Peter Murphy Releases Space Oddity Single

Down in space, its always 1982...

Peter Murphy of popular singing combo, Bauhaus, has released a 6:32 minute solo version of Space Oddity via iTunes as the second part of his Secret Cover campaign...John Lennon's Instant Karma being the first.

You may remember that Bauhaus are one of a select few that have taken a Bowie composition into the UK Top 20 singles chart, which they did with their cover of Ziggy Stardust in 1982.

It's unlikely that this release will equal the success of Bauhaus's Ziggy Stardust, but it's an affectionate and heartfelt version that I'm sure many of you will enjoy.

Peter has been closing shows on his current tour with Space Oddity apparently much to the appreciation of his audience.

Official 2010 Bowie/mick Rock Calendar Details

The days fell on their knees...

As is often the way with these things, details of this calendar have been given to Amazon by an understandably enthusiastic publisher, even before the content has been signed off.

The official 2010 calendar is published by Slow Dazzle once again (despite conflicting details on Amazon) and will be available towards the end of August/early September.

The calendar contains fourteen "Rare & Unseen" Mick Rock shots from '72/'73. This translates as five unpublished pictures with the remainder being previously published photographs, albeit in nowhere near the size and quality of these calendar versions.

The reason we were holding back on announcing was because we are still working on a BowieNet member discount, details of which to follow shortly.

Stay tuned for a sneak preview of some uncropped images from the calendar, along with a contest to win signed copies.

Well you wouldn't believe what I've been through...

Space Oddity 40th Anniversary Digi Ep And App Out Now

Shake it, shake it baby...

Well I've been up all night, shakin' it up and enjoying the results.

I'm talking about the new iPhone/iKlax Space Oddity application of course which became available along with the 40th anniversary Space Oddity EP from midnight UK time.

The application allows you to create your own mixes and save them and if you can't be bothered with anything as complex as sliding faders and muting tracks you can just shake your iPhone for a brand new mix.

It's all good fun and it's great to be able to hear each of the eight original individual stems that make up Space Oddity...including David's "Little mouse fart" sound effect! I kid you not.

You also have the opportunity to create the longest mix of this Bowie classic as the total length of this version is actually longer than the original full album version by a few seconds.

If you don't have an iPhone, it's still possible to mix the tracks in your preferred programme as the stems are available with the EP from iTunes and can be imported in to various mix applications for the PC and Mac including the free iKlax Creator software.

Go to this specially created Space Oddity 40th Anniversary page for more details including a short video that makes things a little clearer and links to buy both the Space Oddity EP and the Space Oddity App.

Shake it up, Shake it up...

Duncan's Nasa Snaps And Tony Scott's Memory Loss

This is Ground Control...

You've no doubt heard Duncan Jones make mention of his visit to NASA's Johnson Space Center back in March, when collectSPACE arranged to interview him about how NASA and other international space programs served in part as inspiration for his vision of a Helium 3 mining operation on a near future Moon.

We've been hanging on to this story in the hope that the interview that accompanies the pictures taken during Duncan's tour would be published by now.

Four months later the interview remains unpublished. However, the pictures are still worth a look and it's great to see the look of wonderment on Duncan's face as he explores the Johnson Space Center like a kid in a toy shop. Go here to view the pictures.

Meanwhile, director Tony Scott was recently interviewed by The Huffington Post on his latest movie, a remake of The Taking of Pelham 123.

After talking about the problems associated with shooting on the subway, Tony recalled an abandoned scene he tried to shoot with David Bowie on the subway for The Hunger. This brought the interviewer neatly round to ask a question about Duncan Jones.

I'll leave you with that question and Tony's hilarious response...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Speaking of The Hunger, did you know that David Bowie's son, Duncan Jones, had his film, Moon, released the same time as yours?

TS: Shit! I saw Duncan the other day in L.A. I forgot he was David's son!

Media Blitz As Moon Opens Nationwide In The Uk Today

Hooked to the silver screen...

If you've been awake over the last few days you can't have failed to notice Duncan Jones in the UK media....Including TV, Radio and the press.

It seems that the UK media is a little more obsessed with Duncan's family line than most, but he seems to have come to terms with the inevitability of that and is handling this line of questioning with intelligence and his usual good humour.

Sadly there's not enough time to keep track of it all on these pages, but here are links to some of the recent more interesting pieces...

The Guardian - July 16th - Film Weekly - Audio interview with Jason Solomons

LBC 97.3FM - July 16th - By The Light Of The Moon - Audio interview with Jeni Barnett

Time Out - July 15th - Duncan Jones talks ?Moon?

Telegraph - July 14th - Duncan Jones on filming 'Moon' By Vicki Reid

Sky News - July 13th - Video interview - Bowie Son Over The Moon With Film

There has been tons more stuff which you can find via a Google search.

MOON opens today in the UK. Go here to search current listings in your area.

Emi Releases Digi-singles For 60th Anniversary Of The 45

Blue Jean, look out world, you know I've got mine...

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the vinyl 45 single, EMI has released thirty five hits bundled with their B-sides via iTunes. Here's the official blurb...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

60TH ANNIVERSARY OF 45 SINGLE CELEBRATED BY EMI MUSIC WITH 'DIGITAL 45' CAMPAIGN LAUNCHING JULY 14 - EMI's Single Celebration Begins Exclusively at iTunes with More Than 35 Hits Bundled with B-sides & Replicated Label Art for Download Purchase

Hollywood, California - July 14, 2009 - To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the vinyl 45 single, EMI Music is launching a 'digital 45' campaign on July 14, bundling hit singles with B-sides and replicated label art for download purchase. EMI's digital 45s will be included in iTunes D45, a showcase for these new digital bundles on iTunes.

They will be exclusively sold by iTunes between July 14 and July 27, after which they will be available for download purchase from all major digital service providers.

More than 35 digital singles will launch the campaign, including original 45 single A-sides and B-sides and top hits by Coldplay, David Bowie, R.E.M., Poison, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dean Martin, Duran Duran, Nat King Cole, Blondie, and Billy Idol, among others.

The 45 single, pressed on 7" vinyl, debuted in 1949 and is named for the number of revolutions per minute it takes to play the content on each of its sides.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Three of those 35 digital singles are the above Bowie 45s which you can purchase via the links below. A word of warning though, (hinted at in today's lyric quotation) the Blue Jean file is defective and it skips at around 2:50 in to the track. We'll let you know when the file has been replaced with a good one.

Vh1 Storytellers Cd/dvd Winners

Well, I guess we must be looking for a different kind...

We set this competition for five copies of EMI's VH1 Storytellers CD/DVD package last week. (07.06.2009 NEWS: VH1 STORYTELLERS CD/DVD OUT NOW - FIVE TO BE WON)

It was a simple spot-the-difference contest in which you had to identify five changes in a screen grab from DB's Storytellers performance. The easiest way to highlight those changes is via the animation below.

I suppose you could argue that there were actually six changes, though I did count the head-swapping of the two chaps on the far right as one change.

However, many of you didn't notice that Bowie's top was changing in length and you counted the head-swap as two separate changes...Don't worry, you were also chucked in to the hat.

So, the five of you that fortune has smiled upon today are...

dukebox
fshion
okazaki
sashamoniker
scotty

Please note that we have European and North American pressings of the VH1 Sorytellers CD/DVD. There are no content differences...both DVDs are NTSC, 5.1 surround, region 0 and all that malarkey.

However, there are tiny differences in the packaging and the North American version has a green sticker on the front that claims "CD/DVD of original broadcast + 5 bonus tracks!" ...ooops. In actual fact there are only 4 bonus tracks.

When sending me your address, could you winners please state which pressing you would prefer.

Moon And Storytellers Reviews In The Word Mag

Whisper The Word...

I know a fair few BowieNetters attended the BFI preview of MOON and the Q&A following it on Wednesday and speaking to some of you afterwards, it seems the film is every bit as good as we had hoped.

The August issue of The Word is very much in agreement with this opinion, as evidenced by the following intro paragraph to their MOON spread and interview with Duncan Jones...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's be clear about one thing: this magazine has very little time for celebrity offspring, what with their perfume lines, their photography collections, their acting careers and their "modelling" that tests the limits of our credulity and resilience to human hideousness.

But here's a massive and incontrovertible exception. Duncan Jones, known in childhood as Zowie Bowie, son of Angie and The Dame himself, has directed his first movie - and it's really good. Really, really good.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MOON gets a similar thumbs up in the review section as does Storytellers via a review by Jim Irvin...from which, this edited excerpt...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bowie dusts off this old flop [Can't Help Thinking About Me] and it sounds fantastic, a highlight of the curious, too-brief set featured on the show. He's rather disparaging about part of the lyric, calling it the worst two lines of his career.

Granted, it's clumsy to sing, but it's the seed of a brilliant anything-goes lyricist, who's fully flowered on Drive-In Saturday.

This edition could easily have been a couple of hours longer.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking of Storytellers, stay tuned for the results of our contest and details of another Storytellers contest we'll be running directly afterwards.

Heroes By The Helensburgh Heroes Due August 1st

Just for one day...

You may have noticed the press release for "Heroes" by the Scottish Helensburgh Heroes Experience in the PR section of BowieNet above.

The Helensburgh community is set to release a version of the classic David Bowie track on August 1st 2009. "Heroes" is the end product of six months hard work by over 100 local singers and musicians.

In an attempt to raise awareness of both the talented and inspirational people that have hailed from the area, and the desperate need for a permanent arts and leisure centre, a group of local people hit upon the idea of creating a ?Live Aid? style community recording of the song.

Well now Executive Producer of the project, Phil Worms, has been in touch with an exclusive first look at the CD artwork, above.

The artwork was created by three Helensburgh primary school pupils who won a local competition to design a cover for the project which attracted over 200 entries.

Phil also gave us the following quotation as to why "Heroes" was the song chosen for the campaign...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"We chose the song for two main reasons. Firstly the natural link between Helensburgh's Heroes, the achievements of the many local men and women that have given us so much and whose achievements we wanted to celebrate, and the song title. We have always felt that our Heroes connect individuals to the area as a whole through their physical, cultural, emotional, intellectual and spiritual aspects. Their stories, events and aspirations give meaning to our past, present and future.

And secondly, and more importantly, we wanted everyone who took part in the recording, whatever age and background, to feel like a Hero, to feel inspired, to feel that they were all equally contributing to the project... even if it was only for the one day. The song is so iconic, and its lyrics resonate with people for so many different reasons, that it was frankly a privilege to have been able record it."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go here for details of the launch event on August 1st and for more information regarding the project generally.

A sample of the single and accompanying video can be found on the Helensburgh Heroes YouTube channel.
