Hmv Campaign - Syd Is Db's Inspiration

'cause I know what you are...

The HMV 'Be Inspired' campaign continues in the UK with the 'My Inspiration' press campaign featuring iconic/contemporary artists, who have selected a lyric from a song that has most inspired them as artists, or which continues to influence them today.

The first of the new adverts, exclusively unveiled here, is the above Frank Ockenfels shot of David Bowie from 1999 with the lyric DB has selected from Syd Barrett's Gigolo Aunt. Here's the excerpt he chose:

HEADING ON DOWN WITH THE LIGHT,
THE DUST IN YOUR WAY, SHE WAS ANGRIER THERE,
THAN HER WATERSHELL MALE,
LIFE TO THIS LOVE TO ME

The campaign comes two months after Syd's sad passing, which we reported at the time with a touching tribute from David. (07.11.06 NEWS: TRIBUTE TO SYD BARRETT FROM DB)

Click on the above image to read a press release regarding the HMV 'Be Inspired' campaign that we told you about after it's launch earlier in the week. (09.06.2006 NEWS: ALADDIN SANE INSPIRES HMV CAMPAIGN)

The campaign will run in-store, online via hmv.co.uk and hmvdigital.com and extensively across UK media.

If you've not already seen them, look out for giant 60x40 inch Aladdin Sane posters in in-store windows and on public transport, and other displays & merchandising across 230 HMV high street stores.

Hopefully, we'll get our hands on a few of the posters for a contest on these very pages.

Bnet Give-away - August Winners - September Is Go

BowieNetter Zig proudly (if somewhat rudely) displays some of his BowieNet give-away
booty. Is it my imagination, or is Zig a giant? That Reality canvas is fourteen inches
square and the Sound + Vision print is thirty inches long...they look tiny compared to ZIg!

Hang him on my wall...

If you're not familiar with the monthly BowieNet give-away take a look at the first days of previous months in the news for an explanation...and yes, for those that are still asking, it is as simple as sending me an e-mail each month in the hope that The Random Selector ® will single you out for an allotment of points to spend in the vaults at your leisure...or simply save until you have enough to claim an even bigger prize.

Here are the winners for August:

1st prize = 500 points to brotherziggy
2nd prize = 400 points to nomadsoul55
3rd prize = 300 points to ledge
4th prize = 200 points to Lilith
5th prize = 100 points to crashingoutwithsylvian

NB: Please note that incomplete claims may not be despatched until a full claim has been made, as we don't want to be posting several different packages to the same person, and we don't want to make you feel bad about your carbon footprint. However, don't fret, as soon as you stake a claim on a certain prize, that will be put aside for you until your claim is complete.

In the meantime, all you have to do to be in with a chance of winning some points in the September draw is send us an e-mail here.

Usual rules apply: Only one entry per BowieNet account, and please remember you must enter using your BowieNet e-mail or at least supply your BowieNet user name. (Believe it or not, some entrants still don't bother with either.)

There will be a fresh chance each month to send in your name, and don't wait for us to tell you so, you can just start sending in on the first day of each new month...as indeed, you seem to be doing anyway.

Each contest will close at midnight UK time on the last day of each month, with winners being announced a day or two later...or up to almost a week later in the holiday season! ;-)

So, next month we will announce the winners for September and so on every month until you empty the vaults...if that ever happens!

As ever, we'll be posting details of the new items as we get them, so you don't have to worry about choosing anything just yet. Good luck kidz!

Aladdin Sane Inspires Hmv Campaign

All my friends can see is just the pinkness of his skin...

David Bowie's iconic 1973 Aladdin Sane album cover is the face of the latest HMV BE INSPIRED campaign in the UK.

As you can see from the advert for classic CDs above, Mr Sane's lightening bolt make-up has been changed from the familiar red and blue to HMV's corporate magenta...or pink if you prefer.

Marilyn Monroe has received similar treatment for the classic DVDs advert with the addition of a pink earring to the equally iconic The Seven Year Itch billowing dress shot.

Currently, there seem to be three DB titles for just a fiver each: Aladdin Sane, Low and "Heroes", with great reductions on much of the Bowie back catalogue and gazillions of other artists too.

Click on either of the above Bowie faces to get to the hmv.co.uk site.

Db On Cover Of Ltd Edition Radio Times

The Radio Times they are a-telling...

After a large teaser picture in last week's Radio Times in the UK, this week's edition (9-15 September) sees David Bowie gracing the front of one of six different "collectable covers".

Each edition features one of the stars of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's forthcoming second series of EXTRAS, the set of which we exclusively reported from back in June. (06.07.2006 NEWS: BOWIE PART FILMED FOR EXTRAS & 06.09.2006 NEWS: NEW BOWIE PORTRAITS FROM EXTRAS SHOOT & 07.15.2006 SNIPPET: EXTRA EXTRAS...READ ALL ABOUT IT)

Inside the magazine there is a four-page feature on EXTRAS with another large photo of DB and the following quotation from Ricky Gervais...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I've been a huge fan of David Bowie for 25 years

(Blammo Note: I think you'll find that's 35 years actually Ricky!) and he is a true genius. As a failed pop star myself, I really believe he puts the "art" into music.

He's so original, yet when you meet him, he's so approachable and down to earth it's hard to believe it's the same man who was Starman. Writing a song with him was surreal; I was songwriting with Bowie. How amazing is that?"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The second series of EXTRAS starts on BBC2 in the UK at 9:00pm on Thursday, September 14th. The first show of the series features Orlando Bloom, but you can see the David Bowie episode the following week on the 21st.

Anthony Newley Four Parter On Radio 2

Anthony Newley mildly gurning for Gurney Slade somewhere in 1960.

Strange games they would play then...

We've not made mention of Anthony Newley on these pages for a few years now (04.01.2003 NEWS: BOWIE RECORDS TRIBUTE TO ANTHONY NEWLEY), but anybody who knows a bit of Bowie history will understand just how important the man was to the development of young Jones's imagination...particularly for his work in the 1960 ITV show The Strange World Of Gurney Slade.

As you've no doubt already noticed in the BowieNet calendar (thanx Spaceface) BBC Radio 2 commence a documentary, Stop The World: It's Anthony Newley, looking at the life and career of Anthony Newley at 19:00 this coming Friday September 8th. The documentary is in four half hour parts over four weeks and is presented by Newley fan Jonathan Ross.

David Bowie is listed among those taking part in the show, but when I asked him what he had actually contributed he told me that he certainly hadn't done anything new for it. I can only presume that the show uses past interviews with DB, if anything at all, but it's no doubt still worth checking out anyway.

Don't forget you can always listen again to BBC radio shows up to the next week's broadcast, and documentaries are usually made available for longer.

The High Line in New York yesterday. Don't worry kidz, DB won't be playing on this bit.

Stay tuned for confirmation of artists booked to appear and ticket details in aforementioned Highline Festival section when it launches in the not too distant future.

The Devil And Daniel Johnston Dvd Out Now

In the Devil-may-be-here...

David Bowie has long been a fan of the work of Daniel Johnston and I'm sure you all remember the inspired double bill at Bowie's 2002 Meltdown Festival when Daniel was paired with The Legendary Stardust Cowboy.

Released this week (August 21) on region 2 DVD (region 1 September 19) is The Devil and Daniel Johnston for which the following quotation from DB is being used in press ads like the one above: "Daniel Johnston reminds me of aspects that made me love art in the first place."

If you're not already a fan you should check out the DVD anyway as it's an incredibly moving documentary that manages to capture key moments throughout Daniel's life on film, and his continued battle with a bi-polar disorder. It's also a great introduction to his music.

Click on the image above for an excellent The Devil and Daniel Johnston mini-site, and visit Daniel's official site, Hi, How Are You? for much more about the man himself.

It seems the first of the subscription DVDs of Burt Sugarman's The Midnight Special that we told you about back in April have begun to surface. (04.29.2006 NEWS: 1980 FLOOR SHOW TO GET OFFICIAL DVD RELEASE?)

Here's the tracklisting for the Million Sellers DVD which includes David Bowie's wonderful rendition of Space Oddity from the 1980 Floor Show recorded at The Marquee in London in 1973 especially for The Midnight Special.

Roy Orbison - Oh, Pretty Woman
Fleetwood Mac - Rhiannon
Peter Frampton - Baby I Love Your Way
John Denver & Cass Elliot - Leaving On A Jet Plane
The Bee Gees - Jive Talkin'
Linda Ronstadt - You're No Good
The Guess Who - American Woman
Al Green - Let's Stay Together
Aretha Franklin - Respect
David Bowie - Space Oddity
Blondie - Heart Of Glass
Labelle - Lady Marmalade
The Steve Miller Band - The Joker
Billy Joel - Travelin' Prayer
Donna Summer - Last Dance

As we told you back in April, you can't buy these DVDs in the shops, though they are selling on eBay for inflated prices that will no doubt start to fall once the market becomes saturated.

I still have no idea if there are plans to release the full Bowie show or not, but we'll let you know either way as soon as we find out.

C.r.a.z.y. Out Now On Region 2 Dvd

I know that people think, That I'm a little C.R.A.Z.Y...

Jean-Marc Vallée's C.R.A.Z.Y. finally gets a region 2 DVD release this week (August 21st). You may remember a piece on these pages about the success of the film and the region 1 DVD from last year, which I'm afraid I can't find right now.

At the time, I made mention of actor Michel Cote's memorable Space Oddity sequence as Zachary Beaulieu for which he is seen sporting the Aladdin Sane flash, as on the Region 1 DVD cover above.

If you remember nothing about the film, click on Zachary's David Bowie badge above to get to the official C.R.A.Z.Y. site, where you can view the synopsis, details of the soundtrack, (which includes Space Oddity) and indeed a trailer which has a snatch of aforementioned Space Oddity sequence.

Rock Star Supernova Goes Bowie Bonkers!

I was born blue and weathered but I burst just like a Rock Star Supernova...

Apart from the regular updates on the MBs, hit US TV show Rock Star - Supernova is a phenomenon that has so far eluded the Europeans among us.

But it seems it's worth a mention here if not only for the appreciation of David Bowie's music on the show. Knowing nothing about the programme, I decided to hand over to US BowieNetter juliedawn who has followed the progress of the show thus far.

Over to you Julie...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm starting to wonder if" Rock Star -- Supernova" should've been called "Rock Star -- Bowie". The American television reality series, designed to find a lead singer for the new rock band "Supernova" (comprised of Gilby Clarke, Tommy Lee and Jason Newsted), has turned into a veritable David Bowie love-fest over the past month. Weekly the contestants fight over, then perform songs selected for them by the band - and each of the past four weeks has resulted in the rendition of a classic Bowie track. No other artist has been so prominently represented.

First up was Magni, with a rather well done performance of Heroes. Storm followed the next week with a decent enough version of Changes.

However, last weeks offering of All The Young Dudes by resident eccentric Zayra was quite possibly the most horrifying cover of a Bowie song ever conceived. Dressed in a gold lame catsuit, black top hat and Frankenstein-esque black platforms, she somehow managed to create an entirely new melody for the song - and then sang that off-key. During the chorus, she couldn't seem to decide if she was doing the Bowie or Mott The Hoople version. A line would be half-sung, then suddenly interjected with a squeaky "Hey Dude, where are you? I want to hear you! I want to feel you! Stand up!"

Unfortunately this combined with the 'new' melody had the effect of rendering a classic song almost unrecognisable, which was possibly for the best. Mind-boggling doesn't come close to describing this performance.

Luckily this week we were saved by Magni with his second Bowie effort, this time a very nice rendition of Starman. Okay, he did mess up the lyrics at one point, but we can forgive him for that!

Magni and Storm are still going strong in the competition, but Zayra -- who surprisingly managed to stay around after the Dudes debacle -- was finally voted off this week.

Most of this 'Bowie-ness' seems to be the influence of Gilby Clarke, who is known to be a big DB fan. (Apparently he covered Diamond Dogs on one of his solo albums -- wonder if we'll be getting that song in the coming weeks?)

(Blammo note: Gilby covered Diamond Dogs on his album Swag. He also did a version of Hang On To Yourself on The Hangover.) He's often been shown on camera singing along, and when the band recently took the contestants to Las Vegas Gilby made a point of excitedly announcing as they stood on the stage at The Joint "All the big stars have played here. Bowie played here. I saw Bowie here!".

But it appears Gilby's not the only one. This week (after being seen singing along to the Starman performance) Tommy Lee -- Mr. Heavy Metal himself - proclaimed "I love David Bowie!" I guess it just goes to show you never can tell...and proves once again just how influential -- and revered - David's music continues to be.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanx a lot Julie...look forward to your review of tonight's episode.

You can view all of the aforementioned performances online at the official Rock Star - Supernova site, where you can purchase them too if that's your thing.

Kristeen Young Single Launch In London On Monday

Stabbed the backs of fathers...

As many of you know, Kristeen Young has enjoyed regular exposure on these pages over recent years, not least of all because of her wonderful duet with David Bowie on the song Saviour from her album Breasticles.

Well now it seems more people are finally falling for her charms as she releases her debut single, Kill The Father, in the UK through Morrissey's Attack label tomorrow.

The single will be issued as a CD and numbered 7" 45 which will be limited to 1,000 copies, and will be backed with the song Life's Not Short, It's Sooooo Long.

Both tracks are from the forthcoming Tony Visconti produced album The Orphans.

Time Out magazine in the UK described the record as "fantastic" and went on thus: She wails operatically, like Kate Bush fronting Metallica, thumping seven shades of shit from her piano as thunderous drums pound away in the background. Think 'This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us' crossbred with 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', as rendered by Tori Amos, but, you know, good.

To celebrate the release, KY will be playing at the Metro Club in London's Oxford Street on Monday evening. She's scheduled to be onstage at 8:45pm, but, if you intend to catch her set I would turn up earlier in case there's some rescheduling.

Here's the details for those wishing to attend...

Monday, August 21 at 8:45pm
Metro Club
19-23 Oxford Street
London W1D 2DN
Tel: 020 7437 0964

Also playing are: Costar @ 8pm, Royal Gun @ 9:30 and Headway @10:15.Check out www.KristeenYoung.com and www.myspace.com for news of any upcoming activities.

Db Talks About Gnarls Barkley At Summerstage

DB backstage at the GB show in NYC on Thursday night.

From Central Park to Shanty Town, He always heard that Crazy sound...

David Bowie checked out Gnarls Barkley at the Central Park SummerStage in New York on Thursday evening.

The band have had great success in the UK, and you may remember they borrowed a bit of Bowie for their latest video, Smiley Faces. (07.21.2006 NEWS: GNARLS BARKLEY REWRITES MUSICAL HISTORY)

I asked David what he made of the performance, and here's what he had to say exclusively for BowieNet...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Gnarls Barkley put on a good show. Crowd going barmy, of course, for 'Crazy' which closed their set. Vocalist Cee-Lo (above) has one of the great voices. He really nails that Motown thing, talks well with the audience and positively pulses good vibes.

Whole crew dressed as school kids, short pants, caps etc. You might like to know that Holly (below right) is singing backup with them, very fetching in her tartan skirt and white blouse. db"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For those of you with poor recall, Holly is obviously the one and only Holly Palmer who you should remember for the various talents she displayed along with Emm Gryner on the 'hours...' Promotional Tour and at Glastonbury among other things.

Db To Guest At Kca Event In Nyc In November

We want to live...

David Bowie has confirmed he will guest "with a couple of songs" for Keep A Child Alive's (KCA) Annual Black Ball On November 9th, 2006, at NYC's Hammerstein Ball Room.

Keep A Child Alive is a project close to David's heart, and one he obviously felt strong enough about to lend his support to, as evidenced by the stunning image above from the forthcoming poster campaign.

BowieNet members can view a larger version of the poster by clicking on it, but for those that can't make out the wording in the above version, it reads thus:

I AM AFRICAN

HELP US TO STOP THE DYING. PAY FOR LIFESAVING AIDS DRUGS THAT CAN KEEP A CHILD, A MOTHER, A FATHER, A FAMILY ALIVE. VISIT KEEPACHILDALIVE.ORG TO HELP

A clear message that outlines the aims of www.keepachildalive.org pretty neatly.

A pair of VIP tickets for the event on November 9th are being auctioned off over at www.charityfolks.com with the promise: "Meet Alicia Keys, David Bowie And Others With Two VIP Tickets To KCA's Annual Black Ball".

But with the bidding already at $5,000.00, I think these VIP tickets may be beyond the financial reach of most reading this.

However, it's probably worth bearing in mind that events like this are primarily organised to raise funds for important charities like KCA, and aren't designed to particularly satisfy the wishes of the fans of each performer on the night.

I'm not sure at the moment if and when any tickets for the event might go on general sale. They did last year, so we're hopeful. But, either way, as soon as we have the official line on that we'll let you know.

Iman will be co-hosting the evening with Alicia Keys.

There are currently no plans for any other live performances by David Bowie before next May's Highline festival. Yes, that line may sound familiar, but there are honestly no plans.

Sequinned Suits & Platform Boots

Blockbuster Productions & OYT Present

SEQUINNED SUITS & PLATFORM BOOTS

Edinburgh Festival Fringe August 2006

Mark Wheeller?s glam rock tribute play Sequinned Suits and Platform Boots affectionately recalls the glittering 70?s and one teenage boy?s ambition to be Starman. The music of David Bowie, T-Rex, Suzi Quatro, Roxy Music, Slade, Mott the Hoople, The Sweet, Alice Cooper and Mud provides the upbeat nostalgic soundtrack. Already featured on David Bowie?s own website news page, SEQUINED SUITS AND PLATFORM BOOTS is will be embraced by All the Young Dudes!

The fun, flamboyant music and fashion of the 70s are the pulse of SEQUINNED SUITS AND PLATFORM BOOTS. Based on Wheeller?s own youthful admiration of glam groups in British and American musical culture, this is a tale of a young boy?s simultaneous efforts to be a rock star and to woo local girl Lorraine Izoff. The boy, named Shakey Threwer, is guided by a mystical superhero character called The Blockbuster.

?Quirkily, original, funky and funny? looking at teenage dreams with an excellent portrayal of the animated characters. Set to a soundtrack from the glam rock era, the show is interesting for any music fan, glam rock or not?

Southampton Institute Newspaper

Playwright Mark Wheeller has six plays touring throughout UK schools. Too Much Punch For Judy has been performed 4755 times... quite a record for a contemporary play! Graham ? World?s Fastest Blindman was ?Pick of the Fringe? under the title Race To Be Seen. Kill Jill was commissioned by and premiered at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 2005.

SEQUINNED SUITS AND PLATFORM BOOTS is a collaboration between Oaklands Youth Theatre and Blockbuster Productions. Oaklands Youth Theatre have performed at both the National Student Drama Festival in Scarborough, and Lloyd?s Bank Theatre Challenge at the Royal National Theatre. The group has toured in the USA (Texas), have performed in France, and have performed twice previously at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. SEQUINNED SUITS AND PLATFORM BOOTS will especially appeal to Young Americans and Children of the Revolution!  Bang a gong, Get it On and get a ticket!

Mark Wheeler Play At Edinburgh Fringe

The past it almost shimmers now...

I'm sure you all remember Mark Wheeler's (BowieNetter eedsud) play, Ziggy's Band, which we told you about on these pages last year. (01.29.2005 NEWS: ZIGGY'S BAND TAKES TO THE STAGE NEXT WEEK & 02.03.2005 REMINDER: SEE ZIGGY'S BAND LIVE IN THE UK TONIGHT & 12.14.05 NEWS: ZIGGY'S BAND NOMINATED FOR CURTAIN CALL AWARDS)

We also made mention at the time of that last posting of the equally popular follow-up, Sequinned Suits and Platform Boots.

Well if you're intending to visit the Edinburgh Festival Fringe next week you really should pop along and give Mark a bit of support, as Sequinned Suits and Platform Boots. will be playing throughout the week from Monday to Saturday.

Though he may not be a household name among adults in the UK, it seems Mark's plays are well known among schoolchildren of a certain age. Here's a bit from the press release about Mark's plays which appeared in last week's Times Educational Supplement in the UK...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this weeks TES (Times Educational Supplement) there is an article saying that unknown (to the general public) author Mark Wheeller's plays are as popular in school GCSE exams as those written by Sir Alan Ayckbourn, John Godber and David Campton.

Two of Mark's plays have been received over 4000 professional performances! As these are outside the West End I'll wager you haven't heard of them!

Mark's latest play is coming to Edinburgh, again premiered by a non professional group, but will it like seven of his other plays go on to be presented by professional actors in substantial tours?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here follows the listings information:

Venue: C, venue 34, Edinburgh Festival Fringe
Dates: Monday 14 to Saturday 19 August 2006
