Db With Arcade Fire At Fashion Rocks?

The Arcade Fire in full flight at The Astoria in London back in May of this year.

There's no smoke without Arcade Fire, You're exactly who I want to be with...

Speaking of Montreal, (see yesterday's news) rumours abound that David Bowie will be backed by Montreal outfit The Arcade Fire at Fashion Rocks in New York next month. (07.27.05 NEWS: DB WILL PLAY FASHION ROCKS AT RADIO CITY)

Well, if it's true that some things are worth waiting for, I think you'll agree that David Bowie and The Arcade Fire together onstage would definitely be one of those things. Therefore, you'll just have to wait and see!

Meanwhile, the band has just released a limited edition clear vinyl 7" 45 of the exclusive track that was recorded for HBO?s hit series, Six Feet Under. The song is Cold Wind and it is backed by a version of the old standard, Brazil.

Rebellion is the next Arcade Fire single proper, due for a September 5th release, just in time for Fashion Rocks.

Marik Makes Magnificent Music In Montreal

Friday On My Mind...

BowieNetter FranksWildYears, aka Marik, performed a short but very sweet set of Bowie covers in Montreal last Friday the 5th by all accounts...and lord knows I was sent many accounts! (All gratefully received, of course.)

Under the banner of The Fantastic Voyage, Marik performed a set of seventeen songs that went something like this:

Buddha Of Suburbia
Time
Hang On To Yourself
Look Back In Anger
Fantastic Voyage
Shadow Man
Let's Dance (Bosanova)
TVC15
Word On A Wing
Life On Mars?
Slip Away
The Jean Genie
Teenage Wildlife
All The Young Dudes
Amsterdam (Marik's version)
Quicksand
Voyeur Of Utter Destruction (As Beauty)

Sadly, I wasn't there to witness what sounds like a spectacular presentation, but the BowieNetters that did attend were clearly impressed enough to write and tell me about it, so I'll hand over to them. First up is avogadro, who also took all of the great pictures of Marik on this page...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marik has a pure and powerful voice that is both warm and enchanting, and that moves you to the core. She presented a tribute to David in her own way and, believe me, she was incredible. It was really interesting to hear a woman sing my favourite Bowie?s hits. Her musicians did some arrangements to songs like Let?s Dance, she added saxophone to The Jean Genie. She interpreted extremely well very difficult songs such as Buddha of Suburbia, Voyeur of Utter Destruction and Amsterdam. This last song was really amazing and she changed the end to add some French to it.

When she sang, we felt her sensitivity; she was enjoying herself during the show. While Marik seemed a little insecure, her performance was outstanding. The only drawback was that the show was too short; We all wanted more.

Words fail me to describe such a tribute to Bowie. The band?s name is Fantastic Voyage and Marik made us travel through all eras of David Bowie?s career. Her band did a great job for all seventeen songs of the set list. All BNetters (and normal crowd) attending the show were simply blown away. She selected songs that we all love and some rare ones too. Such as Shadow Man for example.

That show started our Montreal meet-up with a bang; we had a fantastic week-end with BNetters from many places. - avogadro

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next up, BowieNetter prrrrr, aka Renata...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marik really did an outstanding job of interpreting Bowie's songs. As I understand it, the band had very little practice, as Marik had put them together just for this occasion since she left her band when she had bambino #3. Marik?s voice is beautiful, and each song was given her special touch. I have to say also, the songs she chose to perform were tremendous. We all came away with our favourites; there was something for everyone.

For me, Fantastic Voyage and Quicksand gave me goosebumps (and probably Life on Mars? too). The ultimate though was Voyeur. You wouldn?t believe the band on this one! Their interpretation left me speechless.

Of course, there were the usual festivities that go along with any BNetter get-together. Along with members local to Montreal there were those that travelled from Minneapolis, New Jersey, Michigan, as well as fellow Canadians from Windsor and Toronto.

I truly hope other BNetters get the opportunity to hear Marik?s interpretations. She plans to post a song weekly in Gallery. I, along with others that were there to experience that evening certainly think that as one of our own BNetters, Marik deserves every opportunity.

Cheers, Renata

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll leave you with two shorter bits from BowieNetters moonage_daydream and twozpots respectively...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I'm sure you've already heard, Marik's show was FANTASTIC. I thought she had a wonderful voice and it would actually even compliment David Bowie's voice quite well. Once you hear her CD, you'll see what I mean. I even drove a long way just to see the show, it was 12 hours each way. Thank you so much! - Denise aka moonage_daydream

I attended Marik's The Fantastic Voyage this past Friday night. What can I say, she really did take us on a Fantastic Voyage. Her voice is incredible and her rendition of Quicksand gave me chills.

I hope she will do this again so more BNetters can have the opportunity to hear her sing. Her performance was well worth the 14 hrs drive to reach her!!! - Melanie aka twozpots

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, if that doesn't intrigue you, I guess nothing will. I asked Marik how she thought the evening had gone and she replied: "It was a real pleasure to sing Bowie songs for Bowie's fans and I am planning to do it again next summer if it's possible...we'll see what happens."

You can read more of Marik's feelings about the show in her BowieNet Blog which you can reach by clicking on any of the above pictures.

I'm very much looking forward to hearing some of Marik's recorded work soon...and who knows, she just might venture a little further afield to give the rest of us a chance to hear that voice.

Ziggy Lp In Top Ten Most Seismic Events Ever

Ask your good friend Dylan, If he'd gaze a while down the old street...

UNCUT magazine celebrates it's 100th edition this month (September issue) with the top 100 "most seismic events in the last 50 years of sound and vision". The list is the result of a poll of rock and film stars to find the music, movies, TV shows and books that changed the world.

It's obviously a most contentious list, as these things always are, but here's what the magazine reckons the top 10 most seismic events were...

MUSIC, FILMS, TV AND BOOKS THAT 'CHANGED THE WORLD'

1 Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone
2 Elvis Presley - Heartbreak Hotel
3 The Beatles - She Loves You
4 The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
5 A Clockwork Orange
6 The Godfather and The Godfather II
7 David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars
8 Taxi Driver
9 Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols
10 The Prisoner

Robert Smith of The Cure was the man chosen to talk about the importance of the Ziggy Stardust album, and here's a small sample of what he had to say about it:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ziggy was the first album I actually went out and bought. In the same way that I liked Hendrix when I was growing up, I loved the idea Bowie represented 'the other' ? something that was completely alien to everything I'd experienced. I was 13 when this came out and it represented everything I wanted the world to be: alien, glamorous and totally cool.

Looking back, the Ziggy album really did divide everyone at our school. My friends ? whether they were male or female ? were determined by whether or not they liked the album. It was that important.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's a great issue with a few other nods to DB and a free Dylan CD to boot.

Richard Young Book And Exhibition

We live for just these thirty years...

Photographer Richard Young has published a book of his celebrity photographs covering the thirty-year period 1974 - 2004. Shooting Stars is a 260 page hardback published through Metro Books of London.

Of interest to most BowieNetters are a couple of shots from Live Aid in 1985, including one of DB with Sir Paul McCartney, and a full-page shot from Hammersmith Apollo in London in 2002, in which DB is wearing his shiny blue Hedi Slimane suit.

The Hammersmith picture is accompanied by a page of text by Richard regarding his first meetings with David in the sixties. The piece concludes with the following paragraph...

"I have photographed David many times over the years and I try never to miss an opportunity to see him perform. To me, he's the most stylish man in music - his taste in clothes is impeccable. Not only that, he is one of the nicest people in the business."

The shot above, of David and Iman at Novellis Restaurant, in London, in 1997 is from the gallery section on the official Richard Young site the official Richard Young site where you can also purchase prints, including one of DB stood in front of Peter Howson's controversial Croatian and Muslim painting at the Imperial War Museum in London in 1994. (David loaned the painting of a deeply disturbing rape scene to the museum for an exhibition at the time.)

Richard Young has an exhibition to tie in with the publication of Shooting Stars at The Hospital, 24 Endell Street, London WC2, called: 15 Minutes 30 Years of Celebrity, which runs until August 22nd.

Serious Moonlight Oz Dvd, Plus Emi Version Due

Under the moonlight, this serious moonlight...

I'm sure many of you have already seen an Australian version at various online stores, of the Serious Moonlight DVD due next month, and apparently already shipping in some areas.

The Region 0 PAL DVD doesn't seem quite as complete as the 1999 European version of the Disc, as it omits Cat People (Putting Out Fire).

An accompanying audio CD seems to lose yet another track with the omission of Cracked Actor as well as aforementioned feline/human ditty.

Those of you interested in owning a legit full version of the DVD, without shelling out silly money for either the original 1999 version, or indeed, for DVDs of questionable origin, may be pleased to learn that EMI plan to issue the complete DVD early next year.

Here's the tracklisting for the film that was shot in September 1983 in Vancouver, during the massively successful Serious Moonlight World Tour...

01 Introduction
02 Look Back In Anger
03 "Heroes"
04 What In The World
05 Golden Years
06 Fashion / Let's Dance
07 Breaking Glass
08 Life On Mars?
09 Sorrow
10 Cat People (Putting Out Fire)
11 China Girl
12 Scary Monsters
13 Rebel Rebel
14 White Light, White Heat
15 Station To Station
16 Cracked Actor
17 Ashes To Ashes
18 Space Oddity
19 Young Americans
20 Fame

Hopefully the DVD will include the behind-the-scenes Ricochet film as well as other extras that we'll tell you more about nearer the release date.

BowieNetters not familiar with Ricochet can view a low quality version of the film in eight instalments in the Special Features section of BowieNet. (Log in and click on the BOWIE tab next to the NEWS tab above)

Hologram Exhibition To Include 3d Bowie Images

So holographic...

Even though, for obvious reasons, the above image does it absolutely no justice, I'm sure most of you will remember the limited edition lenticular version of the 'hours...' CD.

The project was a collaboration between David Bowie, photographer Tim Bret Day, designer Rex Ray and holographer Martin Richardson. Aside from the CD sized version of the cover, there were also 200 40cm x 40cm promotional display units produced by Martin Richardson and signed by DB.

Again, as good as the lenticular version of the 'hours...' CD was, it really didn't give any clue to the brilliance of the images created by Martin, of whose work David said in 1999: "I don't think I've ever quite experienced Holograms like these they really are magnificent. They almost become part of one's family, and a very disturbing and 'otherly' family at that."

The technology has come on a long way in the last five years or so, and Martin, who is now a senior research Fellow at De Montfort University, Leicester, has a solo exhibition of his work, entitled Time, Space and Movement, at Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery in the UK, from Tuesday 16 August to Friday 30 September.

I spoke to Martin about the content of the exhibition and it sounds absolutely incredible from the descriptions he gave me. I'm sure you understand I can't illustrate anything holographic here, but aside from the meter square hologram of David turning and beckoning the viewer forth, there are many other mind-blowing exhibits...many of which beggar belief and just seem plain impossible.

The moving images of David were produced utilising some film that Martin shot during the photo shoot for 'hours...'. About 20 minutes of DB in 3D were made at the time, using a specially adapted movie camera normally used for the making of holograms.

Stay tuned for an incredibly generous competition related to the exhibition, the prize for which will be completely exclusive to BowieNet and one of the more desirable Bowie items we've ever had on here.

Meanwhile, here follows the press release with further details for those of you that are intending to attend...

3-D holograms bring virtual reality to 21st century art

High-tech holograms and digital wizardry will bring 21st century virtual reality images to the world of art at a ground-breaking exhibition at Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery from Tuesday 16 August to Friday 30 September.

Leading exponent of the medium Martin Richardson a senior research Fellow at De Montfort University, Leicester will present the culmination of his 20 years' development of three-dimensional, holographic and movie making expertise at the 'Time, Space and Movement' exhibition.

He will also lead several workshops to demonstrate his high-tech expertise to local enthusiasts.

The exhibits will include a floating 3-D image of a human head, large-scale projections of David Bowie and other holographic images, two-dimensional 'slices' taken from three-dimensional digital scans and 'lenticular' artworks.

"This is an exciting, leading-edge exhibition," said Clifton Stewart, who manages the Peterborough Digital Arts Gallery. "It provides a unique opportunity for local residents to experience an art-form that is still fighting for acceptance within the established artistic community.

"Digital art today attracts the same prejudices that greeted photography as it developed in the early 19th century, when it was dismissed as a mechanical recording medium. However, the manipulation of objects and lighting and the use of post-production techniques have made photography an accepted sector in the art world."

Peterborough City Council's Cabinet member for Community Services, Councillor Matthew Lee, added: "Martin Richardson is a leading exponent in the movement to win artistic acceptance for digital imagery and holography.

"His work challenges our understanding of 'visual reality' with an unsettling ambiguity. Some of the exhibits have an eerie, strangely beautiful, yet other-worldly nature. These artworks progress far beyond technological wizardry into 21st century art."

Admission to the art gallery is free. Opening times are: Tuesday to Saturday and Mondays during school holidays 10 am to 5 pm; Sundays 12 noon to 4 pm; Mondays during school term closed.

Ashes To Ashes Released 25 Years Ago Today

Do you remember a guy...

25 years ago, on August 1st 1980, David Bowie released the single that was to become his first legitimate UK number one hit with a new release...a mere sixteen years since his first release with Liza Jane and five years after the re-issued Space Oddity 45 which was his first actual UK number one.

The success of Ashes To Ashes, the first single from the forthcoming Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) album, proved just what a good luck charm Major Tom was...despite the maternal warning at the song's fade out.

Though Ashes To Ashes instantly became one of Bowie's best-loved songs among long-term fans and recent converts alike, sales of the 45 certainly weren't hampered by the issue of three different picture sleeves (above) each of which could have contained any one of four sheets of nine Bowie-designed stamps (below)...thereby creating a dozen permutations for the serious collector to seek out. (It wasn't easy...believe me!)

The single was backed by Move On from the previous album, (the criminally underrated Lodger) in Europe, and America got an extra taste of things to come with It's No Game as the flip.

The promotion of Ashes To Ashes will also be remembered for the ground-breaking and quite brilliant accompanying Bowie/Mallet-produced video, which featured DB in full Pierrot costume along with wonderfully dreamlike sequences featuring many of the major players of the fledgling New Romantic movement that was distressing parents all across the UK.

When informed of the single's success via a Trans-Atlantic telephone conversation with BBC Radio 1's Andrew Turner, David responded thus: "I see that as very exciting, what can I say? I?m very surprised. God bless the English public is what I say!"

25 years? I remember it like it was the day before yesterday. Where does the time go?

Lulu And Ziggy Pic Raises Over A Grand

To be right in that photograph...

The photograph of David Bowie and Lulu on eBay that we told you about a few days ago (07.28.05 NEWS: LULU AUCTIONS ZIGGY ON EBAY FOR CHARITY) reached a very impressive final bid of £1,031.00 (approx. $1,827USD).

The photograph, donated and signed by Lulu, is by far and away the most successful of Nigella Lawson's auctions, which is great news as all of the proceeds go to breast cancer charities.

While we're talking expensive photographs, the David Bowie: Pin Up exhibition (07.02.05 SNIPPET: LAST WEEK'S BOWIENET VIEW AT REDFERNS GALLERY) has been extended until Saturday August 13th - BowieNetters can still get a 10 per cent discount off the pictures in the gallery which can be viewed here.

Also, don't forget that the Suffragette Cities poster exhibition (07.05.05 NEWS: SUFFRAGETTE CITIES POSTER EXHIBITION AND BOOK) closes the day before on Friday August 12th.

Bowie As The Elephant Man: 25th Anniversary

I could play the wild mutation...

Today is the 25th anniversary of David Bowie's first onstage performance as The Elephant Man, in the stage play of the same name.

He opened at Denver Center of Performing Arts on 29th July 1980 and his exceptional performance drew the following sample press comments when the show transferred to Broadway later that year:

"shockingly good" - New York Post

"piercing and haunted" - New York Daily News

"preternaturally wise" - New York Times

David himself had this to say to The Daily Mirror at the time: "It is undoubtedly the biggest single challenge of my career. Going onto Broadway is the fulfilment of a great dream."

A trawl through futher press cuttings is a humbling experience as superlatives are rained upon his extraordinary interpretation of John Merrick without the aid of prosthetics or make-up.

David's triumph in the part was the subject of a BowieNet special feature, compiled five years ago by BowieNet members. (12.14.2000 NEWS: BOWIENET MEMBERS SPECIAL FEATURE : DAVID BOWIE in THE ELEPHANT MAN and 01.03.2001 SNIPPET: ELEPHANT MAN)

To celebrate the anniversary today, you can look once again at those reminscences, photographs and press cuttings by clicking on David's loincloth in either picture.

Lulu Auctions Ziggy On Ebay For Charity

Ziggy takes the weight off his platform boots,
while Brian Jones and the lovely Lulu look on.

He said I was his friend...

With a little over 24 hours to go, a photograph of David Bowie and Lulu from 1973 has already reached the incredible sum of £840.00 (approx. $1,465USD) on eBay.

Of course, it's no ordinary photograph, it has hung on singer Lulu's wall at her home since she received the print over thirty years ago, and she's signed it for good measure.

It's no ordinary eBay auction either. Celebrity chef, Nigella Lawson, who has a new lunchtime chat show on ITV in the UK, has an eBay page for which she encourages guests on the show to donate an item for auction, the proceeds of which go to breast cancer charities.

Lulu was a recent guest, as witnessed by BowieNetter jungtheforeman, and her generous donation is easily the most successful of Nigella's auctions so far. Long before the auction has even ended it already commands the highest price of Nigella's dozen or so auctions to date.

The picture itself (above), is from the same session as the one at the top of this piece. Many different shots from this session (including colour ones) were used in the press around the time of the release of Lulu's Bowie/Ronson-produced The Man Who Sold The World/Watch That Man hit single. But, without double-checking, I have a feeling that this exact eBay shot is actually unpublished.

The photograph is framed and measures approximately 29? x 23?. Ignore the cloudy blurred bits, they're just the reflection of the chap that took the shot for the auction.

You can join in the bidding by clicking on either of the above pix. You can also read more about Nigella's Online Auctions here.

Db Will Play Fashion Rocks At Radio City

It was a day in that blue month September...

Despite reporting that David Bowie plans no live work for 2005 earlier in the year, (02.02.2005 NEWS: NO BOWIE LIVE DATES PLANNED FOR 2005) we are thrilled to confirm his return to the stage for the Fashion Rocks event that is taking place at Radio City Music Hall in New York on September 8th.

What I can say is that he is planning to perform just one number and that tickets go on sale for this unique appearance this coming Friday the 29th at 10:00am local time.

Apart from David Bowie the line-up so far includes: Destiny?s Child, Duran Duran, Billy Idol, Alicia Keys, Tim McGraw, Gwen Stefani, Joss Stone, Rob Thomas and many more yet to be announced.

David Live And Stage Dvd-audio Release Date

Waiting so long, I've been waiting so, waiting so...

As you may have noticed, we've been loath to give a release date for the 5:1 David Live and Stage DVD-Audios since we first announced that they would be produced almost a year ago. (08/25/04 NEWS: DAVID LIVE AND STAGE REISSUE DETAILS)

The delay has apparently been of a technical nature due to the size of the audio files which have needed very careful encoding. I guess this technology is relatively new territory, and I think you'll agree that after waiting this long it's best that the discs are exactly right.

At the moment both David Live (DVDA 874 3049) and Stage (DVDA 863 4369) are due for a November 14th release (15th in North America), though I wouldn't be surprised if this date is revised by a week or two nearer the time.

I've not been told that any of the previous technical information has changed, so here it is again for those that missed it last time around. This is what each DVD-A will contain...

~ MLP 5.1 (for playing on DVD-A players) 48kHz 24 bit
~ DTS 5.1 (for playing on DVD-A and DVD-V players) 48kHz 24 bit
~ Stereo (new mix as per released CD's playable on DVD-A and DVD-V players) 48kHz 24 bit
~ Photo gallery which will include images used on packaging, and scans of related record sleeves, press adverts and memorabilia.

So here's to November, when you too can experience exactly what it was those lucky listeners got to hear at Abbey Road back in February. (02.14.05 NEWS: ABBEY ROAD PLAYBACK...BOWIENETTERS REPORT)

Happy Birthday To Iman From Bowienet

Copyright © 2005-2008 ImanCosmetics.com. All Rights Reserved.

Forget that I'm fifty...

While it ill-becomes a gentleman to reveal a lady's age, I know you'll understand that I'm clearly no gentleman and it's hardly a secret that the incredibly youthful Iman is fifty today.

I'm nervous about making too much of a fuss about it though, after reading this exchange in a recent interview...

Q: In July, you will turn 50. How do you feel about getting your AARP card?

A: Turning 50 seems to be more of a milestone for the people around me than it is for me! My life has never been more rich and exciting, and the good things in my life give me the energy of a 25-year-old.

Regardless, I know you'll all want to join me in wishing Iman a very special day, which shouldn't be too hard when you look and feel like that and you have the company of such a wonderful family.

Happy birthday Iman, with much love from everybody at BowieNet.

(NB: I'd like to use this opportunity to thank all of those who pointed out via e-mail and the like that color is in fact the American spelling of the more correct colour. Well I never! (07.20.05 NEWS: NEW IMAN BEAUTY GUIDE DUE IN THE AUTUMN) More importantly, I'd like to thank those that didn't e-mail me!)

New Iman Beauty Guide Due In The Autumn

While colour lights up your face...

Iman has a brand new beauty guide for girls (and boys) of colour which is due to go on sale in the US on October 11th and in Europe on November 17th.

The 176 page hardcover published by Putnam Adult is called: The Beauty of Color: The Ultimate Beauty Guide for Skin of Color and is available for pre-order through all decent online outlets such as BARNES&NOBLE and amazon.

Here's the press release for those of you that have had your fancy tickled thus far...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the beloved fashion icon and cosmetics entrepreneur, the first book to embrace global beauty and women of all ethnicities.

Few faces are as instantly recognizable as that of Iman's. She's been a groundbreaking supermodel for the world's top designers and a muse for photographers, and she is the founder of the world's most popular cosmetic brand for skin of color.

Now, in an era when the face of beauty has changed-and the most celebrated women in Hollywood include such stars as Halle Berry, Jennifer Lopez, and Lucy Liu - Iman delivers a new approach to makeup and skin care. With The Beauty of Color, she revolutionizes the way women of color can think about the way they look and feel.

Iman resists categorizing people according to ethnicity, and instead embraces the whole range of skin color-light to dark. This is the first beauty and makeup book to truly address skin tones across the spectrum-Latina, Black, Asian, Indian, Native American, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, as well as women of mixed ethnicities.

Inspired by her two illustrious careers-first as a world-class supermodel and then as founder of two of the world's top cosmetics lines - Iman is uniquely aware of the difficulties women of color have always had with skin care and makeup. In The Beauty of Color, Iman teaches readers how to work with skin care regimens and palettes targeted to their exact skin tone and type.

With stunning color photographs and images on every page, the book itself is a work of beauty, featuring Salma Hayek, Tyra Banks, Venus and Serena Williams, and other celebrities, as well as ordinary women of all ages. Unique, informative, and creative, The Beauty of Color is not only the first book to show women of every shade how to look their very best, but is also a landmark celebration of global beauty.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Something I feel duty-bound to point out if you're reading this Iman...and please don't shoot the messenger...But, it looks like they spelt colour wrong on the cover, twice! };-)

New Mix Of Fame On Hip Hop Roots Cd

"Is she or isn't she?" DB favours a spray of Harmony between
takes during the recording of Fame on Soul Train, November 1975.

Fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, etc....

You may have heard about the forthcoming 12-track compilation CD due next month called: Tommy Boy Presents: Hip Hop Roots. The album contains David Bowie's classic track, Fame, from Young Americans just in time for the 30th anniversary of the release of the single.

Compiled by Tom Silverman, founder and CEO of Tommy Boy, the release features: "twelve of the most sampled tracks that would become building blocks of Hip Hop music."

I was surprised to see Fame clocking in at four minutes and fifty seconds on the promo CD. (The normal album version is 4:12 while the single edit is just 3:25)

I think a clue to this different edit lays in the press release, which states: "Legendary DJ and producer, Jazzy Jay, added his extra special flavor to the compilation by editing a few tracks the way he would have done live in 1980, at the T-Connection." So I'm guessing that Fame is one of the tracks that received this treatment.

It seems that after the familiar intro, the extra 25 seconds or so are spliced in so that the descending "Fame, fame, fame, fame..." hook is included before the main vocal starts...which now doesn't come in for a minute and a quarter.

While it doesn't sound a big deal, it actually works really well and I don't think people who aren't as familiar with the song as you or I would necessarily notice. It's just a great way of getting a longer version of the track without it being a nasty remix.

As I'm sure you all know, Fame was David's first US #1 and it probably helped secure him a place as one of the first white musicians to appear on Soul Train (see pic above) on which he also performed Golden Years from the forthcoming Station To Station album.

I'll leave you with the press release, followed by the CD cover and track listing...

Tommy Boy Presents: Hip Hop Roots

Tom Silverman, founder and CEO of Tommy Boy announces the release of HIP HOP ROOTS on both CD and double vinyl. Personally selected and compiled by Silverman, this collection features twelve of the most sampled tracks that would become building blocks of Hip Hop music.

From Rock hits like Billy Squier's "The Big Beat" most recently featured on Jay Z's "99 Problems" to Bob James' "Take Me to the Mardi Gras" sampled by Run DMC for "Peter Piper" and LL Cool J on "Rock the Bells"...From Cymande's "Bra" most popularly used in DJ Kool's "Let Me Clear My Throat" to outerspace hits like UFO by ESG heard in Man Parrish's electro hit, "Boogie Down Bronx".... From David Bowie's Rock/Funk hit "Fame" lifted by Public Enemy for "Night of the Living Baseheads" to the Monkees' "Mary Mary" quoted by Run DMC for their hit of the same title...Disco, Funk, Soul, Rock, Jazz, Pop and Reggae were united and extended under the DJs hands to mold into Hip Hop.

In his liner notes, Silverman hearkens back to 1980, in the "Breaks Room", at Downstairs Records, where a "music revolution was being born." In this room, one could buy vinyl by artists such as "Dennis Coffey, Bob James, Jimmy Castor, The Eagles, Incredible Bongo Band, Herman Kelly and Life, The Monkees and so many more that seemingly had nothing to do with each other" except for the fact that the founding fathers of Hip Hop, were digging them up and rocking them in the Bronx.

He also recounts, in 1980, going to the legendary T-Connection, in the Bronx, to see Afrika Bambaataa spin. "There, working the turntables, was Afrika Bambaataa... To his left and right were Jazzy Jay and Red Alert waiting for their turn to mix... Some of the records had the label steamed off so other DJs would not know what he was playing. Evidently his efforts were in vain because 25 years later, DJs and producers are still relying on the beats that he, Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash discovered."

Legendary DJ and producer, Jazzy Jay, added his extra special flavor to the compilation by editing a few tracks the way he would have done live in 1980, at the T-Connection.

Tom Silverman summarizes, "I believe that the strength of Hip Hop over 26 years unlike any other kind of music has been its inclusive nature. Rather than be elitist or separatist, Hip Hop is accepting and absorbing of outside influences. African, Latin, Disco, Funk, or the corniest Pop or soundtracks were accepted and made the genre stronger just as America is made strong by its confluence of cultures and rainbow of peoples."
