Bowie Ball

Finally! We have posted up new images, videos, and journals from the infamous BowieNet Ball, held in New York City back in late May, 1999.

The Ball was the brainchild of several hardcore BowieNet chatters who wanted to meet "in the flesh." The hostess of the Ball, Leezacan be seen here explaining how the ball came to be.

More videos will be posted in the coming weeks.

Where did the videos come from? If you remember back last month, ZDTV did a special 3 part series on Bowie. Part of the ZDTV piece was made up of member interviews taken at the Ball. Well, BowieNet got our hands on the out-takes, and we will be posting them in the coming weeks in this new BowieNet Ball archive area.

If you have any photos or journals you want to share, please feel free to send em in. We will post em up in this new section. Enjoy!

He Gets To Everyone

Apparently Bowie was an influence on Ricky Martin. This according to Martin himself. In a recent interview, part of which was on Yahoo News, this nugget was revealed:> 'Martin also has several rocking post-"Livin' La Vida Loca" singles in the pipeline, including a duet with Madonna.

"I grew up listening to Boston, Cheap Trick, Journey and David Bowie," said the ex-Menudo member from Puerto Rico. "When I was a kid, my brothers and I were all into rock, rock, rock."

Does this also bode another duet in the offing for our wonky-eyed hero?

Visconti, Rustic Overtones, And Bowie

Last month, BowieNet reported that David Bowie was working with Tony Visconti and up-and-coming New England band Rustic Overtones. Here is a brief update.

Earlier this week, Tony Visconti invited a few BowieNet staff to attend the final night in the studio with himself and Rustic Overtones. We were treated to several tracks and got to watch Visconti work his magic with the soundboards! (FYI: very impressive)

Bowie has made contributions on 2 songs for the forthcoming Rustic Overtones album, which is due out on September 28th, on Arista Records.

David sang the choruses and added spoken word to the track "Sector Z", a humorous "message" to people on other planets.

The second track, entitled "Man Without A Mouth", has David adding some backing vocals that are very haunting indeed.

If you haven't already, check out this special Rustic Overtones section. You can also check the band out on their website: www.rusticovertones.com

Omikron Review

Check out a new review on Omikron from the Adrenaline Vault, one of the top gaming destinations on the Internet.

The Adrenaline Vault is an independent source of gaming information and is considered by many to be the ultimate gamers website.

Here is an excerpt of the review:
It is no secret that David Bowie has been contributing his talents, both in terms of music and integration as an interactive NPC. Upon completing the first significant clump of gameplay, Bowie's theme song for the title plays while the camera swoops through the city as though it were filming the introduction for a 21st Century Miami Vice. It was a nice reward.

Also, don't forget to have a gander at the 28 new character personas posted in the BowieNet Omikron area.

Garson Gets "stigmatized

Here are a few words from Mike Garson abouthis collaboration with Billy Corgan on the"Stigmata" film score:

Composing the score with Billy Corgan was anextraordinary experience. We worked 28 daysstraight for 12 hours per day. Billy is an extremely creative and musically gifted artist. The interaction between us was superb. Each of our ideas and insights really coalesced into one unified effort.

In addition to the score, we also wrote the end credit theme, "Identify," which is performed by Natalie Imbruglia on the soundtrack.

One final note...Life has its serendipitous ways of creating interesting effects: I met Billy Corgan through David Bowie. Ironically, Bowie contributed a song to the soundtrack album, as well. Small world! - Mike Garson

Mike Garson will join Bowie in the upcoming VH-1 STORYTELLERS session. Get all the latest on Mike Garson at his website: www.nowmusic.net/.

Placebo And David Bowie Join Forces For New Ep

"Without You I'm Nothing" released in August

David Bowie joins Placebo on a new recording of the band's "Without You I'm Nothing", to be released as a limited edition gatefold CD EP by Hut Recordings on Monday 16th August.

The single is produced by Steve Osborne and features mixes from UNKLE,Americruiser and Brothers in Rhythm.

The track, recorded in New York earlier this year cements a relationship that started when Placebo supported David Bowie on his European tour in 1996.Early the next year Placebo were invited by Bowie to play at his 50th birthday party in New York's Madison Square Garden.

Bowie also joined Placebo on stage to perform "Twentieth Century Boy" at the 1999 Brit Awards in February this year, followed by an appearance with the band at their Irving Plaza show in New York the following month.

The original version of " Without You I'm Nothing" is the title track to Placebo's current album, released in October last year, The album has subsequently sold over 250,000 copies in the UK, with a further 800,000 sales around the rest of the world.

The new EP, credited to PLACEBO FEATURING DAVID BOWIE, will be released only on CD (FLOORCD10 ), with 20,000 copies available. "Without You I'm Nothing" also contains a web link to the band's site, plus enhanced "live" imagery, thus making the release ineligible for the UK single chart.
