Lou Reed Competition Winners
You made me forget myself...
The Lou Reed competition that we set last month (05/10/03 NEWS: LOU REED TALKS ABOUT NYC MAN AND DAVID BOWIE & 05/19/03 NEWS: LOU REED COMPETITION EXTENDED) is now over. Five signed Lou photographs like the one above (except the signature is in black) have arrived here at BowieNet to be distributed to our winners.
The original prize was to have been signed CDs, but we got these instead and I'm sure the winners will be just as happy with one of these valuable signed prints.
Anyway, we asked you to identify the Bowie connection in eight of the tracks from the Lou Reed retrospective NYC Man - The Ultimate Lou Reed Collection. Off the top of my head, here are a few that most of you got:
Sweet Jane
Along with I?m Waiting For The Man and White Light/White Heat, David and Lou performed Sweet Jane together at the Royal Festival Hall, (venue for Bowie's 2002 Meltdown) when Lou guested with David and The Spiders for his very first UK appearance on July 8th 1972.
David also produced Mott The Hoople's All The Young Dudes album, on which Sweet Jane was the first track.
I'm Waiting For The Man
David recorded a version of this song in 1966 toward the end of the sessions for the Deram album, David Bowie. This version was actually recorded before The Velvet Underground's own version had even been released, after David received an acetate of The Velvet Underground and Nico, on which I'm Waiting For The Man appeared.
In fact, so enamoured was David with The Velvets that he recorded another song called Little Toy Soldier during the same sessions, which was basically a re-write of Venus In Furs with loads of Bowie strangeness thrown in for good measure. Although neither of these recordings were officially released, they are both widely available on bootleg.
The song was also played on various BBC sessions and on tour in 1972, 1973, 1976 and 1997.
White Light/White Heat
White Light/White Heat was played on various BBC sessions and on tour in 1972, 1973, 1983, 1987, 1990, 1996, 1997 and 2002.
A version apparently recorded during the Pin-Ups sessions, but abandoned by David, was resurrected by Mick Ronson for his own Play Don't Worry album, complete with a new Ronno vocal.
Walk On The Wild Side
Vicious
Perfect Day
Satellite Of Love
The four songs above all appeared on the Bowie/Ronson-produced solo Lou Reed album, Transformer. Though David contributed greatly to songs like New York Telephone Converstaion (in effect a one minute duet with Lou), his greatest vocal contribution can be heard on the sublime Satellite Of Love. Here's Lou from the liner notes of NYC Man:
David Bowie's background vocals - I love them on his records, I love them when he did them on my record. It's not the kind of part I would have ever come up with if you left me alone with a computer program for a year. But David hears those parts. Plus he's got a freaky voice and he can go up that high and do that. It's very, very beautiful. And he's a great singer.
The world-wide smash hit single Walk On The Wild Side should be noted for a wonderful sax solo played by David's former saxophone tutor, Ronnie Ross, and also for a widely sampled bassline provided by another musician familiar to Bowie fans who know their stuff, Herbie Flowers.
David also sang a couple of lines, and appeared in the video for a re-recorded all-star version of Perfect Day, that was released by the BBC in 1997 for the BBC Children In Need campaign. The single went to number one in the UK and raised over £2 million.
Dirty Boulevard
This song originally appeared on Lou's 1989 release, New York. David sang Dirty Boulevard live with Lou when he was joined by Mr Reed onstage at Madison Square Garden on January 9th 1997, during David's 50th birthday bash. The two also performed I?m Waiting For The Man and White Light/White Heat during the show.
Going by that track record, (remembering the RFH July 8th 1972) David and Lou are due to perform I?m Waiting For The Man White Light/White Heat and another Lou Reed song at a Bowie show in 2022.
So there you have it. The five people below provided enough correct information to be selected by The Random Generator as winners:

Ziggy 30th Anniversary London Screening
Gimme your hands 'cos you're wonderful...
If you're in London on July 3rd you may want to keep the evening clear for a special anniversary screening of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars: The Motion Picture, exactly 30 years to the day after the original concert at Hammersmith Odeon.
Stay tuned for more details in the next day or two... but for now, be sure to have mum and dad's permission to stay out late. };-)

Elsewhere in the piece, David hints further at the flavour of the record: "The irrational feelings that you get on a day-to-day basis living here since 9/11, have left a decided mark on this record." He continues to suggest a certain urgency to the recording when he quotes an old friend: "John Lennon's idea of rock & roll was 'Say what you mean, make it rhyme and then put a backbeat to it,' That's precisely what this album is all about."
When I asked David about the equipment he was using in the shot, he explained: The guitar is my
For those of you just as interested in David's clothing as his equipment (Oooer), you may be pleased to learn that the rather sporty top he is wearing is in fact a Cambridge University Rugby Union Football Club shirt... which, if you fancy one for yourself, is purchasable

Db On Last Night's Dinner With The Beckhams
David and Iman arriving at the Beckham's dinner last night.
Picture courtesy of James Devaney and WireImage.com.
New York's a go-go and everything tastes nice...
David and Iman were invited guests last night when Anna Wintour hosted a dinner for British couple Victoria and David Beckham. The event took place at SoHo House in New York, and DB had this to say about the evening and the charming young Mr Beckham:
Becks is a lovely man. I had not met him before, though we have a couple of mutual mates. He's easy going and a thoroughly good egg. Dinner was at the newly opened Soho House private club, part of the London Soho House operation. Six floors with everything from sleep-over rooms to a cinema. Cool place. Calvin was there, also Damon Dash who is inked to do a Posh album.
Becks wore an extraordinary watch that a small family could crouch on. Designed and given by Jacob Arobo (a.k.a. "Jacob the Jeweler"). Utterly big, ghetto fabulous, Bling Bling goes the bell (whistle?).
DB also sent in this useful little piece of advice from the aforementioned Jacob Arabo:
HOW TO PICK OUT JEWELRY FOR YOUR FAVORITE RAPPER
By Jacob Arabo ? a.k.a. Jacob the Jeweler
Hip-hop?s bling-enhancer of choice Rappers need to stand out. Jay-Z likes a men?s tennis bracelet, maybe a small pinkie ring. DMX buys mostly for his wife, but for himself he likes high quality ? classy watches, and maybe one earring. Rappers especially like logo pendants. Logos are tax-deductible, because they?re considered advertising. My clients don?t like me to discuss cost, but my jewelry is not cheap. It might cost as much as a car ? be it a Toyota or a Rolls-Royce, I can?t say.
For the starspotters among you, apart from David and Iman and The Beckhams, the following were also guests last night:
Calvin Klein, Damon Dash, Diane Von Furstenburg and Barry Diller, Jimmy Fallon, Justin Portman and Natalia Vodianova, Kenneth Cole, Mario Testino and Frankie Rayder, Narciso Rodriguez, Ric Pipino, Stella Tennant and Karolina Kurkova and Narciso Rodriguez.

New Welcome Message From David... And More
They got a message from the action man...
On your way here today, you may have noticed a great new welcome message from David, wherein he talks briefly about the forthcoming album and tour, and in which he also breaks the wonderful news that he will be chatting with you BowieNetters in the not too distant future.
By the time you reached the INFECTIOUS and MUTATIONS sections (see screen grab above) you may have noticed a new layout, which apart from incorporating David's new message, now incorporates the A&E Live By Request broadcast and a new feature called The BowieNet Trivia Pool.
The BowieNet Trivia Pool is a new tool that explains itself pretty succinctly when you click on it. The idea is that you will all be able to contribute questions for future trivia chats, and the harder you make them, the better. Obviously we will check on the accuracy of any contributions before we start dishing out Bowie goodies from the vaults.
I think you'll agree, it's all jolly good stuff. Click on the image above to, erm... well, to bring you back to BowieNet actually!
Re-recorded Rebel Rebel Release Date
You want more and you want it fast...
The soundtrack CD for the new Charlie's Angels film, Full Throttle, that we told you about a couple of months back, (03/27/03 SNIPPET: DREW BARRYMORE WRESTLES WITH BOWIE & 08/18/02 SNIPPET: DREW BARRYMORE GETS THE ALADDIN SANE TREATMENT) now has a release date of June 24th.
The CD contains a studio re-recording of David Bowie's Rebel Rebel, that uses the same arrangement as the version of the song David played live last year. Here's the full listing:
01. Livin' On A Prayer - Bon Jovi
02. Centerfold - The J. Geils Band
03. Working For The Weekend - Loverboy
04. Surfer Girl - The Beach Boys
05. Last Dance - Donna Summer
06. U Can't Touch This - M.C. Hammer
07. Rebel Rebel - David Bowie
08. I Just Want To Be Your Everything - Andy Gibb
09. Thunder Kiss '65 - White Zombie
10. Wild Thing - Tone-Loc
11. Firestarter - Prodigy
12. The Pink Panther Theme - Hollywood Studio Orchestra
13. Flashdance...What A Feeling - Irene Cara
14. Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting - Nickelback feat. Kid Rock
Not a great line-up, IMHO, but surely worth the price of the CD for this cracking new version of Rebel Rebel alone!? Click on the image above to take you to the official Full Throttle site.
Db And The Mayor Of Sunset Strip
Rodney and DB, Los Angeles, December 6th 1997.
I am a DJ, and I've got believers...
You should have all now received an e-mail regarding a BowieNet exclusive preview of the new George Hickenlooper documentary film, The Mayor Of Sunset Strip. The film concerns itself with the life and times of the famous LA DJ,
Perhaps most famous for Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco of the early Seventies and his hugely successful, world-famous show, Rodney On-The-ROQ on Los Angeles' KROQ-FM, Rodney has always had his finger on the pulse, as confirmed by David in 1992:
"Alone in L.A. Rodney seemed like myself, an island of anglo 'nowness'. He even knew British singles and bands that I wasn't aware of. There was nothing about him that wasn't 'on'. Rodney single-handedly cut a path through the treacle of the 60's, allowing all we 'avants' to parade our sounds of tomorrow, dressing in our clothes of derision."
The film will make it's world premiere at the LA Film Festival on June 17th at 7:30pm at the ArcLight Cinerama Dome on Sunset Blvd, but we have a first showing of a three-minute clip that includes footage of David with Rodney, wherein DB is sporting the short-lived Mohawk/Mohican hairstyle (anybody know what is the difference between them?) that he wore briefly at the end of 1997.
If you've not yet received your e-mail, click on the screen grab above to take you to the clip, and go

(If) I can talk on television...
Last week saw the telecast of the annual Daytime Emmy Awards. The winner in the 'Outstanding Special Class Special' category was Hollywood Rocks The Movies: The 1970'S (AMC) hosted and narrated by David Bowie.
You will remember that we brought you details of this great show last year (08/26/02 SNIPPET: FORTHCOMING DB ON TV) when it first aired in the USA. Congratulations to David and all involved!

Have you have been an un-American?...
Starring a 'dazzling' Nicole Kidman, and currently wowing Cannes Film Festival goers is writer and director Lars Von Trier's (Dancer In The Dark) latest offering - Dogville. This unusual film, the first part of a proposed trilogy, was shot entirely on one soundstage and has a set is so minimalist that even the town dog is just a chalk drawing. Here's a paste from the official synopsis.
The beautiful fugitive, Grace (Nicole Kidman), arrives in the isolated township of Dogville on the run from a team of gangsters. With some encouragement from Tom (Paul Bettany), the self-appointed town spokesman, the little community agrees to hide her and in return, Grace agrees to work for them. But Grace has a secret and it is a dangerous one.
Music is a 'supporting actor' in all of Lars Von Trier's films, and here Young Americans plays over the closing credits. Metro magazine has this to say:
...a staggeringly powerful closing credit sequence juxtaposing images from the American depression and war and poverty around the world with David Bowie's Young Americans is simply brilliant.
You can also check out this article in Time Europe Magazine, in which the director describes David Bowie as "a god".

Aladdin Sane 30th Anniversary Cd Winners
Now I need you more than ever...
The competition we set a few days ago (05/20/03 NEWS: WIN ONE OF TEN ALADDIN SANE ANNIVERSARY CDs) was another popular one with around fifty percent of entrants providing correct answers. I've slowed down the animation and put the titles back on the sleeves of the above five Aladdin Sane related picture cover 45s.
As you can now see, the A-side titles that the winners supplied were Let's Spend The Night Together (x3), The Jean Genie and Time. Some of you even went as far as listing the B-sides and the country of origin, there was no need, but well done anyway.
The one sleeve that threw most of the 50 per cent of you with wrong answers, was the white one, which was in fact the Brazilian release of Let's Spend The Nigth* (sic) Together. Many of you mistook this for similar variations of the Drive-In Saturday sleeve.
Anyway, here are the ten winners, who will no doubt be pleased to learn that their prizes will be posted this very morning, depending on how heavy a night Postmistress Susans has had... only jokin' Sus!

Your Chance To Own A Db Polaroid
I keep a photograph...
Coming up on June 9th at the Chelsea Art Museum in New York is a benefit evening with a difference. A 'Live and Silent' Auction of exclusive POLAROID images taken by artists, photographers and celebrities is scheduled to take place, the proceeds of which will benefit the organisation Free Arts for abused children of NYC, and David Bowie is one of the contributors.
You can preview some of the polaroids here, although David's contribution is not available to view at the moment. Tickets for the evening start at $150.
Enjoy!

Aladdin Sane, Nme And Stuff
Who will love Aladdin Sane...
The Aladdin Sane double disc 30th anniversary edition has started to appear in the press, including, among other things, the two full-page adverts above, (UK and France) and an eight out of ten review in the current NME... We all know the album deserves a ten out of ten, but believe me, that's an uncharacteristically generous rating for NME! To put it into perspective, no other album (new or reissue) had a higher rating this week. Here's a bit of that review:
How much of a roll was David Bowie on by 1973? The kind that saw him giving away songs of the calibre of 'All The Young Dudes' to Mott The Hoople (who took it to Number One) and releasing this, the wired hangover to 'Ziggy Stardust...''s superstar excess.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ian McCulloch and The Matrix.
While we're flipping through the NME, this week's Burn It guest is Ian McCulloch. Ian has been featured on this site a few times over the years, and he's made his love of DB's music very clear. But do you think he chose a Bowie song? Well, he did choose The Velvet Underground, Iggy and The Stooges and The Dandy Warhols among others, but he didn't think of including a Bowie tune! That's because his daughter selected John I'm Only Dancing for him:
My eight-year-old daughter mentioned this. So I'm choosing this because I've got a really cool daughter who's a right little rock 'n' roller.
As if Ian wouldn't have chosen a Bowie track without encouragement from his daughter! Ian's cover of The Prettiest Star that he recorded for the UNCUT Ziggy special (01/09/03 NEWS: UNCUT ZIGGY SPECIAL CD TRACKLISTING) will be one of the B-sides on his next single, Love In Veins, due on July 7th. Love In Veins is the second single to be taken from his latest album, Slideling. Coincidentally, an original working title for Aladdin Sane was Love Aladdin Vein.
Elsewhere the NME's news section has a half-page about The Matrix production team fulfilling a long-held dream with the possibility that they may mix some of David's new songs. We'll obviously let you know if anything comes of that.

Aladdin Sane competition update and pre-order site.
Don't forget the Aladdin Sane competition that we set a couple of days ago (05/20/03 NEWS: WIN ONE OF TEN ALADDIN SANE ANNIVERSARY CDs) ends tomorrow night. It seems most of you have managed to work out the right answers, certainly a few hundred more of you than the ten BowieNetters who'll be winners.
Aladdin Sane is due on Monday here in the UK, and EMI international have assured me that the world-wide release date should be the same, except for the one-day delay in the USA. But I have had conflicting information on this, with some listing the US date as far away as June 24th. However, if your local record emporium is not giving you a satisfactory guarantee that they'll be stocking it quickly enough for you, you may want to pre-order from the BowieNet store instead.
You can reach the Aladdin Sane pre-order page by clicking on the image above.
If you've not been keeping an eye on the recent news items about this release, you can find out all you want to know about it by checking out the press release
