The Major Toms Do Ziggy Stardust In Nyc

New York's a go-go...

Original BowieNetters may remember a crazy young lady called Piccadilly the Puppet Girl from way back when. She's now known worldwide as comedy singing superstar Carla Rhodes and she's been in touch with details of a gig at Arlene?s Grocery in New York on Sunday evening.

Owen Comaskey and The Major Toms will be performing David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust album in it's entirety from 9:30pm. Here's a bit from Owen himself...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Too early to get the holidays started? We think not, come and join us for a night of great live music. I'll be performing The Ziggy Album, sides 1 and 2, along with Adam and Charlie Roth, the fab Alec Morton and the return of Mighty Joe Vincent on drums.

Kicking the night off, George Gilmore and Scott Kitchen, followed by Johnny Chan and that'll do it for the old folks. Ending the night one of the best young unsigned bands around, Dirty Fences. Don't miss them, they f..ing ROCK, all this for a mere $5, Happy Holidays. - O.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So if you need a hair-of-the-dog after the previous night's Bowie Ball in NYC, then pop along to Arlene?s Grocery at 95 Stanton Street, and carry on with the Bowie fun.

Berlin Is Last Chance To See Clark's Come, Been, Gone

Well, he's come, been and gone...

If you're kicking your heels in Berlin tonight or tomorrow, chances are you're a Michael Clark dancer warming up a bit!

However, if you're anywhere near Haus der Berliner Festspiele in Berlin with nothing to do, and you like your dance with a bit of Bowie, Reed and Pop thrown in, then this is for you.

I've been carping on about this production since March and I finally got to see it twice at The Barbican in October and November.

All I can really say without going in to an in-depth review about something I know nothing about is, just go!

It's a breathtaking performance, brilliantly danced and choreographed to just about the best soundtrack I've ever heard at a theatrical event.

Even the attention to detail is astonishing. From the music played in the intervals to the 7" 45 single-sized programme with fold-out poster, above. (Tried to get some for a contest but the girls in Michael's office don't seem to want to help.)

There's also a clever injection of humour before one of the pieces that Michael himself dances in when the voice of John Peel enquires: "Are you going to be doing gigs with this band?" To which DB laughingly responds... "Well, looking at them, no! (more laughter) Yes, we're going to do some gigs...are we Michael?" Clever stuff.

You can hear that dialogue for yourself following The Width Of A Circle on Bowie At The Beeb. So, well-researched whoever found that, unless Michael was aware of it himself...which he probably was.

Go here for further details of the final performances tonight and tomorrow...not sure if Michael plans to tour it anywhere next year, but Saturday night is the last performance of it this year.

I'll leave you with the schedule for come, been, gone.

I should tell you, if you are attending, that come, been, gone is preceded by an older work of Michael's, entitled Swamp, that is set to the music of Bruce Gilbert and Wire. I loved it, but it's not as accessible as come, been, gone.

Whether you intend to catch Swamp or not, (it would be rude not to) try and catch the interval music before come, been, gone...you'll like it!

Signed Calendar Contest Extended By One Week

This week dragged past me so slowly...

Had a couple of e-mails today from people claiming to have missed this contest on account of it going up at Thanksgiving...so, in the spirit of the season and to keep things fair for everybody, we have decided to extend the competition by one week.

See last week's news item (11.26.2009 NEWS: THANKSGIVING CONTEST EVERY THURSDAY UNTIL 2010) if you've not entered yet and bear in mind that the contest now closes at midnight New York time next Wednesday December 9th, with the ten winners being announced the next day.

Because of this delay we will now be running a contest for BowieNet members every Thursday right up to Thursday January 7th, 2010...the day before DB's birthday.

Speaking of David Bowie contests...

Space Oddity 40th Anniversary Edition Cd Winners

Got to keep searching and searching...

OK folx...I'm posting the winners in this much-delayed announcement for the Space Oddity 40th Anniversary Limited Edition CD contest we set back in October. (10.12.2009 NEWS: SPACE ODDITY 40TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION CDs TO BE WON)

The delay is down to the fact that we'll be running another contest to win more copies of the CD and the vinyl with hopefully a little something extra that I can't announce right now.

So if the five members below would like to hold fire until that contest is announced, then they will automatically have the something extra included too. Here are the five...

gmoney
ikehatabin
jungtheforeman
tenimmo
zig

To be in with a chance of winning one of the CD packages, all the above members had to do was identify three of the seven elements in the animation of George Underwood's painting, (above) that were later recycled for other Bowie-related stuff. (See the original contest item for more detail.)

The first of the three was the Pierrot and the old lady, recreated for the 1980 Ashes To Ashes video...

Next up was the little alien figure later reproduced as STARMAN in a sheet of RCA promotional decals for the Ziggy Stardust album, and even later for George Underwood's beautiful set of Ziggy Stardust pins.

In the illustration below I've also included George's original drawing (far right) for clarity...

Finally, the one that seemed to stump most of you, even though the solution had been posted on BowieNet back in August, (08.16.2009 NEWS: BECKENHAM FREE FESTIVAL FORTY YEARS AGO TODAY) was the 1970 UK press advert for the Memory Of A Free Festival single.

As I say, if you five winners could hang fire for now, we'll post your names again in the winners of the next Space Oddity 40th Anniversary CD and vinyl contest, so you too can claim the "something extra"!

Wow...that was fun, wasn't it?

FOOTNOTE: You can still buy George's Ziggy Stardust pin set here. I honestly believe these are a sound investment and a valuable future collectable.

David Bowie 2cd Deram Deluxe Edition Due Next Year

In the corner of the morning in the past...

Due on January 25th, 2010, through Deram/Universal is the above deluxe edition of The Deram Album. This fifty three track, 2CD release finally gives the LP the treatment it deserves...forty two years on from its original June 1st, 1967, release!

Dismissed by casual Bowie observers as unimportant, this LP has always been a favourite among long-term fans as it introduced many of the themes that Bowie would revisit in later, more commercially successful works...not to mention the fact that it contains a whole bunch of great tunes.

Even Bowie himself must have a bit of a soft spot for this material as he re-recorded some of the songs for the aborted 2001 Toy album.

I know most of the information regarding this release was leaked ahead of the agreed publish date, but aside from the complete stereo and mono versions of the album on Disc 1, (first time on CD for the mono mix) here's a little extra detail of what's on Disc 2...

Speaking of which...

Thanksgiving Contest Every Thursday Until 2010

Thursday's Child...

Looking for a different way to mark Thanksgiving this year, (I got bored with the turkey angle...it's silly) I thought it would be cool if we could all join in the celebrations...well us Europeans feel a bit left out. Don't know about the rest of you.

So, every Thursday right up to Thursday December 31st we'll be running a contest for BowieNet members and the majority of the prizes (if not all) will carry David Bowie's autograph!

First up is the 2010 official calendar signed by both David Bowie and Mick Rock...as above.

We'll keep this first one very easy as half of you are possibly too stuffed to move or hog-whimpering drunk...or both!

All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning one of these hugely collectable and breathtakingly beautiful babies is identify the shot on the cover above.

The venue, the month and the year will suffice.

E-mail your answer to me here. We'll run this one until midnight New York time next Wednesday December 2nd, with the ten winners being announced the next day.

Usual BowieNet rules apply: Only one entry per BowieNet account and please remember you must enter using your BowieNet e-mail or at least supply your BowieNet user name. If you do neither of these things you won't be eligible to enter.

Good luck kidz.

Yellowbeard Region 2 Dvd Winners And Johnny Vann!

So I felt like an actor...

OK, more competition results. We posted this contest last month (10.20.2009 NEWS: YELLOWBEARD AVAILABLE ON REGION 2 DVD - WIN ONE NOW) in which we gave members the chance to win one of five Yellowbeard Region 2 DVDs courtesy of Optimum Home Entertainment.

All you had to do to be in with a chance of winning was identify the six shady characters above, including the films associated with each one of them and the name of the characters portrayed therein.

Here's what you should have concluded from left to right...

The Last Temptation Of Christ / Pontius Pilate
Il mio West (aka Gunslinger's Revenge) / Jack Sikora
Absolute Beginners / Vendice Partners
Basquiat / Andy Warhol
The Man Who Fell To Earth / Thomas Jerome Newton
Into The Night / Colin Morris

And these are the five BowieNetters that The Random Generator chose to smile upon today...

Arabia
m.art
motherofsephy
peterbraster
unicorn

Well done folx, please furnish me with your name and address and you'll have your DVD before you can say Bernie from B.U.S.T.E.D.

On a final note...I do always say with these contests that you must enter using your BowieNet e-mail or at least supply your BowieNet user name...and that if you do neither of these things you won't be eligible to enter.

Well the chap on the right in the picture above, Johnny Vann, was selected as somebody who had supplied all six answers correctly...however, he didn't use his BowieNet e-mail or supply his BowieNet user name.

I do try to be fair in these things, so I called him and he explained that he wasn't in fact a member but just liked to take part in the contests anyway!

As a consolation prize I agreed to post the above picture of him meeting David Bowie in March 1987 while filming the video for Underground in Stratford, East London...which must have been a prize that's pretty hard to beat!

The Sovereign Returns To The Venture Brothers

Brilliant Adventure...

I know there are a few of you who follow The Venture Brothers and the exploits of The Sovereign...The Sovereign being the secret identity of criminal overlord, David Bowie!

As you know, The Sovereign has been a character since the season 2 finale, Showdown at Cremation Creek (episode 26) in 2006, when he appeared with Iggy Pop and Klaus Nomi as his villainous sidekicks.

The appearance of David Bowie in the popular toon even made the New York Daily News last year.

Anyway, He's back and you can view his latest appearance over at Adult Swim in The Revenge Society, wherein Watch and Ward alert The Sovereign to the treacherous actions of the Phantom Limb while also reassuring Bowie that 'hours...' is a fine album.

Mental.

Seven Bowie Lps In 1001 Albums You Must Hear Book...

Listen to me...

Speaking of popular Bowie recordings, (see yesterday's news item) due in March next year is the third edition of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die by Robert Dimery and Michael Lydon, the latter being the founding editor of Rolling Stone.

As you probably guessed, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die is a musical reference book and the current second edition consists of a list of albums released between 1955 and 2005, though next year's third edition will be brought up to date.

The book is arranged chronologically and each entry in the list is accompanied by a short essay written by a noted music critic. Each entry also has pictures, quotes, and additional information such as the album's running time and producer.

David Bowie has seven albums listed, equalled only by The Beatles and Bob Dylan. Here they are...

Hunky Dory (1971)
The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (1972)
Aladdin Sane (1973)
Young Americans (1975)
Station To Station (1976)
Low (1977)
"Heroes" (1977)

Here's an excerpt from the Ziggy Stardust entry (pictured above) written by Robert Dimery himself...

Joining the Bowie albums are three from Iggy Pop: Raw Power (1973), The Idiot (1977) and Lust For Life (1977) and a couple of Lou Reed albums: Transformer (1972) and Berlin (1973). As you know, Bowie had a hand in the making of four of these albums to a lesser or, more accurately, greater degree.

Go here to check out the full listing.

Reality In The Sunday Times Top 100 Albums Of The Decade

The Times they are a-telling...

It's all in the headline...and here's what The Times had to say about Reality, which made #46 in the list...

Reality - David Bowie (Columbia, 2003) A melancholy, unvarnished collection of simply fine songs in which the pop chameleon reveals something of his true colours at last. This perfectly distils the formidable songwriting wisdom of a great artist in the autumn of his career.

Hard to disagree with that. I know Reality has its detractors, but perhaps it's time you gave it another spin if you're among them...New Killer Star, Pablo Picasso, Never Get Old, The Loneliest Guy, Looking For Water, She'll Drive The Big Car, Days, Fall Dog Bombs The Moon, Try Some, Buy Some, Reality, Bring Me The Disco King...to name but eleven of the great tracks on this album.

You can see the full list at timesonline.

Signed 'hours...' Press Folder And Promo Cds Winner

And I hid under blank tiles...

OK, sorry for the delay on these contest results folx, but they will all be announced over the following week with a few more great contests to come.

See the original contest if you're not sure what this one's all about (10.07.2009 NEWS: 'hours...' IS TEN - WIN SIGNED PRESS FOLDER AND PROMO CDs) suffice to say that you were attempting to win the stuff above with the answer below...

The great majority of you got this right though a couple of you actually managed to identify six missing tiles somehow!

Anyway, BowieNetter Stevie identified the correct five missing tiles: A4 , A5 , C1, D2, D4, as in the solution above.

Stevie has already been informed...better luck next time to the rest of you...the next time (for another signed Bowie item at least) being very soon.

Kevin Grady Interview At Lost In A Supermarket

You've really made the Grady... (Sorry Kevin)

Editor-in-Chief and Creative Director of LEMON, Kevin Grady, was interviewed over on Lost In A Supermarket last month. Here's a snippet...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you?re an obvious fan of Bowie, did you discover anything cool/weird/intriguing about him while putting together the issue?

Keanan Duffty (fashion designer, musician and TV host) said that Bowie told him he doesn?t consider himself as someone who?s particularly interested in fashion, or something to that effect. That was a pretty surprising thing to hear.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aside from the interview, Kevin was asked to make Lost In A Supermarket a soundtrack to the new issue of LEMON. This is what he came up with....

?Life on Mars?? Seu Jorge
?Bowie? Flight of the Conchords
?Sound and Vision? Matthew Dear
?Heroes? TV on the Radio
?Major Tom? Shiny Toy Guns
?Kilometer? Sebastien Tellier
?Daft Punk Is Playing at My House? LCD Soundsystem
?In Dark Trees? Brian Eno
?Queen Bitch? David Bowie
?U Can Dance (featuring Bryan Ferry)? DJ Hell

You can hear the tracks and read the interview here.

We ARE still running our contest for signed copies of LEMON, (10.18.2009 NEWS: LEMON HEROES SIGNED COPIES - LEMONLAND.NET WINNERS) and, as bizarre as it sounds, I can tell you we will be running it from December 17th...all will be revealed.

Space Oddity Released In Usa Today

Lift off...

As we told you back in September, (09.22.2009 NEWS: SPACE ODDITY RELEASE MOVED TO NOVEMBER IN USA) the Space Oddity 40th Anniversary Edition is released in the US today.

The album is issued in the same formats as it has already been released elsewhere...those formats being 2CD set, heavyweight vinyl in gatefold sleeve and digital download.

The album was originally released in America as MAN OF WORDS/MAN OF MUSIC on the Mercury label with a completely different sleeve to the original UK version.

However, it did utilise the George Underwood painting, The Depth of the Circle, on the reverse, albeit a smaller version. (See above)

I'm planning to do a round-up of all the variations of this album in the near future...please get in touch if you think you have something regarding it that may be of interest.

Budget Stopps Remembers Bowie At Aylesbury

Ain't that poster love?

We've posted a fair bit on these pages regarding Aylesbury Friars over the last year or so, (04.04.2009 NEWS: BOWIE AT FRIARS REVIEWS IN NEW ROXETTE MAGAZINE & 02.13.2009 NEWS: OFFICIAL FRIARS AYLESBURY COMPENDIUM UPDATED & 05.07.2008 NEWS: OFFICIAL FRIARS AYLESBURY COMPENDIUM IS LIVE) and now Mike O'Connor who runs The official FRIARS Aylesbury compendium has told us about his most recent interview which is with Budget Stopps, the wife of Friars promoter, David Stopps.

Budget was instrumental in putting on the first Bowie gig at the venue and she designed many of the posters, so familiar with locals, including the two Bowie related ones above. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That (Groundhogs April 1971)was the saviour gig wasn't it? Without that, there would have been no Bowie, no Mott The Hoople...

I think one of the things that helped put the club on the map was the Bowie gig in 1971. That was my connection (laughs). Nobody had heard of him, but I was a huge fan as he had written stuff for my ex husband (a musician) and I couldn't understand why he wasn't recording it himself. I had a demo tape of Bowie which I played to David and later when we were offered him through the music business, we snapped him up and got him when nobody else knew who he was. We had 700 people at that first gig. People were coming up from London. That was the beginning really - it was the first night he had played with Mick Ronson.

I've heard a bootleg of that gig and what surprised me was how nervous he seemed to be.

He was a very different person then! He was with Angie Bowie and had long hair. He was wearing all these long flowing clothes. If you imagine the cover of The Man Who Sold The World album, that's what he looked like. He loved Friars, it's close to his heart and you should try to find him to interview him! That gig was important for us and for him.

© 2009 Mike O'Connor/www.aylesburyfriars.co.uk

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm presuming the ex husband that Budget mentions is Les Payne whose band, Chameleon, were given a demo of Star by Bowie in early 1971 with a view to them recording it as a single. The song was recorded by Chameleon but never released. The demo was markedly different to the version that eventually surfaced on Ziggy Stardust and you can read more about it over at The Ziggy Stardust Companion.

Stay tuned for further accounts of the Bowie Friars gigs by local man Rick Pearce and read the full Budget interview here.
