Hear live Rock ‘n’ Roll With Me 45 at UNCUT

“While tens of thousands found me in demand...”

UNCUT magazine in the UK has posted a version of Rock ‘n’ Roll With Me online, that hasn’t had a public airing for over forty years.

Released as a promo 7" to American radio stations in September, 1974, this is the 'Short Version' single edit of the longer David Live track.

Originally recorded for Diamond Dogs, Rock ‘n’ Roll With Me was “accidentally” co-written with Warren Peace (Geoff MacCormack), who is pictured with David in our montage.

Geoff explains the genesis of the song at David’s Oakley Street home...

“The ground floor housed a large kitchen; the first floor a double lounge area with a grand piano at one end and a television at the other; the other floors above contained various bedrooms, an office and a music room with an upright piano. It was on the upright that I accidentally wrote a song with David.

One evening I had nothing to do and nobody to play with so I thought I’d go and annoy David. When I got to Oakley Street he was enjoying a short break from writing. He was stuck on a song idea so we made some coffee and chewed the fat.

After a while, just for something to do, I decided to tinkle the upright’s ivories. I played this half-arsed melody I had devised and David came over and asked me to play it again. I was fully aware that it was no masterpiece but duly obliged. ‘Let's have a go,’ he said. We swapped places and he began to play my little tune. After a couple of run-throughs, and to my amazement, he ran through my little bit and straight into a killer chorus that went, ‘When you rock ‘n’ roll with me, there’s no one else I’d rather be...’

It was about this time that I changed my name to Warren Peace, partly because I thought it a good name for an impostor, and partly because it felt like I was the last person in London or New York without an alias. That’s how my name appears on the credits.”

The track will appear on Re:Call 2 the compilation of single versions and non-album B-sides (which coincidentally features a wonderful shot by Geoff of David in the studio on its cover), from the forthcoming Who Can I Be Now? (1974 – 1976) box set.

We will be posting more exclusive content from the box over the coming weeks, but meanwhile go here for the full list of contents.

Who Can I Be Now? (1974 – 1976) details

“Putting on a face that’s new”

As we mentioned yesterday, the follow up to Parlophone’s award-winning box set, David Bowie - Five Years (1969 – 1973), will be David Bowie - Who Can I Be Now? (1974 – 1976), which will be released on September 23rd.

Aside from the box cover and contents pictured here, there is detail from the hardback book contained in the set, in the form of a hand-written note by David Bowie pertaining to the original intended content of 'THE GOUSTER'.

We will be posting more exclusive content from the box over the coming weeks, but meanwhile here’s the full list of contents.

DAVID BOWIE - ‘WHO CAN I BE NOW? (1974 – 1976)’

The 2nd IN A SERIES OF DAVID BOWIE BOX SETS - RELEASED 23RD SEPTEMBER, 2016

CD, DIGITAL AND AUDIOPHILE VINYL BOX SETS FEATURE THE PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED ALBUM ‘THE GOUSTER’

22nd July, 2016 London

Parlophone Records are proud to announce DAVID BOWIE ‘WHO CAN I BE NOW? (1974 – 1976)’ the second in a series of box sets spanning his career from 1969.

The follow up to the awarding winning and critically acclaimed DAVID BOWIE ‘FIVE YEARS (1969 – 1973)’ will be released on 23rd September and will contain the previously unreleased album from 1974 called ‘THE GOUSTER’.

The twelve CD box, thirteen-piece vinyl set and digital download features the material officially released by Bowie during the so-called ‘American’ phase of his career from 1974 to 1976.

The box set, which is named after a track recorded in 1974 but not officially released until the 1990’s, includes ‘DIAMOND DOGS’, ‘DAVID LIVE’ (in original and 2005 mixes), ‘YOUNG AMERICANS’ and ‘STATION TO STATION’ (in original and 2010 mixes) as well as ‘THE GOUSTER’, ‘LIVE NASSAU COLISEUM 76’ and a new compilation ‘RE:CALL 2’ a collection of single versions and non-album b-sides.

All of the formats include tracks that have never before appeared on CD/vinyl/digitally as well as new remasters.

Exclusive to each of the box sets is the previously unreleased as a complete album ‘THE GOUSTER’ that was recorded at Sigma Sound, Philadelphia in 1974 and produced by Tony Visconti. The album was mixed and mastered before David decamped to New York to work with John Lennon and Harry Maslin on what became the ‘YOUNG AMERICANS’ album. ‘THE GOUSTER’ contains three previously unreleased mixes of ‘Right’, ‘Can You Hear Me’ and ‘Somebody Up There Likes Me’.

For the 2016 release, Tony Visconti has overseen the mastering from the original tapes and photos taken by Eric Stephen Jacobs have been put together for the sleeve based around one of David’s original concepts for the album.

Also exclusive to the CD, vinyl, standard digital and MFiT box sets will be the remastered ‘DAVID LIVE (original mix)’, the 2010 Harry Maslin mix of ‘STATION TO STATION’ (previously only available on an audio only DVD in 5.1 and stereo as part of the ‘STATION TO STATION’ Deluxe box set in 2010) and ‘RE:CALL 2’.

This new compilation features the original single mix of ‘Rebel Rebel’, which has only featured on a 40th anniversary picture disc in 2014 since its original release on single in 1974, and a previously unreleased on CD Australian single edit of ‘Diamond Dogs’, the only place in the world that this edit was issued. Also appearing on CD for the first time is the single edit of the live version of ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll With Me’, which was issued to radio stations in the U.S. to help promote the ‘DAVID LIVE’ album.

‘RE:CALL 2’ features newly originated artwork with 1975 in-studio images from the ‘STATION TO STATION’ recording sessions by David’s friend and backing vocalist Geoff MacCormack aka Warren Peace.

The alternative cover for the 2010 mix of ‘STATION TO STATION’ by Harry Maslin, features the originally intended colour sleeve for the album that never got further than a few colour proofs and was replaced by the more familiar black and white image.

The vinyl box set has the same content as the CD set and is pressed on audiophile quality 180g vinyl.

The box set’s accompanying book, 128 pages in the CD box and 84 in the vinyl set, will feature rarely seen and previously unpublished photos by photographers including Eric Stephen Jacobs, Tom Kelley, Geoff MacCormack, Terry O’Neill, Steve Schapiro, and many others as well as historical press reviews and technical notes about the albums from producers Tony Visconti and Harry Maslin.

The CD box set will include faithfully reproduced mini-vinyl versions of the original albums and the CDs will be gold coloured rather than the usual silver.

Say hello to The Gouster

“Can I be real?”

The follow up to Parlophone’s award-winning box set, David Bowie - Five Years (1969 – 1973), will be David Bowie - Who Can I Be Now? (1974 – 1976). (More of which, later)

Exclusive to the set is The Gouster, which is previously unreleased as a complete album. Featured on the sleeve for this box set version, is a previously unpublished picture from the original photo session for the album.

Here’s how The Gouster’s tracklisting looked before it morphed into Young Americans.

Side 1

1. John, I’m Only Dancing (Again)

2. Somebody Up There Likes Me

3. It’s Gonna Be Me

Side 2

1. Who Can I Be Now?

2. Can You Hear Me

3. Young Americans

4. Right

As we say, watch out for full details and the release date of David Bowie - Who Can I Be Now? (1974 – 1976) very soon.

We’ll leave you with an excerpt from Tony Visconti's excellent notes on the album, taken from the box set book.

“Gouster was a word unfamiliar to me but David knew it as a type of dress code worn by African American teens in the ‘60’s, in Chicago. But in the context of the album its meaning was attitude, an attitude of pride and hipness. Of all the songs we cut we were enamored of the ones we chose for the album that portrayed this attitude.

David had a long infatuation with soul as did I. We were fans of the TV show Soul Train. We weren’t ‘young, gifted and black’ but we sure as hell wanted to make a killer soul album, which was quite insane, but pioneers like the Righteous Brothers were there before us.

So ‘The Gouster’ began with the outrageous brand new, funkafied version of David’s classic ‘John, I’m Only Dancing’, a single he wrote and recorded in 1972, only this time our version sounded like it was played live in a loft party in Harlem and he added (Again) to the title. It wasn’t the two and a half minute length of the original either.

We maxed out at virtually seven minutes! With the time limitations of vinyl (big volume drop with more than 18 minutes a side) we could only fit two other long songs on side one, ‘Somebody Up There Likes Me’ and ‘It’s Gonna Be Me’ both about six and a half minute songs. We had hit the twenty-minute mark. Technically that worked because ‘It’s Gonna Be Me’ had lots of quiet sections where the record groove could be safely made narrower and that would preserve the apparent loudness of side one.

Side two also hit the twenty-minute mark with ‘Can You Hear Me’ saving the day with its quiet passages. Forty minutes of glorious funk, that’s what it was and that’s how I thought it would be.”

Exhibition/auction of Bowie’s art collection

“Look at this, then look at us”

David Bowie’s Personal Art Collection to be Unveiled for the First Time

Important Paintings by 20th-Century Masters including Basquiat, Hirst and Auerbach to Lead a Major 10-Day Exhibition and Auction at Sotheby’s in London

Musician, actor, icon — David Bowie was for almost 50 years one of the most recognised and revered artists in the world, his influence transcending music to shape the wider culture of our time. His life as an art collector, however, was something he kept almost entirely hidden from public view. Now, for the first time, this little-known side of Bowie will be fully revealed.

“Eclectic, unscripted, understated: David Bowie’s collection offers a unique insight into the personal world of one of the 20th century’s greatest creative spirits.” - Oliver Barker, Chairman, Sotheby’s Europe.

In November this year, Sotheby’s will stage Bowie/Collector – a three-part sale that includes a selection of around 400 items from the private collection of David Bowie. At its heart will be Bowie’s collection of Modern and Contemporary British art – a richly stimulating group of over 200 works by many of the most important British artists of the 20th century, including Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland, Frank Auerbach and Damien Hirst. Bowie’s famously inquisitive mind also led him to Outsider Art, Surrealism, Contemporary African art and, not least, to the work of the eccentric Italian designer Ettore Sottsass and the Memphis group. This is a collection put together with great thoughtfulness on the basis not of reputation but of Bowie’s highly personal, intellectual response to each artist’s individual vision.

From 1–10 November, Bowie’s private collection will be exhibited at Sotheby’s New Bond Street galleries in London, giving fans, art historians and collectors a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to immerse themselves in the art and objects that informed his private world.

The landmark November exhibition will be preceded by a series of previews around the world, starting with a three-week exhibition of selected works in London this summer, from 20 July until 9 August. Further exhibitions will follow in Los Angeles, New York and Hong Kong. The sale catalogue will be available in early October. Register for a copy here: sothebys.com/BowieCollector

A spokesperson for the Estate of David Bowie said:

“David’s art collection was fuelled by personal interest and compiled out of passion. He always sought and encouraged loans from the collection and enjoyed sharing the works in his custody. Though his family are keeping certain pieces of particular personal significance, it is now time to give others the opportunity to appreciate – and acquire – the art and objects he so admired.”

Swipe/scroll (or click on the little dots) for a glimpse inside the collection.

“Art was, seriously, the only thing I’d ever wanted to own. It has always been for me a stable nourishment. I use it. It can change the way I feel in the mornings. The same work can change me in different ways, depending on what I’m going through.” - DAVID BOWIE quoted in The New York Times, 1998

Preview World Tour:

London: 20 July-9 August

Los Angeles: 20-21 September

New York: 26-29 September

Hong Kong: 12-15 October

The Exhibition:

Bowie/Collector: 1–10 November, Sotheby’s New Bond Street London

The Auctions:

Part I: Modern & Contemporary Art, Evening Auction, 10 November

Part II: Modern & Contemporary Art, Day Auction, 11 November

Part III: Post-Modernist Design: Ettore Sottsass and the Memphis Group, 11 November

Bowie & the Art World

The depth of Bowie’s engagement with the art world cannot be overemphasised. He was an artist, critic, patron, publisher, curator and magazine editor, with London – and Modern British art – at the heart of this passion. In 1994 – in a characteristically unorthodox move for a rock superstar – he joined an invitation only academic coterie on the editorial board of Modern Painters magazine, for which he interviewed the likes of Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin. In 1998, he launched the art-book publishing company 21 alongside Karen Wright, then editor of Modern Painters, the gallerist Bernard Jacobson and Sir Timothy Sainsbury.

His time at 21 is best remembered for perhaps the most infamous hoax in recent art history, when Bowie hosted an elaborate party at Jeff Koons’ Manhattan studio for the launch of a book celebrating the life and work of a mysterious artist named Nat Tate, a wholly fictional creation of his friend, the novelist William Boyd.

Bowie painted throughout his life and was immersed in the artistic communities not only of London, but also of New York and Berlin. He first met Andy Warhol at the legendary ‘Factory’ studio in New York in 1971; and was critically acclaimed for his portrayal of the American Pop pioneer in Julian Schnabel’s 1996 biopic, Basquiat.

The Collection in Focus

Simon Hucker, Senior Specialist in Modern & Post-War British Art at Sotheby’s, said: “As a collector, Bowie looked for artists with whom he felt some connection, and for works that had the power to move or inspire him. This is what led him to British art of the early and mid-20th century in particular, which, of course, also led him home.”

Born and raised in South London, it is perhaps no surprise that Bowie was drawn to chroniclers of the capital’s streets such as Harold Gilman, Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff, whose tutor and inspiration, David Bomberg, Bowie also collected in depth. Away from the city, the British landscape was also a constant source of fascination for Bowie, represented here by the St Ives school and later post-war and contemporary painters such as Ivon Hitchens and John Virtue.

Bowie’s collecting was by no means limited to British art: from early century pioneers such as Marcel Duchamp to Jean-Michel Basquiat (represented in the summer London preview by his 1984 masterpiece Air Power), to Contemporary African art and ‘Outsider’ artists from the Gugging Institute in Vienna, the collection is truly breathtaking in its scope, encompassing paintings, drawings, sculpture, prints and photographs. Set to be unveiled in its entirety in the coming weeks and months, it reveals a collector of far-reaching interests, intellectual rigour and subtle vision.

Bowie was also a voracious collector of the work of Ettore Sottsass and his revolutionary Memphis Design group.

Cécile Verdier, Co-Head of 20th Century Design at Sotheby’s, said:

“The works produced by the historical avant-garde design collaborative Memphis Milano, led by Ettore Sottsass, could not have found a more receptive and tuned-in audience than David Bowie. This is design with no limits and no boundaries. When you look at a piece of Memphis design, you see their unconventionality, the kaleidoscope of forms and patterns; the vibrant contrasting colours that really shouldn’t work but really do.”

Further information on all aspects of the collection will be made available in the coming months.

“I’ve always found that I collect. I’m a collector. I always just seemed to collect personalities, ideas…” - DAVID BOWIE

The Man Who Fell To Earth will also be released on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on 10th October by STUDIOCANAL and is part of the ‘Vintage Classics collection’ – showcasing iconic British films, all fully restored and featuring brand new extra content.

Restored by Deluxe London, the restoration of The Man Who Fell To Earth is based on a 4K scan of the original camera negative, followed by a full 4K workflow, with the approval of cinematographer Anthony Richmond and with the blessing of Nic Roeg.

As well as the main poster artwork, there will be a limited edition poster to celebrate the release made available through various promotions and competitions. (See blue version in montage)

Bowie is magnificent in the film as Thomas Jerome Newton, a humanoid alien who comes to Earth from a distant planet on a mission to take water back to his home planet, which is in the midst of a catastrophic drought. Bowie’s performance is timeless and that’s not to mention him looking absolutely incredible throughout...with and without human disguise.

Full details of the DVD/BD release, including a special Collector’s Edition, will follow shortly.

The film will also be released in the US and Germany, stay tuned for more information.

10 out of 10 for BAAL in UNCUT

“Ziggy played...banjo”

We told you about the release of Dissent & Disruption: The Complete Alan Clarke at the BBC, earlier in the year.

Contained within the set is the BBC adaptation of Baal starring David Bowie, which was first broadcast in 1982.

Damien Love has posted his ten out of ten review of BAAL over on UNCUT and here follows an excerpt from it.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

“When Clarke first conceived of filming the play, in collaboration with Brecht scholar John Willet, he considered Steven Berkoff for the role. It was Willett who suggested Bowie, who, when the programme was recorded in summer 1981, had not long completed his run as The Elephant Man on the American stage. He brings lessons learned there, as well with Lindsay Kemp and, of course, stalking stages as Ziggy and The Duke (plus, it should be said, the beautiful annunciation he brought to his Peter And The Wolf narration).

Clarke mounts the piece with a degree of stylisation that terrifies current British TV. Intercut with abstract split-screen monologues and songs, the cast perform as though in a live performance against huge, detailed sets erected as frieze-like tableaux, the camera usually at a distance – as if, indeed, you were in the stalls viewing a theatre stage. A filthy, snaggletoothed scum-seer, Bowie himself suggests an expressionist woodcut come to life, yet exudes a fitting naturalism the cast around him avoids.

He clearly responded to the project. To mark its broadcast, Bowie decided to cut a 7-inch EP of the five Brecht songs he performs in the drama, acting as his own Greek chorus. In the TV version, he accompanies himself with bare plucks at the banjo he perpetually clutches. For the Baal EP, however, Bowie returned to Germany’s Hansa studio with Tony Visconti and 15 Berlin players, the last time he would record beside the Wall. The record has become a semi-obscure curio, but two songs, “The Drowned Girl” and “Remembering Marie A”, rank among Bowie’s most affecting 1980s recordings.”

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

You can read the full review here.

The EP Damien references was re-released as a digital download in 2007 and if you‘re not familiar with the recordings start with the delightful Remembering Marie A now and check out the rest of the EP while you‘re about it. A true hidden gem if ever there was one.

Dissent & Disruption: The Complete Alan Clarke at the BBC is available on both Blu-ray and DVD now.

Two live Ziggy albums reissued today

“You're the blessed, we're The Spiders From Mars”

We told you about these releases back in April, but to recap: the two live albums that were housed in the David Bowie (Five Years 1969 – 1973) box set (Live Santa Monica ’72 & Ziggy Stardust Motion Picture Soundtrack), are issued via Parlophone today as heavyweight 180g vinyl editions.

This is to accommodate fans who want these classic live albums but that didn't get the Five Years box set or the original limited editions when EMI issued them.

The vinyl that was exclusive to the David Bowie (Five Years 1969 – 1973) box set, The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (2003 Ken Scott Mix) and Re:Call 1 will not be issued separately.

If you don’t already have them, you can order both via the following links.

Three days left for charity auction

“I said be careful, his bowtie is really a camera”

On the 44th anniversary of the release of The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, it seems somehow appropriate to mention an event taking place in Heddon Street, the site of the album’s iconic cover shoot.

There has been a plethora of David Bowie photographic exhibitions since January, and you’ve no doubt heard about them all, including this one: David Bowie: Fame, Fashion, Photography.

However, aside from celebrating the life and career of David Bowie via rare and previously unpublished photographs, the primary objective of BowieFFP is to raise money for Cancer Research UK, by auctioning off all of the beautiful prints on display, kindly donated by the photographers: Chalkie Davies, Tony McGee and Denis O’Regan.

If you’ve not yet managed to get along, you still have until Sunday. But more importantly, you definitely have plenty of time to view the images online and bid in the auction. The online auction will be open for bids until 6.30pm on June 19th. Go here for links.

If you do still want to visit the physical exhibition (and you should if you can), please choose a time slot and book your free tickets here.

*Today’s featured picture was taken by Chalkie Davies in the studio whilst Labyrinth was being filmed, in 1985.

Tilda Swinton’s CFDA tribute to Bowie

“And so the story goes, they wore the clothes...”

Last night at the CFDA Awards at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York, actress Tilda Swinton paid emotional tribute to David Bowie while collecting the statuette for the BOARD OF DIRECTORS’ TRIBUTE to David Bowie.

Star of Lazarus, Michael C. Hall, performed a visually exciting rendition of Changes with a trio of Ziggyettes...more of which, later.

Tilda read the moving letter to Bowie, introducing it by explaining she was there on behalf of his wife, Iman: “Tonight is David and Iman's 24th wedding anniversary,” She said. “And Iman has asked me to come tonight in her place, to thank you for this great tribute to David, and to send you all her love, and I'm honoured to do so.”

You can watch Tilda’s speech here.

And here’s the correct version of her reading of the letter to David in full (some sites have misreported it):

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Dear Dave,

The CFDA have the great good sense and elegance to tip their caps at you this year.

There's pretty much no year out of the last forty that this would not have been a good idea. But this time around, it feels like an apt opportunity, given this stage in the proceedings, to remind us all how very much a part of us you always were and always will be.

At the request of your beautiful Missus, I've come to collect it for her  -  for you.

These kind people - the fanciest fashion people on the planet - are giving you their highest prize -  their directors' tribute - to honour and to thank you for all the shapes you’ve thrown, from start to finish, through all your years, golden and otherwise, all your changes, ever moving forward, all your colours, all your magic, all your vim and vigour, all your glory, all ways and always.

You checked out early and we are still finding things you left in the drawers and looking for a forwarding address

But you are still hanging signs in the sky, in the trees, for us and we are so grateful for every one.

We want to tell you that we miss you but how very happy we all are that you came by... And that we are getting used to resting on your stardust in your absence.

Once upon a time you gave us a freak for freaks: now and forever more, in our missing you (and this is a good thing), you have brought out the freak in everyone.

You tipped us that wink from the first: one man's freak is another man's free.

Difference and change are all we ever have to rely upon, and always were.

Thank you, chum, for brightening our horizon. For inspiring and exhilarating and enlightening our times. How lucky we are who turned up since you were first here. Thank you for your happiness and your eternal Bona-ness and zhoosh.

You are our hero. Forever and ever.

Everyone says hi.

Love,

Your Tilly

Bowie tune in penultimate Peaky Blinders

“I’ve got drama, can’t be stolen”

You’ve no doubt seen the stories of David Bowie’s love of the BBC 2 TV show, Peaky Blinders.

Bowie’s interest in the original Birmingham gang predates the show and he held a fascination for the distinctive clothes they wore: peaked caps, cravats, bell-bottom trousers with heavy buckled belts and jackets with brass buttons.

The legend (though possibly untrue), that the name Peaky Blinders came from the method the gang used to rob victims of their eyesight (peaked caps with concealed razors), was one of the details that didn’t escape Bowie’s attention.

Self-proclaimed Bowie fan, actor Cillian Murphy, plays the show’s fictional gangland boss, Tommy Shelby. He befriended Bowie and they exchanged gifts, as explained to The Hollywood Reporter by the drama’s creator, Steven Knight, ahead of Thursday’s broadcast.

“Cillian heard that he [Bowie] was a fan. At the end of the first series, Cillian was given the cap he wore throughout the shoot, in a glass case. He smashed the case, sent the cap to Bowie and Bowie sent a photo back of himself with razor blades sewn into the cap. So we contacted his people and asked if he’d like his music on the series and they were really keen. I had someone come to my house to play Blackstar before it was released. They didn’t say anything about his state of health, and a couple of days later it was announced he had died. We continued talking and episode five will have Bowie’s music in it.”

We won’t spoil the surprise for you, but if you miss episode five on Thursday evening (BBC 2 - 21:00), you can catch up on all of the excellent music used throughout the three series so far, here on the dedicated BBC page.

The limited edition vinyl pressing of CHANGESONEBOWIE has entered the UK’s Official Vinyl Album Chart at #1. (27 May 2016 - 02 June 2016)

The following five Bowie albums are currently in the chart, with four of those in the Top 20.

01 - CHANGESONEBOWIE - PARLOPHONE

14 - BLACKSTAR - RCA

17 - HUNKY DORY - PARLOPHONE

18 - THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST - PARLOPHONE

23 - NOTHING HAS CHANGED - THE VERY BEST OF DAVID BOWIE - PARLOPHONE

Check out the current Official Vinyl Album Chart here.

Meanwhile, some bright spark has solved the 'Schrödinger's Cat' dilemma of the black v clear vinyl pressing without opening sealed copies of CHANGESONEBOWIE. Simply shine a strong light source, such as an LED torch, through the back of the sleeve. If the light shines through the vinyl, your record is transparent. Honestly, it works!

Bowie surprise guest at Gilmour gig

“Silhouettes and shadows...”

Around this time exactly ten years ago, people were travelling home from a David Gilmour gig at the Royal Albert Hall in London, having just witnessed a special guest appearance by David Bowie. In the event, that show of May 29th, 2006, would prove to be his last public performance in the UK.

The event was reported the next day by Total Blam Blam on DavidBowie.com. We’ve posted that brief review below.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

“David Bowie's on the phone, dad... ,” my daughter Holly casually announced late yesterday afternoon, “though it’s probably somebody messing around,” she reasonably suspected.

“Blam, what are you up to this evening?” Well, it certainly sounded like HIM. “Erm...nothing,” I spluttered. “Well, I'm doing a bit of an impromptu at the Royal Albert, grab your camera and get over here as soon as you can!” And he wasn't messing around.

I got there in lunatic time and sat through two accomplished sets by David Gilmour and his collection of even more accomplished musicians, who boasted Roxy man Phil Manzanera among their number.

The first set kicked off with the Pink Floyd favourite, Breathe/Time/Breathe (Reprise), and continued with the whole of David Gilmour's latest solo offering On An Island from start to finish.

The unsuspecting audience seemed most appreciative of the vocal contributions from guests David Crosby and Graham Nash and who could fail to be impressed by Robert Wyatt and his distinctive cornet? Little did they know what was to come.

A second set of six Pink Floyd favourites followed, from the sublime ode to Syd Barrett, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, through to the mind-expanding space jam of Echoes...and then they were gone.

So, two whole sets, and no sign of DB. Was he winding me up? There were certainly no whispers of his name from where I sat.

But, in no time at all, the band was back on stage for an encore which kicked off with a quite beautiful Wish You Were Here, followed by a very short interlude of Crosby and Nash's own Find The Cost Of Freedom.

Normally the audience would have expected an end to proceedings round about now, and I'm not sure many of them actually believed Gilmour when he said something along the lines of: “We're not done yet, please welcome our very special guest...David Bowie!”

David bounded on to an immediate standing ovation and was straight into a cracking version of Syd's Arnold Layne...his grey suit and black scarf with crimson top even seemed to echo the hip clobber of the London scene of the time.

The song is well-suited to David's voice, and his love of all things Syd was more than apparent in the brilliant delivery.

The crowd was more animated than at any other point in the evening, but the temperature rose even further in the well sold out hall as the audience recognised the intro to Comfortably Numb, and David took the microphone once again... “Hello. Is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me. Is there anyone home?”

Another superb delivery which saw David vanish into the shadows as Gilmour went in to that epic solo that completes the last few minutes of the song.

Inevitably the news filtered out via mobile phones and message boards...but still people seemed disbelieving until Sailor himself confirmed his appearance shortly afterwards via the BowieNet MBs, thus:

“Great stuff! Gig rumour is true. I had a ball tonight singing with David Gilmour and the band. He invited me up to do Arnold Layne and Uncomfortably Numb. Sailor.” He returned shortly after to say that the deliberate mistake of “Uncomfortably Numb” was “jus my little joke.”

It was great to finally see David sing in this fine old venue...how cool would it be to have a Bowie show there? And no, I'm not hinting at anything...just thinking aloud.

The official David Gilmour site posted a brief mention last night, including this line: “Best-kept secret of the night was the appearance of David Bowie, in the encore section, who gained a standing ovation after his unique renditions of both Arnold Layne and Comfortably Numb. Who knows what new thrills await in the next two days? Keep tuning in for the latest...”

Well, while we're on the subject, I can tell you that DB doesn't plan to join the proceedings again over the next two RAH Gilmour gigs.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

If you've never seen DB’s performance, you can view both songs here on the RAH site.

CHANGESONEBOWIE random vinyl out now

“But it may come clear”

As mentioned on these pages previously, today sees the release of the 40th anniversary edition of CHANGESONEBOWIE.

David Bowie's first ever best of compilation (with tracks from the period 1969 to 1976), was originally released on May 21st, 1976.

The album stayed in the Top 10 for eleven weeks, peaking at #2. Two UK adverts from 1976 are illustrated in our montage.

Unannounced at the time was a mispress of CHANGESONEBOWIE with a reported 1,000 copies containing the 'sax version' of John, I’m Only Dancing, as opposed to the original single mix.

In keeping with the spirit of that, half of this new vinyl pressing is black while the other half is clear. As with the original album, this information is not mentioned on the sleeve, so it is completely random as to which one you end up with.

CHANGESONEBOWIE is out now via Parlophone on 180g heavyweight vinyl, cd and digital formats including Mastered for iTunes.

CHANGESONEBOWIE tracklisiting:

Side 1

Space Oddity

John, I’m Only Dancing

Changes

Ziggy Stardust

Suffragette City

The Jean Genie

Side 2

Diamond Dogs

Rebel Rebel

Duncan Jones on Dad and Baby Jones

“My set is amazing”

Our good friend @Unklerupert has yet again supplied a summary of Duncan Jones’ activities. Including stuff about Dad, Baby “Tusky” and his day job as successful international director.

Over to you Unk... (All bold text is a clickable link and there are lots of links in the following)

#WARCRAFTmovie  #DuncanJones

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Hello! You may recall our last update on all things Duncan Jones back in November 2015. At the time the first trailer for Duncan’s latest film WARCRAFT, a big budget adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment’s massively successful game World of Warcraft, had been released along with the announcement of his next project MUTE, a return to Sci-Fi set in the same fictional universe as Duncan’s debut feature MOON.

A lot has happened since then of course, not the least of which was the passing of Duncan’s father David Bowie on January 10th of this year. Time passes and life continues, and new life comes into being as well. On the 10th of February Duncan announced that he and is wife Rodene were expecting a new Jones. “Circle of life.” as Duncan commented on his Twitter announcement.

Skip forward to now and Duncan and Rodene are quickly approaching the release of both of their new babies, tiny Jones (or “Tusky” as Duncan mentioned as a potential name in a recent interview) and WARCRAFT both being due for release in June! So, it’s a busy time in the Jones house right now. The release of a new film obviously involves a lot of promotion and Duncan has taken it all in his stride, as usual, talking not only about WARCRAFT, but about his hugely influential Dad too.

Speaking to Nicole Evatt, Associated Press, Duncan recalled time spent with his Dad on film sets.

"My dad was obviously prolific in music, but he also acted and I think I had the most fun when we were on film sets... I think I got the bug back then.”

“Because the musical gene did not express itself in the way one might have hoped, my main hobby with my dad was shooting little one-stop animations and I just always carried that interest in film."

"I think as much on the creativity level — his bravery and willingness to try stuff that other people weren't expecting. I did two science-fiction films and then jumped into a video game movie, and now I'm going to go from this behemoth to another tiny, little indie. So just doing what feels right at the moment on a creative level is certainly something I got from him."

Duncan is pictured here on the set of The Man Who Fell To Earth with his Dad and the film’s director, Nicolas Roeg. The colour picture is of Duncan in director mode on the set of WARCRAFT.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Duncan confirmed his Dad had got a chance to see what he’d been working on with WARCRAFT

“Before he passed he got the chance to see an early rough cut, and, you know, he's a dad, so he was proud. He was proud back then and I'm sure he would have been proud of the finished film.”

"He was just excited for me to be branching out and trying out different things. He taught me a lot of things, but one of them was to be brave and to go with what feels right. And for me, you know, having an opportunity to do this felt right.”

WARCRAFT isn’t the only film on Duncan’s mind of course, there is also his much anticipated return to Sci-fi with MUTE which Duncan described to Empire magazine in the UK this month as

“The story of Leo, who’s mute due to a childhood accident. He’s looking for a missing person in mid 21st century Berlin, the Casablanca of the future.”

Talking to Empire about the casting of Alexander Skarsgård as Leo Duncan said

“I think he’ll do a terrific job. Leo is a character who doesn’t talk, so much of the communication is going to be about the nuances of the performance and where I put the camera to pick them up. But it’s also a three hander. The other two character are a pair of buddies who are incredibly talkative, very loquacious and witty. You’re bounced between their two stories, one guy who’s silent and the other who are babbling all the time. So I think it has a nice balance to it.”

Duncan has previously described MUTE as a love letter to Blade Runner and revealed a few more influences to Empire:

“Paul Schrader’s Hardcore meets Robert Altman’s M*A*S*H. It goes very dark, then it also goes very darkly funny. It’s science-fiction urban, so it certainly owes some of it’s influence to Blade Runner. But, in a way, the references to Blade Runner are more superficial.”

The June issues of Empire also exclusively features the first concept art from MUTE over 2 pages, as well as 6 pages on WARCRAFT. Well worth picking up!

With the WARCRAFT release almost upon us, Duncan’s putting in a lot of work on promotion but attention is obviously starting to shift towards the arrival of the baby.

"I'm so excited, our baby is due to arrive within a week or two of the film coming out. I did all the hard work now. It’s a movie, it’s on it’s way, it’ll do it’s own thing. I’ve got this other baby I’ve got to be responsible for and worrying about now. It's going to be a crazy June."

Despite joking about a baby name (“Tusky”) during a very funny interview at PAX EAST, Duncan and Rodene’s baby’s name has not been revealed. Duncan and Rodene do know though whether they are expecting a boy or a girl.

In a very moving moment in this interview with Marc Malkin for E! Duncan revealed:

“We were very fortunate when found out what the gender of our baby was going to be. We were able to get the Doctor to write it on a card, without us seeing, and then I got to spend Christmas with my Dad and he actually told what the gender was going to be.”

Having watched Duncan get back into work after a tough start to the year, I think his Dad would quite rightly be very proud to see how committed and hard working he has been in the build up to WARCRAFT’s release. Duncan’s obviously very proud of what the entire cast and crew have achieved on this film, his enthusiasm and delight at every little detail shines through on every interview you’ll watch over the next couple of weeks. There are a couple you should not miss though.

WARCRAFT Movie Panel with Duncan Jones and Robert Kazinsky (Orgrim Doomhammer).

Duncan & Rodene Jones live on Periscope touring the WARCRAFT press expo at Universal.

Rob Kazinsky’s behind the scenes tour of The Lion’s Pride Inn

The main thing to know, for all you none gamers out there, is that Duncan and the gang have created a film that is for everyone. If you are a World of Warcraft player, there will be tons of call backs to the game that you’ll love. If you’re not a World of Warcraft player, maybe not even heard of it, it doesn’t matter. Let’s all get out to those cinemas and support a unique film maker. Check out the latest WARCRAFT trailer.

WARCRAFT release begins in France, Belgium & The Philippines on the 25th of May with the rest of the world following shortly after, 30th of May in the UK (which is also Duncan’s Birthday!). China 8th June, US 10th June, Japan 1st of July. Full list of release dates on IMDb.

Oh! Another bit of MOON related news, Dark Bunny Tees now have an officially licensed range of MOON gear if you fancy a mooch over on their site :)

If you want to say hi to Duncan, you’ll find him most days over on Twitter.

Keep up to date with further Duncan related news with on Twitter, or Facebook.
