Comedian Soupy Sales Dies In New York Aged 83

Goodbye Mr S...

Sad to report the passing of the custard pie king, comedian Soupy Sales, who died on Thursday night at Calvary Hospice in the Bronx, New York. He had many health problems and entered the hospice last week.

Sales was 83 and is survived by his wife, Trudy, and two sons, Hunt and Tony, who will be familiar to you as the rhythm section of Tin Machine and Iggy Pop's 1977 band.

You can view the AP report of Soupy's death here and while you're on YouTube take a look at this low quality video of Tony and The Tigers being introduced by their father for their first TV appearance.

Our thoughts are with Hunt and Tony and their mother, and, along with David, we would like to pass on our condolences to them.

Two Page Bowie Appreciation In Newstatesman

He flows through your life...

There's a two-page spread in the current NewStatesman (26 October 2009) with the wonderfully punning headline Hallowed spaceboy and that is summed up thus in the standfirst: "Over 40 years, David Bowie has repeatedly reinvented himself, pursuing the idea that all pop is artifice. Graeme Thomson surveys the career of a revered innovator."

It's a well balanced piece that concludes with the following...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Above all, I love how Bowie has never succumbed to peddling "sincerity", the dread, dishonest concept that creeps into the body of pop and calcifies its bones. All great pop is artifice, and Bowie stands as the Platonic ideal: a glorious, fluid, preposterous, inspired, contrived fabrication that changed the outline of our cultural terrain permanently.

?In art you can crash your plane and walk away from it. If you have that chance, you should take it." Coming from anyone else - Madonna, or, more likely, Bono - this would be laughably delusional. From Bowie's lips, amid the carefully calibrated doses of pretension and preciousness, it has the sharp tang of truth. If he has destroyed more conceptual jumbo jets than he or we may care to recall, that is simply the price of flying so high, so far, for so long.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry, I know that's a bit like giving the punchline away first, but the whole thing really is worth a read...and you can do just that, here.

Michael Clark Praises Bowie Ahead Of London Shows

Sailor can't dance like you...

There's a new Michael Clark interview in the free London newspaper METRO ahead of his stint at The Barbican next week.

We've been telling you about Clark's new work for a while now, originally entitled Thank U Ma'am and now called come, been and gone, I wouldn't be surprised if it had a new name before The Barbican shows with the way Michael is talking about changing the piece.

This restlessness is reflected in the Keith Watson-conducted METRO interview: "Some of the songs I felt I just couldn't do anything good enough to. I keep wanting to change it all. I want to do three versions of Heroes now. If the dance comes anywhere close to the way the music has made me feel, then I've achieved something."

Clark also explained how the music of David Bowie spurred him on to try something new: "After three years of Stravinsky, I wanted a serious change. Songs like Jean Genie are so energetic you've got a lot of freedom to do all sorts of things. I wanted to do something that felt different."

You can read the full interview here and you may want to check out these previous news items if you haven't been following this story...

Yellowbeard Available On Region 2 Dvd - Win One Now

The return of the fin white duke...

Apparently this one slipped out back in July...the 20th to be precise. However, BowieNetter Jesus John Allison (sic) has only just told us about it so it's pretty much his fault really. Thanx anyway, John.

Yellowbeard has been available on Region 1 DVD for some time but it hadn't been looking too good for a Region 2 release....it's here now, packed with exciting extras...well, the trailer at least.

Anyway, those who know the film will recognise The Shark from the still above, though I have to point out that the DVD doesn't actually come flying through the door in the film as it does in our picture.

However, it could come flying through your door as Optimum Home Entertainment have generously promised us five copies of the Region 2 DVD to give to you.

All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning is identify the six films associated with the shots of Bowie in the above montage and the name of each character portrayed.

You can use any version of the film title. For example, if you think the little grey fellow in the background is from Everybody Loves Sunshine, you could answer thus...

Film title = B.U.S.T.E.D. Name of character played by Bowie = Bernie (The film was originally known as Everybody Loves Sunshine, however, that "little grey fellow" definitely wasn't in it!)

When you think you have all six answers, email me here with them. We'll run this one until midnight New York time on Saturday October 31st, with the five winners being announced shortly thereafter.

Usual BowieNet rules apply: Only one entry per BowieNet account and please remember you must enter using your BowieNet e-mail or at least supply your BowieNet user name. If you do neither of these things you won't be eligible to enter.

Simples innit kidz!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

REMINDER: Don't forget the two other BowieNet contests that end shortly:

10.07.2009 NEWS: 'hours...' IS TEN - WIN SIGNED PRESS FOLDER AND PROMO CDs
Ends midnight New York time on Friday October 23rd

10.12.2009 NEWS: SPACE ODDITY 40TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION CDs TO BE WON

Untitled Tribute To David Bowie Put Back Three Months

Strange games for May...

We told you very little about this album back in July (07.16.2009 NEWS: UNTITLED TRIBUTE TO DAVID BOWIE DUE NEXT YEAR) and I can't really see any reason for that lack of new information to change aside from the fact that the Untitled Tribute To David Bowie has been put back to May with the full line-up being announced in January.

Having said that, from what I've seen of the line-up so far, it's definitely going to be worth the wait. Meanwhile, check out the Manimal Vinyl Records label MySpace for a flavour of what they're about.

Lemon Heroes Signed Copies - Lemonland.net Winners

LEMON in the bag...

LEMON has announced the two winners of their signed copies that they set a contest for back in May. (05.28.2009 NEWS: LEMON HEROES IS OUT NOW - WIN SIGNED COPIES)

For their chance to win, readers had to identify the chrome blob on the left-hand page, above. Not too hard, and it seems two BowieNetters would agree with that as these members were the winners...

Johnnie Seven from Eugene, Oregon and Michael Erla from Wayne, New Jersey.

Well done to the both of you, your signed LEMON "Heroes" should be with you shortly.

The publication also ran a contest to win three copies of Criterion Collection?s DVD issue of The Man Who Fell To Earth. (06.04.2009 NEWS: WIN CRITERION TMWFTE DVDs FROM WORLD ENTERPRISES)

It seems these winners were also BowieNetters and it honestly wasn't fixed! Here they are just the same...Maarten Kwant from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Mikael Soderholm of Stockholm, Sweden and Lisa Stanley from Houston, Texas, USA.

These three pointed out an error in an advert in LEMON for www.water.org wherein it was stated that David Bowie plays Walter Tevis in the film!

Check out www.LemonLand.net for more on both these contests and details of recent praise for the LEMON "Heroes" issue in the media.

We will be running our own contest for five signed copies shortly, but with two contests already in progress (10.07.2009 NEWS: 'hours...' IS TEN - WIN SIGNED PRESS FOLDER AND PROMO CDs & 10.12.2009 NEWS: SPACE ODDITY 40TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION CDs TO BE WON) and a third about go to live, we thought we'd give it another week or so.

For my child and your child too...

David Bowie and Iman are pictured above at the Hammerstein Ballroom during Keep A Child Alive's 6th Annual Black Ball hosted by Alicia Keys and Padma Lakshmi on October 15, 2009 in New York City.

The do was populated by many a recognisable visage, including this bunch: Gabriel Aubry, Swizz Beatz, Tyson Beckford, Halle Berry, Mary J. Blige, Sir Richard Branson, Nick Cannon, Stephen Dorff, Estelle, Adrian Grenier, Tommy Hilfiger, Rachel Hunter, Samuel L Jackson, Gayle King, Queen Latifa, Spike Lee, Roland Martin, Londell McMillan, Dee Ocleppo, Tyler Perry, Antonio "L.A." Aside from Alicia Keys, the musical guests for the evening were the African Children's Choir, Chris Martin of Coldplay, John Mayer and Youssou N'Dour all of whom performed with Alicia as well as doing their own thing.

Iman's dress for the evening was created by Thai-American designer, Thakoon Panichgul. Bowie was comfortable in his favoured Aquascutum shirt and suit with Yves Saint Laurent pocket handkerchief and boots by Dior.

Chris Martin wore an approximate version of The Thin White Duke, circa The 1976 World Tour...an outfit you can see for yourself on the WireImage.com the WireImage.com Keep A Child Alive's 6th Annual Black Ball page .

As ever, thanx to Kevin Mazur and WireImage.com for the use of exclusive pictures.

Duffy Talks About Aladdin Sane Shoot On Bbc

Lightning Frightening...

The BBC's Finlo Rohrer has interviewed photographer Brian Duffy for the BBC News Magazine, ahead of a Duffy retrospective at the Chris Beetles gallery in London which opens to the public today, October 15th.

As you know, Brian is the man responsible for the brilliant photographic images of DB that adorn the Lodger, Scary Monsters and Ashes To Ashes covers...not to mention the image above.

The BBC item first appeared over a week ago. However, I didn't post it initially as I'm not sure how accurate Duffy's claims regarding the inspiration for the Aladdin Sane lightning bolt are.

I'm no surer about them now, but here's what he said either way...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perhaps his best known image remains the cover of the David Bowie album Aladdin Sane. Today, the image might have been produced with a generous sprinkling of Photoshop trickery. Then, everything was a bit more manual.

"Bowie was interested in the Elvis ring which had the letters TCB [taking care of business] as well as a lightning flash."

It was decided that Bowie would have a flash on his face. Duffy drew inspiration from the mundane objects in his studio and, along with make-up artist Pierre La Roche, copied the red and blue flash off a National Panasonic rice cooker lying nearby.

"I drew on his face the design... [we] used lipstick to fill in the red," he says.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sadly, I haven't managed to track down anything resembling the "red and blue flash off a National Panasonic rice cooker", but if any of you reading this know of it, please let us know.

Duffy famously torched much of his work in 1979...not sure if it was before the Lodger shoot though. If so, then it's possible that only the Scary Monsters session survives.

If this was the case it goes some way to explaining why we've never seen any outtakes from the Aladdin Sane session, aside from one alternate shot on a 1973 tour leaflet.

Fingers crossed that Duffy wasn't quite mad enough to burn any of his Bowie stuff though.

Beatles To Bowie Exhibition Opens Thursday

I keep a photograph, It burns my wall with time...

I attended the press preview of Beatles to Bowie: The 60s exposed at the National Portrait Gallery in London earlier today and I'm pretty sure I'll be going back for a second browse very soon.

We first told you about the exhibition back in June (06.25.2009 NEWS: RARE BOWIE SHOTS AT NPG BEATLES TO BOWIE EXHIBITION) when we exclusively revealed three of the Bowie photographs on display.

By my reckoning, there are at least seven Bowie portraits now, not to mention a few colour magazine spreads with Bowie features from the period...this includes what must be the very first full page colour Bowie pin-up from a September issue of Fabulous 208.

I'll hopefully reproduce some of those articles here or on the MBs in the not too distant future as I have them all in my own collection.

As you can see from the snap above, the press pack featured Bowie pretty heavily, with the A4+ format folder revealing a David Wedgbury 1966 shot on the inside cover (along with postcard of same) and a colour David Bebbington photo from 1969 on one of the leaflets inside.

I'm hoping to receive a couple of these for a BowieNet contest along with the exhibition catalogue which includes every image in the exhibition as a full-page reproduction. The catalogue is in fact a fully illustrated hardback book by curator Terence Pepper, with an essay by Jon Savage.

Here's a list of all the Bowie photographers with the corresponding year of the picture on show...

Cyrus Andrews 1965
Fiona Adams 1965
David Wedgbury 1966
Peter Freeman 1967
Dubreq 1969
David Bebbington 1969
Steve Campbell 1970

For those of that can't wait to either attend or wait for the contest, you can purchase everything Bowie-related from the online NPG store, including the exhibition poster at the top of this item. Follow the links below...

Beatles to Bowie exhibition postcards

Beatles to Bowie: The 60s exposed is at the National Portrait Gallery in London from tomorrow (October 15th) through to January 24th 2010. Go here for times and ticket details.

Btw, almost forget...there are tons of fascinating photographs and ephemera regarding other lesser known stars of the sixties such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, etc.

Space Oddity 40th Anniversary Edition Cds Contest

My mother said to get things done, You'd better not mess with Major Tom...

To mark today's release of the Space Oddity 40th Anniversary Limited Edition CD and digital download in Europe, EMI has kindly donated five of the rather tasty CD packages.

Apart from the fantastic music, (which alone makes this the best repackage of Space Oddity ever released) the booklet contains excellent and informative notes by Bowie expert Kevin Cann, not to mention lots of interesting pictorial stuff.

This is all housed in a beautiful triple digi-pack which, among other things, features reproductions of David's original roughs for George Underwood's The Depth Of The Circle painting that appeared on the back cover of the original album.

In the animation above, I've superimposed David's original drawing with seven of the elements that George recreated from the drawing for the painting.

To be in with a chance of winning one of the CD packages, all you have to do is identify three of those seven elements that were later used again for Bowie-related stuff.

To give you a bit of a clue, one of the elements was used in a press advert for a Bowie single, one was used for an RCA promotional sheet of skin transfers (decals) and the final one was recreated in a Bowie video.

Now all you have to do to be in with a chance of winning the Space Oddity 40th Anniversary Limited Edition CD is email me here with more specific details of how each of the three elements was used.

For example, if you think the element of the two spacemen planting a flower was recreated for the Little Wonder video, then have that as one of the three...though, I can tell you that that isn't one before you waste your time. I'm generous like that.

As this contest won't be so easy for everybody, we're running it until midnight New York time on Sunday October 25th, with the five winners being announced shortly thereafter.

Usual BowieNet rules apply: Only one entry per BowieNet account and please remember you must enter using your BowieNet e-mail or at least supply your BowieNet user name. If you do neither of these things you won't be eligible to enter.

Happy spotting, kidz!

Ziggy Stardust Cover Becomes First Class British Stamp

I'll stick with you baby for a thousand years...

Just in time to get a birthday card in the post to David Bowie for his 63rd birthday is the upcoming official stamp of the Ziggy Stardust album cover, which will be issued on January 10th, 2010.

The stamp will be of the first class variety (naturally) and it's one of ten in a series of classic British album covers. Here's some blurb...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Norvic Philatelics - GB New Stamps and Special Postmarks

Design Classics: Classic Album Covers - 7 January 2010

After the success of 2009?s British Design Classics, 2010 opens with a look at the classic art of the album cover. For decades the album sleeve has been the canvas for some of the most imaginative graphic artists in the world. This stamp issue salutes this unique art form and celebrates some of the greatest examples, used by UK artists.

This band of designers and photographers have not only reflected the visual styles of many musical cultures, but have also defined and created them, too. The stamp issue explores some of the most potent graphic images of modern times, many of which have provided a visual soundtrack to people?s lives.

This issue celebrates the work of the album sleeve designer, not the music. Royal Mail began with very extensive research of existing lists and polls of ?Greatest Album Covers? in books, music press and the web. This trawl of literally thousands of albums uncovered many that were common to most lists.

The editors of three of the UK?s most influential music publications together with a number of graphic designers and design writers were asked to independently list the most significant album sleeve artwork used on records by British artists.

Royal Mail reviewed all the research to assemble a shortlist of albums that spanned the decades from the 1960s. Some albums could not be included for operational reasons (for instance, designs that were too dark), after final deliberation the ten albums were arrived at.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The set will be available in the following formats...

Set of 10 self-adhesive stamps:

Sheet 1 - strip of 5
a. The Division Bell ? Pink Floyd;
b. A Rush of Blood to the Head - Coldplay;
c. Parklife ? Blur;
d. Power Corruption and Lies ? New Order;
e. Let It Bleed ? The Rolling Stones

Sheet 2 - strip of 5
a. London Calling ? The Clash;
b. Tubular Bells ? Mike Oldfield;
c. IV ? Led Zeppelin;
d. Screamadelica ? Primal Scream;
e.The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars ? David Bowie

Souvenir Sheet

In the form of a 'Best of...' album cover (see above) this sheet contains the same 10 stamps, the same size, conventionally gummed and perforated.

This sheet is 223mm x 188mm (8.8 x 7.4 inches) and there will be a special first day cover to accommodate it.

Finally, there is a Classic Album Covers Prestige Stamp Book which you can read more about here along with the technical spec and all that stuff.

The First Bowie Totps Broadcast Is Forty

Do you remember a guy, from such an early song...

David Bowie recorded his first ever TOTPs performance at the BBC in Shepherds Bush on October 2nd 1969. He was accompanied to the studio by manager Kenneth Pitt and he took his mother along for the experience too.

As producer of the single, Gus Dudgeon was on hand to oversee the recording of the backing track that David would sing his live vocal over.

The performance was broadcast the following week on October 9th, by which time the record had risen on the UK singles chart from #20 to #13.

The same appearance was rebroadcast on TOTPs on October 16th, helping the record climb even further up the chart to #8...and it didn't stop there.

Stay tuned for more memories of Major Tom shortly.

The Telegraph On Bowie's Lost Masterpiece

This is Ground Control to Major Tom, You've really made the grade...

Neil McCormick has written a thoughtful piece in the Telegraph regarding Space Oddity, the song and the album. Here are a couple of lines from it...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The album he subsequently recorded may not have proved a major success, but it freed Bowie to confidently embrace new musical ideas rather than chase trends, essaying many of the themes he would explore in his stellar Seventies incarnations, along with a kind of cynical bewilderment at the fading of Sixties ideals.

Critics generally portray Bowie?s true career arc starting with 1970?s ?The Man Who Sold The World?, but re-released next week as an anniversary double CD edition with bonus tracks, demos and alternative versions, ?Space Oddity? (the album) is revealed not as a pallid foreshadowing of his genius, but an elegiac lost masterpiece.

'hours...' Is Ten - Win Signed Press Folder And Promo Cds

Strip you down and take you to pieces...

Those of you who have been here for the long haul may remember the Building Hours panel (above) in the Special Features section of BowieNet of BowieNet.

Ten years ago the David Bowie album 'hours...' was released (October 4th UK - 5th USA) and to celebrate the release here on BowieNet, we launched Building Hours to preview both the album sleeve and the tracks on the album in a two week run up to the release.

To mark this tenth anniversary we are offering up the package below for one lucky BowieNetter in our latest contest.

The package consists of one empty 'hours...' signed by Bowie in 2000 press folder, plus the four associated card sleeve UK promo CDs:

1 - Ten-track 'hours...' promo album (CDVDJ2900)
2 - Three-track Thursday's Child promo single (VSCDJ1753)
3 - Two-track Survive promo single (VSCDJ1767)
4 - Four-track Seven promo single (SEVENDPRO1)

So, this is what we did for your contest pleasure....we took the twenty five tiles used in Building Hours, jumbled them all up and then removed five of them.

Using the above grid for reference, what you have to do is determine which five tiles we have removed from the grid below.

For example, in the grid below you can work out that the tile at top left is the tile named C2 in the grid above...So C2 can't be one of the missing tiles.

It's probably easier than it looks and sounds!

Now all you have to do to be in with a chance of winning this great prize is email me here with the names of each of the five missing tiles.

We'll give you a couple of weeks for this contest by running it until midnight New York time, Friday October 23rd, with the winner being announced shortly thereafter.

Usual BowieNet rules apply: Only one entry per BowieNet account and please remember you must enter using your BowieNet e-mail or at least supply your BowieNet user name. If you do neither of these things you won't be eligible to enter.

Happy spotting, kidz!

David Bowie And Iggy Pop Together Again...kind Of

Hold on to anyone, Hold on to anyone, But LEGO of me?

This one really seems to have caught people's imaginations...I've had lots of email already, some from excitable types looking forward to it and a couple more from folk incredulous that David Bowie and Iggy Pop are to feature in LEGO Rock Band, due early next month.

I'm sure the majority reading this understand the premise of both LEGO and Rock Band, well I don't particularly, so here's some guff...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MTV Games, Electronic Arts and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment are pleased to reveal that none other than Mr David Bowie himself is to grace Christmas blockbuster video game LEGO Rock Band ? fully LEGO-fied.

Gamers of all ages and abilities will be able to strum, drum or sing along to 80s hit ?Let?s Dance?. Bowie joins Iggy Pop in the line-up of stars immortalised as LEGO minifigures in the game.

LEGO Rock Band is the family friendly music action game with an unmatched collection of rock and pop hits ? no obscure heavy metal in this game! With new Super-Easy mode for younger players, LEGO Rock Band works with existing Guitar Hero and Rock Band peripherals and features all the customisation, humour and building you'd expect from the award winning LEGO game franchise.

Released on Sony PS3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii & DS, it?ll hit retailers shelves in November 2009 and is sure to be a massive hit with the whole family.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As they say, the Bowie track in the game is the 1983 worldwide smash, Let's Dance. The Iggy Pop song is The Passenger, one of only two songs on Iggy's 1977 Lust For Life album that DB didn't have a hand in writing. However, he did co-produce the album and he does provide backing vocals on the track.

Iggy Pop will also voice the in-game tutorials for LEGO Rock Band.

You can view a video of the LEGO Bowie performing Let's Dance on the Guardian website.

Bbc Review Of Space Oddity 40th And Press Advert

God knows it's good...

BowieNetter TP pointed me at this BBC review of the Space Oddity 40th Anniversary Limited Edition by Chris Roberts a couple of days back...I was hoping to save it for a round-up of reviews but they don't seem to be forthcoming just yet...do let us know if you spy any on your cyber travels or elsewhere.

Anyway, it's a lovely piece, from which this excerpt...

It sounds extraordinary today, so flecked with genius that the wonder is not that Bowie broke big afterwards but that he didn?t sooner. Perhaps the last great 60s album, with shades of prog and sprinkles of Sgt. Pepper?s, it?s an elegy to that decade?s corroding ideals. The climactic Memory of a Free Festival perfectly captures the desire for escape from society?s shackles that coloured the times yet also seems smart enough to mock itself, knowing that bliss is, as he puts it in another lovely ballad, An Occasional Dream.

In this blend of abandonment and self-awareness lay Bowie?s genius (a blend which later culminated in Young Americans, both completely fabricated and completely soulful). He never accepted that the textbook doesn?t allow you to be simultaneously arch and angst-ridden, and his innate ambivalence fuelled songs which proudly endure.
