★ #2 in RS 50 best albums of 2016

“I'm a blackstar, way up”

Rolling Stone magazine has made David Bowie’s ★ LP their 2nd best album of 2016.

Sandwiched between Chance the Rapper (Coloring Book #3), and Beyoncé (Lemonade #1), this is what the magazine has to say about ★

There's never been a musical farewell anything like Blackstar: The Cracked Actor saved his bravest and boldest performance for the final curtain. David Bowie showed up on his 69th birthday to drop a surprise masterpiece, let an astonished world puzzle over the music for a couple of days, and then slipped off into the sky. Nearly a year later, Blackstar still gives up fresh mysteries with every listen. Right from the start, this came on as one of the Starman's most dizzyingly adventurous albums, stretching out in jazzy space ballads like "Lazarus" or the ten-minute title epic. (Producer Tony Visconti revealed Bowie was soaking up fresh inspiration from artists like Kendrick Lamar and D'Angelo.) But it took Bowie's death to reveal Blackstar as his rumination on mortality – anguished, bittersweet, mournful, refusing to give in to self-pity even as he sang his passionate final word, "I Can't Give Everything Away," a song every bit as moving as "Heroes." After a 50-year spree of rock & roll mind-bending, David Bowie still wasn't running out of ways to shock people. Damn. Blackstar remains an inspiration – and a challenge – to us all. R.S.

Uncut awards ★ and WCIBN? best releases of 2016

“At the centre of it all”

Uncut magazine in the UK has awarded David Bowie’s ★ album and the Who Can I Be Now? box set best new release and best archive release of the year, respectively. The Bowie At The Beeb box also makes it into the Top 20 of best archive releases of the year.

Congratulations to all involved in the creation of these albums and thanks to all of you who helped make them such a success.

Elsewhere in the mag there’s an article by David Cavanagh, as outlined by Editor‎ ‎John Mulvey, thus:

As it’s nearly 2017, though, we hope you’ll also allow us a little retrospective contemplation, as we round up the finest albums, archive releases, films and books of the year. There’s a strong piece from David Cavanagh, too, in which he tries to make clear-eyed sense of the year’s appalling losses. “The shock of losing Bowie knocked 2016 entirely off its axis,” he writes. “From that day forward, nobody’s death – not in music, not in sport, not in comedy, not in daily life – would be judged as an individual tragedy.

“Instead it would be viewed as more incontestable proof that 2016 was a year like no other, a year with a hex on it, a year gone rogue.”

Still, our Top 75 new albums list reveals that, in spite of everything, 2016 turned out to be an uncommonly rich year for music.

The January 2017 issue of Uncut is out now.

★ is MOJO’s album of 2016

“That's the message that I sent”

In the week that David Bowie’s ★ re-enters the Official Vinyl Albums Chart Top 10 at #9 (18 November 2016 - 24 November 2016), MOJO magazine in the UK has made the record their Album Of The Year, 2016. Congratulations to all involved in the creation of ★ and thanks to all of you who helped make the album such a big success.

Following the full-page appreciation of ★, wherein Mark Paytress talks about the album with Tony Visconti, there’s a four-page timeline of 'The Year Of Bowie' by Andrew Male.

Elsewhere, that other ex-pupil of Lindsay Kemp, Kate Bush, singles out ★ in a section titled: The Best Thing I’ve Heard All Year.

Kate also sang Bowie’s praises in an interview with The FADER, here’s an excerpt...

FADER: What contemporary artists do you admire?

KB: I don't listen to a lot of contemporary music, especially when I'm working. I tend to watch films or do other stuff. But one of the most powerful things that I heard recently was Blackstar by Bowie. I thought it was beautiful. Very moving of course, but I think one of the best things he's ever done.

FADER: You wrote a beautiful tribute to Bowie after he passed away. What was your relationship with him like?

KB: Well I was asked whether I would write something, and because he meant such a lot to me, I really felt moved to do so. He was one of my great heroes when I was growing up. He was such a brave artist, so unusual, and I loved his music. I met him a few times; he was really charming and playful. But I just sort of admired what he achieved creatively.

FADER: Bowie always challenged gender norms, which I think your work does too.

KB: Oh, thank you. I think when I'm working creatively, I don't really think of myself of writing as a woman. I just think of writing as me, as a person, if that makes sense.

Read the full thing here.

The January 2017 issue of MOJO is out now.

Proud Chelsea Exhibition

Bowie by Duffy

6th January - 5th February 2017

Proud Galleries is delighted to present ‘Bowie by Duffy’; a celebration of the dynamic relationship between two of the last century’s greatest artistic innovators. This exhibition of original prints signed by the late Brian Duffy, is a moving insight into the minds of two exceptional creatives in partnership between 1972 – 1980.

Duffy’s iconic images emphasise the longevity of Bowie’s distinctive persona and offer a poignant retrospective to one of the most pioneering and influential performers of modern times, on the anniversary of what would have been his 70th birthday and his untimely death.

Duffy worked with Bowie over a period of eight years, conducting five photographic shoots that captured the essence of this perpetual shapeshifter and some of the world’s most memorable images, including the acclaimed Aladdin Sane album cover, now referred to as the ‘Mona Lisa of Pop’. The iconic image is instantly recognised worldwide.

Beginning his career as a fashion designer, Duffy’s eye for detail and design transposed into his work as a photographer in a compelling and unique style. His photographs were published in numerous magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, creating some of the most memorable images of celebrities and fashion from the 60’s and 70’s. Determining the face of the era, Duffy enraptured the nation with a creativity that characterised him as redefining documentary fashion photography.

Proud Chelsea will showcase the last remaining signed collection of Duffy’s photographs of David Bowie, a compilation which embody the artistic eye of the photographer and Bowie’s unique innovation and influence. ‘Bowie by Duffy’ will be a tribute to a musical innovator, cultural icon and a legend of revolutionary music, art and style.

In aid of the Children & the Arts charity

Monday 14th November 2016; To honour David Bowie’s 70th birthday, Bowie band members, friends, and a massive ensemble of top recording and touring musicians from around the world are getting together for a one-time only series of global goodwill concerts, in aid of local charities, called Celebrating David Bowie.

The London concert takes place in David’s birthplace in South London at O2 Academy Brixton, on what would have been his 70th birthday on 8 January, with proceeds from the show benefitting the ‘Children & the Arts’ charity (http://www.childrenandarts.org.uk/).

The concerts, announced sporadically, all take place in cities that have a strong connection with David Bowie and his work. All feature the core 30 musicians travelling, plus another 40 or more local musicians, to create a sound like no other.

The concept grew out of two informal large ensemble shows with over 70 musicians in Los Angeles and San Francisco in the spring of 2016 including Gary Oldman, Seal, Ewan McGregor, Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads, and Bowie band alumni from Space Oddity to the latest Blackstar album. Then came the unforgettably moving tribute to David at The BRIT Awards 2016 where his touring band performed with Lorde to cover ‘Life On Mars’.

Bowie’s close friend Gary Oldman, who delivered an emotional speech about David at The BRIT Awards, and this giant ensemble from Los Angeles and New York City, are joined in London by former Bowie band members Mike Garson, Earl Slick, Adrian Belew, Mark Plati, Gerry Leonard, Gail Ann Dorsey, Sterling Campbell, Zachary Alford, Holly Palmer and Catherine Russell, along with many other special guests to be announced.

Individually these musicians performed, wrote and recorded together with David through several decades including the 1973’s Ziggy Stardust tour, the Diamond Dogs tour, Isolar II (Heroes) tour, to the hugely successful Serious Moonlight tour, the Sound And Vision greatest hits tour to Glastonbury 2000, Heathen, his final A Reality Tour and many of them appeared on Bowie’s triumphant comeback album, The Next Day.

After The BRIT Awards performance, Bowie’s last touring band refrained from further opportunities to honour him as it was still too emotional, but as word reached them about the sincerity of this particular group with Gary Oldman, they slowly decided to come on board to say goodbye to David properly in a grand show, keeping in line with his tremendous legacy. Far from a tribute and never referred to as one, this ensemble includes David Bowie people, playing David Bowie music and in David Bowie style. This is the first and last time this inner circle will do anything like this and these shows are likely to be the last time that they perform his music together; sadly, this may be the closest anyone will come to a David Bowie live experience ever again.

It's all going on in Aylesbury

“Pushing thru the market square...”

Lots of things happening in Aylesbury in celebration of David Bowie and Ziggy Stardust.

Firstly, a big thank you to Michael Putland for giving us a couple of previously unpublished pictures, taken at that first Ziggy show at Friars Aylesbury on January 29th, 1972. View more of Michael’s superb Bowie pictures here: http://smarturl.it/PutlandBowie

The David Bowie Aylesbury Statue Kickstarter Campaign has now reached a quarter of its target with just over £25,000 raised so far. Go here to read all about that and to contribute: http://smarturl.it/BowieStatueCampaign

To coincide with the David Bowie Friars Aylesbury statue Kickstarter campaign passing the £25,000 mark it has been announced that HOLY HOLY featuring Tony Visconti, Woody Woodmansey and Heaven 17’s Glenn Gregory will play Friars Aylesbury on 3 April, 2017, performing The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars in its entirety. DAVID BOWIE AYLESBURY STATUE KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN SOARS PAST £25,000

A BOWIE TRACK WILL BE PLAYED ON THE HOUR, EVERY HOUR, AT RANDOM FROM 8.00AM AND 9.00PM EVERY DAY FOR THE NEXT 100 YEARS ABOVE THE STATUE

HOLY HOLY to perform THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS At FRIARS AYLESBURY – AYLESBURY WATERSIDE THEATRE  - MONDAY 3 APRIL 2017.

SPECIAL BOWIE EVENT AYLESBURY MARKET SQUARE THIS SATURDAY (12 NOV) NOON TO 5PM

To coincide with the David Bowie Friars Aylesbury statue Kickstarter campaign passing the £25,000 mark it has been announced that HOLY HOLY featuring Tony Visconti, Woody Woodmansey and Heaven 17’s Glenn Gregory will play Friars Aylesbury on 3 April next year performing The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars in full.

This will be the first time that original Spiders from Mars drummer Woody Woodmansey has played the Ziggy album in Aylesbury since the classic David Bowie Ziggy show he performed at on 15 July 1972.

The David Bowie Aylesbury Statue Kickstarter campaign has a goal of raising £100,000 by December 6th 2016 to create a stunning statue of David Bowie in Aylesbury’s Market Square. Bowie performed the world debuts of two of the most iconic albums of the twentieth century Hunky Dory and The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars at Friars Aylesbury in 1971/72.

There will be a special Bowie festival taking place under the arches in Aylesbury Market Square this Saturday Nov 12 from 12.00 Noon until 5.00pm playing only Bowie music and providing info about how people can back the Kickstarter Campaign.

Bowie formed the Spiders from Mars (Trevor Bolder, Woody Woodmansey and Mick Ronson) in the tiny Borough Assembly Hall Friars Aylesbury dressing room on September 25th 1971. Aylesbury’s Kris Needs and David Stopps were there when he said, “This was great tonight – let’s form a band and go out and do it properly”.

He also referenced Aylesbury Market Square in the first line of ‘Five Years’ from the Ziggy album “Pushing through the Market Square, so many mothers sighing”. The proposed statue will have state of the art audio enhancement. A Bowie track will be played on the hour, every hour, at random between the hours of 8.00am and 9.00pm every day for the next 100 years. The statue will feature Bowie as Ziggy Stardust but behind will be the other personas that David developed in his astonishing career.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1980358464/david-bowie-statue-aylesbury-market-square-uk

HOLY HOLY’S Tony Visconti worked closely with Bowie throughout his career co-producing with Bowie no less than 13 classic Bowie albums, ‘David Bowie’ (1969), ‘The Man Who Sold The World’ (70), ‘David Live’ (74), ‘Young Americans’ (75), ‘Low’ (77), ‘Heroes’ (77), ‘Stage’ (78), ‘Lodger’ (79), ‘Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) (80), ‘Heathen’ (2002), ‘Reality’ (2003), ‘The Next Day’ (2013) and Bowie’s final album ‘Blackstar’ in 2016.

In 2014 Woody and Tony formed Holy Holy, specifically to perform ‘The Man Who Sold The World’ album live. Tony not only produced this classic 1970 album but also played bass on the album with Woody on drums and the legendary late Mick Ronson on guitar.

The group undertook a short tour in the UK in September 2014 and a larger scale tour of the UK and Japan in the summer of 2015. In January 2016 they toured the east coast of the United States and followed this with a full tour of US and Canadian cities in Spring of 2016.

HOLY HOLY Tickets go on sale this Saturday 12 Nov at 10.00am from Waterside Box Office only (max of 4 per person). Or from 3.00pm on line from ATGtickets.com. http://atgtickets.com/

BBC TWO announces new David Bowie film

Today, BBC TWO announces a new landmark film, David Bowie: The Last Five Years to air in January 2017, produced and directed by Francis Whately as a follow-up to his acclaimed David Bowie: Five Years which was broadcast on BBC TWO in 2013. As with the first film, this new piece will feature a wealth of rare and unseen archive footage and early audio interviews which have never been released before. This includes the original vocal which Bowie recorded for Lazarus, his last release before his death, which has never been heard before.

Additionally, BBC Four will broadcast Bowie at the BBC, a compilation of rarely seen archive exploring Bowie’s incredible career as captured by the BBC from his very first appearance in 1964 to through to his death in 2016. BBC Radio 2 will broadcast a documentary, Life On Mars, presented by Martin Kemp examining the legacy of the song which is widely regarded as Bowie’s masterpiece, featuring unreleased music archive. BBC Radio 6 Music will be asking listeners to vote for their favourite Bowie album and holding a Listening Party for the No 1 choice, and Marc Riley will present a show in tribute to the singer. The programmes will air in January 2017, marking what would have been David Bowie’s 70th birthday and one year on from the legendary musician’s death.

David Bowie: The Last Five Years will focus on the three major projects of Bowie's last five years - the best-selling albums, The Next Day and Blackstar, alongside the musical Lazarus which, following rave reviews and a sold out run ‘off Broadway’, is arriving in London this Autumn. With unprecedented access to Bowie’s closest friends and collaborators this will be an unforgettable tribute to one of the greatest musical icons of modern times.  And it will also be an opportunity to experience some of Bowie’s iconic songs from his incredible back catalogue which will illustrate the continuity of his later work with the rest of his career.

Francis Whately said: “I always hoped that I would make another film about Bowie as we were only able to scratch the surface in the first film, but I just didn’t expect it to be this soon. However, looking at Bowie’s extraordinary creativity during the last five years of his life has allowed me to re-examine his life’s work and move beyond the simplistic view that his career was simply predicated on change - Bowie the chameleon… ‘ch ch ch changes’ etc.  Instead, I would like to show how the changes were often superficial, but the core themes in his work were entirely consistent – Alienation, Mortality and Fame.”

Adam Barker, Channel Executive for BBC TWO and BBC Four, said: “BBC TWO is thrilled to have commissioned this unique documentary chronicling the most recent achievements of one of the most significant figures in the history of music.”

The original band members of The Next Day album will be reunited alongside Bowie's long-time producer Tony Visconti to recreate the production process for key tracks on the album. There will be interviews with the video directors and the stars of Bowie's last videos, including the Stars (Are Out Tonight), exploring how the album consolidates Bowie's back catalogue with thematic and musical references to his past, whilst at the same time being a triumphant return to form after a ten year hiatus.

For the album, Blackstar, the film visits the famous 55 bar in New York where Bowie first encountered the jazz quartet who would become the musicians for this, one of his most innovative and original albums. Whately explores how the record was to become Bowie's stunning epitaph. And the film features exclusive access to the writer, director and cast of Lazarus and will tell the story of the project from its inception through to the opening night, showing Bowie’s unwavering commitment to the project right up to the very end of his life. Lazarus illustrates the connections between the play and David's own career and explores the extent to which it is possible to draw a comparison between the main character, Thomas Jerome Newton, first introduced in the 'Man Who Fell to Earth' film, and Bowie himself. The play includes a reworking of some of Bowie’s greatest hits including Heroes, Life on Mars and Changes. Whately is given access to film the rehearsals in London plus a complete performance.

Bowie at the BBC on BBC Four is a compilation of clips from the BBC archive giving an overview of Bowie’s extraordinary career from 1964 to 2016. It will feature legendary and rarely seen performances, interviews and insights into his many personas. From a 17-year-old David Jones interviewed by Cliff Michelmore in 1964, onto 1973 when as David Bowie he gave his seminal Top of the Pop’s performance of Starman, and to 2000 when he performed at Glastonbury. The programme includes other classic Top of the Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test performances of Bowie singing Queen Bitch, Oh you Pretty Things and The Jean Genie, and looks at Bowie the actor with interviews about his roles in The Elephant Man, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence and Absolute Beginners. Bowie at the BBC will give an insight into the one of the most significant performers of the 70s and beyond with interviews and performances showing just how innovative, funny, surprising and influential Bowie and his many personae were to generations.

For BBC Radio 2, in Life On Mars (Monday 9 January, 10pm), Martin Kemp explores this 1971 song of Bowie’s which is widely regarded as his masterpiece. With access to exclusive unreleased music archive, the documentary examines how Life On Mars came into being and the significance of the lyrics. Kemp explores whether it could be seen as the musician’s legacy song – the one for which he will be most remembered. The programme will feature never before broadcast archive recordings, Bowie’s original piano and voice demo and further archive, and hears from those who worked closely with Bowie to create this memorable recording. These include original producer Ken Scott, former EMI A&R Tris Penna, Rick Wakeman, Mick Rock (who shot the video),  and archive interviews with Bowie. Produced by Sue Clark Productions.

Martin Kemp said: “In celebration of the genius that is David Bowie, I'm excited and honoured to present this programme 'Life on Mars?' in January for Radio 2 to mark what would have been his 70th birthday. For me Bowie was a great inspiration and influence on my own music career.”

On BBC Radio 6 Music, on what would have been his 70th birthday Sunday 8 January, there will be a Now Playing special with presenter Tom Robinson. 6 Music will also be asking listeners to vote for their favourite ever Bowie album, from a Top 10 shortlist compiled by the station’s presenters. On Monday 9 January, the number one album will be played in full at 10pm in a 6 Music Listening Party presented by Gideon Coe. On Tuesday 10 January (the first anniversary of Bowie’s death) Marc Riley will present a tribute show to him. 6 Music will also broadcast again Iggy Pop’s Bowie special in which Iggy devoted a whole show to his friend and collaborator, playing his favourite Bowie tracks and chatting about the times their paths crossed over the years.

Paul Rodgers, Head of Programmes for BBC Radio 6 Music, said: “I remember the sadness people felt in January 2016 when we learned of David Bowie’s death. It feels appropriate that the 6 Music community should commemorate and celebrate his life and legacy one year on.”

“I’m so high it makes my brain whirl”

Congratulations are due to Michael C Hall (Newton), Michael Esper (Valentine) and Sophia Anne Caruso (Girl) and the New York cast of the Lazarus Musical, with the news that their Lazarus Cast Album has entered the UK’s Official Vinyl Album Chart at #1 and #10 on the Official Albums Chart Top 100 (includes all formats). We must also congratulate Henry Hey, orchestrator, arranger and musical director for Lazarus, for his brilliant work on these new arrangements of Bowie’s music.

As you know, Donny McCaslin and his band are the musicians behind the sound of David Bowie’s ★ album. They are also the band that played on the four Bowie originals, which appear on the Lazarus Cast Album as an extra disc.

Aside from Lazarus topping the chart, ★ and Hunky Dory remain in the Top 40.

Iman shares STC award with David

“Children round the world, put camel shit on the walls, They're making carpets on treadmills, or garbage sorting. And it’s no game”

Iman received the Voice Award at the Save the Children 4th annual Illumination Gala in New York on Tuesday (October 25).

In an emotional acceptance speech, she chose to share the award and had this to say regarding David’s charitable work: “My husband, David, was also a staunch supporter of human rights and devoted an innumerable amount of time and resources, which he chose to do anonymously. I share this award with him, knowing that the fire in him lit the fire in me, and vice versa. Good partnerships have a habit of doing that. So while this work is never done, I'm grateful and humbled by this recognition.”

On the red carpet, Iman talked of the importance of Save the Children, beyond the basic needs of food, shelter and education: “When you are a refugee and you are in other places and when you're in a war torn country, you really are stripped away of your own dignity. So with the Save the Children, that's what you get. You get your own dignity back.”

View the speech here.

Other attendees included the evening’s host, actress Jennifer Garner, singer Jennifer Nettles and Dakota Fanning who is an artist ambassador for the organization. The annual gala raises money “to give more children a stronger start in life by helping end preventable maternal, newborn and child deaths and by supporting early childhood education.”

David Bowie is pictured here at a press conference prior to his 50th birthday party show: a sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden on January 9th, 1997. The show was filmed for pay-per-view television, with proceeds from both the concert and broadcasts benefiting Save the Children.

Bowie and Viz in Manchester 2002

“See my life in a comic...part 382”

Following Dave Hogan’s picture of David Bowie reading Viz in 1990 that we posted earlier, here’s another shot to prove what a loyal reader David was, taken twelve years later in 2002.

The occasion was Bowie’s visit to Manchester to play the Move festival. While in town he popped into Radio 1 for an interview and bit of a lark around with Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley.

As usual, Riley is acting the goat (or more accurately, a clown), but even his antics couldn’t distract Bowie from Viz.

Silhouettes and Shadows: Dave Hogan

“See my life in a comic”

Rockarchive, in conjunction with Photofusion, launched Silhouettes and Shadows, a David Bowie photo exhibition in Brixton last month. The exhibition is free, but it closes today (October 26).

Before we miss the opportunity, here’s a final exclusive quotation from one of the photographers taking part.

Here’s Dave Hogan, regarding a little bit of silliness from 1990...

“There is a certain protocol when you work with an artist like David Bowie. You're not there to be his new best friend, you're there to record what's going on. So one time on the Sound and Vision Tour we were travelling across Canada via train, rather than flying which he didn’t like, and he came and sat next to me. This put me into a state of panic because I didn't want everybody to think I was trying to be too forward being the new guy on tour.

But it turned out the reason he came to sit next to me was because I was reading Viz. He'd heard of this new adult comic and wanted my copy to read. When my photo appeared in the papers of him reading Viz, they gave him a spoof Bowie column in the next magazine.” - Dave Hogan
