Best Disembodied Head (!) : Baltimore Citypaper : 09/19/01 Among the categories for Best of Baltimore 2001, as listed in the online version of the Baltimore Citypaper, is 'Best Disembodied Head'. The title is awarded to David Bowie. They say: "Staring out from the vacant storefront is what the locals have taken to calling the "David Bowie head," for its remarkable resemblance to the singer in his glam-rock days. It's as if Bowie stepped off the cover of Pin Ups and was instantly decapitated, leaving only his orange hair, pursed lips, and steely eyes intact. No one knows where this sassy specter came from, or why it graces Chestnut Avenue. A totemic tribute to that long-gone era of free love and androgyny? A hairdresser's relic from a time when the Day-Glo mullet was an acceptable look? Or is someone just trying to creep us out?" (regina)
Compilation tape for db : Play UK (TV) : 03/09/02 David is the subject of this week's For Your Ears Only, a new TV show, exclusive to Play UK (Channel 217: Sky Digital). Each week, a celebrity guest makes a compilation tape for someone they care about. This week, Radio 1 DJ, Emma B compiles a tape for David Bowie. The show goes out at 7.30PM, Saturday 9th March.
Ashes To Ashes : Sunday Times : 03/03/02 Travis had a double page spread in last week's Sunday Times sub-titled "for Travis, it?s all about the songs". The interview opened with this paragraph, in which the whole band agree that Ashes To Ashes is a top 'tune'. "We?re sitting in the back room of the Dublin Castle, one of London?s more intimate music venues. From the bar next door, a distinctive riff emerges. ?Tune,? says Neil Primrose, Travis?s drummer. ?Tune,? concurs Andy Dunlop, the band?s guitarist, as he recognises the opening bars of Bowie?s Ashes to Ashes. ?Aye, tune,? concur the singer, Fran Healy, and the bassist, Dougie Payne. And, with unanimity reached, the interview can continue.
Theatre and Rock'n'Roll : The Times : 02/02/02 The actor, Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill, Kevin and Perry Go Large), was the subject of this week's 'My Cultural Life' section in The Times. When asked about his taste in music, he divulges he was the original lead singer of Super Furry Animals. He adds: "Age-wise, I saw the arse-end of punk. I loved the Sex Pistols but I also love the Rolling Stones and David Bowie. If anybody has married theatre with rock?n?roll, it is Bowie."
Ziggy Stardust : MTV.com : Tuesday's 10.30PM ET Ozzy Osbourne's family are the subject of an MTV "reality-based comedy" following their lives. To accompany the show, there is an online interview with Ozzy which includes a question about his listening habits. His reply includes this: "To be perfectly honest with you, I should listen to more, but there's nothing really that grabs me, you know? I like the older stuff [from] when I was younger like [Led] Zeppelin, the Beatles, McCartney, [John] Lennon albums. Early [David] Bowie albums like Ziggy Stardust."
