The A to Z of David Bowie Podcast

db_mr_mont_1000sq.jpg

“Give it a whirl and I'll love you till Tuesday”

Marc Riley has long flown the Bowie flag very high at the BBC over the years. His loyalty was rewarded directly many times via interviews and even a radio session in October 1999 for the show that Marc co-hosted with Mark Radcliffe. The pair introduced Bowie onstage a couple of times too. Marc also had the privilege of conducting the last ever radio interview with DB. Bowie is frequently featured on his long-running BBC Radio 6 Music show these days too.

Having been a superfan since 1972, Marc is more qualified than most for his next project, The A to Z of David Bowie by Marc Riley and Rob Hughes podcast, which launches on Tuesday 30th January at 3am, with subsequent episodes released every Tuesday at the same time.

The A to Z of David Bowie is available on iTunes, acast and all good podcast services.

Keep reading for an interview with Marc Riley regarding the show.

Total Blam Blam in conversation with Marc Riley - January 2018

TBB: How did The A to Z of David Bowie by Marc Riley and Rob Hughes come about?

MR: Well Bowie has been a huge part of my life and I can say the same for Rob so once we’d kinda accepted the fact that he was no longer with us we tried to work out how we could channel our love of Bowie into something positive. We could have written a Book (well Rob could have written it and I could have coloured in the pictures), but the glut of books that followed David’s death almost immediately ruled that out… of course some of those books were great - which  made our decision not to go down that route even  easier.

I did a Podcast for Adam Buxton - who’s obviously a big Bowie fan too - and I thought maybe that was a way to get the idea out of our system. That was only a few months after David’s death in the June of 2016. Anyway… I ran it past Rob and he was up for doing a podcast.

TBB: Obviously you have taken on a massive undertaking with this, was it a bit daunting?

MR: It really was. And once we started writing down all the subjects we wanted to cover in the A to Z format we realised that there was much more work than we’d realised. I mean… since we started researching David’s life, late 2016 we started hearing of stories and events that we didn’t know anything about. No great surprise really I suppose. There are people out there who have forgotten more about Bowie than Rob or I will ever know - but it was a surprise to us! So many of the Bowie stories make you smile from ear to ear.

TBB: Any examples of that spring to mind?

MR: I love the fact that he nearly made an Album with Christopher Lee… I didn’t know he met the queen as a young boy. There was his relationship with Edgar Broughton which never reached its full potential - but did see Edgar managing to get his way into the after-show party at the 1973 farewell show and get himself - seemingly - heroically  drunk. There’s loads  of stuff. And then  you find yourself delving deep into the albums that have been a part of your life for so long and learning stuff. Like the story of how Aladdin Sane ended up with lightning bolt on his face… ah… there’s too much to recall here.

TBB: How many episodes of the A to Z of David Bowie do you have planned?

MR: To be brutally honest we haven’t a clue. We sat down to record all the subjects we’d gotten together for ‘A’ thinking it would amount to maybe 40 minutes’ worth of podcast time. That turned out to be 110 minutes!! That’s TWO Podcasts. Our ramblings on Aladdin Sane take 25 minutes alone! So far all the  letters we’ve recorded have come in at roughly the same length. 110 minutes. So A, B, C, D and E are all roughly 30-35 minutes long and in 2 parts… but F came out as 3 episodes. Looking at that as a rough guide I’d expect the whole series to be… maybe… 40+ episodes??

TBB: This isn’t the first A to Z you and Rob have done, is it? You also did the punk one for BBC 6 Music, right?

MR: Yeah - what came first, the chicken or the egg? After we’d decided to have a run at a David Bowie A to Z, I saw the opportunity for doing a less specific subject that would work for the show. It’s a tried and tested formula but I knew it would be as good (or as bad) as the content it held.

So I went for ‘Punk and New Wave' which proved to be really popular. Ironically, so much so that 6 Music decided to edit it down and put it out as a Podcast. Did really well. We’re currently doing a Psych A to Z… but I don’t know if that’s going to a Podcast or not.

TBB: How do people get to hear the A to Z of David Bowie?

MR: Our agency is called Acast. They have an App. And of course Apple Podcasts… or wherever you generally get your podcasts! It launches on Tuesday 30th January at 3am and the following episodes get released every Tuesday at the same time. That’s the plan anyway.

TBB: I notice the A to Z of David Bowie already hit the #1 on the iTunes music podcast chart before it’s even out there, just on the strength of people pre-registering their interest. How have they shown their anticipation?

MR: Positive. Though I’m sure we’ll get some ‘facts’ wrong. David’s life is littered with myths and misinformation. I’m also sure some people won’t agree with our opinions on various Bowie matters… but there’s nothing we can do  about that… PUBLISH  AND BE DAMNED!!

TBB: The A to Z of David Bowie logo is reminiscent of a DavidBowie.com logo which utilised letters from various Bowie album sleeves. Did it take long to get to the final version?

MR: How would I know? You designed it!

TBB: Finally, you and Mark Radcliffe met Bowie on many occasions to interview him and he was a regular guest on your various radio shows. You also introduced a couple of his concerts at Hammersmith and the Manchester Move festival, both in 2002. He was clearly very keen on you, but did he ever comment on the times you attempted to ape his look?

MR: I think he once uttered “Clown!”, which I took as a cue to make up as one for our next meeting. He didn’t blink an eyelid!

Supro recreates Bowie’s Dual Tone Guitar

2018_supro_mont_v3_1000sq.jpg

“With my guitar a Dual Tone Supro”

Supro Pays Tribute to David Bowie with Limited Edition Recreation of his Dual Tone Guitar

Developed by Supro with assistance from the David Bowie Archive, the David Bowie Limited Edition Dual Tone is based on the main guitar David Bowie played on the Reality album and throughout his final world tour, “A Reality Tour”, in 2003-2004. Although he played a variety of guitars throughout his career, Bowie enjoyed a special relationship with the iconic vintage 60’s Supro Dual Tone he had customized to his specifications.

Bowie’s guitarist Earl Slick says, “Of all the electric guitars that David played and owned over the many years that we worked together, he loved the Supro best. He was quite proud of it actually. I’ve never seen him get attached to a guitar, except that one.”

Keep reading for the full press release or visit the dedicated Supro page here.

FOOTNOTE: If today’s lyric quotation sounds ever so slightly familiar, that’s possibly because you remember the original lyric from Sweet Head: “With my guitar and me soprano”, which we clumsily adapted.

During the recording of the Reality album in New York City in early 2003, Bowie purchased two early-60’s Supro Dual Tone guitars on EBay. One of them, which is prominently featured on the cover art of the New Killer Star single, was a 1961 hardtail model. A second Dual Tone was modified by master luthier Flip Scipio, who inlaid the top five fret slots with rainbow colors after installing a Bigsby vibrato at Bowie’s request. “They brought me the second guitar and needed it done very fast, within one day,” recalls Scipio. “That is why I did not reinstall the top frets. The fret filler is made of dyed Japanese maple. David loved the way this guitar looked and sounded, so I chose the colors based on what I thought would look cheerful. I felt that if I can be happy with the guitar, then David would be happy with the guitar as well.” It was this highly customized Supro Dual Tone that became Bowie’s favorite guitar and main live instrument, appeared on the cover of the “A Reality Tour” live album, and inspired this limited edition 2018 re-creation.

Why did Bowie choose the Dual Tone? Guitarist Gerry Leonard, who played on both the Reality album and tour, says: “David was a discerning collector of not only art, but all things to do with music, music artifacts and specific instruments. The Supro was a guitar that nailed a few of these criteria for him. It’s a very stylish guitar and it has a great vibe and sound. It was a fantastic guitar and David loved it so much, it was the only one he wanted to play, even though we had many other great instruments from famous makers available to him.”

Although we know that the guitar’s Art Deco style appealed to Bowie’s well-known flair for design, we also know that he had a fascination with the instrument’s early legacy. He advised James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem to get a Supro Dual Tone specifically because it was the guitar played by power-chord pioneer Link Wray. The Dual Tone famously appears in the promotional artwork for Wray’s 1958 hit song “Rumble”: a recording noteworthy for being the only instrumental song ever to be banned from US radio. Bowie even chose to pay homage to Link Wray, using “Rumble” as a musical interlude during the Reality Tour. Clearly, the rock and roll mythology of Link Wray and his affinity for Supro guitars made a lasting impact on David Bowie.

The Dual Tone model first appeared in Supro catalogs in the early 1950s. The distinctive tone of the Supro Vistatone pickups has been a consistent highlight of this instrument throughout its evolution. Supro’s 1953 catalog boasted: “We sincerely believe the pickup system to be the finest we have ever produced in over two decades of electronic development. Make an honest comparison with any instrument for tone, volume, and performance–you’ll be truly surprised.” Over the subsequent five years after ’53, the neck was improved, headstock changed, body widened, pickup wiring changed, and contoured bevels added to the body. By 1958, the Dual Tone was totally dialled in, and became a bestseller for Supro.

In keeping with the spirit of innovation that evolved the 1953 Dual Tone into the 1958 model favored by Link Wray, the construction of the Bowie guitar has been further developed with subtle tweaks and refinements to carry the torch into the present day—while retaining the vibe of the original instrument. This incarnation of the Dual Tone guitar features a 24 ¾” scale maple neck with a rosewood fretboard and set-neck construction. The alder body has a tummy cut for increased playing comfort, as well as an ergonomic neck joint, allowing full access to the high frets. Hardware appointments include Bigsby vibrato, Wilkinson roller bridge, butterfly tulip tuning pegs and a matched set of vintage-correct Vistatone pickups, designed to replicate the genuine Supro sound that David Bowie loved.

As a final touch, the David Bowie Limited Edition Dual Tone features a mirror-finish Bowie lightning bolt insignia on the face of the headstock. In further tribute to Bowie’s personal favorite Supro guitar, the top five frets have a multi-colored rainbow pattern inlaid into the fretboard to replicate the look of the custom work done by master luthier Flip Scipio for the Reality album and subsequent world tour.

• Official David Bowie Supro Dual Tone

• Individually numbered limited edition

• Mirror-finish Bowie headstock logo

• Rainbow fret lines on top 5 frets

• Authentic Bigsby vibrato

• Supro Vistatone pickups

• 24 ¾” scale length

Duncan Jones Announces MUTE Premiere

mute_announce_v2_1000sq.jpg

“I’m living in a silent film…”

@Unklerupert has been in touch with hot news and an update regarding Duncan Jones and MUTE...take it away, fellah...

Duncan Jones announced via Twitter today that his new film, MUTE, will premiere Worldwide on NETFLIX on Friday 23rd February 2018.

In a thread of tweets building up to the much anticipated announcement Duncan gave us the back story to the development...

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

“So some of you may be aware that I have previously called MUTE my “Don Quixote.” I did this, as much like Terry Gillian’s fabled film of that name, it seemed everything was against MUTE ever being made.

Back then the film was a very different beast. It was set in London, contemporary and the cast would have been Cary Grant, Boris Karloff & Bela Lugosi. OK. Maybe not that cast...

It was going to be my first film. I sent it to Sam Rockwell who loved it! ...but he wanted to play Leo, the part that would later go to Alex Skarsgård. I wouldn’t budge but was so enamoured with Sam, I decided to write something just for him. That was MOON.

Years past, MUTE kept being pushed to the back burner. Life filled up with SOURCE CODE, my amazing wife’s successful battle with cancer, WARCRAFT, dad’s cancer, baby, the wonderful woman who raised me, Marion’s sad loss to brain cancer. We’d do a graphic novel with Glenn Fabry.

But sadly that book never fully came to fruition.

But one day...

NETFLIX came to town!

NETFLIX, these crazy new kids on the block, had this totally crazy philosophy on film making straight out of the 70s. Don’t make 4 quad “please everyone” homogenous blobs! Make films filmmakers are passionate about & let the audience find them!

So here we are.

MUTE, Starring Alex Skarsgård, Justin Theroux & Paul Rudd.

Out on NETFLIX February 23.

Got there in the end!”

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Filmed on location in Berlin between Sept 28th 2016 - 17th Dec 2016 at the World famous Babelsberg Film Studio, located in Potsdam-Babelsberg outside Berlin (Where Fritz Lang's Metropolis was filmed in 1925) Duncan Jones’ latest film MUTE is described as a Sci-fi Casablanca that Duncan has previously also described as a love letter to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. Here’s the full blurb...

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Berlin. Forty years from today. A roiling city of immigrants, where East crashes against West in a science-fiction Casablanca.

Leo Beiler (Alexander Skarsgård), a mute bartender has one reason and one reason only for living here, and she’s disappeared. But when Leo’s search takes him deeper into the city’s underbelly, an odd pair of American surgeons (led by Paul Rudd) seem to be the only recurring clue, and Leo can’t tell if they can help, or who he should fear most.”

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

MUTE is a spiritual sequel to Duncan’s multiple award winning debut feature MOON being set in the same ‘Mooniverse’. Fans of MOON will be pleased to discover that MUTE sees the welcome return of Sam Rockwell so we *may* discover Sam Bell’s fate following on from the end of MOON… Further MOON related good news is the return of Clint Mansell on soundtrack duties, cinematography from Gary Shaw and Duncan’s long-time producer and partner at Liberty Films, Stuart Fenegan who commented back when MUTE was announced “can’t do sci-fi without Sam and Clint!”

As part of that original announcement in November 2015 Duncan said:

“I’ve been working towards making MUTE for 12 years now. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that we’re finally going to shoot this utterly unique film. The fact that I get to make it with Alexander Skarsgård and Paul Rudd makes it all the more exciting! MUTE is a film that will last. It is unlike any other science fiction being made today.”

Commenting further once MUTE had been picked up by NETFLIX Duncan said:

“Mute is an encapsulation of everything I am fascinated by; noir, science fiction, and unique people in trouble because of who and what they are. I’m delighted to be able to return to Berlin for the shoot, a place I lived for a period of time growing up, and I’m excited to be working with NETFLIX on a film that is so close to my heart.”

So unlike anything is it, that Duncan has been referring to MUTE as Marmite, or Marmute even ;) Which basically means you’re going to love it or hate it. MUTE then promises to be pure undiluted Jones.

Duncan recently tweeted:

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

“Dad quote, and, in a nutshell, why I'm making MUTE”

“If you feel safe in the area you’re working in, you’re not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you’re capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth. And when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting.”

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Commenting on working with NETFLIX at the end of 2017 Duncan said

“This year I was particularly thankful to NETFLIX for letting me make a movie as a work of artistic therapy for the last few incredibly difficult years.”

MUTE premieres Worldwide on NETFLIX on Friday 23rd February 2018

Keep up to date with all things MUTE by following Duncan on Twitter and the official MUTE Twitter account.

Full MUTE cast and crew available on IMDb.

FOOTNOTE: While you will understand the MarMute visual gag in our montage, you may be wondering what's going on with Duncan’s hat and beard... maybe keep your eyes peeled when watching MUTE to find out what's what!

David Bowie is… in Bloomingdale’s: Part 2

blooming_2_red_1000sq.jpg

I ran to the window, Looked through a pane or two”

Yesterday we told you that in celebration of the upcoming David Bowie Is at the Brooklyn Museum exhibition, Bloomingdale’s in New York has two windows given over to some of the exhibits and a few of Freddie Burretti’s 'daywear' outfits that won’t be in the exhibition.

As promised, our montage shows the other window and a shot of David wearing the featured outfit at Union Station, Los Angeles, in March 1973.

The windows will be up through the end of day on January 28th and are at the 60th Street and Lexington Avenue entrance.

Brooklyn is the final stop of the David Bowie Is world tour and it runs from March 2nd to July 15th.

FOOTNOTE: Yes, the original lyric from Panic In Detroit is: “I ran to the window, Looked for a plane or two...” - The other liberty we have taken (which the eagle-eyed among you may have spotted), is the horizontal flipping of the Bowie LA 73 pic. Very naughty.

DAVID BOWIE - LET’S DANCE (DEMO)

VERY SPECIAL DIGITAL ONLY BIRTHDAY SINGLE AVAILABLE HERE NOW

To celebrate what would have been the 71st birthday of David Bowie, the previously unreleased LET’S DANCE (DEMO) is available now as a special digital-only single via Parlophone for streaming and download.

In late 1982, David Bowie was visited at his home in Switzerland by Nile Rodgers to listen to songs for the album that became LET’S DANCE.

Inspired by the new songs that Bowie had written the pair decided to record a set of demos straight away. Without a band, the Montreux Jazz Festival organiser, Claude Nobs, was asked if there were any local musicians that could join the sessions to work on the demos. Turkish born Erdal Kızılçay, who would later work extensively with Bowie on Labyrinth, The Buddha Of Suburbia & 1. Outside, was recruited to play bass along with an unidentified drummer and second guitarist.

On 19th and 20th December, 1982, this makeshift band entered Mountain Studios in Montreux, Switzerland with David Richards (who also worked with Bowie on "Heroes", Under Pressure, Labyrinth, The Buddha Of Suburbia and 1. Outside) engineering. On their first day, they recorded a funky stripped back demo for Let’s Dance.

Thirty five years later the track has been mixed for the first time especially for this release by Nile Rodgers and Russell Graham at Nile’s Le Crib Studios in Westport, Connecticut.

Speaking of those early LET’S DANCE pre-production sessions, Nile Rodgers commented:

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

“I’ve been blessed with a wonderful career but my creative partnership with David Bowie ranks very, very, very high on the list of my most important and rewarding collaborations. This demo gives you, the fans, a bird's eye view of the very start of it! I woke up on my first morning in Montreux with David peering over me. He had an acoustic guitar in his hands and exclaimed, “Nile, darling, I think this is a HIT!”.

This recording was the first indication of what we could do together as I took his 'folk song' and arranged it into something that the entire world would soon be dancing to and seemingly has not stopped dancing to for the last 35 years! It became the blue print not only for Let’s Dance the song but for the entire album as well.

If you played 2nd guitar or drums let us know who you are!

The time we spent mixing it just before Christmas was full of tears as it felt like David was in the room with us. Happy Birthday David, I love you and we all miss you!".

At the end of the track, Bowie’s voice can be heard laughing saying "That’s it, that’s it! Got it, got it!”. Within four months ‘LET’S DANCE' would be one of the biggest and most influential hits of the decade.

Help Geoff MacCormack find mystery fans

1973_signing_fans_1000sq.jpg

“Where are we now, where are we now?”

You’re probably familiar with Geoff MacCormack’s picture of David Bowie signing autographs for three fans in 1973.

We're not certain of the gender of the lucky threesome (it was confusing in those days), and neither are we 100% certain of the whereabouts of the signing, though it’s most likely in Bournemouth on Friday May 25th, 1973, before the Bowie and The Spiders show at the Winter Gardens.

Do you recognise yourself in the picture, or do you perhaps know who these young folk are? If so, please let us know here in the comments section on Facebook. No fibbers please.

For those of you who have read this far, check out an extra bit of fun courtesy of Geoff in the aforementioned comments section.

A Happy New Year and a brand new moon

06400_mono_moon_1000sq.jpg

“I'll place the moon within your heart”

Inspired by Iman’s New Year supermoon Instagram post, here’s a previously unpublished picture of David Bowie by Total Blam Blam.

Obviously the moon was added after the fact, the original picture was taken at the Extras shoot in 2006.

Stay tuned for an exciting first week of 2018 leading up to January 8th and what would have been David’s 71st birthday.

Duncan launches Bowie Book Club via Twitter

hawksmoor_mont_v2_1000sq.jpg

“Screaming above Central London”

Back in October 2013 we exclusively posted the complete list of “DAVID BOWIE'S TOP 100 BOOKS”.

In case you’ve not already seen it on Twitter, Duncan Jones has now kicked off what we’re calling the Bowie Book Club. Here’s what he said about the idea and his first selection.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Duncan Jones @ManMadeMoon Dec 27

My dad was a beast of a reader. One of his true loves was Peter Ackroyd’s sojourns into the history of Britain & its cities. I’ve been feeling a building sense of duty to go on the same literary marathon in tribute to dad. Time allowing...

Duncan Jones @ManMadeMoon Dec 27

Alright gang! Anyone who wants to join along, we are reading Peter Ackroyd’s “Hawksmoor,” as an amuse cerveau before we get into the heavy stuff. You have until Feb 1.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Hawksmoor is in DAVID BOWIE'S TOP 100 BOOKS list, indeed it’s one of the books we illustrated in our montage back in 2013. It’s also a work we’ve loved for a long time here at DBHQ, since David first recommended it many years ago. We’ll leave you with the synopsis for this gripping and terrible tale of two Londons separated by two and a half centuries.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

'There is no Light without Darknesse and no Substance without Shaddowe'

So proclaims Nicholas Dyer, assistant to Sir Christopher Wren and the man with a commission to build seven London churches to stand as beacons of the enlightenment. But Dyer plans to conceal a dark secret at the heart of each church - to create a forbidding architecture that will survive for eternity. Two hundred and fifty years later, London detective Nicholas Hawksmoor is investigating a series of gruesome murders on the sites of certain eighteenth-century churches - crimes that make no sense to the modern mind . . .

'Chillingly brilliant . . . sinister and stunningly well executed'  - Independent on Sunday

Peter Ackroyd was born in London in 1949. A novelist, biographer and historian, he has been the literary editor of The Spectator and chief book reviewer for The Times, as well as writing several highly acclaimed books including a biography of Dickens and London: The Biography. He lives in London.

Bowie at The Rainbow 45 years ago tonight

1972_rainbow_xmas_eve_mont_1000sq.jpg

“Well the bitter comes out better on a Stollen guitar” *

David Bowie and The Spiders kicked off a short UK tour at the end of 1972 with a triumphant homecoming show at the Rainbow Theatre, on December 24th.

They were enjoying much greater chart recognition since previously being in the country and The Jean Genie had just entered the Top 20 on its way to #2 in the UK single chart.

David recalled this batch of shows and the Rainbow gig fondly in Mick Rock’s book, Moonage Daydream: “We put in a short tour of the UK between December and January 1972-73. It was always a great buzz to come back home and this was probably one of the best, highest energy jaunts of our short eighteen-month life. That's all it was, 18 months.

We had another Rainbow show on Christmas Eve, so I asked the audience beforehand to bring a toy to be donated to Dr Barnardo’s childrens’ home (http://smarturl.it/Barnardos), the organisation for which my dad had worked all of his life. I think we filled an entire truck with them.“

Indeed they did, as Andy Barding of Cygnet Committee (http://smarturl.it/CygnetCommittee) points out in this excellent celebration of the night, with contributions from Woody Woodmansey.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

’Twas the night before Christmas, 1972

… and in a North London concert hall David Bowie was making it a night to remember. And not just for his fans.

When tickets for his Christmas Eve show at the Rainbow Theatre were put on sale, David made a public appeal for concertgoers to bring toys with them as a charity donation. The response was fantastic, as David’s drummer Woody Woodmansey remembers:

“David’s toy appeal created more response than we could have imagined. There was a huge truckload of stuff. We hadn't done anything like that since the Save the Whale benefit concert much earlier on.” (Royal Festival Hall, London, July 8 1972)

The very next day, Christmas morning, the goodwill mountain of toys and games that had stacked up in the venue’s foyer was distributed to appreciative youngsters in children’s homes across London.

David was delighted. His father, who had passed away three years earlier, had been a public relations officer for Dr Barnardo Homes. So this was a cause close to his heart.

This sold-out Rainbow concert marked a triumphant homecoming for 25-year-old David and his band, the Spiders from Mars. They had just returned from nearly three months on the road in America and their absence from Britain had made homegrown hearts grow a lot, lot fonder.

NME writer and seasoned David Bowie concertgoer Charles Shaar Murray was taken aback by the frenzied audience reception.

“Just for the record, they've started screaming at David Bowie,” he wrote.

“At the Rainbow on Christmas Eve young girls were reaching out for our hero’s supple limbs and squealing in the customary manner. Whether it’s Bowiemania or Ziggymania or a combination of the two is not yet apparent.”

Rival music paper Melody Maker hit the newsstands with a David Bowie-dominated Christmas issue that same week. David was crowned their ‘main man of 1972’, and voted Top Vocalist in the end of year poll. The ‘Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’ album, which sold close to 200,000 copies in the UK and US during 1972, was declared the MM critics’ choice.

Those who attended the Rainbow were treated to a spectacular new live set kicked off by ‘Let’s Spend the Night Together’ (featuring David playing his new VCS3 Moog synthesizer). And as a bonus attraction they were the first in Britain to hear new boy Mike Garson on piano.

This was quickly followed by a “razor-edged” ‘Hang On To Yourself', which Charles Shaar Murray enthusiastically reported was “played better than I've ever heard it.” And this in spite of David having only just got over a bout of Asian flu.

In a radical break from the regular Ziggy show format, this festive concert did away with the half-time acoustic section in favour of an all-out electric experience.

“We had worked hard in the US,” said Woody, “and I think it had evolved into a rockier show. It was nice to get back to the UK, and a perfect way to end the year with a new set.”

Charles Shaar Murray agreed: “That American tour has really honed the Spiders to perfection. The show is tougher, flashier and more manic than it’s ever been before.”

Let’s hope it was all worth the £2.50 ticket price (£1.50 for a cheap seat in the Circle). The concert ended late and, this being Christmas Eve AND the early seventies, night buses and trains were few and far between. By the time the gig ended with ‘Rock ’n’ Roll Suicide’, all underground train services had stopped. Most Bowie freaks had to either walk home or shell out for taxis. At least one silver lame-clad fan spent the night curled up in a Finsbury Park shop doorway. It’s worth clarifying that this was the only London concert by David and the Spiders in December 1972. When Christmas Eve tickets sold out pretty much instantly, efforts were made to book the venue for an extra show on the previous day, December 23. But ultimately it could not be done.

There were dramatic scenes at the stage door, as the band made their way out that night.

Woody: “I do remember the fans outside the stage door when we exited. We had to actually push one over-enthusiastic fan who was brandishing a pair of scissors.

“As we came out she lunged forward and attempted to secure a lock of Mick Ronson’s hair and narrowly missed his left eye by a fraction of an inch.”

Afterwards, David headed for his South London home (where six Royal Mail sacks full of Christmas cards were waiting for him) and the Spiders were driven home to Yorkshire in a limo - though not by MainMan bodyguard Stuey George, as has been previously documented, says Woody.

“It snowed all the way and we arrived at my mum’s in the early hours and surprised them,” he said.

And on Christmas Day, as hundreds of London kids unwrapped surprise presents from those generous David Bowie fans, the rest of the country settled down in front of their tellies to watch the traditional Christmas Top of the Pops – and a repeat showing of that now-legendary ‘Starman’ performance.

1972 had been a super-stellar year for David and the Spiders. And that Christmas, for a lot of reasons, can be considered the icing on the cake.

Thanks Andy and Woody, much appreciated.

15-Page Bowie cover feature in Electronic Sound

elec_sound_iss_36_1000sq.jpg

“A New Career In A New Town”

The current issue of the superb Electronic Sound magazine @electronicmagazine  has 15 pages (including the front cover), devoted to David Bowie’s superhuman 1977 output.

If you purchase directly online you also get a free 7" vinyl single from that bloke off of Devo, Mark Mothersbaugh, who is also a part of Bowie’s 1977 story.

Here’s an edited version of the blurb:

ISSUE 36 MAG & VINYL BUNDLE

For one that started with him in a somewhat perilous state thanks to a rampant cocaine addiction, 1977 turned out to be quite the year for David Bowie. One that saw the release of two albums that would go on to influence an abundance of musicians and artists alike. To round off 2017, we turn the clock back 40 years in our cover feature and speak to some of the people that worked the ex-Thin White Duke over the course of 1977, and chronicle the encounters (both significant and trivial) that helped shaped Bowie and what would come next.

One of the people that Bowie crossed paths with that year is Mark Mothersbaugh, who incidentally features as this month’s seven-inch single. We were ecstatic when Mark agreed to Electronic Sound releasing a pair of his warped and mutated Christmas songs and here you can get them for the first time on limited edition vinyl. He also revealed to us what Devo’s first few days with Bowie were like back in 1977.

Bowie’s Lennon tribute 34 years ago tonight

hong_kong_bed_mont_1000sq.jpg

"Imagine all the people”

David Bowie’s Serious Moonlight World Tour climaxed with a performance of John Lennon’s Imagine in Hong Kong on December 8th, 1983.

It was David’s tribute to his friend who had been shot and killed on the same day in New York in 1980.

You can watch a visibly emotional Bowie singing the song to the sell-out audience at Hong Kong Coliseum here.

As you know, photographer Denis O’Regan was along for the ride for every date of the tour, as recorded in the upcoming Ricochet : David Bowie 1983.

Both of the pictures here were taken by Denis in Hong Kong on that very day.

If you’ve not already stumbled upon it, here’s a great little film of Mr O’Regan talking about working with DB:

U2’s tribute to David Bowie

db_bono_lp_05792_1000sq.jpg

"When I Live My Dream...”

Bono and the boys have nodded in Bowie’s direction a few times over the years, the latest being a dedication on their new album, Songs Of Experience:

“This album is dedicated to the lives and times of Dennis Sheehan, Jack Heaslip and the teenage dreams of David Bowie.”

A sweet thing to do and the perfect excuse to post a previously unpublished picture of Bowie and Bono backstage at Bowie’s Meltdown in June 2002.

Our reporter on the spot on the night reckons that Bono was probably whispering a 'Knock Knock' joke to Bowie that included the line: “Europe who?”. It’s possible.
