The Scumfrog Vs Bowie - The Winners

The Scumfrog vs Bowie promotional only 12" vinyl.

Waiting so long, I've been waiting so, waiting so...

Last month we set a competition for BowieNetters to win five copies of the very collectable The Scumfrog vs Bowie version of 'Loving The Alien' promotional 12", and five copies of the regular CD. The question we asked was: "Who, with David Bowie, co-directed the original video for 'Loving The Alien'?" Well, at least 20 per cent of you thought the answer was Julien Temple and we even had one BNetter suggest it might be Quincy Jones...now that would have been interesting!

But, the answer we were looking for was the man who also had a hand in the videos for 'Boys Keep Swinging', 'DJ', 'Look Back In Anger', 'Wild Is The Wind', 'The Drowned Girl', 'Ashes To Ashes', 'Fashion', 'Let's Dance' 'China Girl', 'Dancing In The Streets', and 'Hallo Spaceboy'...not to mention David's appearances on The Kenny Everett Television Show and The Serious Moonlight tour video, and that's just off the top of my head!

Anway, that man was the very talented David Mallet. And here, a few days ahead of schedule, (...You can't beat a good old bit of Orwellian revisionism, Shivas!) are the folk selected by TRG?:

Bowiephiles

I keep a photograph

Interview : Aloha Magazine : June 2002

The June 2002 edition of Aloha magazine (Netherlands) includes a new interview with David. Although there is not a website available, if you follow the links to these message board posts from Regina, you can see some of the text translated, and some rather wonderful new photographs. 1 2

Interview : BBC Radio 4 : 06/07/02

If you missed David's BBC Radio 4 interview yesterday, you can listen to the version streaming online, here. Although the interviewer may not have been quite on the same wavelength as David, there were still some wonderful insights into the making of 'Heathen' and David as a person. Among many topics, David talked about the questions he has asked via his writing and said "by the time I do my last album, I'll only have one question." Don't miss this one.

Langley Kids Re-visited : This Is London : 05/30/02

For those of you wondering just how the Langley Schools Music Project (11/09/01 SNIPPET: BOWIEPHILES) is to be re-visited for Meltdown, there is an article online at This Is London, entitled 'Bowie arranges a class act'. They say :-

"Bowie's admiration has now led to his decision to recreate the project in London, using nine choirs from eight Lambeth schools, as part of his Meltdown festival at the Festival Hall next month. Rehearsals are well under way. As I enter the music room at Clapham's Bonneville primary school, 11-year-old Stephanie Davis is learning to play the space-age guitar part of the Bowie hit... Bowie's inclusion of the children's choirs... is testament to the enduring appeal of a project that Fenger never expected to be heard outside the schools involved - never mind across the world in another country's premier concert hall."

Lambeth schools recreate the Langley Project on June 21 in The Ballroom at the Festival Hall at 5.30pm (admission free).

Choose Songs For A&e Live By Request Now

...favourite melodies...

Voting for David Bowie's appearance on A&E's Live By Request next Saturday has begun. Click on the image above to take you to the LBR site, and then click on the 'make a request' button in the left-hand panel. I know David would appreciate requests for songs from 'Heathen' by BowieNetters, as the rest of the world will no doubt be voting for the more populist stuff.

We will announce information regarding the ticket situation for LBR in the next couple of days, so stay tuned to BowieNet news for your chance to get into this very special show.

Reminder - Bowie On Totp Tonight

Oh, these are the days...

As we mentioned a few days back, (06/03/02 NEWS: BOWIE WOWS FANS AT TOTP RECORDING) David Bowie will appear on tonight's edition of TOTP here in the UK, performing 'Slow Burn'. The show is broadcast at 19:30pm and it will be repeated at 02:25am on Sunday 9th June on BBC1. Details of the rest of the acts can be found here.

Needless to say, and as usual, BBC America will broadcast the same programme tomorrow at 19:00pm ET. And it looks like Australia will be getting the show next Friday the 14th too. It's unclear what of the remaining recorded material will be broadcast or when, though it's likely that most of it will be shown on TOTP2 in the near future.

I can tell you that there is no plan to broadcast 'Slow Burn' on a children's TV programme after all, despite suggestions elsewhere that it may be on The Saturday Show in the UK tomorrow morning (9.30am, BBC2)...though the show is worth watching for the latest instalment of Cubix alone! It seems the extra version of 'Slow Burn' was recorded as a generic version to be shown across Europe, and we'll obviously give you more details as we get them.

Ziggy Stardust Album 30 Today

I'd c'mon like a regular superstar...

I doubt there's anybody reading this that needs reminding of the fact that today is the 30th anniversary of the release of 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars'. The EMI reissue of the album as a 30th Anniversary Special Edition double CD (04/26/02 NEWS: ZIGGY, THE SECOND COMING) has now been put back to July 8th, and we will be celebrating the album proper nearer that release date.

Meanwhile, the above is a press ad for Ziggy that appeared in Melody Maker exactly thirty years ago this week. The legend reads:

Can a young guy who went through truly incredible "Changes" and made it all "Hunky Dory" ever find true happiness as a "Starman"?

The ad also features this excerpt from a May 27 1972 Cashbox review of the album:

"If they are still putting phonograph records in time capsules, then we would like to recommend the new Bowie for inclusion. David's latest full-scale invasion of the mind is the telling saga of a rock and roll star's treck through a garden of unearthly delights. The songs are uniformly brilliant and the production by Bowie and Ken Scott is virtually flawless. It's an electric age beauty. It's a cold hard beauty. It's another example of the shining genius of David Bowie. An album to take with you into the 1980's."

...and into the Nineties and the Noughties, and no doubt far beyond. There is also an announcement on the ad that: "On July 8th David Bowie appears at The Royal Festival Hall in aid of Friends of the Earth." I'm sure you all know about this date too, for it was the show that famously presented Lou Reed to Britain for the first time when he joined David on-stage for 'White Light/White Heat', 'Sweet Jane', and 'Waiting For The Man'...but that's another story.

You can read more reviews for 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' from around the globe at Mike Harvey's excellent Ziggy Stardust Companion. The site is in the process of being updated as we speak, but I'm sure it'll be worth the wait.

Happy Tenth Wedding Anniversary To David And Iman

Iman and David just three days ago on June 3rd
at the Council of Fashion Designers of America
Fashion Awards in New York. Pic: Brooke Williams.

Thousand years, you'll be mine...

Today is the 10th anniversary of the ceremony in which David and Iman renewed their vows at St James Episcopal Church, Florence, Italy. And as promised back in April (04/24/02 NEWS: HAPPY 10TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY IMAN AND DAVID!) when we celebrated the 10th anniversary of David and Iman's wedding in Lausanne, this is another excuse to show you those beautiful official wedding photographs that Susans has collected together on one handy page. Click on the image above to take you there.

I am reliably (hopefully) informed that the tenth wedding anniversary is traditionally marked with either tin or aluminium, and that the modern way is diamonds. Any guesses as to what the lovely couple may have got for each other?

While we're on the subject of diamonds, check out Iman's latest diary for May 2002 in which she talks about a trip to the Debeers mines in South Africa and the evening she got to wear The Millennium Star. Other entries in the diary include: CANNES DO, BLACK GIRLS RULE, STYLEWORKS and BAP...all will be revealed when you pop along to www.i-iman.com.

...and while we're on the subject of anniversaries...

Bowie On Front Cover Of Time Out

"There's nowt controversial about me..."

As the promotion for David Bowie's Meltdown steps up a gear, the current issue of Time Out (June 5-12) has David on the front cover and a most entertaining 3-page interview. We'll hopefully post the content of the interview next week, once the magazine is off the stands.

The RFH are also pushing Meltdown themselves in the latest events guide which has six-pages devoted to Meltdown, a two-page ad for the Bowie back-catalogue, and a full page ad on the back for 'Heathen'.

They are also distributing a series of postcards, such as the one above, that advertise individual nights of the Meltdown festival...why not collect the set, or like me, attend them all too!? };-)

Hot Link To The Hot List

(News tell me) make it alright...

Have you been wondering exactly which night TERRY EDWARDS & THE SCAPEGOATS are playing Meltdown, or perhaps you can't remember what day the Roseland after-show at the Hard Rock is on*? Or maybe there was some other burning issue that you know you read about on BowieNet, but can't quite recall when?

Well, now help is at hand with a new feature called The Hot List, that, as you've probably already guessed, lists all of the recent news items that are considered hot! You can find the link when you first sign-in on the same page as the 'What's New' box...it's one of those little blue links up in the top left hand corner. What could be easier than that?

If however you're trying to trace something that doesn't appear in The Hot List, you could do worse than visit Susans' comprehensive BowieNet News Archive, which has been updated to incorporate the months of April and May. We will also be finding a permanent home for this very handy service shortly. Good eh?

*If you really are wondering what night the Roseland after-show is on, then you are in need of serious help! };-)

The FREE TICKETS offer we announced yesterday is reality today, and it couldn't be simpler to apply. The rules are obvious, you must be a BowieNetter (you'll have to enter your user name to qualify) and you must be certain you can attend the show, it really isn't fair to claim tickets you have no intention of using.

You may apply only once for each date, duplicate applications will be disqualified. You will be prompted to enter your BowieNet username, your phone number, and an alternate email address. Roseland Meet And Greet Reminder!

That big black blob could be you...I don't mean it could be you individually, I mean all of
you collectively...well, not all of you, just the winners. And actually, it couldn't be you, as
this picture is from two years ago...unless exactly the same people win again of course...but
then David wouldn't look like that now would he? I didn't really think this one through did I?

Strangers when we meet...

The 'meet 'n greet' competition that we posted last week (05/30/02 NEWS: ANOTHER CHANCE TO MEET DAVID BOWIE AT ROSELAND!) will close at midnight (EST) this Friday.

Don't forget that this contest is only open to BowieNetters who have purchased tickets for the Members show on June 11th. If you haven't already entered, click on the image above for the chance for you and a guest to meet David Bowie at Roseland.

NB: You only need to enter your username in the form, but don't panic if you already included the @davidbowie bit too, it will work either way.

Two More Shows Confirmed...get Free Tickets!

The poster for the E-Werk concert in Cologne on July 12th.

Who praised their efforts to be free?

It is with much pleasure that we are finally able to confirm the David Bowie E-Werk concert in Cologne, Germany, on the 12th of July, and a show in Lucca in Italy on the 15th of July. I know many of you have felt a little frustrated over what seems a reluctance on our part to announce these concerts, but as ever, it has been for good reason.

That good reason is the fact that we have managed to procure 100 FREE tickets for BowieNetters for both of these shows! Details of how to obtain these free tickets will be announced before the end of the week. You lucky, lucky people.

Bowie Wows Fans At Totp Recording

Cat, DB, GAD and Slicky, slay 'em at the TOTP recording yesterday.

So inviting, so enticing...

You've all no doubt read various accounts of David Bowie's TOTP recording on the MBs. David and the band performed a handful of songs for the assembled BowieNetters and guests, and judging by your comments, a jolly special time was had by all. David chatted and joked between songs, and even invited fans to come and collect autographs at the end of the show.

The songs played were: 'Slow Burn', 'Cactus', 'I Took A Trip On A Gemini Spaceship', and 'Everyone says "Hi"'...all for Top of the Pops, and then after a quick costume change David returned with a few Bowie classics for TOTP 2, which were: 'Sound & Vision', 'Ashes to Ashes' and 'Fame', followed by an impromptu duet of 'Absolute Beginners' with Gail. The session was rounded off with another take of 'Slow Burn' for a BBC children's show.

DB during the TOTP 2 section of the show.

By all accounts, the first broadcast of any of this stuff is due on Friday's TOTP, but we'll get back to you with a final broadcast schedule shortly. Meanwhile, go check out an excellent journal from Dick Mac, that hasn't made its way on to the MBs, by clicking here. Thanks Dick, glad you finally...oh no, that would give away your punch-line! };-)

Bowie Performs America For Robin Hood Foundation

Bowie performs Paul Simon's 'America', at
The Concert For New York City last October.

Playing games with the faces...

David Bowie performed a version of 'America' at the request of The Robin Hood Foundation last week. Singing solo to a backing track, David wore a "very nice 1930's Burberry tweed suit, very Gilbert and George."

The event took place last Thursday evening, May 30th, at The Javits Center in Manhattan. Eye witness reports described David's performance as "breathtaking and highly emotional" and apparently the crowd "absolutely adored him". I asked David about his appearance, and this is what he had to say:

"I was asked to do 'America' before their auction started. (Auctioneer was Mike Myers.) The evening was opened by Billy Crystal. MC for the evening was Diane Sawyer. I went over straight after my own rehearsals and did the song for them, then went home for dinner.

They raised ...wait for it...$14,000,000 in one night. (Yes, million) One of the auction prizes was for 'Britney to come over to your child's sleepover party'. Well, then!!To say there were some heavy hitters there would be an understatement.

It's an amazing charity. It is run and paid for by the wealthy of New York therefore there are NO expenses whatsoever, every single penny made goes to charity. They are the biggest funder of schools in New York's poorest neighborhoods. They've also made it possible for, so far, over 700,000 uninsured kids to get access to health care. Since 1988, they've raised literally millions and millions of dollars and started more programs than I can remember."

You will remember that David performed this same Paul Simon song at The Concert For New York City back in October last year. Along with 'Heroes', the track ended up on the commercial release of the concert. We will hopefully have some pictures from Thursday's performance for you shortly.
