Heathen Enters Top 15 In 15 Countries

Just a handful of the Bowie front covers that have appeared round the globe in the last couple of weeks.
Thanks to those of you who have contributed scans...you know who you are!

I've charted all over the world...

Loads more first week chart positions for 'Heathen' have been announced, one of the more exciting of those being the US position of number 14! That's the highest US chart entry since 'Tonight', which reached #11 in 1984. So far that means that David has 16 top twenty positions, 12 of which are top ten! Australia doesn't have 'Heathen' just yet, but hopefully the album will perform similarly there shortly.

Here follows a recap of the positions we have so far, including one for Iceland from the MBs (thanks Bjossilu). Below this run-down of positions is a press release with a whole bunch of quotes from recent reviews, mainly American, that no doubt helped a few nervous buyers to decide.

Denmark #1
Norway #2
France #3
Iceland #3
Austria #4
Germany #4
UK #5
Ireland # 6
Italy #6
Sweden #6
Canada #9
Japan #10
Finland # 11
Belgium # 12
US #14
Holland #19

BOWIE'S BACK:
'HEATHEN' DEBUTS IN TOP 15 IN 14 COUNTRIES INCLUDING THE U.S.

Heathens around the world have united.

DAVID BOWIE's newly released HEATHEN (ISO/Columbia)-his 25th album-is making a powerful impact all over the globe. Riding a wave of critical acclaim that's ranking the album among his best work, HEATHEN entered the top 15 in 14 countries: the U.S. (#14, marking his highest first week chart entry in the SoundScan era), U.K., Canada, Germany, France, Japan, Ireland, Italy, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Belgium. This list includes six top 5 debuts: Denmark (#1), Norway (#2), France (#3), Germany (#4), Austria (#4) and the U.K. (#5).

"Here, for the first time in decades, he collaborates with producer Tony Visconti, he of 'Low' and 'Heroes' fame, and the effect is suitably thrilling," wrote Jim Nelson in GQ, (6/02), while Jeff Gordinier hailed the HEATHEN as "...a grand and haunted album..." in an Entertainment Weekly cover story (5/31/02). Richard Cromelin, writing in the Los Angeles Times (6/16/02), hailed the album as "rich, direct, emotional and sometimes playful," with the Associated Press' Jim Collins declaring it "A masterpiece from a rock 'n' roll master (appearing in the Cleveland Plain Dealer 6/16/02)." Rolling Stone's David Fricke summed it up by saying that HEATHEN is "...Bowie playing Bowie, with class (6/20/02)."

BOWIE recently performed a sold-out show for BowieNet members at NYC's Roseland June 11, followed by an outdoor mini-concert for the Today Show June 14 which attracted some 5,000 fans to Rockefeller Plaza in NYC (this figure equals the crowd size for *NSYNC's Today Show appearance) despite rainy weather..

Next, BOWIE heads to London's annual Meltdown--where he's serving as this year's festival director-for his special concert, 'THE NEW HEATHENS' NIGHT, June 29 at the Royal Festival Hall. This will be followed by performances at a number of high-profile European festivals, beginning July 3 at Kristinansand, Norway's Quart Festival, through July 18 at the Montreux, Switzerland Jazz Festival. BOWIE then returns to the States for the Area2 tour, starting July 28 in Washington, DC and visiting 12 cities throughout the summer, ending August 16 in Seattle. The trek also features tour founder Moby along with Busta Rhymes, Carl Cox and many others.

Meanwhile, fans who missed BOWIE's June 15 A&E "Live By Request" two-hour concert special should tune into the encore broadcasts airing Sunday, June 23 from 5:00-7:00 PM (ET/PT) and Thursday, June 27 from 9:00-11:00 PM (ET/PT).

DAVID BOWIE'S 'HEATHEN':
Critical Soundbites

"A loose theme runs through these songs, covers included: the search for guiding light in godless night. But the real story is Heathen's perfect casting: Bowie playing Bowie, with class."
--David Fricke, ROLLING STONE, June 20, 2002

"Here, for the first time in decades, he collaborates with producer Tony Visconti, he of 'Low' and 'Heroes' fame, and the effect is suitably thrilling."
--Jim Nelson, GQ, June 2002

"It's relaxed, straightforward, quietly intense. Even the electronic adornments sound warm and organic in this melancholy world. Rich, direct, emotional and sometimes playful, it includes versions of songs by the Pixies, Neil Young and the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, along with BOWIE originals that recharge his basic themes of obsession, alienation and mortality."
--Richard Cromelin, LOS ANGELES TIMES, 6/16/02

"The album starts with 'Sunday' and ends with its title song, both hushed and haunted by mortality. In 'Heathen,' Mr. BOWIE sings, 'Still on the skyline, sky made of glass/Made for a real world, all things must pass.' The album was written well before Sept. 11, however, and the songs join a long line of Mr. BOWIE's apocalyptic scenarios...Between his own ruminations, he borrows 'Gemini Spacecraft,' the Pixies 'Cactus' and Neil Young's 'I Have Been Waiting For You'; in songs like 'Afraid' and 'I Would Be Your Slave,' he sings about love, insecurity and transience."
--Jon Pareles, NEW YORK TIMES, 6/9/02

"A masterpiece from a rock'n'roll master."
--Jim Collins, Associated Press/CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER, 6/16/02

"On Heathen, DAVID BOWIE has made a real DAVID BOWIE album-his first collaboration in 20 years with producer Tony Visconti, and by far his best work in ages."
--Lisa Robinson, VANITY FAIR, June 2002

"...his new songs...feature some of BOWIE's most dramatic vocals, exploiting the theatrical range of his patented bellow."
--Jim Farber, NEW YORK DAILY NEWS, 6/9/02

"...rank(s) among BOWIE's best...Heathen sports some of his finest songwriting since his seminal '70s work...A-"
--Ben Wener, ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 6/7/02

"The unsettling, and unsettled, arrangements turn out to be a fine match for songs that suggest a shaky, alien post-Sept. 11 universe. BOWIE, a downtown Manhattan resident, has said-including in this magazine-that he wrote material for Heathen before that catastrophic morning, which suggests he's either clairvoyant or just a generally nervous person...the album allows BOWIE to return to his eeriest character-let's call it Grim Shady-and it's still the best role of his life. B+"
--David Browne, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, 6/14/02

"BOWIE ventures into all sorts of pop and rock areas with this terrific new record...the art is still up front in BOWIE's rock. A."
--Ed Symkus, BOSTON TAB, 6/17/02

"With Heathen, BOWIE has struck a neat balance between his wildly experimental inclinations and his ability to meld inviting melodies and thoughtful lyrics...assured and enjoyable...He's eager to forge ahead, but also happy to build on his rich musical past with songs that are well-crafted yet still full of unexpected twists and turns."
--George Varga, SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 6/13/02

"...BOWIE's lyrics are clever, full of dread of the future and longing for escape...On the covers, Neil Young's 'I've Been Waiting For You' and 'Cactus,' a song by '80s post-punk band the Pixies, the futuristic soundscapes compliment good, straightforward rock songs."
--Benjamin Nugent, TIME, 6/17/02

"...sonically adventurous tunes..."
--Elysa Gardner, USA TODAY, 6/11/02

"BOWIE, at 55, is plugged into the zeitgeist once again-and conveying it in his classic tuneful, inventive style. This time, however, he's not just expressing the dread, he's confronting its abstract source and demanding change.."
--Robert Cherry, CLEVELAND FREE TIMES, 6/12/02

"Those who dig slow-tempo BOWIE ballads will find this disc graceful, maybe even a masterpiece..."
--Dan Aquilante, NEW YORK POST, 6/14/02

"...a grand and haunted album..."
--Jeff Gordinier, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, 5/31/02

"BOWIE continues to look for new challenges, which sets him apart from many of his '60s peers."
--Greg Kot, CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 6/11/02

"...this respectable entry in the BOWIE canon scores with songs about love, fear, alienation, space travel and the minutiae of daily life, all examined by the Voice of a Thousand Faces that fans have come to love so well."
--Sarah Rodman, BOSTON HERALD, 6/17/02

" 'Slow Burn,' with its dollops of hot-oil guitar blasts from Pete Townshend, and 'Afraid,' with its orchestrated melodrama of fear and loathing, are modern elaborations rather than rehashes."
--Bill Dean, THE LEDGER (Lakeland, FL), 6/17/02

"...DAVID BOWIE has delivered one of his most consistent recordings in years.. Heathen is a free flowing blend of crisp originals like the harmony-filled pop flairs of 'Everyone Says Hi,' the heart tugging '5:15 The Angels Have Gone' and the sweet New York saga 'Slip Away.'"
--Kevin O'Hare, UNION NEWS (Springfield, MA), 6/9/02

"If anything, the music of DAVID BOWIE can be summed up in one word: dynamic.. For years BOWIE has dazzled his fans with his larger-than-life sound, which is present on his latest effort. Heathen represents DAVID BOWIE at his most quintessential."
--Jay Whiteside, DAILY CALIFORNIAN (Berkeley, CA), 6/14/02

"The wonder of the CD, and of the man's career, is that it all sounds precisely like BOWIE-cynical, searching, sonically imaginative and, in the end, hopelessly romantic."
--Tom Long, DETROIT NEWS, 6/16/02

"...Heathen is the best work he's created in at least a decade, if not longer, and could herald a new creative era for the living legend."
--Derek Simmonsen, WASHINGTON TIMES, 6/15/02

"...moody and melancholy...Warnings of blood, fear and fire appear against a disquieting backdrop of electronic effects and spacey keyboards, frequently with thrashing, grunge rhythm sections. Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl even crashes in with a heavy-metal guitar on one track."
--Kyle Smith, PEOPLE, 6/17/02

"...a lushly evocative CD...features some inspired writing about his fears and anxieties...The album also marks a vital reunion with Visconti...The new album is a welcome return to art-rock form for BOWIE...The new songs range from the mellow, impressionistic '5:15 The Angels Have Gone,' to the briskly rocking 'A Better Future.' And there are two stellar cover songs in Neil Young's edgy 'I've Been Waiting For You'...and an acoustic-rock treatment of the Pixies' 'Cactus'...But the more subtle brilliance of the album is illustrated by original songs such as the thoughtful 'Slip Away' and techno-spiced 'I Would Be Your Slave'..."
--Steve Morse, BOSTON GLOBE, 6/9/02

"...Heathen boasts some of BOWIE's best work since 1993's neglected Black Tie White Noise...What results is challenging and inviting, off-center but potent, and more inventive than most current indie-rockers could hope to be in their wildest dreams."
--George Varga, SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE, 6/9/02

"...come(s) up with his most haunting, honest record since Scary Monsters."
--Chris Nashwaty, FORTUNE, 6/10/02

"Reunited with producer Tony Visconti (Young Americans), David Bowie is back with Heathen, 12 surprisingly great songs that manage to brigde terrestrial rock'n'roll with sonic hijinks from some other galaxy."
--Chris Berend, ESQUIRE, July 2002

"...Bowie is still a zillion times more inventive, brave and rocket-to-Mars brilliant than anyone who's been prodded by the ubiquitous genius stick, like, ever. 55 and not out, Bowie remains rock's most worship-worthy oddity."
--Sarah Dempster, NME, June 2002

"Heathen proves that BOWIE's still got it. All of it. And in abundance."
--Kevin Maidment, AMAZON.COM, 6/17/02

"...the disc alternates between exuding a shimmering bleakness, as on the brooding opener 'Sunday,' and shooting out sonic sparks, exemplified by the wiry 'Slow Burn,' which features slashing guitar lines from Pete Townshend."
--David Sprague, BARNES AND NOBLE.COM, 6/17/02

"...BOWIE's finest hour since Scary Monsters..."
--Robert Wilonsky, DALLAS OBSERVER, 6/6/02

"...BOWIE returns with his first studio recording in three years and his best new record since 1980's Scary Monsters..."
--Joel Selvin, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE, 6/9/02

Reminder - Bowie On Totp2 Tonight

Everything will be alright tonight...

Don't forget David Bowie will be performing 'I Took a Trip on a Gemini Spaceship' on TOTP2 in just under a couple of hours. The show airs at 6.20pm UK time on BBC2. Above is a montage of shots from last night's wonderful performance of 'Fame' on the same show. Doesn't he look jolly good?!

We'll hopefully have some shots from last night's broadcast of the Conan O'Brien Show soon, on which David performed 'Slow Burn' and 'Cactus'. Meanwhile, go here for BowieNetter Simone's report on the MBs...Simone deserves some sort of endurance award for her Bowie dedication, I believe she's the last European in New York, and she will have timed her return just nicely for a European Air Traffic Controller's strike...ooops.

Congratulate David On Heathen Success Tonight @ Msn

Made for a real world...

David Bowie has entered the UK album chart at number five with his new album 'Heathen'. The spotters among us will remember that 'hours...' also entered the same chart at number five. Ironically, one of the albums above 'Heathen' in the chart is the triple CD by Queen, 'Greatest Hits I, II & III', which contains two versions of 'Under Pressure' both featuring Bowie vocals!

Whatever, it seems 'Heathen' is doing very well around Europe generally, with the number one spot in Denmark, and a number two placing in Norway. I know you'll all want to join me in congratulating David on the success of 'Heathen'. Here's a breakdown, in descending order of the positions so far, France, Germany and Japan tomorrow:

Denmark 1
Norway 2
UK 5
Ireland 6
Italy 6
Finland 11
Belgium 12
Holland 19

Anyway, some of you will get the chance to congratulate David personally this evening by joining him in an exclusive chat over at MSN Chat @ 7:00pm EDT. Click on the image above to take you there, and please say hallo from me as I'll be watching The Divine Comedy at Meltdown.

I have to admit though, It does look like this chat event is US only, as I haven't been able to find any trace of it at all, but I know the shortcut works in the US. Hopefully some tech head or other will post a way around this on the MBs...perhaps it's a disable cookies type thing or something like that...but what do I know...I am an artiste!

Please contact howardj@davidbowie.com if you were not let into the show, or were treated with disrespect.

Last Night's Legendary Meltdown Magic

The set list from last night. Does that look
like the handwriting of a crazy person to you?

And I thought about you...

While I'm waiting for some shots to come through from last night's A&R Live By Request show, I'll tell you a little of what I did to console myself, seeing as I couldn't be with those of you that did attend the recording. As I mentioned last week, I was expecting a night of craziness with a double bill of The Legendary Stardust Cowboy and Daniel Johnston for the second night of Meltdown. I wasn't disappointed.

A quarter of an hour after the official start time, there was no sign of The Ledge, and to be honest I was going to be surprised if he made it at all. In fact it was hard to imagine that he would even get to London! Anyway, the band came on, The Altamont Boys, and launched straight into a twanging rockabilly 'Ghost Riders In The Sky'...but still no sign of 'The Ledge'.

And then about two thirds of the way through 'Ghost Riders', there he was! He bounced onstage with a crazed smile and started dancing a maniacal whirling fling while spinning his blue and white chaps around his head. Then with no warning at all he was straight into 'Paralyzed', a song that surely must be the most insane recording ever committed to vinyl.

The overall sound is much tighter than that original version, this band is hot. But The Ledge himself doesn't disappoint, with a level of professionalism that has stayed with him since that first release back in '69. He even attempts that original bugle solo, but stops after one burst claiming "Wrong note", and continues as if anyone could have possibly known it was.

The Legendary Stardust Cowboy does not keep still if he is not singing. He'll either be dancing in the most bizarre manner you ever saw, (Ian Curtis of Joy Division and Freddie Garrity of Freddie and the Dreamers have nothing on this guy) or he'll be swinging something round his head, be it his ever-present pink towel, an item of clothing, the microphone, or his bugle! This keeps the band on their toes, and nervous throughout the performance. And with good reason, the bassist tells me later that he has lost his glasses before now due to a clunk aside the head, while The Ledge himself admitted pulling over a cymbal with his towel without even noticing.

The audience are highly appreciative and seem to know most of the set, which includes such "classics" as: 'I Walk A Hot Wind', 'Who's Knocking At My Door', 'Radar' and, of course, 'I Took A Trip On A Gemini Spaceship', along with new stuff such as 'Tokyo' which, by all accounts, will be on the next Ledge long player on Cracked Piston Records.

Due to his extra clothing and energetic stage performance, The Ledge tends to overheat onstage. He overcomes this problem in a way that seems natural enough I guess...he gradually strips off! As you can see from my series of pictures from last night's show, he goes pretty well all the way, except for his Y-fronts...such a tease. Believe me, there is no sight* quite like The Legendary Stardust Cowboy with his jeans around his ankles shuffling round the stage, hollering 'Paralyzed'! This second version of 'Paralyzed' was the last show of the set. And before we knew it he had shuffled right off stage back to his dressing room.

His dressing room is where I meet The Ledge and his band for a brief chat, I ask him how he feels about David Bowie covering 'I Took A Trip On A Gemini Spaceship':

"That's like a Super Collider...In fact, that's like a super, Super Collider."

Out of the blue somebody returns his pink towel from out front: "Oh my towel...I saw an owl on that towel once, it was a spotted owl." - "Really?" I naïvely reply - "Nope, I just made it up, but at least it rhymes!"

The Ledge is one of those people whose mind appears to be elsewhere at all times, but as the conversation lurches from subject to subject it is apparent that he is actually taking in what I'm saying, and responds with answers that threaten to fill up the remaining couple of hours of my DAT tape. But it's all very entertaining stuff, and if I ever get round to transcribing it, I'll post the whole thing here sometime.

I spend the rest of the night chatting with The Ledge, the band, and Tony who has been working on a documentary of The Ledge's life for the past two years. Tonight's show is about the last thing they need apart from a meeting with David which they are very hopeful will happen in August. I can't wait to see the completed film...and if you're reading this David, don't worry, I've been promised a video tape of tonight's show.

The Legendary Stardust Cowboy with The Altamont Boys.

On a final note, I'd like to say thanks again to Danny and The Ledge for the bugle! Yep, an actual bugle that belonged to The Legendary Stardust Cowboy himself...now where's my copy of 'Paralyzed', I'm going to learn that solo.

*Don't believe me? Mail me for a crummie if you need proof, but be warned, it's a big file.

Live Report From Today Show Soundcheck

"Hey Blammo you fool...wrong soundcheck...this shot is soooo last Tuesday!"
DB at the Roseland last Tuesday afternoon. Picture by Total Blam Blam.

It's happening outside, The music is outside, It's happening, now...

If you don't want to know what songs David will be performing this morning for his contribution to NBC's Today TV Show 7th Annual Summer Concert Series, (that we first mentioned six weeks ago (04/27/02 SNIPPET: BOWIE TO PLAY NBC's TODAY SUMMER CONCERT)) then look away now.

David's performance will begin at approximately 8:30am local time, and he'll be playing at least three, if not all four of the following: 'Slow Burn', 'Cactus', 'Fame' and 'Let's Dance'. Eye and ear-witness reports right now tell us that David has already soundchecked these songs this morning, and that he also performed most of 'Rock 'n' Roll Suicide' during that soundcheck after somebody shouted it out as a request!

Apparently there was much merriment during 'Slow Burn' when Earl Slick allegedly fluffed a guitar part, which amused David to the point of not being able to sing, due to the fact that he was laughing so hard. He wore a long black coat and shades for the rehearsal, and managed to get back inside before the heavens opened. Our reporters at the scene (Hallo Susans and Simone) are now soaked to the skin!

We'll bring you a full report tomorrow, if not sooner, and we'll reward the person whose picture we use for the piece with a highly collectable 'Heathen'/'Slow Burn' package, that comprises the following European items:

4-track 'Heathen' promo in card sleeve
One-track 'Slow Burn' radio edit promo
5-track 'Slow Burn' commercial release
3-track 'Slow Burn' commercial release in card sleeve

Please send your pictures to me at MrTotalBlamBlam@AOL.com as soon as you are able.

Bowie = "hedonist Visionary Magazine Editor!"

Hallo Mr. Ed...

David Bowie is the cover star and guest editor of the new issue of Mojo magazine, due in stores any day now. He pretty well outlines his involvement with the magazine in his Editor's Letter below:

"Being an editor for just one day is a lovely excuse to clean out the closet. I found all my old Legendary Stardust singles in there, all on Mercury, and that got me into a quiet reverie or two. Along with Wild Man Fischer and solo Syd Barrett, the Ledge was instrumental in creating, unwittingly, the now current Outsider Music genre. Mr. Stardust takes the title of Worlds Most Influential Cult Artist in my small world for maybe obvious reasons.

Loads of questions for me and Moby to answer, which have been attended to with alacrity and expediency, some taken seriously.

Yet more on that hoary old Berlin period from me assisted by Paul Du Noyer

What was the Most Classic of Classic Albums in my book? Erm, no cigar here but I give it my all just in case the weight of my devotion slipped through the cracks the first time round.

New artists may provoke interest in the back there, one of whom is at Meltdown, the other unfortunately couldn't make it."

I won't give too much away right now, lest I spoil the surprises, but below is just one picture from a four-page spread of Bowie pictures which are all annotated with completely hilarious captions written by David, as below.

"This dream was the basis for a magic-realist painting I started a couple of years ago, the subject of which portrayed a horde of clowns chasing me through the streets of New York intent on doing me in for trying to popularise aspects of 'mime'. 'Walking against the wind' apparently got them really hostile. It certainly isn't a still from an unreleased video of 'Pretty Things Have Gone To Hell'. Completely not!"

The Meltdown Festival Begins

The Meltdown festival got off to a very stylish start to a full house last night with the first performance in London in five years of Philip Glass' 'Low' and 'Heroes' symphonies. Performed by the brilliant London Sinfonietta and conducted by Marin Alsop, It really is a great way to hear these pieces from the music of David Bowie and Brian Eno. The sound was breathtakingly beautiful in what is one of the very best venues to hear this kind of music. I'm sure you know that the RFH was built for orchestral performances in the first place.

There is nothing scheduled on the South Bank for Meltdown tonight (though the incredible Arthur Lee is playing the Queen Elizabeth Hall), the programme continues with one of the more interesting events of the festival tomorrow night, Daniel Johnston and The Legendary Stardust Cowboy at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. See you there for what promises to be a night of absolute craziness!

Bowie Rocks Roseland

Highway Dandy Gail, Sailor and "Indie Kid", just before going
on stage at Roseland last night. All Pictures by Total Blam Blam.

New York's in love...

David Bowie took the Roseland Ballroom by storm last night with a show that left fans old and new completely stunned. As he had hinted in more than one interview, (even if nobody did believe him) 'Low' and 'Heathen' were performed in running order in their intirity.

This really was one of the very best David Bowie shows I've ever seen, and the fans that I talked to afterwards agreed, having nothing but praise for the brave, but highly compelling set that David chose. Here are a few pictures that I took at the show to tide you over, with a quick rundown of what happened. I'll post more pictures over the next few days...and a couple of wonderful crummies.

David bounced onstage in black waistcoat and trousers (very Thin White Duke) with black tie and white shirt, and started the show by explaining the reception RCA gave to 'Low' when he first presented it to them 25 years ago. "They offered me more money to go and do another 'Young Americans' and told me to forget all about this nasty album."...Thankfully David stuck to his guns and the influence of 'Low' on popular music over the last quarter of a century has proved him right.

"Hmmm...was it Neil's song or 'Afraid' next...I'll go with Neil."
A mildly confused David Bowie confuses the running order.

'Low' sounded astonishing, and it was so good to hear such a faithful interpretation that still somehow managed to give the musicians a chance to add something of their own. This was the first time I had seen Gerry in-the-flesh live (apart from Letterman) and he really is a brilliant addition to the band, as is Cat. It was also great to see David playing that monstrous bloody great big saxophone for the end of 'Subterraneans'.

After a 15-minute interval, David returned in the tweed "Gilbert and George" 'Heathen' clobber that he wore for TOTP. 'Heathen' was brilliantly received and I don't think I have ever heard such a noisily appreciative audience...it was also clear that David was having an absolute ball and enjoying every minute. Mention should also be made at this point of the excellent sound, and quite brilliant lighting...the BOWIE logo as a backdrop was genius.

After what seemed an eternity, (during which the enthusiasm for David's return didn't falter for a moment, with the chant of "Bowie, Bowie, Bowie..." growing louder by the minute) David and the band returned to end the show with a high-power encore of 'Hallo Spaceboy', Ashes To Ashes', 'Fashion' and 'I'm Afraid Of Americans'. David was dressed in a long red coat and that big baggy black trouser suit thing with a huge pair of platforms. Very tasty. If you were there you know how good it was, if you weren't...well.

Db On The Late Show Last Night

Eat your heart out Moby...David Bowie with a completely full head
of luxuriously thick hair, backstage at the Letterman taping yesterday.
Tyre print suit by Alexander McQueen, Picture by Total Blam Blam.

Twirling us round and round and upside down...

Those of you that were either present at the taping or watched the broadcast of the David Letterman show last night already know how hot David and the band are right now. Looking particularly good in a mid-nineties, Alexander McQueen 'Tyre Print' suit, David lead the band through a cracking version of 'Slow Burn', which, while it retains the elements of the studio version, does already have the stamp of the Bowie band all over it. Can't wait to see them in full flight tonight.

David gave a brief interview after the performance during which he explained one of the reasons for his involvement with the Area: 2 tour was to contribute in ways that Moby couldn't...namely hair! After Letterman flashed a vinyl version of the 'Heathen' album up he enquired if people really still bought vinyl these days, David replied that he wasn't a format man himself, and that he downloaded everything off the net!

Stay tuned for details of how to win tickets in the A&E LBR ticket give-away in the next couple of hours.

A&e Live By Request Ticket Give-away

DB contemplates his response to the wise guys who requested
'Little Bombardier' for LBR recently. Picture by Frank Ockenfels.

Singing old songs we loved... (and quite a few new ones too!)

Finally we have some good news on the A&E LBR ticket front (sounds like an extreme political organisation), in other words we have a quantity of tickets to give to BowieNetters for David's appearance on Saturday. I know many of you reading this right now are either seated in internet cafes, or hogging a friends machine or some such thing while you're in New York, so I'll keep it brief.

If you want to be in with a chance of winning a ticket to this very special event, then click on the image above to take you to the magic application box. Due to the limit we have on tickets, we can offer just one to each winning BowieNetter. Tickets will be drawn at random sometime on Thursday, and the winners will be notified at some point later that day.

If you aren't reading this until Wednesday because you were in line at Roseland, don't panic, if you enter now you stand the same chance as everybody who entered before you. Good luck, and please remember it's not fair to enter if you can't be at the show.

So, What Do You Think Of Heathen Now?

Made for a real world...

With the release of 'Heathen' in the US today, the album is now available worldwide. So we thought it would be interesting to run another poll similar to the snippets poll we ran last month (05/21/02 NEWS: SO, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF HEATHEN?). I know many of you are keen not to listen until after tonight's show as you'd rather hear the songs live first, so we will run the poll for the next week to give you the chance to have a good listen.

Don't forget to enter the region you live in, so we can get a flavour of how different tracks are perceived around the world. Please do take part in this poll, (click on the image above to take you to it) not least of all because David is always very interested to learn how YOU feel about the album. We'll be posting a round-up of all the recent reviews of 'Heathen' sometime this week, and we'll post the results of the poll a week from now too.

See ya all later... };-)

What To Do In New York Today

Mick Ronson enjoys a fag - Ziggy and Ronno's last stand during the
filming of the 1980 Floor Show at the Marquee club, London, 1973.

What to do, What to say, What to wear on a sunny day...

For those BowieNetters here in New York that didn't manage to get tickets for today's Letterman taping, here are a few ideas, short of getting wasted, to take your mind of it until you get to view the broadcast or a video at least.

Firstly, the David Bowie: Sound + Vision presentation at MTR is most definitely worth a visit. I traipsed along with a small clan of BowieNetters yesterday to catch Part 1 1964-1973, and I have to say it's an incredible show...and at only $6 admission it's also outstanding VFM!

There's not enough space here to give you the full breakdown of this 2-hour programme, but even if you have video of most of this stuff, you definitely haven't seen it all, and it's still worth seeing it on a big screen with a bunch of like-minded folk.

Judging by the audience reaction to much of what was shown yesterday, a large percentage of the full house was people watching for the first time. Part 1 of this retrospective runs until July 7th and you can contact MTR on (212) 621 6800 for screening details. I only wish I was here for the remaining five parts. :-(

Carlos Alomar with DB and TV during the recording of 'Everyone Says Hi'. You can
meet Carlos this very evening at Faces and Names. Picture courtesy of Tony Visconti.

Later today Carlos Alomar will be the special guest at a Meet and Greet at Faces and Names in New York. The start time is 6:00pm so those of you that want to camp out at Roseland can still do so, as Faces and Names is nearby at 161 W. 54th St. New York, NY (between 6th and 7th ave.)

Later still, at 10:00pm, Cinema Classics is hosting Stardust Memories which is a "Ziggy Stardust 30th anniversary retrospective including documentary footage, television appearances, outtakes, and much more!!" - Cinema Classics is situated at 332 E 11TH ST NEW YORK CITY and they can be contacted on (212) 677-1027.

So that's just a couple of things for those of you that aren't already camped outside Roseland...I should warn those of you that are already in line though, that Kelmar claimed her spot at the very front last night using some type of unsavoury spraying method, so even though she may not be physically there right now, she will be expecting her spot back whenever she chooses!
