WCIBN? Album Focus: Diamond Dogs - Day 4

“You like me, and I like it all”

As you know by now, In the run up to the release of the David Bowie - Who Can I Be Now? (1974 – 1976) box set, we’re running a weekly album focus, with this week’s album being Diamond Dogs.

Today we’ve made a montage of a handful of the music press adverts, Including the UK Rebel Rebel 45, UK Diamond Dogs single and the American advert for 1984. The other two are both US adverts for the album.

Though Rebel Rebel was a top five hit in the UK, the Diamond Dogs single didn’t worry the Top 20 and 1984 in America was met with similar indifference from record buyers.

However, the album itself reached #1 in the UK and #5 in the US. The UK position won’t have been hampered by Chris Charlesworth’s full-page Melody Maker review, from which, this excerpt:

“The overall effect from the album is that Bowie is more concerned with good production than ever before – and that he’s consciously writing songs suitable for his upcoming stage show.

At least half the tracks on this set are bound to be firm stage favourites, especially if he can recreate the recorded sound.

David has produced another really good record.”

See if you’re in agreement with Mr Charlesworth by having another listen to Diamond Dogs via the Who Can I Be Now? playlist here.

11-page Bowie feature in October UNCUT

“Good god! was it really yesterday?”

The October 2016 issue of Uncut magazine has an 11-page cover feature that shines a light on the evolution of The Gouster/Young Americans, via the more-than-qualified memory banks of Tony Visconti and others, along with some rather tasty pictorial content.

There’s also a brief attempt to second guess what’s next in the world of forthcoming Bowie releases.

Go here for more detail regarding this particular issue: http://bit.ly/UncutOctoberRL

Seu Jorge's Tribute to Bowie American Tour

“There’s a sailor who sings”

In case you missed the announcement on his FB page last week, Seu Jorge will present THE LIFE AQUATIC TOUR, a tribute to DAVID BOWIE in America in November.

Jorge first came to international prominence when he appeared as the enigmatic David Bowie-singing sailor, Pelé dos Santos, in Wes Anderson’s 2004 movie The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou.

In his role as dos Santos, Jorge performed several of Bowie’s songs, including Rebel Rebel, Life On Mars? and Starman, albeit in Portuguese while accompanying himself with just an acoustic guitar.

His The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions album was released on the Hollywood Records label in 2005 and Bowie himself had this to say in the sleeve notes:

"Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese, I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with.”

For the upcoming tour, the Brazilian singer/songwriter will reprise his Portuguese bossa-flavored Bowie covers during a series of Life Aquatic concerts. Images from the film will play on screens shaped like boat sails during the themed shows.

These are the dates for Seu Jorge's The Life Aquatic: A Tribute to David Bowie concerts:

Nov. 4: Faena Theater, Miami Beach

Nov. 7: Union Transfer, Philadelphia

Nov. 8: The Howard Theatre, Washington, DC

Nov. 9: Boston Symphony Hall, Boston

Nov. 11 & 12: Town Hall, New York City

Nov. 14: Theatre Maisonneuve, Montreal

Nov. 15: Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Toronto

Nov. 17: Thalia Hall, Chicago

Nov. 20: Vogue Theatre, Vancouver

Nov. 21: Showbox, Seattle

Nov. 22: Revolution Hall, Portland

Nov. 25: The Regency Ballroom, San Francisco

Nov. 26: The Theatre at Ace Hotel, Los Angeles

Stay tuned for tour updates.

View Geoff MacCormack’s Bowie photos

“I give my, complete attention to a very good friend of mine...”

For those of you that haven’t already stumbled upon it, Geoff MacCormack has recently launched his own site of just a few of the pictures he took of his old mucker, David Bowie.

You all know Geoff’s story as David’s travel companion, band member and 'holiday snapper', as he would refer to himself. But if you don’t, you can read that incredible tale on the site and have a browse through some of the most beautiful photographs of David Bowie ever taken, while you’re about it.

Here’s the caption for the main image in our montage...

David Bowie: Fenton Lake, New Mexico, 1975.

This photo was taken when David had just finished shooting a gruelling scene in The Man Who Fell To Earth where his character Thomas Jerome Newton is vivisected by government scientists in order to find out who or what he is.  There is something of a Charlotte Rampling look about this shot.

As you may have already worked out, the other two pictures are of David and Geoff, around forty years apart.

Check out the site here:

WCIBN? Album Focus: Diamond Dogs - Day 3

“Hunt you to the ground they will, mannequins with kill appeal”

In the run up to the release of the David Bowie - Who Can I Be Now? (1974 – 1976) box set, we’re running a week by week album focus for the LPs contained within it.

This week we’re looking at Diamond Dogs and today we’re picking up from yesterday, with a look at another artwork created for the album by Guy Peellaert.

The artwork we’re talking about was apparently produced originally for the inner gatefold of the sleeve. In the event a photomontage of a cityscape by Leee Black Childers was used instead.

Once again the painting Peellaert produced was based on photographs by Terry O'Neill of Bowie and a leaping dog, the iconic shot in our montage is from the same session.

The Peellaert image was reproduced as a limited edition poster by Mainman and sold through the Bowie fanclub in the mid 70s, along with the more familiar cover art, which was even more heavily censored than the actual sleeve.

The other inset picture in our montage is of Peellaert presenting Bowie with the first version of the artwork, soon after completion.

Meanwhile don’t forget you can listen to Diamond Dogs via the Who Can I Be Now? playlist here.

WCIBN? Album Focus: Diamond Dogs - Day 2

“Bow-wow, woof woof, bow-wow, wow”

In the run up to the release of the David Bowie - Who Can I Be Now? (1974 – 1976) box set, we’re running a week by week album focus for the LPs contained within it.

This week we’re looking at Diamond Dogs and today we’re specifically looking at the version of the sleeve that some didn’t want us to see at all.

One of the plaudits received for last year’s Five Years box set was the attention to detail in the reproduction of the album covers. Generally the UK versions were the starting point, but sometimes the American versions of the sleeves had something slightly more desirable going for them.

Diamond Dogs is a case in point, as it was the US version of this particular sleeve which was withdrawn on account of the immodest prominence of the hounds doo dah.

Pictured here are the original sleeve (top) and the new Parlophone reproduction, which favours the same image as the original of the uncensored pooch, before the offending part was airbrushed out.

The sleeve art was created by Guy Peellaert, based on photographs by Terry O'Neill of Bowie’s top half and the lower half of an unnamed canine.

More on this story over the coming days, meanwhile don’t forget the Who Can I Be Now? playlist here.

TMWFTE soundtrack issued after 40 years

“I found my thrill”

To celebrate STUDIOCANAL’s 40th Anniversary 4K release, UMC (Universal Music Catalogue) will be releasing for the very first time in any format, the original movie soundtrack containing music by John Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas fame (who composed specifically for the film), and Stomu Yamash’ta.

Back in 1976 when the Pan paperback of the Walter Tevis novel The Man Who Fell To Earth was published, the back cover stated: Album available on RCA.

The reason that record never came to be is a whole other story, and one that is covered in the beautiful 48-page hardback book that accompanies this upcoming deluxe double disc release. A double CD is due on September 9th with the deluxe 2CD/2LP box set due November 18th.

Fans have attempted to compile their own version of the soundtrack over the years (Hi Bert and Ole), but have never managed to source everything.

However, due to the recent discovery of lost master tapes it is now possible to present the original recordings on CD and aforementioned dual format CD/Vinyl Deluxe Box. The box features a reproduction of the original UK poster and a 48-page hardback book with rare photos and a new essay about the film from Paolo Hewitt. The book also contains enlightening notes from the movie’s editor Graeme Clifford who reveals that he used Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of The Moon as a temporary soundtrack whilst working on the film.

This UMC version makes available for the first time ever, all of the Stomu Yamash’ta and John Phillips compositions used in The Man Who Fell To Earth, along with many other of John Phillips’ pieces that didn't make the final cut of the film.

Gavin Evans’ Trinity Exhibition in Berlin

“Way back in West Berlin” *

Following today’s opening event, Gavin Evans’ The Trinity Exhibition (Bowie, Pop and Cave) opens properly tomorrow, August 14th.

It’s likely that you know more of Gavin's Bowie pictures than you realise. See a small sample for yourself here.

Here’s the official blurb for the exhibition, which runs right through till October 30th...

David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Nick Cave - three Zeitguys that Berlin changed and changed Berlin photographed by Gavin Evans.

“British photographer Gavin Evans doesn't just take portraits, he captures his subjects unlike anyone else.

The illustrious trinity of Bowie, Iggy and Cave put Berlin on the musical map long before techno became the reason to visit the city. It is this very trinity of remarkable artists which connect Gavin Evans to Berlin - he photographed them all.” - Mark Reeder, Music Producer/B-Movie

Check out the FB event page here.

Also, read this interview with Gavin, wherein he talks about working with DB.

* Today’s lyric quotation is actually from the Iggy Pop song, Fall In Love With Me, the closing track from Iggy’s classic 1977 album, Lust For Life.

The song was co-written by Iggy Pop/David Bowie/Hunt Sales/Tony Sales. Fraction fans may like to note that that’s three quarters of Tin Machine.

Bowie, Pop and engineer Colin Thurston produced Lust for Life under the pseudonym Bewlay Bros., and it was recorded at Hansa Tonstudios, West Berlin, Germany.

Cat Russell’s DB Deep Cut Of The Day

“It’s Monday”

As you are no doubt aware, from 2002 through 2004, Catherine Russell worked with David Bowie as a band member, providing backing vocals and featured contributions on guitar, keyboard and percussion for Bowie’s Heathen Tour and A Reality Tour.

Cat is a very successful contemporary jazz and blues vocalist in her own right, so when we asked her to choose a track for DB Deep Cut Of The Day, we suspected she may opt for one of Bowie’s more jazz-flavoured recordings.

But instead she went for the superb guitar-heavy 1977 track, Joe The Lion, from the "Heroes" album, which was partly inspired by performance artist Chris Burden’s, 1974 piece, Trans-Fixed.

Here she explains how she made her selection...

You know, when we were in rehearsals for the Heathen tour, I combed DB’s catalogue listening to stuff I’d never heard. I found Joe The Lion and listened to it several times in a row for days and weeks on end.

I just did this again for the past few days. I LOVE THIS TRACK !!!! It reminds me why I love rock 'n' roll in the first place. Why I loved rock 'n' roll as a kid. Why it made me feel included, when I felt like an outsider. All the reasons why I love DB’s music. Everyone can express themselves through the music at the same time.

I love DB's inspired and partly improvised lyric over the conversation between Carlos and Robert Fripp’s guitars, against George Murray’s bass line and Dennis Davis’ drumming! It’s brilliant! Wild and sexy.

Even though it was made in Berlin, it reminds me of what New York night life was like in the '70s and '80s, when New York streets were dangerous and vibrant. Much of my teenage life was formed on those streets.

I could go on, but I think I'll just listen to the song again......

Thanks Catherine, great choice. And as Cat suggests, listen to the song again, here.

Last chance to see David Jones’ Crucifixion in London

“Hanging by the cross and nail...”

Hope the headline wasn’t too misleading, but if you haven’t yet attended Sotheby’s Bowie/Collector London highlights preview exhibition, you have until next Tuesday, August 9th, to get to it.

Of course, the David Jones Crucifixion we’re referencing isn't anything Bowie himself created, but rather just one of the pieces from his art collection going under the hammer at Sotheby's in November.

You can see the picture in the background behind Gavin Evans’ iconic shot of Bowie and here’s the accompanying caption...

David Jones (1895-1974)

CRUCIFIXION

pencil and watercolour

23.5 by 16.5cm.; 9¼ by 6½in.

Executed circa 1922.

£5,000-7,000

With the same name and the same South London origins as David Bowie, David Jones similarly explored the relationship between art and language. Author of the epic war poem In Parenthesis 1937, admired by the likes of W. H. Auden and T. S. Eliot, Jones was invalided out of military service after being shot at the Battle of the Somme. Although a master of many media, Jones is especially admired as a watercolourist and printmaker. A troubled and reclusive character, Jones created Crucifixion one year after his conversion to Roman Catholicism.

Coincidentally, David Jones died in 1974, the same year that Chris Burden’s own 'crucifixion' on a Volkswagen Beetle was unveiled. As we mentioned yesterday, the piece entitled 'Trans-Fixed' was referenced in the Bowie song, Joe The Lion.

Anyway, here’s the Bowie/Collector highlights preview exhibition and auction schedule:

Preview World Tour:

London: 20 July-9 August

Los Angeles: 20-21 September

New York: 26-29 September

Hong Kong: 12-15 October

The Exhibition:

Bowie/Collector: 1–10 November, Sotheby’s New Bond Street London

The Auctions:

Part I: Modern & Contemporary Art, Evening Auction, 10 November

Part II: Modern & Contemporary Art, Day Auction, 11 November

Part III: Post-Modernist Design: Ettore Sottsass and the Memphis Group, 11 November

If you can’t attend any of the above, you can glean lots of information regarding the collection here.
