Bowie At The Beeb... And On Dotmusic

DAVID BOWIE releases a triple-CD collection of unreleased recordings next week and dotmusic been asked to host an exclusive micro-site to mark the occasion.

Dotmusic, in association with EMI and the BBC, will launch the site on Monday, the same day as the release of 'Bowie At The Beeb'.

The collection, recorded between 1968 and 1972, includes tracks chosen personally by Bowie, the majority of which have been taken from the albums 'Space Oddity', 'Ziggy Stardust', 'The Man Who Sold The World' and 'Hunky Dory'.

Other than stable Bowie acts of genius such as 'Rock 'n' Roll Suicide', 'Changes', 'Ziggy Stardust' and 'Five Years', there are non-album tracks and covers, including The Velvet Underground's 'Waiting For The Man'.

The collection also includes his first-ever live performance with guitarist Mick Ronson and his 1968 session with the Tony Visconti trio. Artwork for the album is by Guy Peellaert, responsible for the design of the seminal 'Diamond Dogs' album. The third CD included with the compilation captures Bowie's performance at the BBC Radio Theatre in June earlier this year.

Dotmusic will also be giving away a host of exclusive prizes as part of the micro-site, which includes sound samples, a gallery, screensavers and the full lowdown on 'Bowie At The Beeb'. The prizes include a signed print of the cover art, albums, t-shirts, posters and subscriptions to www.davidbowie.com.

Return to dotmusic.com for the micro-site on Monday.

Beeb Broadcast Reminder

Not that you need one, but on Sunday night those of you in the UK can watch the long-awaited broadcast of David Bowie's appearance at the BBC Radio Theatre back in June (no fair)! The show will be on BBC2 at 10:00pm (GMT) and will be followed by a screening of the classic Cracked Actor documentary.

Of course after seeing how incredible the performance was (if you haven't already), you can rush out the next day and pick up the CD (the limited edition 3rd disc, that is)!

Blammo Talks With Kevin Cann About Bowie At The Beeb

To celebrate Monday's release of Bowie at the Beeb, here follows the transcript of a brief chat I had with Kevin Cann about the production of the Bowie at the Beeb sessions CD. Kevin's pedigree is a fine one, from his one man Bowie exhibition in Watford way back when, via the unequalled achievements of the best Bowie fan magazine to this day, Starzone... Kevin was also the author of the excellent David Bowie: A Chronology in 1983, and he has played an important role in the vast EMI re-issue campaign of the last couple of years. Which brings us neatly to the present and his work on Bowie at the Beeb, as art director and researcher for the project. Go here for some insider information on how the project became what it is.

Artful Lodger!

Lots of inquiries on David's art this week. Probably because of the news of his revamped Bowieart.com which goes live next week sometime. Just to keep some of you happy, we will begin to post postcard size pics of some of David's work, just for your downloading pleasure. Perfect printout would be on Epson 4" x 6" glossy photo paper, a nice substantial format that has perforated edges that can be removed, leaving a rather smart postcard size print. We have four pics for you today. iman1, iman2, old master and a self-portrait from the 90s.

Britain, Bowie At The Beeb Bonkers

The air of anticipation is palpable, whatever that means. The Main Man himself live on the telephone courtesy of Mark 'n' Lard and Radio One tomorrow. The TV broadcast of Bowie at the BBC Radio Theatre followed by Cracked Actor on BBC2 on Sunday evening, and the long-awaited Bowie at the Beeb 3CD set available from Monday morning. The full page ads are coming thick and fast (NME above, UNCUT below) with more to come. There are also nation-wide in-store promotions and some competitions for Bowie at the Beeb at UK chains such as MVC, WOOLWORTHS and Virgin.

I will also be posting a short interview with Kevin Cann tomorrow. Long-term Bowie fans will know the name, but a lack of space unfortunately prevents me from posting his impressive Bowie-related CV. Kevin has been working closely on Bowie at the Beeb, (with EMI project co-ordinater Nigel Reeve) as art director and researcher for the project. As if all this wasn't enough we will be running a competition next week to win Bowie at the Beeb goodies such as Promotional T-shirts, posters and the CDs themselves. Phew!

Last Chance To Win New York Telephone Conversation

(...and signed Bowie at the Beeb print, and Bowie at the Beeb 3CD set, and your very own fifteen minutes of fame, well actually, probably nearer three minutes, but beggars can't be choosers!)

Only a matter of hours before your chance to talk to the three gentlemen above, AND your chance to win a signed version of the print below expires. I'm sure there's no one reading this that hasn't already entered the fabulous Bowie/Shitehorses competition, but if you don't have a clue what I'm talking about, then just take a look at yesterday's news, or even the previous day's news.

In their usual professional manner, Mark 'n' Lard have informed me that the competition "ends somewhere in the middle of the night", that night being the one belonging to Wednesday the 20th of September of course. Can't say fairer than that!

Bowieart Website Needs You!

That's right - the new version of the BowieArt Website is set to launch inthe very new future. The new version differs from the currentsite in the fact that it now features graduating students from London's RoyalCollege of Art, allof whom have been given free pages on the site. It also includes the artistsrun initiative Assembly (Goldsmith's and RCA graduates), which brings the total number of featured artists on BowieArt up to about 150 - and of course the site also features some never before seen art from David as well!

However, before the site launches early next week, we need some sharpBowieNetters to give it a test drive! We are looking for a few web savvyindividuals to spend a little time on the site and give us your feedback. If you are interested in helping out, please send an e-mail to saintalphonzo@davidbowie.com with bowieart testdrive in the subject line.Look for a reply which will include all the relevant information. Please respond today by 7PM EST if you'd like to help out - we are looking forabout 30-40 volunteers.

'lil Alex Photos Circulate

That's right, and it seems as though People Magazine in the U.S. has been the latest publication to include these gems. Hello reportedly has more photos of Alexandria than most of these other mags, but at least folks in the U.S. can see these pix now in hardcopy without begging friends overseas to mail them Hello! =8-) Thanks, Bsctrumpet!

The Shirehorses? Who Tf?

I'm sure you are all well aware of the Radio 1 competition announced by off-beat DJs Mark 'n' Lard yesterday, in which the bizarre duo asked for the following sentence to be completed in no more than fifteen words: "David Bowie could do a lot worse than support the Shirehorses on their forthcoming UK tour because..."

Well one or two of you in the US of A have highlighted your ignorance of the popular combo's work. The competition doesn't close until late tomorrow night, so you still have a chance to swot up on the work of these brave but mildly insane visitors to the European album charts. You can commence your research here.

When you are happy that your findings have inspired you sufficiently to pen the winning answer, send your fifteen words or less to mark.radcliffe@bbc.co.uk ...Remember the prize is a print of the Bowie at the Beeb cover signed by both David Bowie and Guy Peellaert, and the outright winner will get the chance to speak with DB on the telephone this coming Friday. There are two or three runner up prizes of the 3CD set.

You can listen to the show online by going here ...Answers can also be faxed or snail-mailed. Good luck!
