First ever Bowie recording is fifty-years-old today

First ever Bowie recording is fifty-years-old today

“So rest your head and read a treasured dream”

Despite the headline’s claim, he wasn’t yet Bowie and the recording wasn’t a lead vocal.

However, evidence points to this day being the first time ever that the teenage David Jones committed his voice to magnetic tape in a professional recording studio.

We’ll hand over to Andy Barding for the full story…

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Today marks arguably the most important anniversary of David Bowie's career - but there's a good chance you won't know why!

Fifty years ago today, on August 29 1963, a 16-year-old David walked through the door of Decca's West Hampstead studios for an audition. His band, The Kon-rads, quickly recorded just one song live, a new group composition called 'I Never Dreamed', then waited for the assembled talent scouts to deliver their verdict.

Decca were quick to say 'no'. Rolling Stones manager Eric Easton, who had previously shown some interest in representing the semi-pro band, also passed. And can you guess what the bookers of TV talent show 'Ready Steady Win' had to say when they got to hear the same demo? That's right. Another 'no'.

The band were crushed... yet thrilled to have enjoyed their first recording session. And even though Davie Jones didn't take the main vocal on the track (that honour went to regular Kon-rads frontman Roger Ferris) he DID contribute backing vocals. Which makes this his very first pop recording, pre-dating the Davie Jones and the King Bees' "Liza Jane" single by almost ten months.

So what happened to this important piece of pop history? And how do we hear it?

The sad news is Decca's master recording is long lost, the master tape having presumably been wiped or re-recorded over. But, tantalisingly, a handful of metal acetate discs (a fragile lacquer record intended for temporary use) were cut at the studio and handed out to some of the boys in the band.

Former Kon-rads Roger Ferris (now a successful businessman in Wales) and Alan Dodds (now the Rev Alan Dodds living in Devon!) lost their personal copies over time. If any others have survived to this day they certainly haven't turned up in collections or on auction sales lists... yet.

But before you go running to the auction sites in search of this true collectors' gold, a word of caution: the Kon-rads DID go on to record a couple of singles for CBS in 1965, and they DO crop up for sale from time to time. And, interesting though they are, none of these freakbeat 45s feature David's dulcets. He had already moved onto the King Bees by then.

Some years ago, some hardcore collector hearts skipped a couple of beats when a previously undocumented Konrads single (the hyphen had by then been dropped) turned up on an auction site. 'I Didn't Know How Much', penned by Neville Wills and Tony Edwards, was even on the Decca Canada label (US demo copies exist, too) - prompting conjecture that it might somehow be linked to that very first audition session.

But, no. This song, its b-side 'I Thought Of You Last Night' and a handful of other studio recordings which have since appeared on bootleg with the misleading title of 'Bromley Scout Hut rehearsals' are all from the post-David line-up. A fact that has since been confirmed by David himself.

So the hunt for 'I Never Dreamed' continues! If you happen to have a copy, needless to say, get in touch!

And in the meantime, as an incentive for all you record-hunting sleuths out there, here are the original lyrics in full - as penned 50 years ago by Alan Dodds, and miraculously recalled by Roger Ferris:

I never dreamed

That I'd fall in love with you

I never dreamed

That your eyes could be so blue

Till I looked your way baby

And saw your tender smile

I wanted you so badly

My heart was captured for a while

I never dreamed

Your caress could hurt so much

I never dreamed

That I would shake to your tender touch

Till you held my hand

Run your fingers through my hair

The other guys all laughed at me

But I didn't really care

I never dreamed

I never dreamed

I never dreamed

Sorrow is next 40th anniversary picture disc

“Your high class games of sorrow”

Continuing the run of 40th anniversary 7” picture discs so far issued by EMI, Parlophone Records will release a 40th anniversary 7” picture disc of David Bowie’s Sorrow on October 14th.

Originally released on October 12th 1973, Sorrow was Bowie’s inimitable take on The Merseybeats’ version of the song (originally released by The McCoys).

The single reached #3 in the UK, staying in the charts for 15 weeks, and was the perfect advert for Bowie’s 1973 covers album, the glam rock classic, Pin Ups.

Bowie’s version is an exceptional interpretation of a great song, so successful it has superseded the original and become THE definitive version.

The 40th anniversary 7” picture disc of David Bowie’s Sorrow will be available as a double A-side single, backed with a rare live version of the song recorded at the Pacific National Coliseum, Vancouver, from David’s hugely successful Serious Moonlight Tour on 12th September 1983.

The single was mastered by Ray Staff at AIR Mastering.

Pictured here is the original Dutch sleeve for Sorrow.

Sound and Vision 2013 set for digital release

“Waiting for the gift”

You may remember the Sound and Vision remix we told you about back in February that was commissioned for Sony’s Xperia™ Z smartphone advertising campaign.

Indeed, many of you enquired how you could get your hands on a longer version than the tantalising 58 second one used in the advert.

Well, now your prayers have been answered as Parlophone Records will release a new longer mix as a digital download on October 7th.

Sound and Vision 2013 is a beautifully haunting reimagining of the song, re-worked from the original stems by remixer Sonjay Prabhakar.

By stripping away much of the original instrumentation and adding a new piano by Rob Gentry (programmed by Sonjay Prabhakar), while keeping Bowie’s original lead vocal and Mary Hopkin’s backing vocal, the song takes on a new reflective resonance.

Sound and Vision originally appeared on David Bowie’s 1977 Low album and was released as a single in the UK on 11th February of that year, reaching number 3 on the UK Singles Chart.

Sound and Vision 2013 and the original Sound and Vision will both be available to digitally download from October 7th.

FOOTNOTE: Beware of a fake remix which was posted on YouTube in March. It was clumsily edited together from the original Sony version into an unconvincing three minute one.

Happy Thirteenth Birthday to Lexi

“Teenage Wildlife”

We’re sure you will all want to join us in wishing many happy returns of the day to Alexandria Zahra Jones…known to her friends and family as Lexi.

You may well be wondering what the relevance of the picture accompanying this piece is. Well, it’s Lexi’s dad also at the age of 13 in 1960, already dressing up and getting in the papers and generally causing a rumpus!

He’s the manboy in the middle, flanked by a sailor (appropriately enough) and his good friend George Underwood.

They are pictured at the American Embassy in London where David was presented with American Football shoulder pads, helmet and ball.

His fascination with America was apparent from a very early age, and that interest is possibly why his daughter is enjoying her first day as a teenager in the land of the free right now.

Happy Birthday Lexi, love ‘n stuff from everybody here and no doubt anybody else who thinks your father is a jolly good egg.

NME picks up on Valentine’s Day subtleties

“He’s got something to say”

Though it was apparent that various Bowie fan forums spotted the clues early on, the subtext of David Bowie’s Valentine’s Day video seemed to go largely unnoticed by the media at large.

However, Lucy Jones has highlighted those points over at NME Blog, proving that Valentine’s Day is just as much a conversation piece as the previous videos from The Next Day.

You can watch Valentine’s Day here now and pre-order the limited edition Valentine’s Day picture disc here.

Thanks yet again to Jimmy King for another great still from the video shoot.

“Popular musics and aftershocks”

Issue #6 of the excellent Classic Pop magazine has a ten page cover feature entitled: When Bowie Went Pop.

The magazine reassesses Bowie’s work in the eighties via some of the musicians that worked with him during the period, as it attempts to explore “how David Bowie's music defined the 1980s pop landscape”.

The article, written by Andy Price, also studies the work that Bowie made during that decade - from the albums Scary Monsters to Never Let Me Down and the tours, soundtracks, film, television and stage work that Bowie crammed into the 80s.

The mag is on sale this coming Thursday 1st August and digital versions can be downloaded here.

V&A issue Outside limited edition coloured vinyl

“It’s happening outside...”

The V&A has just announced the release of another David Bowie limited edition vinyl pressing (details below) which you can order here right now.

Excerpts from Outside by David Bowie
Limited Edition Vinyl
Exclusive to the V&A
Limited pressing of 500

The colour of the vinyl used in this edition is intended to reflect the colours that make up the elements of the original album artwork for ‘Excerpts from Outside’ . The main green colour is mixed with brown, cream, purple and black from the artwork to create a ‘marbled’ vinyl effect.
The process is done manually, by putting the batches of raw coloured vinyl together as it is warm. This is then mixed together and cut into individual ‘pucks’ of vinyl that are then inserted into the record presses for LP manufacture. Each record produced is therefore individual as the mix of colours is never the exact same in any two copies of the LP, making this a unique opportunity to purchase a very desirable Bowie collectible.

Please note each pressing is a unique colour combination and therefore might not be an exact match to the image shown.

Bowie’s old school makes David Bowie Is One Of Us film

“Hey man, my school days insane”

Staff and students from University of the Arts London (UAL), supported by the learning team at the V&A, have worked with young people from David Bowie's former school, Ravens Wood School in Bromley, on a short film entitled David Bowie is...one of us.

It’s a wonderful little tribute to DB and his time at Ravens Wood School, though it’s no wonder he went the way he did when one considers the school uniform: black and white leotards! ;-)

Below is some background to the making of the film, which you can watch in its entirety here on YouTube.

David Bowie short film created in collaboration between University of the Arts London (UAL) and the V&A

Staff and students from University of the Arts London (UAL), supported by the learning team at the V&A, have worked with young people from David Bowie's former school, Ravens Wood School in Bromley, on a short film entitled David Bowie is...one of us, with the help of 3AngryMen film production company and music producer, Robert Worby. The film includes original choreography, costumes and make-up by UAL students and Ravens Wood pupils related to Bowie's creative influences.

The V&A approached UAL's Widening Participation team to help devise and develop the project, inspired by the exhibition David Bowie is which runs at the V&A until 11 August 2013.

Caroline Stevenson, Lecturer at UAL, said of the film:

"We spent quite a lot of time researching the ideas behind Bowie's work, but also imagining what life might have been like for him as a young student in the Bromley suburbs. We used JG Ballard's ideas about Inner Space and also Brian Eno's Oblique Strategy 'Ghost echoes' to develop the characters and the narrative in the film, both of which influenced Bowie as well. The students chose the title, David Bowie is...one of us, because we wanted to make a film for David Bowie, rather than a film about him; the main character is inspired by Bowie, but he's also all of us. The film narrative is about that inter-zone that Ballard talks about where the imaginary world meets reality."

The film was devised and filmed at Ravens Wood, using some key spaces that were also used by Bowie when he was at school there, such as the stairwell leading to the art room where he used to play his guitar because he liked the acoustics.

Jackie McManus, Head of Widening Participation at UAL, said:

"UAL's Widening Participation team is delighted to have been invited by the V&A to work with Ravens Wood School (known as Bromley Tech when Bowie was there). The film is a celebration and honouring of Bowie; students at Ravens Wood School and UAL, and all those on a journey of creative discovery."

Adrian Deakes, Programme Manager for Theatre and Performance in the Learning Department of the V&A, said:

“It’s been a pleasure working with UAL and the school and their students. Although they were obviously aware that Bowie was an ex-pupil, I think they were amazed by how the exhibition highlights his world influence and how wide-ranging this has been. I think the film, from the costumes, to the make-up, to the music and choreography really reflects that.”

UAL believes that widening participation to art and design higher education is essential to realising the University's vision and values, of innovating and stimulating creativity, and valuing diversity and respecting individuality.

In the current NME (July 13th), photographer Chalkie Davies remembers the show and reveals some of the incredible shots he took on the night, images he hasn’t made public until now.
