I feed the pigeons in New York and I dig everything...
The much anticipated David Bowie phone-in to yesterday's Jonathan Ross Radio Show was a lot of fun and full of surprises.
David's section started at about 2hrs 30mins into the show, but earlier Jonathan discussed David Bowie with both Rolf Harris (Stylophones, what else?) and Siouxsie and Budgie; who told a typical 'My God, I'm breathing the same air as David Bowie' anecdote from when they supported him on tour in the '80's.
Once David joined the show, his topics of conversation included mu-mus, Ricky Gervais, George Underwood, didgeridoos (he played a few snatches on air), his new pigeon shed (from which he was speaking while feeding the pigeons apparently), possible songs for the set lists for the autumn 'Reality' shows (!), and his appearance on Jonathan's TV show in September (of which more from us if and when it is confirmed). Just yer average celebrity chat really (not). David was as fascinating and eclectic as always. Here is a short extract:
JR: You must be enjoying this at the moment because 'Heathen' was such a huge hit for you, deservedly so.
DB: It was fantastic. Yeah. I can't think of anything better at the moment. I am producing music that I really feel proud of. I have got a fantastic band and the tours that we have been doing have just been going down a storm.
JR: And of course home life seems to be going great as well.
DB: Well the loveliest thing is we have just built a pigeon shed on top of the roof here which is really good.
JR: That's nice.
DB: So I am up here at the moment in the pigeon shed feeding the pigeons and I have got a little bunsen burner here so I can make coffee. But Moby's place, which is just over the road about two streets away, he's got me on to this - keeping pigeons.
JR: Do you send pigeons to each other?
DB: Yeah we send song ideas. We kind of tie them to the legs of the pigeons and send them backwards and forwards.
SusanS has been beavering away, transcribing the whole of the section of the show with David, and the show is already streaming online on this link. So you can listen again, or read the transcript, here, or even do both at the same time!
Spoiler Warning: If you don't want to know which songs have been chosen for the potential set list, then don't listen or read.
We were also treated to that promised 'first listen' to New Killer Star, whereupon the boards filled up with delighted posts in record time. And having had the track on heavy rotation, as have most of you I'm sure, I have to say I agree with all of them!
