And mountain magic heavy hung...
In a kind of follow up to yesterdays item about the generosity of BowieNetters when it comes to donating to charity, I thought I'd give you an update on BowieNetter Alboreto's charity walk in aid of Amnesty International. Unfortunately, due to the SARS outbreak, Alboreto's Great Wall Of China walk has been cancelled, but instead he will be off in a couple of days to walk in Cuba. Here's an edited excerpt from a piece posted on his website at the end of last month:
Last week the WHO and British Foreign Office declared all travel to Beijing unsafe due to the outbreak of SARS. This now meant that I would be unable to go to China. My options were as follows: wait until I could do the trip (probably September 2004), do another expedition some time next year, cancel it all, or go to either Peru or Cuba instead.
I came to the conclusion that Peru or Cuba would be best. But, the Inca Trail in Peru is very high and I didn't have time to prepare myself for the altitude sickness. And so Cuba, a country I have long wanted to visit, was the option for me. I was then advised that the trip would be brought forward to 10th May! I shall be flying to Havana and walking the Escambray Mountains down the east coast to Trinidad from where I will fly back. The whole trip takes 10 days.
The two items above, (donated by Tony Visconti and Rex Ray, and signed by David and each of the donors) sold on ebaY for an incredible total of £662 ($1,062). This now means that Alboreto has not only achieved the minimum amount he needed for the trip, but he has exceeded it by around £1,000 ($1,604)!
Well done Alboreto, have a safe journey, and we look forward to your report on your return. Click on the image above to take you to Alboreto's home page.
