Sonicnet Feature Bowie The Innovator

SonicNet are running a feature centring on the cyber innovations that David has been at the head of over the last couple of years.

From the 50th birthday performance broadcast over the Internet to the present day, SonicNet reports that Bowie is still looking for new ways to combine technology and music.

While you are there check out the ARTISTS INFO panel that includes a biography, a discography, audio clips and, by far the silliest, a 'similar artists' section which lists just one band. The name of that band, who I have to admit are very similar to Bowie, is...wait for it...Tin Machine!!! Future entries could include Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars, The Lower Third and The Mannish Boys among others.

Click on the logo above to take you right there.

Bowie Does Beatnik

That's right. Beatnik unveiled this ad in yesterdays Billboard to announce a new partnership with BowieNet.

As you know from the past, BowieNet and Beatnik presented the world premiere of the Beatnik Player 2.0 with the launch of the Fame ReMix project.

In the coming weeks, keep your eyes out for yet another project with Beatnik, including the complete "sonification" of the new BowieNet v2.

Chris Haskett (formally of the Rollins Band) is working together with BowieNet, putting a web-score together for the soon to be launched site (expected in May, 2000).

Until then, keep your eyes open for the next project from Beatnik and BowieNet.

State Of Dis-union

Boston Globe's Boston.com ran an article that basically outlined the current state of the music industry, and weighed the effects of cutting-edge software products like the infamous Napster, BowieNet was mentioned as an example of a site that has taken advantage of all of the benefits that the new technology offers.

"The music industry is trying to protect its turf and curtail progress; at the same time, artists deserve to be paid. 'If the recording industry wins, we lose the huge social advantages,' says Harvard Law School professor William Fisher. 'But if the recording industry loses, artists' rights are eroded.'"

"...artists would release their music files online in an unprotected format, offering certain services (such as advance concert tickets) to honest fans who pay as they play. David Bowie has mastered the concept at www.davidbowie.com, which offers users everything from Internet service to CDs (as in compact disc and certificates of deposit)."

Golden Years Pt 3

PART 3 : GOLDEN YEARS - THE DAVID BOWIE STORY

This final instalment had some great sound bites, particularly from Nile Rodgers on 'Let's Dance', and Bob Geldof on David's pivotal role in 'Live Aid'. Once again, fulsome praise was given to David's talents from a wide variety of famous friends and colleagues.

The end of the programme seemed to me not to say enough on the innovation, excitement, and new, younger following generated by David's later work, notably 'Earthling' and '1. Outside'.

His interest in the Internet was mentioned, but only in passing. I was expecting to hear something about his foresight and inspiration in creating the first fully interactive official fan site and ISP. We will hear more about this, no doubt, when the rest of the world has cottoned on! And of course, the chatters were hoping to be name checked, one by one (wink). Hehe....next time guys.

In general, this programme has been a great listen. It was fascinating to hear David's very recent comments on his whole career. May I just add that the job of transcribing this for you has been a lot of fun, not least for the challenge it posed to my spelling abilities! (Rachmaninov, Blavatski et al)

For a Bowie fan, this series was a 'must'. For more quotes and images from part 3 (no deliberate mistakes this week! Blam, please heave a sigh of relief, - unless you know different?) click here. If you haven't already seen them, click here for part 1 and here for part 2.

"I mean its no secret, you know, my feelings about David artistically. I consider him the 'Picasso' of music and I really mean that sincerely." - Nile Rodgers

"After people like Lennon and Dylan, I think David Bowie brought a very modernistic intelligence and the necessity for change. I think he was completely positive, certainly through one and a half decades of completely overriding influence, in the best of popular music, and I take my bloody hat off to him!" - Roger Taylor

"Its a compulsive need to wreck everything (laughs). You might notice thereÍs a pattern of stripping down and building back up again throughout my life. But I guess thatÍs how some of us conduct our lives." - David Bowie

thanks again spaceface!

Generation @

DB's old Berlin apartment is being put to good use as headquarters for an internet-related research project:

"Generation@, a project to research and examine the impact of the Internet on society has secured Bowie's old Berlin apartment for a troop of 20-somethings according to this Berlin Kurier news article. The six strong group spend their days in the luxury seven room 200 square meter apartment where Bowie lived while writing and recording during his Berlin/Eno era in 1978-79. One group member says "Bowie's spirit inspires us; only his music is missing". More information about the project including how to contact the participants can be found at the Connexion 2000 web site."

Really Randoms

RollingStone.com covered the Bowie/Hanson story in the Really Randoms portion of their News section. And here is what they said:

David Bowie may not be touring this year, but that doesn't mean he's sitting around knitting booties as he and Iman wait for the stork. The Thin White Web Entrepreneur has just added teen sensations Hanson to his list of web clients, which includes the New York Yankees (YankeesXtreme.com) and Baltimore Orioles (OriolesWorld.com). Bowie's UltraStar Internet Services has been working on a site to bring a new and improved Hanson to the unsuspecting world in anticipation of their new album, This Time Around, due May 9. At midnight on March 29, Hanson.net will go live, giving fans a peak at the new album which features guest appearances from Beck, John Popper and Jonny Lang.

Station To Station

Eric Pfeiffer runs a DB dedicated radio show called, appropriately enough, 'Station to Station', which airs each Tuesday evening from 7pm to 8pm Pacific Standard Time. Click on the image above for the real audio connection to the radio program (remember to tune in during showtime, 7-8pm PST). 'Station to Station' has been on-air on KWVA 88.1FM since July 1999. The program is aired from the University of Oregon, in Eugene, Oregon, and it features rare, live, and unreleased material by Bowie, as well as some popular favorites. Eric takes reqeusts, answers questions, and has trivia for the weekly listeners. Over the past eight months the show has become quite popular in the Eugene area, and the new season premiers this Tuesday! It should be a good one! Again, the radio show is now also available to those outside the Eugene area via a real audio link at:

http://gladstone.uoregon.edu/~kwva

For on-air requests, the telephone number is (541) 346-0645.

thanks to Eric Pfeiffer (Host, "Station to Station")

The Return Of Duke 'n' Earl

Earl Slick yesterday

Well this news is best broken by our man in New York, who, for matters of security, shall remain happily pseudonymed; 'The Spy-In-The- Flight-Case'! Take it away Spy:

"Earl Slick flew into NY on Thursday night to take part on Friday in an initial rehearsal for the Glastonbury/NY Festival shows. Wearing his key-note black on black and shades, the 'Hard-Man of Rock' ensemble, he tore through 'Stay' 'Station To Station' 'Cracked Actor' and a whole bunch of 'Goldens' as though he had never stopped playing these songs. Then to top it off , he smoothly radicalized into 'I'm Afraid Of Americans'.

The rest of the band were wreathed in smiles, Gail commenting, "This is like being inside Living History." Bowie himself commented, "Wow, is this band hot or what? If people weren't around in 1974, this will give them a damn good idea of what we were about. You've heard the bootlegs, now get the real deal" he grinned.

Bowie and the band, with Earl Slick on guitar, will debut on the 16th of June somewhere in New York City."

I know the great majority of you will understand the importance of this report, but for the benefit of some of you youngsters out there, (Hi A_Girl and Steve K) go here for a little bit of history.
