The Stars Come Out For David Bowie In London

London, W1 - The Astoria on London's Charing Cross Road was THE place to be on December 2nd.

Rock legend David Bowie played his last London show of the millennium to a sell out, star studded audience. It certainly proved to be an event not to be missed. David performed a set of classics, which spanned over three decades including tracks from his latest critically acclaimed album 'hours?'. These new songs sounded completely at home in a set that featured tracks such as Rebel Rebel, Ashes To Ashes, Life On Mars and Drive In Saturday. The amazing star-studded evening did not stop there. Friends and celebrities alike joined David to celebrate his one off show at the nearby newly opened Soho hip nightspot 'Pop'.

Pete Townshend talked at length about how he had enjoyed seeing David performing his classic material in such style. Norman Cook was chuffed to meet David and happy to talk about the latest developments at Brighton FC. Neil Tennant (Pet Shop Boys) chatted with Mr Bowie as did Bob Geldof. Sir Bob and David discussed fishing at one point in their conversation. Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall plus friends huddled in a corner with David. Brian Molko from Placebo popped up all over the place, various members of The Cure lurked. Soul diva Beverley Knight, the glamorous Skin from Skunk Anansie and bassist Gail Anne Dorsey all lined up with David for pics and found plenty to talk about amongst themselves. Boy George, his hip protege Amanda Ghost and Gary Numan were spotted, as was Shakespeare In Love actor Joseph Fiennes chatting with Lock, Stock star Nick Moran. Paul Heard from M People was in evidence at the Astoria, Spice girl Mel G and husband Jimmy Gulzar turned up late and danced the night away at the newly open hip night-spot 'Pop'.

Yes it was all happening in Soho and the mob scenes like something out of a Ricky Martin scenario had to be seen to be believed, when David left to return to his hotel in the early hours of the morning.

Next up for Bowie is the January 2000 release of 'Survive' one of the key tracks from 'hours?'. Be on the lookout for the video directed by Walter Stern who also worked with David on the mesmerising 'Thursday's Child' clip.

Doin It In Denmark

http://www.billboard.com has posted up a review of David's Denmark gig.

Here is an excerpt:

David Bowie sauntered onto the stage of Copenhagen's Vega club yesterday with a big smile on his face and several tricks up his sleeve. For the next two hours, the 52-year-old rocker entertained the 1,500-strong crowd with songs old and new, taking his tongue out of his cheek for each number, then putting it firmly back for introductions and between-song patter.

Ed note: don't be thrown off by Charles Ferro's recap of the show. The show in fact did end with I'm Afraid of Americans, NOT Young Americans.

London Astoria

Well everybody is still talking about the David Bowie Astoria show that took place on London's Charing Cross Road last Thursday December 2nd. And rightly so, it really was an event that will stay with me while I still have all of my faculties. But just as an extra aid to help you keep the memory alive here are some links for more pictures from me, Total Blam Blam, and some wonderfully atmospheric audience shots from BowieNet members Electric Blue and Bob Phillips.

Unless you have been in hibernation for the past week, you will know that the evening didn't end there though. Friends and celebrities alike joined David to celebrate his one off show at the nearby newly opened Soho hip night-spot 'Pop'. And, needless to say, yours truly was there to lap up the proceedings and force down the free booze while blending effortlessly with the assembled superstars.

Among those present were Pete Townshend, who talked at length about how he had enjoyed seeing David perform his classic material in such style. Norman Cook (that's Fatboy Slim to you buddy) made it quite clear how chuffed he was to meet David, and was happy to talk to anybody who would listen about the latest developments at Brighton FC. Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant chatted with Mr Bowie, as did Bob Geldof. Sir Bob and David discussed fishing at one point in their conversation. Look out for hand-spun trout-fishing flies in a new line of accessories available on BowieNet soon!

Mr Michael Philip Jagger and Jerry Hall plus friends huddled in a corner with David. A typically boisterous Mick and David didn't miss the opportunity to play up to the cameras while a bemused Mr Townshend looked on and smiled. Brian Molko from Placebo popped up all over the place while various members of The Cure lurked. Soul diva Beverley Knight, the glamorous Skin from Skunk Anansie and the most beautiful bassist on Earth, Gail Anne Dorsey, all lined up with David for pics and found plenty to talk about amongst themselves.

Boy George, with hip protege Amanda Ghost and Pam Hogg in tow, sported the biggest Leopard Skin hat these eyes have ever seen, and he even managed a quick chat with Mrs Blam Blam. Gary Numan and Billy Bragg were spotted, but not necessarily together. And Shakespeare In Love actor Joseph Fiennes turned almost as many heads as my good self. Difference was that he turned them just by being Joseph Fiennes, while I managed it with strange yelping noises! Mr. Fiennes chatted with equally good-looking Lock, Stock and doo-dahs star Nick Moran.

Comic genius Lard was spotted being very funny, and Cerys Matthews from Catatonia swept through in a full-length leather skirt. Paul Heard from M People was in evidence at the Astoria, as was another Paul, Mr King the MTV presenter. Favourite of Mrs Dawn Kinder (who couldn't attend due to illness), Richard E Grant was also spotted at the show. Spice girl Mel G with husband Jimmy Gulzar turned up late at 'Pop' and danced the night away at the seventies-flavoured club less than 48 hours before the start of the Spice Girls' Christmas tour.

Pandemonium ensued as David left the establishment for his hotel in the early hours, grown men (some in full drag) wept, and women threw themselves under the wheels of his get-away vehicle. David chatted to a few lucky patient fans as he waved his driver on to the sound of crunching bones, a useful diversion for me as I managed to leave the scene without any attention drawn to my escape whatsoever. Can't handle too many more nights like that at my age.

Here is a press release, some press clippings from British papers (London Times story | Telegraph story)

Superfan Blaggs Freebie!

'God knows he's good'

This lovely heart-warming tale was sent in by Italian SuperFan ENZO, and it just goes to prove whata diamond geezer Mr Bowie really is. What follows is Enzo's account of his....well let's let him do thetalking. Pictures and captions by our friendly neighbourhood snapper, Total Blam Blam.

If you ever had doubts about David Bowie caring for his fans you should read what follows.

David bowie said to Eric (his security): 'Sort this gentleman out', and he added 'definitely'.... I could not believe it.

Would you like to know more ? Read the whole story . It might take a couple of minutes of your timebut is worth it ! The whole of the conversation stays impressed in my mind word by word.

"I went to the Virgin Megastore to queue for a Bowie autograph, # 65 in the queue. I did not have aticket for the Astoria (I had been queuing for hours outside the Astoria on the day they sold thetickets, like many other fans I did not get any). But I was going to meet David Bowie for the first timeand felt happy anyway. I brought with me my Gisborne ticket (Yes, I was going to New Zealand andthe ticket was sent to me long before the cancellation).

I did not know what to do with the Gisborne ticket: 'Shall I ask him to sign it?' But I thought it did notmake any sense and also it might have upset him, so I definitely decided not to do that.

But somehow, I wanted Bowie to know that I was a fan who would have gone to the other side of theglobe to see him in concert. Talking to a few very nice people I met at the Megastore jokingly I said:'Shall I ask David Bowie if I can use the Gisborne ticket for tonight's concert?'. 'I think he will laugh'someone said. After this answer I thought 'Let's see what happens'. I would not have dared and havethe courage to put that question seriously to him, but without meaning it, in a joking way I took theopportunity when he was signing the Nomad Soul copy. (I was pleasantly surprised to find out thatthe BowieNet took a picture. Yes, I am the one on the second picture of the Megastore signing andthe ticket Bowie is checking is not a tube ticket, but it is my Gisborne ticket).

My voice was altered and unstable when, after shaking hands, I started talking to David Bowie.

'I am Enzo' I mumbled. 'Andrew?' he replied. 'No. Enzo. I am Italian', I said and he signed the NomadSoul copy.

His friendly attitude made me feel more comfortable: 'Can I ask you a question?' I said. 'Yes of course'he replied. 'I do not have a ticket for tonight. Can I use this one.' I said jokingly.

He took the ticket from my hands and after a moment he replied: 'Is this your ticket?'.

'Yes that's my ticket', was my firm answer this time.

'Let me have a look at that, you're havin' a laugh ain't ya?'
'You sure this is kosher? It looks a bit moody to me son'
'OK... You're in if you can say ooo ooo ooo, like a monkey'

He turned his head and told Eric (his security): 'Sort this gentleman out' and he added 'definitely'.

I could not believe it. 'Thank you very much', I said while stretching my hand, he stretched his hand, and while shaking hands with me he replied 'My pleasure'.

Soon after, Eric asked me :'What can I do for you?'. 'I told him I do not have a ticket for tonight' I said.'I do no have a ticket but write down your name and give it to me', he replied.

I wrote my full name down (Vincenzo Tanferna) and gave it to him waiting for what to do next. Soonafter the Virgin Megastore security people told me to move away. It took some time to convince themthat I was waiting to know what to do next, and that Eric had my name. At the end I was told by oneof them to look for Eric at the Astoria.

I saw Eric outside the Astoria and he said that he would let me in when they opened. When theyopened the problem was that the people at the entrance told me that they could not contact Eric(probably they did not believe me either) and they asked me to call him on his mobile. Starting to geta bit nervous I told them I did not have his mobile number, so they asked me to look for him at theback door entrance. Even there it was difficult to convince them, but eventually I wrote down myname and gave it to someone who looked more close to management. When Eric came down he justsaid: 'Come in' and told me 'this is a present from David' while guiding me (I do not remember hisexact words but this is what he meant).

Amazing, isn't it? Very nice present indeed, also considering that I was 38 years old just 2 daysearlier (30th November). I have only one regret: I wish I asked Eric to have the opportunity to have apicture taken with Bowie backstage: I was too shy.

Thank you again Mr. David Bowie. I will never forget your kindness..."

Vh1 Artist Of The Year

VOTE!!

Just when you thought it was safe...Here is another Artist of the Year Vote, this one brought to you from VH-1.

Bowie, along with the likes of Whitney Houston, Cher, Tom Petty, Dave Matthews , Lenny Kravitz, Jewel, Sting, and more have all been nominated.

Here's what VH1 had to say about Bowie:

"Bowie's 23rd album, hours, marked his return to simple songwriting. Before we start talking about Ziggy the low-tech folk singer, though, let's note that the tunes were recorded to accompany an upcoming video game called Omikron: The Nomad Soul, and that hours was initially only available online. This is one man who will never fall to earth."

GO VOTE FOR BOWIE!!

Update Of 11/17/99 Changes Update ;-)

In an update on The Chris Welch book, 'Changes', dated 11/17/99, I reported on a US version of the book with a completely different title and cover published as 'We Could Be Heroes', and I also claimed that although: "I've not yet seen this version of the book, it appears to have an extra 60 pages when compared to the UK copy."

What I in fact meant was, that even though the US version of the book has a completely different title and cover, the content is identical, including the page count! Mis-information from my supplier is the culprit here, and even though you may see the US version of the book advertised as having 208 pages, as opposed to the considerably smaller 144 paged UK version, believe me they are identical, apart from the aforementioned cover and title differences. Which just goes to prove the old saying: "A bird in the bush..." etc, etc.

Virgin Megastore Signing 12/04/99

"He asked for an autograph"...so did his mates and a few hundred others!

The queues started in the early 'hours...' of Friday night / Saturday morning producing some concern on the faces of the local constabulary, but they needn't have worried as the event passed without a hitch and the larger percentage of those that attended got the scribble they were after.

In a session that started at 4:00pm, and lasted just over an hour, most of the lucky early birds managed to receive a brief audience with Mr B, but the necessary evil of the conveyor-belt-turn-around still didn't cater for all of those that queued, including some BowieNet members who had been forewarned but didn't get there early enough! Hallo Susan S ;-)

David laughed, joked and ponced fags* throughout, (even if they were mainly mine) and, in an incredible disregard for his own credibility, even posed with the likes of Rednik and Steve K! Now that is generous.

For a few more pictures taken using my own shaky hand and failing eyesight, join the queue above.

*To clear up a potentially embarrassing translation error, I should point out that to 'ponce a fag' in the UK is the equivalent of asking for a cigarette in the US of A!
