More Rex Ray In 13th Bowienet Auction

Rex Ray design, signed by David Bowie and Rex Ray.

Well, ain't that poster love?

With just one day left to run on the real 12th BowieNet auction (snigger...) we are posting but one item this week. It's another Rex Ray design that you are all aware of, and it comes in the shape of the BowieNet Roseland poster from June 19th 2000. This isn't just any old copy though, it's an untrimmed, 18" x 13", printers proof, and what's more, it's printed in slightly different colours to the final poster.

As if that wasn't enough to make it ridiculously desirable, it's also been signed by David Bowie and Rex Ray! And, just like the posters available on the night, it's printed on high quality card, not your usual run-of-the-mill bog paper that some lesser designers may have chosen. Anyway, it should be up shortly, and you can have a bid by clicking on the image above.

Tibet House Benefit Members Pages Updated

Yes he was alright, the song went on forever...

A relieved SusanS has finally finished reliving the events of February 22nd (for now), by revamping, remodelling and re-posting the Tibet House Benefit Concert 2002 member's pages. Each of the pages have been improved and added to, and here are a few more quotes from some of the new submissions:

The new song was absolutely lovely...destined to become a favorite like "Wild Is The Wind - Carmen

Finally... the moment I had been waiting for: My first Bowie experience! It was fantastic... - James Franco

I think I finally understood why it is that people are always talking about the look of the man. I think now it is because the look and the art are one and the same. This is a man who lives what he does. - Kelmar

"I Would Be Your Slave"!! You could feel his intense expressions and love for singing that song. He sang like the true performer he is and gave it his all. I felt so proud at that moment to be a fan. - LaLaLinda

There is something different about this song. Something vulnerable. Its core is its honesty and it is defiant. 'I Would Be Your Slave'. - Lindsay

Only after the words "Ground control to Major Tom" did I realize that not only was he playing one of his greatest songs, but one of the greatest songs in the history of modern music. - Nnmaddox

The new song was achingly beautiful with a soft, 60's ish sound, although the voice lulled us along and then thrilled us suddenly with a maestro's touch on the emphasised lines. - Spaceface

He was groomed for the show, beautifully made up, wearing THE most amazing sculptured coat?.and he was approaching......! - SusanS

I really really enjoyed the show A LOT! And I cannot wait till next year! - Ziggy 1986

Each person has their own pop-up page now, including a picture of themselves where they dare supply one! So it's great to see that Cavebat isn't actually a furry little winged mammal that prefers the comfort of the dark after all, and it's also pleasing to note that Paul Martin lives in the middle of a Star Trek type space-time continuum...re-enforcing the belief that there is always somebody worse off than oneself!

Anyway, I digress, suffice to say you can go take a look at the new pictures and words and stuff, by clicking on the image above. Well done to all who have contributed to this project and made it the wonderful thing it is.

In the funhouse, we'll show you, really good time

Funhouse : Infrared Lounge : Fridays

Every Friday is Funhouse night, at the Infrared Lounge, 210 Rivington Street, NYC. From 7.00pm to 4.00am (no cover charge), local bands, dj's, photographers and painters are showcased, "all in the spirit of the late 60's early 70's Warhol/Bowie/Velvet Underground scene." Go and enjoy the entertainment, or email mediciapp@AOL.COM to get involved.

BowieArt : The Scotsman : 03/29/02

BowieArt's patronage of students and graduates from Glascow School of Art was the subject of a lengthy lead article in The Scotsman last week. Well worth a read, it includes this from Professor Seona Reid, director of the school. "It's great that he puts his support behind young visual artists. He obviously hasn't forgotten how difficult it is when artists are just starting out."

Pin-up : The Guardian : 03/28/02

"Pin-up: Glamour and Celebrity Since the Sixties", a new exhibition running from 26th March 2002 until 19th January 2003 at Tate Liverpool, and described as charting the changing face of glamour and celebrity from Pop art to the present, includes a photograph of David taken by Linda McCartney.

Lyricist : San Francisco Chronicle : 03/08/02

San Francisco performer Jill Tracy won the top prize of $2,500 in a recent songwriting contest. She is quoted as saying: "literate lyrics are rare -- and scorned by major record labels -- in today's fast-food pop music market. "What's wrong with making a person think?" Tracy says. "I was inspired by songs growing up -- by Bowie, the Police -- that made me pull down the dictionary and look up a word. I loved that -- it really intrigued me about music."" (bonster)

DAVID BOWIE REVEALS 'HEATHEN'

Hot on the heels of the news that his label, ISO Records, has inked a multi album deal with Columbia, David Bowie has announced track details for his forthcoming album 'HEATHEN' due for release June 10th.

The new album, which sees Bowie re-uniting with producer Tony Visconti for the first time in 20 years, also sees the appearance of a couple of very special guests.

WHO legend Pete Townshend and Foo Fighter Dave Grohl have both added guitar parts to the record.

Townshend, whom last appeared on a David Bowie record back in 1980 (on the 'Scary Monsters And Super Creeps' album track 'Because You're Young') adds an incendiary lead guitar line to a track entitled 'SLOW BURN', which is tipped to be the lead off track from the album in the US. Bowie calls it "the most eccentric and aggressive guitar I've heard Pete play, quite unlike anything else he's done recently." 'SLOW BURN' also features a performance from The Borneo Horns who accompanied Bowie on the 'Serious Moonlight' tour.

Other tracks that are expected to make the album include the sublime 'I WOULD BE YOUR SLAVE' which Bowie recently performed in New York at the Tibet House benefit show at Carnegie Hall, the uptempo 'AFRAID' which has become a firm fan favourite after an exclusive Bowienet (www.davidbowie.com) webcast, 'MARCHING', 'WOOD JACKSON' and '5.15 THE ANGELS HAVE GONE'.

The tracks for the album have all been mixed by Tony Visconti, however, the album opener, the ethereal 'SUNDAY' has also been remixed by Bowie buddy MOBY, the French electronica duo 'AIR' have supplied a remix of the album track 'A BETTER FUTURE'. The release details of these two specials will be announced shortly.

The album is rounded out with the title track 'HEATHEN', the epic 'SLIP AWAY' and 'EVERYONE SAYS HI', a beautifully summery tune with a classic Tony Visconti string arrangement.

All songs were written and recorded during July and August of last year.

'HEATHEN' will be released on ISO Records via Columbia on June 10th. More details about the album, it?s packaging and Bowie's live plans for the rest of the year will become available shortly.

12th Bowienet Auction Live, No Really, It Is!

Rex Ray design, Bowie signature...Yes please!

Now don't be fooled by fools who promise you, The world and all that glitters more fool you...

OK, I'm sorry...surely you expected nothing less from such a worm as myself. I apologise particularly to those who had already sold cars, houses, pets and partners to stump up enough cash before they realised that yesterday's news was an April Fool's bit of naughtiness. Check out the MBs for a few tales of hilarious woe!

Anyway, you shouldn't be too disappointed, as the real 12th BowieNet auction should be live about now, with two equally desirable items (almost). The above is a very rare signed artist's proof of a brilliant Rex Ray design familiar to pretty well all of you by now, and this week's second item is a Tibet House Benefit T-shirt from last year's show. Good luck!

Bowie Sells Stage Outfit In 12th Bowienet Auction!

Nope, they ain't Easter Bunnies, it's the "Woodland Creature" costume!

I could do with the money...

As auction number eleven draws to a close, it is completely eclipsed by the latest item that David Bowie has selected from his own vaults. In an incredible move David has decided to "let go" many of his original items of stage clothing, some dating back over thirty years. The first piece is one of his very favourite items, and also one of the few outfits that was worn throughout the '72 and '73 tours...The "Woodland Creature" costume!

This costume was first worn at the Rainbow shows in London of August 1972, and, though a duplicate was later produced, this is the original outfit. Beautifully crafted from leather, the design is hand-painted, and a closer inspection reveals a little wear and tear, which is presumably why the duplicate was made in the first place. You can see close-ups on the eBay page, including more live shots of Ziggy modelling the thing, like the picture above from 1973.

Believe me, I did try to dissuade David from parting with this stuff, (there's a lot more to come) not only because I can't possibly afford anything like this right now, but also because it seems a shame to split the collection up. Anyway, he seems determined, and seeing as this is his favourite item, I guess he is serious.

There is quite a high reserve on this most beautiful piece of rock history, and I for one hope it isn't met. If however you think it should be yours, then click on the link below...I hope you're unsuccessful!

Leather hand-painted "Woodland Creature" costume made by Kansai Yamamoto and worn by David Bowie!

This Month's Db Pic In Q

Good time love...

This month's gratuitous use of a David Bowie picture in Q magazine, is a splendid little shot from 1996 taken with The Pet Shop Boys backstage at Top Of The Pops, when they performed 'Hallo Spaceboy' together. The picture is used in the regular Q feature, Cash for Questions, and as far as I can tell the only reason to have used it was to illustrate a question from an Eduard Meyer who asked whose ego out of Bowie's, Liza's, Dusty's, Tina's and Kylie's was the most "challenging" to work with.

Neil explained, rather diplomatically, that "they were all incredibly nice and co-operative", while singling out Dusty's perfectionism as the thing that probably made her the hardest to work with. So, no real mention of David, but enough of one to get that regular Bowie shot in. You may think that the fact I haven't mentioned the monthly Bowie Q pic recently is an indication that there hasn't been one, think on...

Last month's issue (March) had a picture of the Ziggy Stardust sleeve to illustrate a piece by the brilliant Ricky Gervais (The Office, XFM etc.) in which he chose his five favourite albums, and the February edition had a Tibet 2001 shot to illustrate a piece about Bowie Bonds, not to mention the four self-portraits that we mentioned at the time. (02/19/02 NEWS: WIN MATTHEW COLLINGS' ART CRAZY NATION) One of these days I'll sit down and work out how far back this unbroken chain stretches, unless somebody out there....

Just one living chance

Starman : TOTP2 (UK) : 04/02/02

The UK TV show, Top of the Pops 2, celebrates its 250th show next week, with 20 all time favourite performances as voted for on the TOTP website by viewers of the programme. The show will include, in 12th place, that historic rendition of Starman, cited (and often quoted in our BowieNet news pages) as a life-changing moment by a large number of famous artists and music fans alike. Showing on BBC2 in the UK on Tuesday 2nd April, at 7.05PM, and also on various BBC digital channels as listed in our calendar.

Lyricist : New York Times : 03/10/02

Billy Joel was interviewed in the New York Times recently, and had this to say about lyric writing:-

"I always wanted to be a better lyric writer than I was. I wanted to write surrealistic lyrics like David Bowie or abstract lyrics like Dylan or philosophical lyrics like Leonard Cohen. Lyrics that weren't so bloody literal."

Thin White Duke : Guardian : 03/24/02

In a Guardian profile of Lenny Kravitz, we are given a brief glimpse of his early inspirations:-

"Kravitz's musical career began in the mid-Eighties when he left home and lived in a Ford Escort, hired for $5 a day. Inspired by Bowie and the New Romantics, he called himself Romeo Blue, dyed his hair and wore blue contact lenses. 'I wasn't the thin white duke,' he once said. 'I was the thin brown duke.'"

Starman : 'Ted and Alice' : 04/04/02

A new romantic comedy series starts on BBC1 in the UK on Thursday 4th April at 9.00PM and the trailer, currently airing, uses Starman as theme music. "Ted is an alien, an outcast on his own planet where he is a rare single-sex being condemned to a life in search of a mate. Alice's life seems set to change when Ted, who is not only looking for love but also a place to hide his spaceship, appears on her doorstep." ( blammo)

Space Oddity : NME : 03/27/02

Space Oddity, from The Langley Schools Music Project (11/09/01 SNIPPET: BOWIEPHILES), makes the Top Ten list of NME Stereo "Turn Ons" this week. The album 'Innocence And Despair', from which the track is taken, is released in the UK on Basta, on April 29th. There is also a story about this album, from the Telegraph, here.

Bowie In Steve Strange Autobiography

This club's called The Blitz, it's this month's pick...

Ex-Visage singer and club entrepreneur, Steve Strange, has a newly published autobiography. 'Blitzed!' is the latest in a line of books by Eighties pop icons who have acknowledged the influence of David Bowie upon their careers. Off the top of my head, previous biographies with a similar message include those by or about, Boy George, Holly Johnson, Marc Almond, Joe Jackson, Gary Numan and Billy Mackenzie. I'm sure to have forgotten a few, but even this short list is some indication of just how David Bowie helped shape the sights and sounds of that very fertile late Seventies/early Eighties period.

Steve has a lot of good stuff to say about DB, including how his walls were covered with posters of the man who inspired the haircut that got Steve thrown out of school. He also talks of the birth of the New Romantic movement from it's humble beginnings as a regular Bowie Night in a 250-capacity club in 1978, (where more people were turned away every week than actually managed to squeeze in) to the infamous Blitz club, which David visited one night in search of extras for his 'Ashes to Ashes' video. Here's a small excerpt from Steve's memory of that evening:

"Word soon spread like wildfire that David Bowie was there. He was probably the reason most people at the club had got into pop music in the first place. Travel back to the childhood bedroom of most Blitz habitués and you'll find a David Bowie poster on the wall. He had changed his look and his sound so many times, there were more than enough images to go round. The alien from Low and The Man Who Fell To earth. Aladdin Sane. Diamond Dogs. Ziggy Stardust.

"Hello Steve, David Bowie here...would you like to be in
my new video...you'll have to get your own clobber together.
I've already got my outfit sorted, it's a bit Joseph Grimaldi!"

He was the one person that everyone there would cite as an influence, even more important than punk. Everyone wanted to go upstairs and see him. We had to have extra security to keep people back. He said it was a great scene and asked me if I would like to appear in the video for his next single, Ashes to Ashes."

You can watch a small snippet of Steve talking about the 'Ashes to Ashes' video on HTV Wales by clicking on the book cover above. 'Blitzed!' The Autobiography of Steve Strange is out now on Orion.
