12 noon, with a line-up of musical talent who will reprise Bowie’s greatest songs, including “Life On Mars?”, the career defining classic he wrote whilst sat on the bandstand steps as well as doing some of their own songs.

Other attractions include food and drinks by local vendors, a raffle of donated prizes, and the auction of Bowie related memorabilia.

Tickets cost £10 adults, £5 for 10 to 16 year olds, and under 10's go free! Tickets are available online in advance here or at the gate on the day of the event.

Fans can also support the event via the personalised brick sales, which will be laid in their name around the bandstand on restoration. They can also donate to the “Bowie Bandstand Restoration & Plaque Fund”, which will honour not only David Bowie, but all of the people who took part in the initial 1969 festival.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

B.B.O. Organiser Wendy Faulkner

After being actively involved in previous fundraiser events for the bandstand, when news broke of David Bowie’s death, Wendy felt they had to do this tribute for him and to get this unique piece of musical history restored in his name:

“It’s not just about Bowie, but also all the people who were involved with him along his path to stardom. Brixton has its mural, Aylesbury now has its Earthly Messenger statue, but for me the most real and meaningful place has to be at the bandstand. His ties to the borough and the bandstand are without question; he thrived here, having found the freedom to develop the songs that would later change him, change music and change the world. Slightly off the beaten track, it’s well worth the journey to come along to see it and experience it first-hand.

I'm pleased that David Bowie knew of the fundraising efforts, and donated signed items for the events before his passing. We will never see anyone like Bowie again, a true legend and star, and this is our way to keep the memory alive and put the iconic bandstand on the map.”

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

“Bowie’s Beckenham Oddity” is supported by idverde , Bromley Parks, and The London Borough of Bromley, who have named the bandstand “The Bowie Bandstand” in his honour.

Tickets here.

“The paintings are all your own”

David Bowie collected all of the fan art he was sent over the years and now the Brooklyn Museum has fulfilled his dream that one day they should be exhibited. We’re posting a piece online every Friday with the hashtag #DavidBowieArt.

Unfortunately, the creators of the majority of the works collected are unknown, but it would be a great help if anybody reading this has more information, be it the artists themselves or somebody who knows them. We’ve had half of the artists contact us so far.

Today’s likeness is of Bowie as Thomas Jerome Newton in the film The Man Who Fell To Earth.

Duncan recommends Bowie Book Club book #5

american_unreason_brian_1080sq.jpg

“I’m Afraid Of Americans”

Following last month’s recommendation (George Orwell's Down & Out in Paris & London), Duncan Jones has posted his fifth selection for the Bowie Book Club on twitter.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Duncan Jones @ManMadeMoon May 2nd

OK, gang.  I'm late on the book of the month, and I know that means you won't have as much time to order but May is a long month, so suck it up!

The book of the month is...

Susan Jacoby’s The Age of American Unreason

Seems like a good time for it.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Susan Jacoby’s The Age of American Unreason synopsis:

Combining historical analysis with far-reaching contemporary observation, Susan Jacoby dissects a modern America at odds with its heritage of Enlightenment reason and with 21st century knowledge and science. With mordant wit, the author offers an unsparing indictment of the ways in which dumbness and junk thought have permeated throughout American society both on the political right and the left. Much of Jacoby s diagnosis of the ills of contemporary American culture is acutely relevant in the UK, but she also presents a fascinating and persuasive account of many aspects of American society that baffle British observers. Why, for instance, uniquely among western democracies, are Darwin's theories still controversial in the United States? What is driving the current resurgence of American Christian fundamentalism? Jacoby's witty, impassioned book is essential reading for anyone with a serious interest in the most powerful country in the world.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

The Age of American Unreason is from DAVID BOWIE'S TOP 100 BOOKS list.

If you don’t do Twitter (where you can respond to Duncan directly), feel free to leave your thoughts about this book in the comments section.

FOOTNOTE: See this twitter thread posted by Duncan last week for the relevance of today’s picture.

Here’s a recap for those of you who don’t do twitter...

Duncan Jones @ManMadeMoon April 28

Speaking of which, our lovely little girl has a name. (We chose it a while ago)

Zowie Tala Mabsie Jones.

About time SOMEONE made use of my middle name, even if I wasn’t ready to!

Duncan Jones @ManMadeMoon April 28

Zowie, because I’m an egomaniac

Tala, is a beautiful name & one Tagalog meaning for it is “Star”

Mabsie in memory of the wonderful women Marion Skene who raised me & died last year

And Jones for this...

The Coasters - Along Came Jones

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Bowie fans of a certain age will remember well the days when little Zowie Bowie was frequently featured in pop magazines around the globe.

This particular image was taken in Amsterdam in 1974 and appeared in the pages of Dutch magazine, Popfoto. The cover boasts the lead singer of The Sweet, Brian Connolly, who probably nicked his hairdo from Zowie, a bit.

Olympian Bowie by Denis O’Regan

barnes_to_bowie_1080sq.jpg

“Halloween Jack is a real cool cat”

The disarmingly charming Denis O’Regan is having one of his 'in conversation' evenings, at the very place today’s Bowie picture was taken by him: the world-famous Olympic studios in Barnes, in the UK.

Here’s the blurb regarding the event from the Olympic studios page...

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

FROM BARNES TO BOWIE: DENIS O’REGAN IN CONVERSATION AT OLYMPIC STUDIOS

“Photographer Denis O’Regan grew up in Barnes and still loves living here with his wife and son. He took his baby steps around Barnes pond, saw St Mary’s church go up in flames, witnessed The Beatles and Ziggy Stardust nearby at the Hammersmith Odeon, and took his first offstage pictures of David Bowie outside Olympic studios during the recording of his ‘Diamond Dogs’ album. On the 44th anniversary of the album’s release Denis will take us behind the scenes of his rock & roll years since that day in 1974.

In 1976, Denis documented the London Punk scene. Six years later he toured Europe with the Rolling Stones, and the following year shot David Bowie’s entire ‘Serious Moonlight’ world tour before setting off around the world again with Duran Duran, Queen, Spandau Ballet, Pink Floyd, and once more, David Bowie. A month before publication of his magnificent ‘Ricochet : David Bowie 1983’ boxed set of books and photographs produced in co-operation with the David Bowie estate, Denis heads to Screen 1 to tell the story of the tour, the boxed set, and regale us with anecdotes of life on the road in the Eighties with Rock royalty. From Barnes to Bowie and back.”

Aladdin the charts again

occ_mont_all_april27_1080sq.jpg

“Thanking one and all”

With today’s publication of the new charts by the Official Charts Company (OCC), David Bowie’s music has yet again proved its enduring popularity with the music buying public.

The Official Albums Chart Top 100 (includes all formats)

(27 April 2018 - 03 May 2018)

22 - WELCOME TO THE BLACKOUT - LIVE LONDON 78 - Parlophone (RSD)

25 - ALADDIN SANE - Parlophone

35 - LEGACY - Parlophone

43 - BOWIE NOW - Parlophone (RSD)

All of those were released last Friday, April 20th, excepting Legacy which has enjoyed 75 weeks on the album chart.

With the vinyl boost of RSD, Bowie fared even better on the Official Vinyl Albums Chart:

Official Vinyl Albums Chart Top 40

(27 April 2018 - 03 May 2018)

01 - WELCOME TO THE BLACKOUT - LIVE LONDON 78 - Parlophone (RSD)

02 - ALADDIN SANE - Parlophone

05 - BOWIE NOW - Parlophone (RSD)

18 - DAVID BOWIE - UMC (RSD)

That’s a good turnout for Parlophone with three albums in the top five and UMC can’t be unhappy with the Top 20 placing for their David Bowie RSD release.

Finally, Parlophone’s Let’s Dance (Demo) 12" released for RSD is at #2 on the Official Vinyl Singles Chart.

Shooting Bowie for huH and Ray Gun

dbn_huh_montage_v3_1080sq.jpg

“Hand in hand in love with love uh-huH”

You may remember a rather tasty magazine from the late 90s called huH. It was a delightful thing to look upon and that was in no small measure down to designer Jérôme Curchod and the absurdly talented Vaughan Oliver of v23/4AD fame, as Creative Director.

The pictures and text were both of a very high standard too, and the September 1995 issue was particularly special on account of the world’s most beautiful man adorning the cover. This issue contained a great interview with Bowie (conducted by huH's Managing Editor Dean Kuipers), accompanied by a very unusual set of pictures taken by Kevin Kerslake.

The unofficial, but rather splendid fan page: David Bowie News (DBN), has a brief interview with huH Editorial Director, Mark Blackwell, along with previously-unseen shots from his '90s Polaroid diary of Bowie being put into a cage for the shoot and pictures of DB with the huH and Ray Gun team.

Ray Gun was another game-changing magazine, apparently named  after the Moonage Daydream lyric. They had their own equally stunning Bowie cover published the following month, followed up with another in March 1997.

Nick Vernon of DBN asked Mark Blackwell about his memories of working with David for both Raygun and huH...

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

“We loved working with Bowie - and we did many cover stories and other projects with him over the years - because we always knew we’d end up with much more than just the standard thing of a singer or a musician hyping whatever their latest project happened to be and answering the same questions every other magazine would be asking in the exact same way. With Bowie it would always become some grand artistic collaboration of sorts - the photos would be unique and beautiful and the interview would be deep and thought-provoking. We’d match him up with great writers like Dean Kuipers and amazing photographers like Kevin Kerslake or Ian Davies, and magic would always happen, because he was a true artist and one of those rare souls you could honestly call a 'visionary'. He took these collaborations with us very seriously, never approaching them as simply something he 'had to do to promote his new record' - plus he had a great sense of humor that always came through.”

“As far as this particular day at Smashbox goes, one thing that very much stands out is that over the course of all my years of writing and editing music stories and going to photo shoots, I'm almost positive this was the only time I ever actually stepped into a photographer's shot with an artist during an actual shoot. I'm guessing it's the same for Marvin Jarrett and Randy Bookasta - we just never did that because we all probably felt it would seem unprofessional or intrusive or just plain silly. In this case, however, Bowie cheerfully invited us to come over and jump into a shot with him, and it really does reflect that sense of warmth and collaboration he exuded - making the people around him a part of his artistic process. In person he was exactly as you'd hope he'd be: charming, suave, smart, and super cool. I'm so glad we did it, because I treasure these photos with him, what a cool memento to have from this era.”

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Many thanks to Mark Blackwell and to Kevin Kerslake for the excellent photos from this shoot and to Nick Vernon for letting us run his exclusive. Go here for the full thing with more pictures from the session.

Bowie fan art #8 at Brooklyn Museum

dba_week8_1000sq.jpg

“The paintings are all your own”

David Bowie collected all of the fan art he was sent over the years and now the Brooklyn Museum has fulfilled his dream that one day they should be exhibited. We’re posting a piece online every Friday with the hashtag #DavidBowieArt.

Unfortunately, the creators of the majority of the works collected are unknown, but it would be a great help if anybody reading this has more information, be it the artists themselves or somebody who knows them. We have a head start with the artist’s signature this week, though we can only confidently make out Prince as the last name.

Today’s likeness is based on a Steve Schapiro shot, famously and mischievously shot against a green background. According to Schapiro, he and Bowie joked about shooting a series of close-up portraits on a putrid green background because they felt it was the worst possible colour for a magazine cover - the image became a People magazine cover in 1976.

As you can see, our featured artist has invented an entirely new background, thereby removing the putrid green problem.

You can enjoy all of the pieces on display at the exhibition until July 15th. Tickets and details of other Bowie-related events at the Brooklyn Museum here.

Aladdin Sane 45th Anniversary silver vinyl out now

as_45th_april19_mont_1080sq.jpg

“Passionate bright young thing”

Today sees the release of the strictly limited, one run only, silver vinyl edition of Aladdin Sane. This pressing contains Ken Scott’s approved 2013 remaster and is released 45 years to the day since the original release date for the album (April 20th, 1973).

As mentioned previously, Aladdin Sane was thought to have been issued the week before on 13th April, 1973. However, we uncovered new evidence proving the release date was officially the 20th, but being Good Friday in the UK, the album was 'made available' on the 19th (see trade advert in montage).

Mainly on account of having received 100,000 pre-orders, the LP entered the UK chart at #1 on Saturday May 5th 1973. It retained the top spot for five weeks and stayed in the Top Ten for 27 weeks. Aladdin Sane peaked at #17 in America, making it Bowie's most successful album commercially in both countries to that date. It is estimated to have sold 4.6 million copies worldwide, making it one of Bowie’s biggest-selling LPs.

Aladdin Sane spawned two hit singles in the UK, The Jean Genie and Drive-In Saturday, which reached #2 and #3 respectively. Both preceded the album’s release.

The album cover features a red and blue lightning bolt across Bowie's face in a picture taken by Brian Duffy, with a full length shot adorning the inner gatefold. It’s regarded as one of the most iconic album sleeves of all time. Mick McCann writing in The Guardian described the image of Bowie as "the Mona Lisa of album covers".

In 2003, Aladdin Sane was ranked among six Bowie entries on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time.

This silver vinyl edition of Aladdin Sane will only be available to ‘bricks and mortar’ retail stores and not through on-line emporiums. The perfect warm-up for RSD 2018 on Saturday.

Go here for the full press release.

Duke and Earl reunited in Hoylake

“Here are we, one magical moment”

There was a very sweet surprise on Thursday evening (April 12) for legendary sideman Earl Slick at The Sidings in Hoylake, Wirral. Earl had been entertaining a packed and very appreciative house during one of the venue’s ‘in conversation’ evenings with stories from his life in music with David Bowie and John Lennon.

Slicky also produced his guitar and proceeded to slay the assembled throng with a few of his ‘greatest riffs’ from some of the biggest tunes in musical history, shouted out to him by the crowd. But it was during the autograph session that the tables were turned and Earl was in for the evening’s biggest surprise.

From the line of fans, long time Bowie fan Paul Häggqvist stepped forward and reunited Earl with a gold disc originally presented to the guitarist for his work on Bowie’s Station To Station in 1976. The award had gone missing in the 90s! Paul acquired the disc a few years ago and had a feeling its owner might like it back and so he travelled to the venue especially to deliver it in person.

Venue manager Kelsey Hodkinson said: “It truly was a wonderful evening having Earl with us here in Hoylake, he was an absolute star and when he was reunited with his gold disc it just topped off a brilliant night for everyone”.

We’ll leave you with a quotation from Mr Slick regarding this magical moment.

“When Paul presented me with the Station to Station gold disc on Thursday night that had gone missing in the 90s I couldn’t believe it. To lose something in New York and then for it to turn up years later in Hoylake (near Liverpool) is remarkable. Most incredible of all is the generosity of Paul Häggqvist, I’m really knocked out by this.

To all you folks that came to 'The Cavern Club' in Liverpool on Thursday afternoon and 'The Sidings' in Hoylake later that evening, it's not the size of the city that counts, it's the people that live there that make the difference. Thank you all for such a great reception. I will always remember it. See you all soon. ES"
