Sorrow In Gibson's Top 50 Best Cover Versions

You're out there playing your high class games of sorrow...

The folks at Gibson.com have kicked off another of their popular polls with what they reckon to be the Top 50 Cover Songs of All Time.

In the first instalment they have listed ten covers from #50 down to #41 and David Bowie's 1973 cover of Sorrow is at #46. Here's what they had to say about it...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

46. ?Sorrow,? David Bowie (The McCoys, The Merseys)

This track from Bowie?s 1973 Pinups covers album foreshadowed the crooner style Bowie would often adopt on the albums that followed. Sporting a less sprite arrangement than The Merseys? 1966 hit upon which it was based (The McCoys, of ?Hang on Sloopy? fame, had actually first recorded the song), Bowie?s version was power by watery keyboards and a sax-fueled bridge. His performance of ?Sorrow? on the legendary 1980 Floor Show was a highlight of that TV spectacle. ? Russell Hall

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Merseys' 1966 single reached #4 in the UK chart, while Bowie's version released seven years later managed to scrape in one place higher at #3 on the same chart.

Though the UK chart position was more than respectable, the Bowie cover made it to #2 in Ireland and it reached the top spot in both New Zealand and Australia.

This success Down Under was reflected in the issuing of sheet music (bottom left in above montage) which wasn't common for that territory.

The blue sheet music next to it above, was one of three versions released in the UK..the other colours being red and green.

Finally, the big bonus for fans was the appearance on the B-side of a non-album cover version, the Mort Shuman adaptation of Jacques Brel's Amsterdam, aka, Port Of Amstrerdam.

At the time, I reckon I played this as frequently as the A-side, such was the strength of Bowie's emotional and slowly-building, brilliant and breathless performance.

In fact, the French picture cover made it look as though the A and B sides had indeed been flipped, see top left in above montage, but this wasn't the case.

A Killer And A Young American Talk About Db's Influence

She could've been a Killer if she didn't walk the way she do, and she do...

Pictured above are of Montreal, with frontman Kevin Barnes at the... erm... front and Killer, Brandon Flowers peering over his shoulder.

Both have featured on these pages previously and they've both had something to say about David Bowie again recently. Here's an excerpt from avclub.com wherein Kevin Barnes talks about one of his all-time favourite onstage personas...

David Bowie?s Thin White Duke

KB: I?m more frightened by the Thin White Duke than I am by Aladdin Sane or Ziggy [Stardust]. He?s a little bit frightening because he has a little bit of a Third Reich influence, which is clearly extremely fucked up. The music that he did in that time period, whatever you call them, The Berlin Trilogy of records, are so amazing. They?re not really commercial successes, but they?re incredible artistic successes.

You have someone like Bowie, who had complete commercial success and was a rock star, one of the most famous faces on the planet. For him to go in a completely other direction on those albums is really inspiring for me, as an artist, to know that someone like that can take chances and it?s not going to kill his career to do it. I think it adds a lot of credibility to his oeuvre.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can read the full thing here.

I'll leave you with a bit from the UK's Independent newspaper called: The song that changed my life.

Brandon Flowers is among the songwriters that reveal the tracks that made the biggest impact on their careers...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brandon Flowers of The Killers - "Changes" by David Bowie

I still remember when I heard "Changes" for the first time. I thought it was Bob Dylan because of the way he sings the verses. I found out it was Bowie and it was from this album called Hunky Dory. It's the most important record to me, ever. I appreciate that he's still able to write songs, because even when there's a rough album, there will always be that one song on there that grabs you. But Hunky Dory is the pinnacle ? there's not one song I skip past."

Liza Jane Sets New Auction High Price At $3,000 Usd

She ain't more than a thousand times three (USD)...

An original 1964 stock copy of Liza Jane by Davie Jones with The King Bees on the Vocalion Pop label has sold on eBay for the incredible sum of £1,839.00 GBP. (Approximately $2,975.69 USD)

This is for a record that wasn't even described as mint and with the steady increase in the value of rare David Bowie vinyl, I wouldn't be surprised to see a mint copy of this one tip the scales at £2,000 GBP by the end of the year.

Who needs pension funds? Invest in rare Bowie if you really want a return on your hard-earned.

Instances Of Aladdin Sane Lightning Bolt On The Increase

Who will heart Aladdin Sane?...

As you are hopefully well aware, we regularly feature the many appearances of Aladdin Sane's trademark lightning bolt on these pages...and so, it's time for another round-up as they're coming thick and fast right now.

Here follows a line or two about each with online links where they exist, starting in a clockwise direction from top left on the above montage...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Under the Radar has a special Music vs. Comedy issue out now, wherein indie rock musicians and comedians interview each other. The cover shows comedian Aziz Ansari (NBC's Parks & Recreation) all Aladdin Saned up. He talked to both Toro Y Moi?s Chaz Bundick and TV on the Radio?s Dave Sitek for this issue.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Continuing clockwise is team captain, Fearne Cotton, sporting an Aladdin Sane flash top on the outrageous ITV2 comedy quiz show, Celebrity Juice. For the record, I don't agree with Keith Lemon, I think she's quite lovely and her nostrils don't trouble me...in fact, I'd like to smash her back...(that's enough of that - Decency Ed)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Top right, Harry Potter meets Aladdin Sane by Russell Walks. Apparently this is part of a planned series of iconic album covers mashed with iconic pop-culture characters that the gifted illustrator is working on right now.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bottom right is the arm of an unidentified fan who just got their Bowie ink. This is from a list of 20 Awesome Album Cover Art-Inspired Tattoos posted by Judy Berman, view the full-size version and the other tatts here.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bang in the middle is the love heart with Aladdin Sane flash tattoo that appears on the upper thigh of Rachel Wood. The legs above are indeed belonging to Rachel and not to Fearne Cotton as you may have suspected.

Rachel expressed her love for all things Bowie in a recent Esquire interview/feature...Here's an excerpt...

Halfway between Louis Jordan and Björk in the bar's post-brunch playlist, "Oh! You Pretty Things" comes on. Don't you know you're driving your mamas and papas insane... . "I love this song," Rachel says. "I grew up in love with David Bowie." (She has a tattoo on her upper thigh to prove it, a heart with an Aladdin Sane lightning bolt.) "So I was always into very androgynous things. Guys, girls ... I'm into androgyny in general." She says this helps explain the appeal of her ex Marilyn Manson.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Between Rachel's legs is Hollyoaks actor Alex Carter dressed as Aladdin Sane for no apparent reason...The snap appeared in one of the quiz rounds on aforementioned Celebrity Juice when Alex was a guest on the same episode that Fearne wore her lightning bolt top...What are the chances of that?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, bottom left is a grab from the latest BlackBerry for Everyone TV advert, which you can view here.

Bowie Tracks On Recent Compilations Round-up

You can't get enough, but enough ain't The Old Grey Whistle Test...

We don't usually highlight compilation CDs with a Bowie track on them these days, simply because there are too many to mention.

However, here are a handful of the more interesting recent releases that feature something other than Life On Mars? or Space Oddity...or any of the other popular usual suspects...

First up is the 3CD DAD Ultimate Guide To Rock which has been produced in the style of a Haynes manual, normally reserved for the world of motor vehicle maintenance. Released last year, this one contains the live version of Rebel Rebel from A Reality Tour, complete with "Tiocfaidh ár lá" pronouncement at the end of the song.

Next we have Dirty Water 2 - More Birth of Punk Attitude. Released in March this 2CD set, compiled by Journalist/Author/DJ, Kris Needs, contains Suffragette City. Aside from fitting in nicely with the theme of the album, I imagine the song is quite close to Kris's heart in that he would have been among the first few people to hear the song performed live. Being a resident of Aylesbury, Kris got to see many early Bowie shows, not only in Aylesbury but several times in the surrounding locations throughout 72/73.

Finally, the 3CD The Old Grey Whistle Test 40th Anniversary set due next month includes Oh! You Pretty Things. Though the third CD in this set is of live performances from the show, I should tell you that the Bowie track is simply the Hunky Dory studio version from 1971 in case you are led to believe otherwise.

Spiders From Mars Movie Poster Spotted

So where were The Spiders?

I recently ignored good advice and sacrificed a couple of non-returnable hours of my life viewing the film Skyline. I can't help myself, I'm a sucker for an alien invasion...and that's possibly David Bowie's fault.

Anyway, at one point in the film there was a tantalising glimpse of the above poster and so convincing was it, I wondered how it had escaped the notice of Bowie fans for so long.

After a bit of research I was relieved to discover it is in fact a contemporary piece created by artist Shannon Crawford and not an original 1950s film poster after all.

Check out this and a few other of Shannon's wonderfully evocative paintings featured in Skyline, here.

Lost Bowie Cover In 100th Edition Of The Word Magazine

Well it could have been me, Yes, it could have been me...

The June issue of popular music monthly The Word (top left), celebrates its 100th edition with a look back at all of the covers to grace the magazine since the first edition in March 2003.

David Bowie first appeared on the cover for issue #9 in November 2003 and then again in October 2009. More recently a cartoon of Rebel Rebel period Bowie shared the April 2010 edition.

However, in a feature entitled Mock-Ups And Cock-Ups it is revealed that the November 2004 edition (issue #21) was originally a great live shot of Bowie onstage at Live Aid.

It seems the author of this feature was just as disappointed on learning of a last-minute substitution as you probably are: "Epic Bowie shot inexplicably abandoned for the backside of Freddie Mercury".

Anyway, the Bowie issues that did make it to print are still available here..

Happy 100th to The Word and well done to Mark Ellen, David Hepworth and all involved for consistently producing a quality publication.

Freddie's arse though...that's a bit below the belt!

10 Iman No. 1 Art Prints By Db Sell In Seconds At 20x200

I'll sell some lithographs* of my honey...

Obviously this is not news to any of you who tried to buy one of David Bowie's IMAN No. 1 art prints via 20x200, immediately after receiving this notification yesterday.

The edition of ten 14" x 11" museum quality, archival pigment prints were priced at $800 each and at the speed they went, 20x200 could probably have charged a fair bit more for them.David Bowie created this edition to benefit Housing Works' Get a Room program, which provides housing to people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS...you can read more about the project here.

* OK, they might not be actual lithographs, but, "I'll sell some archival pigment prints of my honey" didn't scan so well.

Just Hours To Go For Bowie Award Auction

Pray tomorrow takes me higher...

As I post this, there are just a little under fourteen hours to go for this auction, which ends around noon tomorrow (Friday) UK time...

After an exciting flurry of bids when we first posted the story, (05.04.2011 NEWS: PLATINUM BOB AWARD AND PERSONALISED CD ON EBAY) the highest bid remains at £1,550.00 GBP (approximately $2,555.80 USD).

While that's a very generous bid, it would be wonderful if there was a last-minute scramble that took it even higher. The award is a beautiful thing and the image above doesn't really do it justice.

Don't forget that David Bowie himself has said he will be happy to personally sign a Best of Bowie CD with a dedication to the auction winner or recipient of the winner's choice.

You can join in the bidding here and I'll leave you with the eBay description again in case you missed it last time...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DAVID BOWIE 'BEST OF BOWIE' PLATINUM PRESENTATION DISC AND SIGNED CD

CHARITY AUCTION FOR THE BOOBY DAZZLERS 2 MOONWALK 2011

This US platinum award was presented to Julian Stockton of The Outside Organisation (@outsideorg) to commemorate RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) certified sales of more than one million copies in the USA of the 2002 album "Best Of Bowie".

The disc measures 50" by 48" and comes with a letter of authenticity from the owner.

The winner of the auction will also receive a copy of the "Best of Bowie" CD personally signed to them by David Bowie.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE: After the predicted last-minute flurry, this auction received 11 bids and increased by another £250 GBP to reach a total of £1,800 GBP. That's almost $3,000 USD and a very welcome addition to the Booby Dazzlers' coffers.

Now Bowie Selected In Latest Spotify Tv Ad

Spotify could control tomorrow's haze...

Following on from the iPhone TV ad that we told you about recently, (04.27.2011 NEWS: LOADS OF LITTLE BOWIE BITS ON THE GOGGLE BOX) in which David Bowie's Best Of Bowie is selected from a list of different albums, Spotify have repeated the compliment with their latest TV ad campaign: Spotify says hello to the iPod.

Again, I know it's not a huge deal, but it's always cool to see the Bowie name singled out from the musical soup of millions of possibilities. If you look closely above, you can see that one of the cartoon people is holding aloft a Bowie-produced album too.

You can view the full thing on this Spotify page.

Meanwhile, Spotify in the UK has the five tracks below as the current most listened to Bowie recordings...

No change at the top since we posted this same list two years ago this week. (05.16.2009 NEWS: BOWIE PREDICTED SPOTIFY AND THE LIKE SEVEN YEARS AGO)

Here's how the same UK listing stood back then in 2009...

Life On Mars?
Ziggy Stardust
Rebel Rebel
Changes
Starman

If your local Spotify is wildly different, it would be great to hear from you to see just how great the geographical fluctuations are.

New York Bowie Retrospective

From New York to Shanty Town, There's always something else...

We've had a few e-mails from folk wondering why we haven't plugged the above event currently taking place in New York.

Well, despite some of you clearly thinking otherwise, this retrospective isn't officially sanctioned.

As a general rule we don't give publicity to unofficial Bowie-related stuff, including books, DVDs, etc., etc.

Obviously whenever something is posted on these pages it gives it official status, so we don't do it.

Page Hamilton Remembers The End Of A Century

Put your Helmet on...

Page Hamilton has been talking to Noisecreep about his experiences playing guitar with one of his musical heroes, David Bowie, on the 'hours...' promotional tour at the tail-end of 1999.

Here's a bit from the interview...

"It was a huge confidence boost to play with one of my idols. One of the guys who is considered one of the Big Three, or Big Four --- including The Kinks, The Beatles, The Stones and Bowie. They influenced everybody."

Both the pictures on this page are shots of Page and DB that I took on that tour. The one above is from the now defunct London venue, The Astoria, which took place on December 2nd, 1999.

The shot below is from the last show David Bowie played in the 20th Century, which was at the Vega in Copenhagen a few days later on the 7th. Cracking shows both, as I'm sure you will agree if you were there.

You can read the full interview here, but I'll leave you with another snippet from it including some sage advice for those of you hoping to become pop singers from David Bowie himself...

"I just listened. He called me his Quiet One, because I didn't talk a lot. I just listened. I wanted to learn what he had to say about songwriting. One day, he turned to me at rehearsal and said, 'Advice for budding young songwriters -- I make half my songs from Danny Kaye's 'Inchworm.' Danny Kaye's 'Inchworm'? Uh, OK. He talked about Roy Orbison influencing 'Ashes to Ashes,' trying to do that falsetto high melody thing."

Life Begins For The Arnold Corns...forty Years Old Today

Arnold Corns had a strange hobby, Collecting clothes...

I'm sure you're all more than familiar with the embryonic versions of Moonage Daydream and Hang On To Yourself released on the B&C label by The Arnold Corns in the UK in May 1971.

If you were in Holland at the time, you may even have stumbled upon Moonage Dream (sic) on Philips, in the only picture sleeve issued for the single. (See above)

The project was supposedly created as a vehicle for David's new friend and future creator of many of the more memorable Bowie outfits over the next few years, Freddie Burretti, aka Rudi Valentino for this project. But, it was really a way of David recording new material anonymously to avoid record company complications.

Backed by Mark Carr-Pritchard on guitar, Peter De Somogyl on bass and Tim Broadbent on drums, (all members of Rungk) the lead vocal is clearly David with no evidence of Freddie on the recordings at all. There is another voice joining David on the chorus, which I suppose is most likely to be Carr-Pritchard, but I could be wrong.

The publicity material for this first single from The Arnold Corns utilised a Brian Ward shot that featured on the front of a 'sex education' magazine called Curious. Even the Dutch picture cover was lifted from this same shot which appears in colour above.

Thankfully, the record didn't race to the top of the singles chart, otherwise, (following the success of Peter Noone's version of Oh! You Pretty Things) DB may have become convinced that his future lay in songwriting for others rather than performing his songs under his own name.

The version of Moonage Daydream recorded later in the year for Ziggy Stardust is far superior and a more vital recording than the plodding Arnold Corns version, likewise Hang On To Yourself.

Shortening the name to Arnold Corns didn't prove any more successful for the next single, released in August 1972, for which Hang On To Yourself was elevated to A-side status. This 45 was seen as an attempt by B&C to cash-in on the success of Ziggy Stardust.

A previously unreleased song, Man In The Middle, featuring Mark Carr-Pritchard on lead vocals backed by The Spiders became the B-side...but that release isn't forty until next year, so more of that story then.

See the Arnold Corns section on Lanky Pearson's Visual Discography of David Bowie 7" vinyl for label variations and general nerdy excitement.

Bowie Jd Set From Glasgow Online And On C4 Tonight

Everything will be alright tonight...

Despite being listed as The JD Set: London, not only in the official Channel 4 listings, but on SKY planner and elsewhere too, tonight's Channel 4 broadcast will actually be the Bowie JD Set recorded in Glasgow at the O2 ABC2 on Wednesday 20th April, that we first told you about a couple of months back. (03.14.2011 NEWS: JACK DANIELS ALL-STAR BOWIE TRIBUTE IN GLASGOW NEXT MONTH) At least that's what the lady in the know at Channel 4 told me last week.

The broadcast is only around fifteen minutes long, so I'm guessing they will be showing the songs as highlighted in the animation above. Meanwhile, you can view a set of different Bowie songs from rehearsals, as listed below, on the official JD Set site...

Sharleen Spiteri - Rebel Rebel (with Steve Mason) and Life On Mars?
Ian McCulloch - The Prettiest Star
Kid Adrift - Andy Warhol
Ramona - Five Years

The programme actually airs after midnight tonight, so strictly speaking it's on Friday morning at 00:50 hours. If you miss this first broadcast, don't forget there's always Channel 4 + 1 an hour later and 4OD online.

The aforementioned London set is worth a look too if you haven't already seen it. It's Tim Wheeler of Ash performing the songs of The Pixies with various other groups backing him. At one point Tim credits The Pixies and David Bowie for the sci-fi influence on Ash songs such as the excellent Girl From Mars.

Take A Look At The Iman No. 1 Art Print By David Bowie

Sees the pictures of herself...

Just a quick one for those of you wondering which print David Bowie's IMAN No. 1 is, after reading this line in yesterday's press release...

"Bowie's art print, IMAN No. 1, will be unveiled at Design on a Dime, and will make its online debut on 20x200 on Thursday, May 12, 2011."

If you can't wait until Thursday, we can reveal that IMAN No. 1 is the print illustrated above that used to be available via BowieArt.com, though it was just listed as Iman there.

The lady herself used four of the prints to great effect when she decorated the Mercedes Benz Star Lounge at Lincoln Center for New York Fashion Week back in September 2010.

Find out more about www.20x200.com in aforementioned press release. (05.05.2011: LTD EDTN BOWIE PRINTS OF IMAN TO BE AUCTIONED)

The interior designers among you may be wondering what the wallpaper print in the background above is.

Well, I'm not sure but I think you'll find it in the IMAN home fabric range, where my eye took a bit of a shine to the Punjab Peacock in Radicchio, not to mention the delicious Deauville Dance in Gem.

Platinum Bob Award And Personalised Cd On Ebay

Under the moonlight, the serious moonlight...

The above is best explained via the eBay blurb...

Very generous of Mr Stockton to donate such a great item, but then again, I'm sure you'll agree with him in that it is for a most deserving cause.

Sadly, this one is already way out of my league seeing as it's currently at £1,550.00 GBP (approximately $2,555.80 USD) and that's still with nine days left to go!

If you do feel like going for it, don't forget that David Bowie himself has said he will be happy to personally sign a Best of Bowie CD with a dedication to the auction winner or recipient of the winner's choice.

Japanese Space Oddity 45 Sets All-time Auction High

You've really made the grade...

An extremely rare Japanese promo of the Philips Space Oddity/Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud 45 has sold at auction in Japan for a staggering 2,113,100 JPY, which translates to approximately 26,119.50 USD or 15,794.22 GBP! (That's Yen, American dollars and British quids in case you're wondering.) And it didn't even have the inner generic Philips bag. How mental is that?

The seven-day auction which ran from April 13th to 20th took place on the Yahoo! Japan auction site, which may have actually narrowed the audience to some degree. Who knows what it might have fetched had it been listed on eBay.com.

Originally released in January 1970, surely this forty-one-year-old 7" is now a contender for the most expensive commercially released single of all time, albeit a promo.

I think the previous record was the withdrawn Sex Pistols' God Save The Queen on A&M for £12,675 GBP. Please let us know if you contest this theory.

Thanx to BowieNetter AsianBowie for the pointer to the original Yahoo! Japan auction, which you can view here.
