Bowie replaces Bowie at the #1 spot

“So I turned myself to face me”

David Bowie’s domination of the UK album chart continues apace, with the news today that ★ has finally been knocked from the top spot...by David Bowie!

He has seen off a strong challenge from Sia to claim the #1 spot for a fourth week, albeit with a different album.

Bowie has become the first act to knock themselves off the top of the Official Albums Chart in nearly six years, as the Best Of Bowie compilation, originally released in 2002, has replaced Blackstar at #1.

★ slips to #2, the last time any act held both top positions on the Official Albums Chart was Adele back in May 2011 (with 21 and 19).

Bowie retains 7 albums on this week’s Official Albums Chart Top 40 with a total of 14 albums in the Top 80.

Here’s the full list of the 14 Bowie albums in this week’s Official Albums Chart:

01 - BEST OF BOWIE - PARLOPHONE

02 - BLACKSTAR - RCA

08 - NOTHING HAS CHANGED - THE VERY BEST OF DAVID BOWIE - PARLOPHONE

19 - HUNKY DORY - PARLOPHONE

22 - THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST - PARLOPHONE

37 - ALADDIN SANE - PARLOPHONE

39 - "HEROES" - PARLOPHONE

45 - LOW - PARLOPHONE

51 - THE NEXT DAY - RCA

52 - STATION TO STATION - PARLOPHONE

Owen Dippie’s Aladdin Sane mural

“...painting our faces...”

Following on from NOIR artist having completed a mural commissioned by Sony Music Belgium for David Bowie’s ★ album, details of another excellent Bowie mural have surfaced.

Australian Bowie fan, John Larkin, tells us that the Aladdin Sane Eyes Open/Eyes Closed mural was spray painted by Owen Dippie of New Zealand, on the hoardings of a building renovation in central Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia.

Owen Dippie specialises in large scale street art and you can see him at work on the mural in our montage.

Work was completed on the piece on January 31st. Check out Owen’s impressive catalogue of works here.

Earthling released 19 years ago today

“My, my, the time do fly”

David Bowie’s 1997 album Earthling was released in the UK on February 3rd 1997 (with worldwide regional variations).

The album produced a slew of excellent singles (most of them accompanied by some of Bowie’s best ever videos), in the shape of Telling Lies, Little Wonder, Dead Man Walking, I'm Afraid of Americans and Seven Years In Tibet.

Produced by David Bowie, Reeves Gabrels and Mark Plati, Earthling reached #6 on the UK album chart and entered the top ten in several other countries.

The band personnel for this release was Reeves Gabrels, Mark Plati, Gail Ann Dorsey, Mike Garson and Zachary Alford, with some brilliant and possibly overlooked solos from Gabrels and Garson. (Listen to Looking For Satellites and Battle for Britain (The Letter) respectively)

Earthling is a remarkable album that not only stands the test of the last nineteen years but still sounds fresh and vital. But don’t take our word for it, check it out here.

ISOLAR tour kicks off in Vancouver forty years ago

“The return of the Thin White Duke”

David Bowie’s 1976 ISOLAR tour of North America and Europe in support of the Station To Station album, commenced on February 2 at the Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver, British Columbia, concluding at the Pavillon de Paris in Paris, France, on May 18 the same year, close to seventy shows later.

Variously known as the Station to Station and White Light tours, it is now referred to as the ISOLAR tour, as reflected by the title of the official tour programme. (The 1978 World Tour is now referred to as the ISOLAR 2 tour)

Bowie’s band for the shows (collectively known as Raw Moon) consisted of: Carlos Alomar (rhythm guitar), Stacy Heydon (lead guitar), Dennis Davis (drums and percussion), George Murray (bass) and Tony Kaye (keyboards and synthesisers). Bowie himself also played saxophone on occasion.

Our montage shows images from contact sheets of that first night taken by Andy Kent and a pass from the opening night, along with the Raw Moon bass drum logo head cover.

The colour image is the cover of the last publication from Cygnet Committee: The Dawn Of The Duke - David Bowie in Vancouver, 1976.

This volume features rare and exclusive Andy Kent shots from rehearsals and the opening show, along with his recollections of both.

The Dawn Of The Duke also has the usual reviews and memorabilia, with accompanying text by Andy Barding.

Speaking of Andy, he sent us in these words from Stacy Heydon (top left in our montage), written this very day, regarding that opening night all those years ago:

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

“It all became real when I sat on the stage watching them all file into the venue. We'd sound checked at 3ish and Buford Jones had the house audio dialled in. We were confident and well-rehearsed.

It was this 21-year-old’s second time performing in front of tens of thousands of people and I could barely wait for the Dali film to end, and for me to fire up the Marshalls and get the show started, with my feedback/intro to Station to Station.

For the first minute or so, standing there solo doin’ my thang, my knees would have been shaking like Paris Hilton's at a spelling bee. But when you have a wingman like Dave, it's pretty damned easy to calm the eff down and let his greatness make us all look good... Just as he'd done with everyone he'd worked with countless times before and after. It was an absolute honor sharing the stage with this great man... Cheers! - Stacy Heydon”

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Station To Station released this day in 1976

“Such is the stuff from where dreams are woven”

As the headline suggests, Station To Station (the album that introduced the world to The Thin White Duke), is forty-years-old today.

Considered a classic among fans and critics alike, the record was unusual for a Bowie album in that it contained just six tracks, even though it still clocked in at a little over thirty eight minutes.

For the first time ever, a David Bowie album was a bigger commercial success Stateside than in the UK. It reached #3 on the Billboard 200 and #5 on the official UK album chart.

Four of Station To Station’s six songs were released as commercial A-sides by RCA, with Golden Years being the pre-album hit.

The song scored Bowie yet another top ten just in time for the Christmas UK chart in 1975, where it remained right up to the release of the album in January 1976.

Here’s the tracklisting:

1. Station To Station (10:08)

2. Golden Years (4:03)

3. Word On A Wing (6:00)

4. TVC15 (5:29)

5. Stay (6:08)

6. Wild Is The Wind (5:58)

Top right in our montage is how the withdrawn colour version of the sleeve would have looked had it hit the racks. Top left is the two-colour version (red and black ink on a white sleeve) which is the version actually released.

The stark appearance of the final sleeve was more in keeping with the monochromatic look of the 1976 Station To Station tour, or the Isolar tour as it’s since become known.

If you’ve not listened to the album in a while, remind yourself of its majesty here.

MOJO Bowie special out now

“I got a MOJO, don't you know” *

The March issue of MOJO magazine is celebrating David Bowie with over 20 pages, thus...

The latest MOJO magazine is a celebration of the life and work of DAVID BOWIE and includes TWO FREE DELUXE BOWIE POSTERS. 20-plus pages of coverage includes Bowie himself writing for MOJO about the music that changed him, an extraordinary tribute by Siouxsie Sioux and Tony Visconti with the truth about Bowie’s final album, Blackstar.

* OK, today’s lyric quotation is possibly a bit obscure. It's a line from the Calvin Carter song, I Ain't Got You, originally recorded by Billy Boy Arnold.

Bowie covered the song live during his stint with The Manish Boys eventually recording a cover of I Wish You Would for Pin Ups, another Billy Boy Arnold release.

The Yardbirds also covered both songs.

Q’s David Bowie: A Celebration out Friday

“Far out from the sad eyes, Strange, mad celebration”

The March issue of Q magazine (Q356) is celebrating David Bowie with a 35-page study of his recorded music. Here’s a bit from the site.

“We had almost completed work on our David Bowie retrospective when the shocking news of his death from cancer grimly greeted the dawn of 11 January,” writes Q’s Features Editor Ted Kessler, introducing the 35-page celebration of David Bowie in our new issue, on sale from Friday (22 January).

“Our original mission was to tell the story behind each of his albums, designed to lend context and perspective to his latest – and last – recording, the magnificent ★ (Blackstar). While we proceeded to add and adjust some pieces accordingly, a detailed map of all his recorded output seemed a fitting epitaph. Because that’s what will remain after we are all dust: Bowie’s era-defining, genre-straddling, imitation-defying back catalogue. While the world mourns one of its brightest lights going out, David Bowie’s immortality is assured by the music he left behind for us all. Not only did he design our lives. He offered something for future generations to aim for as well.”

Get Q for the inside story of each of Bowie’s albums – plus print editions of the magazine come with posters featuring Bowie and Motörhead’s Lemmy, the other passing musical giant we salute this month.
