Tell him we've lost his necklace...

David Bowie has been filmed for a commercial promoting XM Satellite Radio in the U.S.

The thirty-second TV spot, called Lost, chronicles Snoop Dogg's search for a long lost necklace which is eventually revealed to have been 'borrowed' by David...see him proudly displaying said necklace in our exclusive shot above.

Starting tomorrow, (November 14th) Lost will premier on prime time Monday night TV in the U.S., and appearing along with DB and Snoop Dogg will be country music star Martina McBride, comic Ellen Degeneres and N.Y. Yankee superstar Derek Jeter.

Bowie Tribute Shows For November

And he was alright, the band was altogether...

Lots of live Bowie music to be had here and there during November...not by the man himself, of course, but it's all good stuff nevertheless. Sadly, I don't have any news regarding forthcoming shows by Ziggy Barlust, (above) but I couldn't let a chance to use that picture slip.

If anybody from the band is reading this, please get in touch with your forthcoming plans and we'll give you a plug...so to speak. You can find out more about Ziggy Barlust by clicking on the young man's packet in the picture above.

And so, without further ado, onto those that are definitely performing just for you this month...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First up, is Mr Mr Bowie Experience, Laurence Bolwell, (pictured above) who seems to play more shows than Robert Zimmerman himself. You rarely have to wait more than a couple of days to catch either Laurence solo or with the rest of The Bowie Experience somewhere in the UK...although invaiably it's going to be in the West Country.

Here's the remainder of Laurence's November dates:

November dates

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next up is less a tribute, but more a homage to the songs of David Bowie. Next Tuesday, November 15th, sees a rare one-off performance of the quite brilliant Darkness and Disgrace at The Drill Hall in London. Long-term BowieNet members will know all about this superb presentation which we've applauded many times over recent years. (04.05.2005 NEWS: DB STUFF IN LONDON AND D&D CD COMPETITION & 12.09.2003 NEWS: DARKNESS AND DISGRACE CD AND ONE-OFF SHOW)

Here's a bit from the Drill Hall website:

"Darkness and Disgrace, Des de Moor and Russell Churney's astonishing cabaret set of songs by bona fide British pop star David Bowie, has drawn rave responses from both Bowie and chanson fans in its many incarnations over the past few years, from theatre piece to CD.

By popular demand, Des and Russell have revived the show as an in-concert presentation.. An intimate and emotionally dynamic journey through a landscape populated by mod Newley-wannabes, sexually ambivalent science fiction apocalypse prophets, Brel-fixated trash theatre queens, drug-stupefied cold war romantics, pre-millenial art murderers and wild-eyed aliens from Bromley."

If you didn't manage to get tickets for Madonna at Koko in London on Tuesday, nip along to this instead...there'll be less dancing, but a lot more truly great music!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Space Oddity - David Brighton's Tribute to David Bowie - have a private East Coast show in Maine next Friday where they can offer a limited number of private invitations (complimentary passes) to BowieNetters. Because there are only a limited number available, BowieNetters are asked to request theirs in advance by e-mailing any of these three addresses:

BowieLive@aol.com, kallen@bowdoin.edu, BowieLive@juno.com

However, you may want to know the actual gig details before you place your request, so here they are:

Space Oddity - David Brighton's Tribute to David Bowie
Friday, November 18th
Showtime: 8pm - 9:30pm
Morrell Lounge in Smith Union at
Bowdoin College
6200 College Station
Brunswick, Maine 04011

(Private Invitations can be obtained in advance only)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lastly, (only because their gig is the furthest away...in measurements of time that is) The Thin White Duke play The Half Moon in London's Herne Hill on Saturday the 26th.

Dress in your finest Glam satin and tat and you'll gain free entry to the evening's fun...otherwise it's four quid.

Signed 'hours...' Hologram Contest Update

Waiting so long, I've been waiting so, waiting so...

Our sincere apologies are due to the winners of the exclusive signed David Bowie holograms whose names we listed two months ago today! (09.12.05 NEWS: SIGNED 'hours...' HOLOGRAM CONTEST WINNERS)

The holograms, which have been made especially for us by Martin Richardson, have now finally left these shores for NY after big production problems that Martin has been experiencing.

This man is an incredible perfectionist and I'm sure the five BowieNetters who have waited so patiently thus far (on the whole) will feel it will have been worth the wait.

David has a big fat Sharpie pen poised and ready to scribble his signature as soon as the holograms land on his writing bureau, and I'm hopeful we'll see the finished things within the next couple of weeks.

Extras - Will He Or Won't He?

It was cold and it rained so I felt like an actor...

By now everyone in the UK (and probably everywhere else come to that) must have seen reports in which Ricky Gervais is claiming to be in negotiations with David Bowie and Chris Martin of Coldplay, (among others) to appear in the second series of the hilariously awkward Extras.

Ricky has pretty well dropped David's name in all of his recent interviews on TV and radio in the UK, and the story hit the UK press with a bit in The Sun yesterday.

I asked DB if there was any substance to the story, and this was his measured response: "This may happen, yes. But it'll depend on what the weathers like next year." So let's pray the climate is pleasing to DB in 2006 as my mind is already working overtime trying to imagine what kind of character would be created for him.

For the first series, stars Ben Stiller, Ross Kemp, Kate Winslet, Les Dennis, Samuel L Jackson and Patrick Stewart all played distorted versions of themselves, all to cringingly convincing effect.

Ricky must be applauded for persuading Les Dennis to get his clobber off if nothing else...and for the incredible faces he pulls himself as a camp Genie of the Lamp in the same episode, which was one of the funniest things I've seen on TV, ever.

Check out the HBO Extras site here, the BBC Extras site here, and Ricky's official site here. Extras Series 1 is out now on DVD.

Bowie/arcade Fire Live Ep Digital Download

We've got five years, what a surprise...

Some of you may have heard an unfamiliar live version of Five Years on The Jonathan Ross Show on Saturday, which was rather intriguingly played with no announcement! (Listen Again = 2 hours 36 minutes)

Well, as the bat-eared among you may have spotted, it was actually the rather splendid version from Fashion Rocks with Arcade Fire.

The song is to be released as one of the tracks on an audio only digital EP, the other tracks being Wake Up with Arcade Fire and David's performance of Life On Mars? with Mike Garson from the same show.

The Live EP will be available via iTunes world-wide from November 21st. However, a download single only of Wake Up from the EP will be available via iTunes in the UK for one week only from November 14th.

Proceeds from the downloads will go to Hurricane Katrina relief charities.

Meanwhile, the UK single for Arcade Fire's own version of Wake Up will be released next Tuesday through Rough Trade. Sadly the CD & DVD versions of the single have now been dropped, and the recording will be available as a single-sided 7" vinyl single only.

The reverse side of the vinyl will be a specially designed etched graphic, following in the steps of previous vinyl singles from the band which have been variously: luminous, clear and white vinyl.

You can watch the video and pre-order the 7" of Wake Up here.

Congratulations are due to Arcade Fire for getting the #1 album of 2005 in the UNCUT top 100 with Funeral. Funny, it was David Bowie's album of the year in 2004 too!

Bowie Tracks On Three New Compilations

Wake up you sleepy head...

As I've said before, (05.17.2005 NEWS: BOWIE TRACKS ON THREE COMPILATIONS THIS MONTH) this is not so much news, more a service for completists, as I know there are a small band of collectors out there that must have every David Bowie release, even if it may not seem essential to the majority of you.

Having said that, the first of these three, Ian Dempsey's Kick Start, (actually released at the tail end of last month on October 28th) certainly couldn't be described as insignificant.

This double CD of "40 crackin' tracks to get you up and out!" was compiled from requests by Today FM Breakfast Show listeners and contains David Bowie's The Jean Genie. All profits from the sale of the album will be donated to the Go! campaign for Special Olympics Ireland.

You can view the full tracklisting and purchase the album here. The midweek chart suggests that Ian Dempsey's Kick Start will enter the Irish charts at #1.

The other two CDs are released by Virgin TV who have cornered the market with these compilations. (See aforementioned news story) Released next week on November 7th, School Reunion - the Party is a 62-track triple CD which contains Modern Love, and released the following week on the 14th is Capital Gold - Platinum Legends, a 63-track triple CD which contains Life On Mars?

Lexi Lunchbox Fetches Over $2k

Then I got the small red box...

For those of you that missed the auction end, the above lunchbox, painted by Lexi Bowie, (10.21.2005 NEWS: LEXI LUNCHBOX LIVE AT LAST) raised a remarkable $2,025.00 for the Celebrity Designed Lunchbox auction.

This makes it the second highest price of the 47 items so far auctioned by the charity, first place going to James Frey whose lunchbox commanded a $2,375.00 final bid.

There are twenty boxes still being auctioned, with more to come, including a small* red box by Bono, currently at $1,700.00.

Go here to view the currently active auctions.

*Actually, Bono's lunchbox is no smaller than any of the others on offer, (stop sniggering) but I had to make today's lyric quote work and at least it is red!

Do you walk in peace...

Although most of the Bowie products are still to be produced, the organisation has informed us that DB's Peace Thru Art wristband is now available to buy.

Still to come are porcelain plates, T-shirts and mugs. The limited edition plate and mug will be launched at Harrods in March 2006. We'll post more details on how to buy these items as they become available.

Uncut Tmwfte Special Out This Week

It will tumble from the sky...

The December edition of UNCUT magazine has a 12-page special on The Man Who Fell To Earth with fascinating new interviews by Rob Hughes with Nic Roeg and Candy Clark, among others.

The feature is packed with stunning pictures, (including some you may not have seen before) which I'm sure is no surprise to anybody reading this, seeing as how everybody knows Bowie's portrayal of Thomas Jerome Newton is the coolest rock star performance on celluloid of all time ...and that's a fact very much backed up by this UNCUT piece.

I won't give any more away than that as you might not buy a copy when UNCUT hits the shelves on Thursday otherwise.

Still hoping to run a competition for copies of the excellent Criterion two-disc edition of TMWFTE, if we ever get sent our copies that is.

Db And Sex In The Seventies

"Hang on a minute, mate...what am I doing here? !964 is sooo last week!"

You've got your mother in a whirl, She's not sure if you're a boy or a girl...

For those of you that have missed Spaceface's plugs in the BowieNet calendar, BBC2's four part series, Girls and Boys: Sex and British Pop, focuses on the 1970s this week.

As previewed in last week's programme, this second episode, called Oh You Pretty Things, will attempt to explain DB's (among others) contribution to the wonderfully confused ideologies of the Glam Rock era and beyond...during which, according to the BBC2 site, "David Bowie encouraged boys to play with their sisters' make-up boxes".

I think you'll agree that if any one person can be held responsible for the changing sexual attitudes in Britain during that decade, it was without doubt David Bowie.

Last week's look back at the 1960's featured a 40-year-old snippet from the BBC TV programme Tonight, (originally broadcast in November 1964) on which the young Davie Jones (see above) put forward his case for The Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Long-Haired Men ...a full 10 years before the lyric quotation above.

I'm sure you've all seen the full Tonight broadcast before, but it's always a treat to see again. Anyway, Oh You Pretty Things airs at 9:00pm in the UK on Sunday evening, and while I doubt we can expect anything new from it, I'm sure it's well worth a look.

Db Sees Ff And Tvotr In Nyc

"Whose the baddest boy here then?" "You is the bad, bad, baddest, Bowie!"

I saw boys, toys, electric irons and TV On The Radio...

As reported in the Daily Star earlier in the week and in today's Observer in the UK, DB attended the Franz Ferdinand show at New York's Madison Square Garden Theatre last Monday (October 18th).

TV On The Radio, who were one of the openers for FF, enjoyed a backstage visit from DB as evidenced in the picture above from lastnightsparty.com, where you can view a much larger version of the same shot and another picture of DB with the band and Karen O.

Here's a bit from today's Observer piece written by Andy Pemberton who met up with FF on the road in the US...

It was halfway through Franz Ferdinand's show last Monday at New York's Madison Square Garden theatre, that the band noticed a familiar-looking figure in the wings, tapping an expensively shod foot to the glam stomp of the Scottish quartet's latest single 'Do You Want To'. Earlier the Glasgow-based quartet had seen him poring over their setlist, expressing delight at some of the songs they intended to play that night.

'I spoke to him and I asked him if he'd ever been to Harlem,' recalls Franz Ferdinand's amiable guitarist Nick McCarthy three days later. 'He said the first time was, "When I was Ziggy." I thought, bloody hell, you really are that guy, aren't you?'

David Bowie, who's turned up to watch the band the last two times they've played in his adopted hometown of New York, is a committed Franz Ferdinand fan.

Well, as NME said after DB's visit to a Clap Your Hands Say Yeah show, "...you're no-one in America these days unless you've had David Bowie turn up at one of your shows..." Quite.

Thanx to BowieNetter loisroma for the pointer to the pictures.
