CHANGESONEBOWIE random vinyl due in May

“But it may come clear”

20th May, 2016, marks forty years since David Bowie's first ever best of compilation, CHANGESONEBOWIE (with tracks from the period 1969 to 1976), was released.

The album stayed in the Top 10 for eleven weeks, peaking at #2.

To mark this anniversary CHANGESONEBOWIE is being reissued on 180g heavyweight vinyl, cd and digital formats including Mastered for iTunes.

Half of the limited vinyl will be black while the other half will be clear, this will not be mentioned on the sleeve so it will be completely random as to which one you end up with.

This creates what is possibly the first vinyl equivalent of Schrödinger's cat for collectors who decide to leave their records sealed.

"I believe, I might be of service"

Dave Grohl presented a touching and sensitive version of The Beatles's song Blackbird for the "In Memoriam" section at the Oscars Awards 2016 on Sunday evening.

As he performed, footage of those being remembered played onscreen behind him, with a snippet of Bowie's stylish Zoolander appearance providing today's lyric quotation.

Bowie band members’ post-BRITs tributes

“The band was all together”

Following the Brit Awards 2016 ceremony at the London O2 Arena on Wednesday, The Bowie band, consisting of (in alphabetical order): Sterling Campbell (drums), Gail Ann Dorsey (bass), Mike Garson (piano), Gerry Leonard (guitar), Catherine Russell (keyboards and guitar) and Earl Slick (guitar), took to social media to express their gratitude for having been involved with the Bowie tribute.

Here they are along with Lorde’s comments. Sterling, Gerry and Slicky’s contributions are new and exclusive to this feature...

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Sterling Campbell: I would like to the thank my bandmates and Ella (Lorde) for their dedication in honoring David. I want to give my deepest respect to my Mentor Dennis Davis. He has played such a vital role in my career and I will always be in gratitude to him. To Zack Alford, with whom I grew up and shared a dream together with. To Nile Rodgers for bringing me into David’s life. To all of the Bowie Alumni especially Mick Ronson, Carlos Alomar, George Murray, Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Woody Woodmansey, Trevor Bolder, Tony Visconti and Ken Scott. This is the Core of the Bowie sound and I am honored to have been a part of it.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Gail Ann Dorsey: Beautiful and meaningful words spoken by Annie Lennox and Gary Oldman, two tremendous artists and dear friends of our beloved David Bowie... Performing tonight for the last time with my wonderful Bowie band mates, whom I love and respect so deeply, was one of the most difficult performances of my life... but the power of music continues to give me the strength to weather my profound sadness, the courage to navigate my darkest moments, and a reason to remain passionately and truly alive...

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Mike Garson: The experience of playing again at the Brits after eleven years with my old bandmates Sterling, Cat, Gerry, Gail and Earl was surreal. Everyone there but David. We wouldn’t have been able to perform If hadn’t had all of our full focus on that performance. We held back so many tears. To honor David with Lorde’s performance and the band’s arrangement was so gratifying. I hope it was cathartic for the whole planet. As a band, we practiced for at least 100 hours for that six minute performance. We only wanted to do justice to David. I hope we did.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Gerry Leonard: It’s been a crazy few weeks here. We got the call to put the last touring Bowie band back together for a tribute to David at the 2016 Brit Awards. Everyone came together in London from the four corners of the earth to play and celebrate our dear friend. We were able to get Lorde to sing for us and perform “Life on Mars”, and she knocked it out of the park. It was a special thing to do with a very select group that David had distilled over the years. We hit our marks and I was so relieved to see it resonate with everyone who loved David just as we did. We miss him so much, everything has changed ...

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Lorde: Such an honour getting to perform BRITs 2016 paying tribute to my hero. I was so nervous in the wings, and then I whispered to myself "just sing it to David", and nothing else mattered. Also, performing with Bowie's brilliant touring band - including the inimitable Mike Garson who played DB's keys since the 70s! - was unreal.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Catherine Russell: Thank You Brit Awards 2016 for a moving David Bowie Tribute! Honored to participate along with DB band mates.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Earl Slick: WE THANK Lorde FOR HER BEAUTIFUL, HEART FELT PERFORMANCE. WE ALSO THANK HER FOR DOING RIGHT BY THE BOSS. HE WOULD BE, AS WE WERE, VERY TOUCHED AND HONORED TO SHARE THE STAGE WITH HER. NOT TO FORGET THE HEART FELT WORDS FROM Annie Lennox AND Gary Oldman.

Performing at The Brits, was without a doubt the most emotional experience I have ever had on a stage in my life. The one thing that rang true, is I am a pro and the show must go on. Seeing not only the band but the support and love from the friends I have not seen all that much meant the world to me. Mark Adams, Alan Edwards, Julian Stockton and Nick Belshaw who held  it all together, was not only priceless, it drove home just how much the boss made sure we were taken care of by the best there is. Doing the show made it all real, as sad as it was. Speaking for myself I really needed to be there, and glad I was. I thank you all !!!

DB was a class act I will never forget ..........

Gerry Leonard’s DB Deep Cut Of The Day

“And your prayers they break the sky in two”

Being his birthday today (Feb 26th) we thought it would be great if Gerry 'Spooky Ghost' Leonard (fresh from a triumphant performance with the Bowie band at the Brit Awards), chose a track for DB Deep Cut Of The Day.

Thankfully he obliged and this is what he had to say about his selection, the Reality Tour rendition of Loving The Alien...

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

One of the special songs for me with David has been "Loving the Alien"

I was somewhat aware of the track, but one day I got a call from David out of the blue asking me if I wanted to play Carnegie Hall with him.

He told me he wanted to do "Loving the Alien" with just himself singing and myself on guitar and gave me the new key.

After I hung up the phone and started to listen i was suddenly terrified as the original production was very dense.

But as I charted the song and started to transpose it onto the acoustic guitar it slowly revealed itself as this beautiful and powerful song.

A simple version of the motif appealed to me and I found these great open chords. Again David's harmonic writing was inspiring and challenging.

I came up with a basic framework and on our rehearsal I started to play my idea to illustrate it to him. He just came in singing and we did the whole song once.

“Great Gerry, we'll do that tomorrow night” he said and walked out of the room. We played it like this for the first live time in Carnegie and ended up doing it most nights on the Reality tour.

It is a hidden gem of a song that holds a special place for me in David’s catalogue.

From the ghost of somewhere.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Thanks Gerry and hope your birthday was special today

Bowie At The Beeb vinyl box out now

“And me I’m on a radio show”

Released worldwide today is the vinyl box set of Bowie At The Beeb, originally mooted for release in 2000.

Previously released on CD the same year, this is the vinyl debut of the Best Of David Bowie’s BBC radio sessions from 1968 – 1972.

The 39-track 4-disk set comes in a lift off lid box and features a full colour 20 page booklet. This vinyl version features Oh! You Pretty Things from the Sounds Of The 70s Bob Harris session, broadcast in September 1971, which was previously exclusive to the Japanese release of the CD. This performance features just David and Mick Ronson as a duo.

Completely exclusive to this collection, and therefore making its debut, is the once lost The Supermen from the Sounds Of The 70s Andy Ferris session, broadcast in March 1970, and performed by The Hype. This recording was only rediscovered during the research for the original CD set and remained unreleased until now.

Go get it here.

Go here for the tracklisting for the eight sides.

Standing ovation for BRITS Bowie tribute

“Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know”

Following moving spoken word tributes from singer Annie Lennox and actor Gary Oldman, Lorde joined David Bowie’s touring band for a beautiful and heartfelt rendition of Life On Mars?, at the Brit Awards ceremony in the London O2 Arena tonight (Wednesday).

After Annie’s touching eulogy, Gary Oldman accepted the Brits Icon Award on behalf of David Bowie and gave an equally moving speech before introducing Lorde singing with the last Bowie touring band.

The band, consisting of (in alphabetical order): Sterling Campbell (drums), Gail Ann Dorsey (bass), Mike Garson (piano), Gerry Leonard (guitar), Catherine Russell (keyboards and guitar) and Earl Slick (guitar), ran through a medley of Space Oddity, Rebel Rebel, Let’s Dance, Ashes To Ashes, Ziggy Stardust, Fame, Under Pressure and "Heroes".

Lorde entered the stage as the medley segued into a piano led, full band rendition of Life On Mars?. The 19-year-old singer delivered a stylish and beautifully fragile but assured performance, prompting a standing ovation from the capacity crowd and gathered celebrities.

During rehearsals earlier in the day Lorde posed with the band for pictures and expressed her gratitude for being given the honour of performing with them in David’s honour.

Following the sad announcement of David’s passing in January, she posted this tribute to him on her FB page.

Meanwhile, you can watch both Annie Lennox and Gary Oldman’s contributions on the official Brit Awards 2016 YouTube channel.

And if it’s still there when you look, Slate have hosted a video of the Band’s full performance.

UNBOUND: A ★InstaMiniSeries PRESS RELEASE

UNBOUND: A ★INSTAMINISERIES

AN INTERPRETATION OF AND INSPIRED BY DAVID BOWIE’S NEW ALBUM

FEATURING TAVI GEVINSON, PATRICIA CLARKSON & OTHERS

PREMIERES FEBRUARY 25, 8 PM EASTERN AT:

www.instagram.com/instaminiseries

Trailer airing now on Instagram @instaminiseries

FEBRUARY 22, 2016: InstaMiniSeries, the innovative channel that creates episodic programming

exclusively for the Instagram platform, was given unique pre-release access to the music from ★

(pronounced ‘Blackstar’), the 28th studio album by cultural legend and icon David Bowie. The

result of their work with Bowie’s material is UNBOUND: A ★ InstaMiniSeries. The first of 16

episodes premiers Thursday, February 25 at 8PM Eastern, on instagram.com/instaminiseries.

New episodes will debut at 8PM Eastern each subsequent Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and

Friday.

The release of David Bowie’s ★ on January 8, via ISO/Columbia Records wrapped up

months of feverish anticipation punctuated by some of the best reviews of Bowie’s storied career

and a #1 debut in more than 20 countries—including a first ever #1 in the U.S. In the weeks

since, the unprecedented outpouring of love and appreciation for ★ and the entire Bowie

catalogue has continued to build exponentially: In addition to ★ topping charts worldwide, 12

Bowie albums filled out the upper reaches of the UK charts, tying Elvis Presley’s record for most

simultaneous entries in the UK Top 40. Bowie’s visual body of work has fared similarly,

smashing the Vevo record for most video views in one day with an astounding 51 million on

January 11 alone—the most-watched of these being the just-released “Lazarus,” which has since

surpassed 31 million views while the clip for the ★ title track is approaching 25 million. At

radio, “Lazarus” scored Bowie his first Top 40 single since 1987 and remains in the Top 25 at

Triple AAA, while tracks spanning his entire career from “Space Oddity” to ★ commandeered a

record 21 of the total 50 positions on Billboard’s Hot Rock songs chart.

With his enduring legacy as a savvy observer and pioneering user of emerging

technology and media, Bowie saw in InstaMiniSeries an exciting new platform to explore

interpretation of and storytelling within his music. Stopping short of an artistic collaboration,

Bowie instead opened the doors last fall to the InstaMiniSeries creative team, Carolynn Cecilia

and Nikki Borges, and provided them advance, unmediated access to the music and images from

★ thus allowing them to create their own visual interpretations of the songs, with no limits or

preconditions on his part.

Completed in December 2015 and spanning 16 episodes, UNBOUND: A★

InstaMiniSeries takes its audience on a journey of evocative images inspired by the moods

suggested in the album’s music, lyrics and artwork. The series is propelled by a focus on this

visual interpretation of the ★ album as opposed to a literal, linear narrative. Each episode of the

series, designed with a global audience in mind, is sure to capture the imaginations of all who

experience it and will undoubtedly lead to endless speculation and discussion of meaning,

metaphor and intention.

Nikki Borges, InstaMiniSeries Founder and Executive Producer said: "David Bowie has

always been about reinvention over repetition. Remarkably honest and passionate in his work,

his innovations have influenced our own work as we transform a social media platform into a

creative outlet. We are grateful to have the opportunity to participate with the chameleonic rock

icon and honored to be entrusted with interpreting his art."

Carolynn Cecilia, UNBOUND Writer and Producer, adds: “David Bowie was a

trailblazer, not just in the world of music, but in the art of storytelling. Whether through lyrics,

melodies, film, theater or mythical persona he never fails to transcend WHAT WAS and set the

tone -and the bar- for what CAN BE. As story-tellers and music lovers, who better for us to be

inspired by than David Bowie?”

Lawrence Peryer, Producer of UNBOUND, concludes: “In light of recent events, this

project has taken on new significance for all of us – cast and crew. We are very happy to be

bringing a new creative work to David’s fan worldwide at a time when a focus on his music and

art is much-needed.”

The trailer for UNBOUND: A ★InstaMiniSeries is available for viewing now at

instagram.com/instaminiseries. The series premiers Thursday, February 25 at 8PM Eastern, also

on instagram.com/instaminiseries. Instagram users can view the series by following the account

@instaminiseries.

Bowie on RHP broadcast this day in 1973

“But she knows she really loves him”

The screening of David Bowie on Russell Harty Plus took place on Saturday, February 17, 1973.

The original full broadcast which included Drive-In Saturday, the Bowie/Harty interview and a solo performance of My Death, was wiped by LWT.

A partial repeat on Russell Harty Plus Pop rescued the first song and much of the interview, but sadly My Death and the full interview apparently survive as audio only.

If you’ve never seen it, it’s an absolute treat to look back at the 26-year-old Bowie, nervous in interview but peacock proud in performance for his first ever chat show appearance.

Our montage shows two stills from the interview plus pictures from the broadcast version of My Death (bottom left) and the rehearsal of My Death (bottom right)

Check out various pieces of surviving footage and audio on YouTube.

DB Deep cut of the day

“The Voyeur Of Utter Destruction (As Beauty)”

Judging by all of the recent David Bowie chart action, it’s safe to say that there are a lot of people discovering his music for the first time.

There are still two best of compilations currently sitting in the UK Official Albums Chart Top 20, with one of those, Best Of Bowie, at #3.

Some of you reading this may wish to explore further, a move encouraged by Reeves Gabrels, who wrote and recorded with Bowie on several albums, from the first Tin Machine LP in 1989, right up to 'hours...' in 1999.

Here’s a line from an interview with Reeves for MOJO last week...

“It would be wonderful if music fans took this opportunity to listen. Now is the time to go deep. There is a life’s work waiting there to be heard.”

Indeed there is and there’s no time like the present to begin that voyage of discovery.

We’re kicking off with a Reeves co-write from the 1995 1. OUTSIDE album, The Voyeur Of Utter Destruction (As Beauty) (Bowie/Eno/Gabrels)

Produced by David Bowie, Brian Eno and David Richards, the track was never released as a single, but it was a firm live favourite on both the 1995/1996 Outside tour and the 1997/1998 Earthling tour.

Listen to The Voyeur of Utter Destruction (As Beauty) by David Bowie on Spotify.

Rebel Rebel and Alabama Song share a birthday

“Hey babe, it's time to say goodbye*”

Rebel Rebel and Alabama Song are two Bowie 45s which were originally released on this day in 1974 and 1980 respectively. (February 15th)

The former was a Top 5 single on the UK chart while the latter peaked at #23.

Alabama Song was a fan favourite on the 1978 World Tour, so even though the record buying public may have found the unusual tempo and key changes a challenge, fans were glad that a studio version of the song had finally been made available.

The release was coupled with a new stripped back recording of Space Oddity which Bowie performed on UK TV with a video filmed especially for the Kenny Everett New Year's Eve TV show, as the decades changed from the 70s to the 80s.

If you’ve not seen it before, view it here. Certain scenes may seem familiar.

*Today’s lyric quotation lifts a bit from Rebel Rebel and Alabama Song. You do the math.

Maria Schneider wins GRAMMY for Sue single

“Sue, I got the job”

It is with much pleasure that we can report that Maria Schneider has won two gongs at the 58th Annual GRAMMY Awards.

Maria won BEST LARGE JAZZ ENSEMBLE ALBUM, for her excellent The Thompson Fields album.

And she also picked up the award for BEST ARRANGEMENT, INSTRUMENTS AND VOCALS for her contribution to the Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime) recording.

Tony Visconti (who co-produced the track with Bowie at Avatar Studios), posted this on his FB page...

“This just in from pre-broadcast Grammys: Maria Schneider just won the Grammy for best arrangement in the Jazz catagories, her arrangement for SUE (or in a season of crime)! She was in tears when she thanked David and me from the stage. Hooray for Maria! She's a real talent, been working all her life, a student of Gil Evans. David would've been over the moon to hear this. I am so happy. This was reported by my handsome manager, Joe D'Ambrosio.”

All this in the very week that Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime) hits its highest position in the Official Vinyl Singles Chart Top 30 in the UK, where it currently resides at #4.

Congratulations to Maria and everybody involved in the making of this record.

Tilda Swinton’s Berlinale Bowie tribute

“They watch us from behind their shades”

Tilda Swinton paid tribute to her friend David Bowie while introducing The Man To Fell To Earth at a Berlinale Special screening on Friday night.

Swinton (co-star with David Bowie in the video for The Stars (Are Out Tonight)), gave a moving speech, from which, this excerpt...

“I have an interesting relationship to this film, I come from a family that has no connection to film at all, and when I was 17 I was ill in bed with glandular fever and I had read every book in the house. And my mother’s cousin was married to a screenwriter, and he bought me a screenplay to read. I’d never seen a screenplay in my life, and it was The Man Who Fell to Earth. And I’ve always felt a connection to the film for that reason, and also of course the first album I ever bought, several years before I had a record player, was Aladdin Sane, and I used to carry it around with me even though I couldn’t hear it, I could look at that picture.”

You can view the full thing on the Berlinale FB page.

Screen Daily also posted a review of the event here.

Arcade Fire’s Bowie Tribute Parade video

“We could steal time, just for one day”

Back on January 12, we told you about an event in New Orleans billed as:  Arcade Fire and Preservation Hall Jazz Band Present "Pretty Things" A Memorial Parade for Bowie.

Here’s an entry from the Arcade Fire FB page on that day:

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

David Bowie was one of the band's earliest supporters and champions. He not only created the world that made it possible for our band to exist, he welcomed us into it with grace and warmth. We will take to the grave the moments we shared; talking, playing music and collaborating as some of the most profound and memorable moments of our lives. A true artist even in his passing, the world is more bright and mysterious because of him, and we will continue to shout prayers into the atmosphere he created.

Arcade Fire have now posted a 5:40 film of the parade on their YouTube channel. Check it out here.

See the FB event page for more footage.
