Db On Biography Channel In Uk - Win Dvd

"Ziggy Stardust, The Thin White Duke, glam rock to blue-eyed soul. They don't come any
more challenging or talented than David Bowie.", it says here. And who can argue with that!?

My life's amazing..

Those of you who keep an eye on the BowieNet calendar (diligently updated by Spaceface on a regular basis) may have watched the repeat showing of the quite brilliant Biography Channel Bowie presentation this evening.

If you didn't, and you have never seen it, don't panic as it's being shown two more times on Thursday, at 11:00 and 14:00 UK time.

Here's a brief synopsis of the documentary, which first aired on US TV back in October 2002.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He rocketed to fame in 1969 with the release of "Space Oddity." It marked the beginning of a genre-defying career that is still going strong.

David Bowie has released scores of chart-topping hits, starred in films and on Broadway, pioneered new ways of doing business as a performing artist, and gleefully defied conventions and provoked outrage with carefully-constructed personal re-inventions.

From his childhood in London to his extensive philanthropic efforts and place on the board of a fine arts magazine, BIOGRAPHY® peels back layers of incarnations, going beyond the Thin White Duke and Ziggy Stardust for an intimate portrait of the man himself.

Rare footage from the BBC archives shows the future superstar performing at the age of 17, while musicians like Moby and Trent Reznor reflect on his towering legacy. And a more intimate view is provided by his wife of ten years, Iman.

Here is the complete story of a rock and roll pioneer whose accomplishments go far beyond music.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The biography was extra special in that it was made with David's co-operation and included many previously unseen photographs and interviews with his oldest friends such as George Underwood, Geoff McCormack, Tony Visconti and Mick Rock.

The 100 minute film was made available commercially in the US on DVD and VHS. In the UK it was edited to 90 minutes and released as the above Sound & Vision DVD.

Well, just in case you won't get to see Thursday's airings either, we have copies of the UK version (Region 2 PAL) to give to ten lucky BowieNetters.

One simple question for this. According to the documentary, what was the first name of the girl that earned David a jolly good thump in the eye from his pal George Underwood?

The important point here is that I'm asking what her name was according to the documentary, not what you think you may know to be the truth.

You may be thinking: "If I haven't seen the bloody thing and I'm trying to win a copy, how the hell am I supposed to know the answer to that?!" Well, there's a clue in the image at the top of this news piece...and her name wasn't Chanel!

When you think you've figured it out, send your answer to me here.

Usual rules apply: (Sorry, I have to mention this old flannel every time I run a contest.) Only one entry per BowieNet account, and please remember you must enter using your BowieNet e-mail or at least supply your BowieNet user name...it also speeds things up if you include your address in the event you end up an eventual winner.

The contest ends two weeks from now at midnight UK time on Sunday April 23rd, and we'll announce the winners shortly thereafter...along with the name of that playground femme fatal, of course!

If this is the first time you have e-mailed me, you may get a message to verify your e-mail as I have utilised the BowieNet anti-spam filter, which is well worth utilising...and I know how you all like a good old utilise.

Jake Arnott Talks Bowie On Bbc 6 Music

Johnny looks up at the stars...

Author Jake Arnott is currently working the publicity treadmill to plug his latest offering, Johnny Come Home, out now through Hodder & Stoughton Ltd (ISBN: 0340840358).

David Bowie has made no secret of his love for Jake's writing and regular visitors to these pages may remember a quotation from DB that graced the cover of an earlier novel of Jake's, truecrime, that we told you about back in June 2003. (06.09.2003 NEWS: DB CONTRIBUTES QUOTE FOR NEW ARNOTT BOOK)

As we mentioned back in that original news piece, the quotation from DB back then was: 'Funny, fast, witty and brutal.', and he also went on to say of Jake's work: "Whenever he's got a new book out I drop everything, knowing that the next couple of hours are going to be pure gangland bliss. Gawd bless 'im."

Johnny Come Home, lifts yet more from the latter quotation, and apart from that Bowie reference, one of the printings of The Long Firm has a jacket rather evocative of one of the more famous Bowie album sleeves of the seventies. (See below)

A closer inspection of Johnny Come Home's cover reveals an Aladdin Sane type flash tattoo and the nods to Bowie continue inside. Here's the synopsis:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a gripping tale of emotional and political ferment in 70s London from the author of the bestselling 'Long Firm' trilogy. London, 1972, and a charismatic anarchist called O'Connell dies of an overdose, leaving his artist boyfriend, Pearson, and fellow activist Nina in shock.

It also leaves a spare room in their squat, so Pearson moves in Sweet Thing, a streetwise yet vulnerable young rent boy he initially picks up but then tries to help. Pearson isn't the only one who's interested though - glam rock star Johnny Chrome is on the brink of a breakdown and is convinced that Sweet Thing is the only one who can bring him back.

As Sweet Thing gets drawn further into Johnny Chrome's dangerous orbit, Pearson and Nina discover that O'Connell was not all he seemed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile, Jake has mentioned Bowie in a few recent interviews, including The Observer, Scotland on Sunday and an interview on the BBC's 6 Music on Monday morning.

The author also chose to play All The Young Dudes and Lady Stardust during the 6 Music interview with Pete Mitchell (standing in for Phill Jupitus) which you can still listen to online via the 6 Music player. Click on Monday (right hand side of the page) and fast forward about two hours and thirty four minutes in. Jake is on after T Rex's Children Of The Revolution.

Jake doesn't know if DB has read Johnny Come Home or not, and he is such a big Bowie fan that he has admitted to being quite nervous about what David will make of his latest effort. I'm sure he'll let you know, Jake.

Familiar(ish) Face In New Rhcp Video

They don't look much (oh), They sure Chili Chili (oh)...

Judging by the e-mails I've received, a fair few of you have already seen the latest video from those crazy Californian kidz, the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

For those of you that haven't, it's been made to promote their latest single release, Dani California, and in it, the band dress as a bunch of their favourite icons from the world of rock.

The band's bassist, Michael Balzary, (who apparently goes by the name of Flea, on account of being able to actually jump twenty times his own height!) is pictured above. Bet you can't guess who he's meant to be? No, it's not Daniel Ash!

Anyway, you can view the whole film by clicking on the image above and have a titter at the crazy antics of the Red Hot Chili Peppers right now.

Ziggy And Halloween Jack On Bbc4 Tonight

All you've got to do is win...

As mentioned by Spaceface in the BowieNet calendar yonks ago, BBC4 is showing DA Pennebaker's Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (21:00) and Alan Yentob's Cracked Actor documentary (22:30) as part of their 1973 week.

I'm sure the sharpest among you have already spotted that Pennebaker's famous film was indeed made in 1973 (July 3rd) but Cracked Actor wasn't made until the following year, and in fact wasn't broadcast until January 1975. (See original press advert above)

In what seems a feeble attempt to make Cracked Actor seem more 1973, the BBC4 home page has used the live shot below from the Cracked Actor documentary illustrating Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars!

Anyway, who cares. Most everybody has the excellent Ziggy Motion Picture DVD anyway, and this is a chance to get a digital copy of the Cracked Actor documentary on disc if you don't already have it. Remember, UK copyright law supposedly states that you must erase any TV recording after viewing, or after about two weeks. Yeah, of course, we all know that, and I'm sure you all do it anyway.

For those that Yentob's film has so far evaded, you can get a taste of the programme by taking a look at our 30th anniversary news piece from last year (01.26.2005 SNIPPET: BBC's CRACKED ACTOR IS THIRTY TODAY) and by looking at a couple of pages of screen grabs on the excellent BOWIEGOLDENYEARS and The Young American websites.

Tissues for my eyes!

Party Reminder Plus April Issue Of The Voyeur Out Now

All you've got to do is win...

We first mentioned news of the annual Voyeur fan meeting back in February. (02.04.2006 NEWS: HEADS UP FOR VOYEUR'S APRIL FAN MEETING)

Here's the updated info in case you missed it:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The meeting will be held in the The Amsterdam Akhnaton Club.

The Akhnaton Club can be found at the Nieuwezijds Kolk 25, only a 5 minutes walk from the Amsterdam Central train station.

Next to EchoBowie (the best Bowiecoverband in the world) BowieNet?s own TVQueenBitch and TonyDay will fly in to be the day's DJs. It goes without saying TVQueenBitch will be fully dressed up for the occasion. (Blam note: I wouldn't mind betting Tony Day won't look ordinary either!)

There will also be an exclusive Reality photo-exhibition with photographs made by Antoine Loogman and of course there will be lots of national and international merchants.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You may have noticed the exciting addition of Tony Day to the DJ roster...I'm sure his and TVQueenBitch's sets will be worth the trip alone.

Something those peoploids at The Voyeur didn't mention in the blurb they sent, was the raffle type thing they have on the day.

Well, I'm sure they won't forget to mention it from now on as David Bowie has very kindly contributed one of the Serious Moonlight DVD promotional prints we've been giving away here on BowieNet. For those of you that can't make it out in the scan above it reads: "For a winner!! Bo 2006". What a nice bloke he is.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Those of you that subscribe to The Voyeur fan magazine can expect the April issue through your letterbox any moment now. Those of you that don't may want to check out exactly what your missing, below...

No April Fool Joke...great Contest Instead Shock

I Pity The Fool...

Considering today's date, I suppose you're all expecting some far-fetched story or other...I'm still getting enquiries for Mesmer! But no, not today.

Is there anybody reading these pages not expecting an April Fools' Day joke? Well if there is, then I'm afraid they're too easy a target and that's not sporting.

However, you're not getting off that lightly. In the spirit of April 1st at least, I put my thinking cap on and considered how I could still get you to question the validity of something I present as fact.

Well, the image above has obviously already told you just what I thought of. I'm sure you're all familiar with the popular TV show which I believe has been shown in various formats around the world.

For those not familiar, the premise is simple. Three obscure words are presented with their meanings and a panel has to decide which of the definitions of the three words has the one true meaning, the other two being bluffs. Except I'm doing it with contests not words.

Below I've described the prizes for three seperate contests, you don't have to do anything apart from work out which you think is for real and which are bluffs. The twist being you're only allowed to enter the ONE contest you think is for real. Good luck!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remember the above tour poster, which I think first came to light during the UK leg of the Reality Tour in autumn 2003? A striking image (even if I do say so myself) which found its way onto different bits of merchandise and was used for tour passes, etc.

Well, one of the things that was produced as a cute little gift to the promoters in different territories was a promotional jigsaw puzzle! These 39cm x 28cm 130-piece jigsaws came in a numbered picture box.

There were only ten of these beauties made, and apparently only five were actually sent out. You've guessed who has the other five. It's likely that you've never even heard about this item. I've never seen it on eBay, but would you sell it if you had one? I think not.

We have numbers 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 and if you think this isn't a bluff, then enter this contest here.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you thought the jigsaw above was a true collectable, seasoned Ziggy collectors will know just how rare the above sheet of George Underwood Ziggy character stickers is. Not to be confused with the Ziggy transfers from the same time, this set actually included three more characters.

Clockwise from top left, the stickers were: Gilly, Starman, Aligator, Weird, Newsman, Lectric Eye, Lady Stardust and, of course, Ziggy himself right there in the centre.

George has very generously given us five sheets to give away, which means we now have more than him...but not for long. Obviously the sheets we have don't have the George Underwood watermark across them, as above, but I have to make it clear that to enter this particular contest, you must promise not to reproduce the stickers in any way...that includes scanning them in and posting them online. We don't want some unscrupulous bootlegger making inferior copies and flogging them on eBay.

Was that convincing enough to make you believe this is the one true contest? If so, please enter here.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can you believe it? We have yet another five signed-by-David Bowie highly collectable 2006 Serious Moonlight DVD promotional prints of which we've already given twenty away of. (03.13.2006 NEWS: SM DVD OUT NOW...POSTER WINNERS AND DVD COMP & 03.15.2006 NEWS: FIVE MORE SIGNED SM POSTER WINNERS! & 03.19.06 NEWS: YET ANOTHER FIVE SIGNED SM POSTER WINNERS!!!)

But, can it be true? You know they definitely exist, but would we hang onto yet another five? Whatever, if you think this is the most likely to be true, then try your luck here.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Usual rules apply: Only one entry per BowieNet account, and you may only enter one of the above three contests. Please don't bother contacting me for extra clues, as you won't get them.

Also, please remember you must enter using your BowieNet e-mail or at least supply your BowieNet user name...it also speeds things up if you include your address in the event you end up an eventual winner.

The contest ends two weeks from now at midnight UK time on Saturday April 15th to give you a little time to ponder the above options. We'll announce the five winners the following weekend, along with the truth of course!

If this is the first time you have e-mailed me, you may get a message to verify your e-mail as I have utilised the BowieNet anti-spam filter, which works a treat.

Bbc's Marc Riley Nominated For Sony Award

Two sides of Marc Riley, ultra-cool and fake-tanned DJ at Glastonbury with Rufus Wainwright, and
the nerdy but well-respected plane spotter once questioned by authorities for being a military spy!

I am a DJ, I am what I play...

Our warmest and heartfelt congratulations from everyone here at DavidBowie.com to BBC DJ Marc Riley who has been nominated for a prestigious Sony Radio Academy Award. The awards are generally considered to be the broadcasting equivalent of The Oscars.

Marc has been nominated in the category of Music Radio Personality Of The Year. Here's the full list of nominees for the category:

Music radio personality of the year
Chris Evans - BBC Radio 2
Jamie Theakston - London's Heart 106.2
Lauren Laverne - Xfm
Marc Riley - BBC 6 Music
Tim Lovejoy - Virgin Radio

Regular visitors to these pages will be very familiar with just how Bowie-friendly Marc's various radio shows have been, not least of all Rocket Science and Mint which he currently hosts on the BBC's 6 Music.

I'm lucky enough to count Marc as a true friend, so I knew exactly where he'd be when I asked him about the nomination over a crackly connection from an undisclosed air-field where he was adding to his already impressive collection of various flying machines.

Marc was typically self-effacing: "When I heard I had been nominated I was more surprised than anybody. Obviously I don't expect to win, but even fifth of five will do me. It's just great to have made the list of nominees." Well, we won't jinx him with any predictions, but he certainly deserves to win.

Of course Marc is no stranger to Sony awards. As half of Radio 1's Mark and Lard team he won Sony Gold for Daytime Award - Music in 1998, in 1999 Sony Gold for Daytime Music and in 2001 Sony Gold for Music Programming - Daily Sequence, though this is the first time that either of the DJs have been nominated for a Sony since they went their separate ways.

Don't forget you can tune in twice a week to find out for yourself just why Marc Riley is so deserving of this award, or you can hear him online whenever you want by using the listen again feature. Click on aforementioned links to tune in.

Whatever the eventual outcome of the award, good luck to you Marc and thanx for your ceaseless quest to keep the Bowie flag flying on the BBC.

Ltd Edition 1972 Ziggy Live Album Artwork Print Available

So I turned myself to face me...

Photographer Jill Furmanovsky's rockarchive.com has today announced details of a limited edition print (above) of George Underwood's artwork for the unreleased live album of David Bowie?s 1972 Ziggy Stardust American Tour. Here's the official blurb:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RARE BOWIE ALBUM ARTWORK BY GEORGE UNDERWOOD ? EXCLUSIVELY THROUGH ROCK ARCHIVE

Rockarchive is proud to have the exclusive right to produce a limited edition of George Underwood?s previously unseen artwork for David Bowie?s 1972 Ziggy Stardust American Tour.

George Underwood?s Main Artery company was responsible for Bowie?s Hunky Dory and The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars covers in the early Seventies. George also did the painting on the back cover of the original 1969 David Bowie album (later reissued as Space Oddity) as well as covers for T Rex and Marc Bolan, Gentle Giant, Procol Harum and The Fixx.

A school-friend of Bowie?s, George was commissioned to design a cover for a live album while travelling with Bowie on his ?Ziggy Stardust? American tour in the autumn of 1972. He worked on the design in Los Angeles but unfortunately, plans for a live album from the tour were shelved and the artwork ended up on the wall at Bowie?s management, Mainman.

There it remained until recently. When George was reunited with his album artwork the only "damage" was that some of the Indian ink used in the design had faded due to exposure to the light. Thanks to the wonders of digital technology the original colour has been restored.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's good to see the artwork back in George's possession, particularly as it was put up for auction by Mainman a few years back. Above is a one-off proof sleeve made at the time, which has remained in the vaults of a private collector who wishes to stay anonymous, but kindly supplied the shot above.

As I'm sure you all know, George and his wife, Birgit, accompanied David on that American Ziggy tour, and some details about the album were included in a letter dated Wednesday November 15th, that was sent back home to George's parents. Here's a relevant excerpt:

"I've been working on an L.P. cover - it's nearly finished. I think it looks O.K. at least not bad considering it was done in a hotel room. The L.P. cover is for Dave's concerts recorded over here. It will probably be called David Bowie's First American Tour, or something. Released around Christmas or just after."

Though mentioned in press reports at the time, the album never materialised and the sleeve was forgotten about until recently. It's a beautiful Indian ink drawing, typical of George's work of the time, and it features David in two of the stage outfits that you're all familiar with.

Here's the technical stuff...The Ziggy Artwork is available in a limited Edition of 100. The size of the print is A1 (23.4" x 33.1") and it is a fine art archival digital print made from the original hand drawn artwork. The colour has been carefully restored with artist George Underwood's supervision to the vibrancy of the original.

Each print will be hand signed by George, embossed and numbered. It will also be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. With regard to price, the first five prints sold will be available at a special introductory price to BowieNet members. Thereafter, the price will increase incrementally as the edition sells out.

If interested you should ask for further information by e-mailing: info@rockarchive.com, or by calling rockarchive on +44 (0)20 7267 4716 and don't forget to tell them you're a BowieNetter for a very generous discount.

Meanwhile, auction house CooperOwen have another of George's beautiful designs going under the hammer in their MUSIC LEGENDS auction at Madame Tussauds in London on April 19th. Here's the lot info...

Sale Lot 1
David Bowie RCA promo tour poster, 1971
Vibrantly designed concert and promo poster, the blank space at the base left for individual venue details to be over printed.
Measures approx. 20 x 28 inch. (51 x 71 cm)
Estimate £200-250

Of course, the poster was actually produced in 1972, not 1971 as stated. The estimate is certainly reasonable enough though, considering the poster's rarity and how much I've seen the occasional copy of the poster go on eBay for in the last couple of years.

Stay tuned for a George Underwood collectors' special where we will be looking at the various Ziggy collectibles designed by Mr Underwood, and we'll hopefully be having a closer inspection of some of those letters he sent back home...it's all quite fascinating stuff.

Andy Serkis On The Prospect Of Working With Db

Andy Serkis, silver screen...

From Gollum via King Kong to David Bowie's assistant in The Prestige, there has to be some kind of link...and indeed there is. That link is actor Andy Serkis.

In a recent interview with Quint at Aint It Cool News, Andy talks about the prospect of working with DB as Nikola Tesla's assistant, Roger Alley, in the film we first told you about back in November of last year. (11.21.05 NEWS: DB CONFIRMS ROLE AS NIKOLA TESLA IN THE PRESTIGE & 02.21.2006 NEWS: THE PRESTIGE DUE FOR AUTUMN RELEASE)

Here's the relevant excerpt:

QUINT: I also wanted to touch on a project you're doing now, playing David Bowie's assistant in THE PRESTIGE.
ANDY SERKIS: Yeah!
QUINT: Sounds like it'd be so much fun. Have you done that already?
ANDY SERKIS: I haven't, I haven't. I've done some scenes. I've done my scenes with Hugh Jackman. I've got my scenes with David Bowie coming up next week, actually, so I fly back to LA and I start filming next week with him. That'll be so exciting.
QUINT: That's so cool, man. I'm a child of the '80s, so Bowie's been with me from an early age because of LABYRINTH. Then his music... I just can't wait to see him play Tesla. He's a perfect match for that...
ANDY SERKIS: Isn't he just, yeah! He's perfect casting. Really cool.
QUINT: You're playing his assistant, right?
ANDY SERKIS: That's right. I'm playing this character called Roger Alley who's kind of... He's very kind of defensive of Tesla and the AC current, you know, because of the DC current. (laughs)

Good luck with the filming David, "break a leg" or whatever you tell actors about to start filming...not literally of course...I'll sshhhh now.

Thanks to BowieNetter Mooch for the pointer.

Exclusive Bowienet Db/secret Machines Interview

So he told them his scheme for Secret Machines...

Regular visitors to these pages will know all about David Bowie and Secret Machines' respect for each other. David has been praising the band since a journal entry in October 2004 and Brandon Curtis of Secret Machines had some lovely things to say about DB as recently as last week. (03.16.2006 NEWS: BOWIE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON SECRET MACHINES)

To celebrate the release of the latest Secret Machines album, Ten Silver Drops, David has been talking to the band for an exclusive BowieNet interview.

The album has been available via iTunes since February 27th and has a general release date of April 24th/25th. Here's the tracklisting:

Ten Silver Drops
1 ~ Alone Jealous And Stoned
2 ~ All At Once (It's Not Important)
3 ~ Lightning Blue Eyes
4 ~ Daddy's In The Doldrums
5 ~ I Hate Pretending
6 ~ Faded Lines
7 ~ I Want To Know If It's Still Possible
8 ~ 1000 Seconds

During the interview, David talks to all three members of the band: Brandon Curtis (vocals/keys/bass), along with his brother, Ben Curtis (guitar) and Josh Garza (drums).

Apart from going through the album pretty much track-by-track, here's a random list of just a few of the subjects discussed: The formation of Secret Machines; New York heartache stories; Page 3 girls and the populist press; Martha's Vineyard; Connie Plank; Travelling fans; The advantages of writing for other people. David even took the time to ask the band what their parents do!

Bowie To Write For Broadway?

They say there´s always music in the air (on Broadway)... (Part 61)

I've had a few e-mail enquiries regarding a report on variety.com suggesting David Bowie may be involved with the writing of songs for a musical based on the life story of kung fu legend Bruce Lee.

Here's an edited excerpt from the Variety piece:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two massive Asian-themed shows are in simultaneous development. But only one dangles the possibility of an international space oddity from the West: David Bowie.

(After a paragraph about a legit version of Ang Lee-helmed pic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the piece continues thus...)

Then there's the new musical based on the life story of kung fu legend Bruce Lee, under development by Chi-based Elephant Eye Theatricals. That show's profile took a leap when Bowie was spotted in Toronto, yakking with director Matthew Warchus. Warchus is helming the "Lord of the Rings" musical in Toronto and was previously announced as director of the Lee project (David Henry Hwang has been tapped as book-writer). If the Bowie angle pans out, this will be the chameleon-like rock star's legit debut.

Producer (and former Disney Theatricals exec) Stuart Oken had no comment on Bowie's involvement as the writer of music and lyrics. He did say, though, that the Lee show will be a very different project from "Crouching Tiger," despite Lee's iconic status in the world of martial arts."Our show is a legit show," says Oken. "No flying. No wires. No Cirque-type stuff. I see us doing something far more in the mode of 'The Lion King.' Something low-tech." Oken says he's aiming for 2008 -- and plans at least two tryout cities prior to Gotham.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wouldn't normally respond to stories such as this until it's decided that such a thing can be officially confirmed or denied...particularly when the producer says he's aiming for a date as far away as 2008!

What I can say is that David Bowie has been pitched by several companies to write for Broadway, but has not as yet contracted with any one of them.

If he does sign for this or any other project, we'll obviously let you know.
