(When I was writing this, it was June 7th, 2001, the 4th anniversary of my Bowie
concert I have seen! Reason enough to finally start with my "tour journals"....so
here we go!) Today is June 7th!!!!! Probably wonīt mean much to most people, but it means everything to me. 4 years ago I saw David live for the first time, and thatīs when I started to be a real fan. Of course I already kind of liked him before, otherwise I wouldnīt have decided to go to that concert, but I would have never called myself a fan back then. After I missed all the shows of the Outside tour unfortunately, I finally got my chance in 1997. Once I learned that David would headline the Go Bang! festival on June 7th in Lübeck, Germany, I bought a ticket instantly, and convinced my friend Britta to go with me, since there were The Prodigy playing as well, whom she really liked quite a bit. Another friend of mine (the one who got me started on DB at first) got a ticket for her birthday, but she decided that sheīd rather have the money instead, and didnīt go! Her loss!!! I went to Lübeck in the morning, all on my own, cause my friend already went there by train the day before. I almost didnīt make it in time to meet her, cause my car broke down on the way, and it took an hour until someone finally helped me with it! But luckily I still met her at the hostel, and everything was fine. We took the bus to the festival site, and arrived there all excited! It was a lovely day, not too hot and not too cold, and dry! There werenīt that many people yet, and we just lay down in the grass. Didnīt even notice that the bands were already starting, cause it sounded like a soundcheck, hehe. There were bands like Be, Apollo 440, etc. It was very easy to get near the front even later on, cause people were coming and leaving again after they saw their fave band, like Rage Against The Machine, New Model Army, and so on, who didnīt interest me much at all. At least I thought I was close enough to the front then, in about 5th row to the left side. Turned out to be a mistake though :) After a while I learned that David wouldnīt be the headliner after all, but Prodigy would perform after him, but I didnīt really care too much... I was really pretty excited, and met a girl who was even more excited...She got a sign that said "David, you are my Hero", and told me that her dad was a big fan already, and always wanted to see him live, but never could, so she was kind of fulfilling that goal finally.(sadly she was a bit too excited, really started to cry when he came on, and got kind of a break down, so she had to get pulled out of the crowd soon after he started! Finally all the bands that didnīt interest me the slightest were over, and the big moment arrived! David entered the stage, with spiky orange hair and a goatee, dressed all in white, and sang "Quicksand". I will never forget that moment! It was so beautiful. I was enchanted at once. though I didnīt even know that song back then, and tried to get closer to the stage. (even though I was a bit disappointed first that he wasnīt wearing any latex and satin, ;0) I was hooked immediately, and all songs that followed were great too (set-list). I loved every second..but "Quicksand" will forever remain the most special song of that day, cause it was the very first one. At one time during the show he really fooled around with his mic between his legs! WHOA! Sexy hexy!! Guess that really got me as well! (though one stupid girl shouted at him because of that, AFTER he was gone, and rushed off...tsktsk, guess she was quite prudish...) After about 100 minutes his set was over, and he left without one single encore :(( Well, now after I can compare, I think that this concert wasnīt really his very best, and the audience was pretty lame imo, at least where I was standing..and didnīt even scream for an encore! But it was still enough to let me feel like being hypnotized! He got such an amazing charisma! I also tried to take pictures with a disposable camera to catch the magic, but of course most of them didnīt turn out very well. With one exception when I asked a professionell photographer if he could take one for me! Ok, after David was gone, Prodigy came on, and my friend finally woke up again. She had been so exhausted from the bands before already, that she actually slept during most of DBs performance! I couldnīt believe it!!! Well, at least she woke up during "Iīm Afraid of Americans" and even admitted that she really liked that song. Prodigy actually were pretty cool as well, the way they were storming on stage, pretty energetic those guys....And this of course was the best part for my friend. After everything was over, I bought my first two Bowie posters at the exit, and we took a taxi back to the hostel. This had been the happiest day of my life, until then! And I knew I had to see David again as soon as possible!!! :0))))) |
