The Man Who Sold The World Nov '70

The Man Who Sold The World

The Man Who Sold The World was first released in November 1970 on the Mercury label in the US with the cartoon sleeve pictured here created by Mike Weller.
In April 1971 it was released in the UK on the Mercury label with a striking photograph by Keef (Keith MacMillan) of David wearing a dress.
Mercury released The Man Who Sold The World with yet another cover in Germany. Commonly known as the round cover this version is the rarest of the three Mercury releases.
RCA reissued the album worldwide (along with Space Oddity) in 1972 with a black and white Ziggy-era cover shot taken by Brian Ward.

The Supermen

Lyrics:

When all the world was very young
And mountain magic heavy hung
The supermen would walk in file
Guardians of a loveless isle
And gloomy browed with superfear their tragic
endless lives
Could heave nor sigh
In solemn, perverse serenity, wondrous beings chained to life

Strange games they would play then
No death for the perfect men
Life rolls into one for them
So softly a supergod cries

Where all were minds in uni-thought
Powers weird by mystics taught
No pain, no joy, no power too great
Colossal strength to grasp a fate
Where sad-eyed mermen tossed in slumbers
Nightmare dreams no mortal mind could hold
Man would tear his brother's flesh, a chance to die,
To turn to mold.

Far out in the red-sky
Far out from the sad eyes
Strange, mad celebration
So softly a supergod dies

Lyrics:

We passed upon the stair, we spoke of was and
when
Although I wasn't there, he said I was his friend
Which came as some surprise I spoke into his
eyes
I thought you died alone, a long long time ago

Oh no, not me
I never lost control
You're face to face
With the Man Who Sold The World

I laughed and shook his hand, and made my way
back home
I searched for form and land, for years & years I
roamed
I gazed a gazely stare at all the millions here
We must have died alone, a long long time ago

Who knows? not me
We never lost control
You're face to face
With the Man Who Sold The World.

She Shook Me Cold

Lyrics:

We met upon a hill, the night was cool & still
She sucked my dormant will
Mother, she blew my brain. I will go back again
My God, she shook me cold.

I had no time to spare, I grabbed her golden hair
And threw her to the ground.
Father, she caved my head. Oh Lord, things she said
My God, she should be told.

I was very smart, broke the gentle hearts
Of many young virgins
I was quick on the ball, left them so lonely
They'd just give up trying.
Then she took my head, smashed it up,
Kept my young blood rising,
Crushed me mercilessly, kept me going around
So she don't know how I crave her so

I'll give me love in vain, to reach that peak again
We met upon a hill
Mother, she blew my brain, I will go back again
My God, she shook me cold.

Saviour Machine

Lyrics:

President Joe once had a dream
The world held his hand, gave their pledge
So he told them his scheme for a Saviour Machine

They called it the Prayer, its answer was law
Its logic stopped war, gave them food,
How they adored till it cried in its boredom,

'Please don't believe in me, please disagree with
me
Life is too easy, a plague seems quite feasible now,
or maybe a war, or I may kill you all.

Don't let me stay, don't let me stay.
My logic says burn so send me away
Your minds are too green, I despise all I've seen
You can't stake your lives on a Saviour Machine

I need you flying, and I'll show that dying
Is living beyond reason, sacred dimension of time
I perceive every sign, I can steal every mind

Don't let me stay, don't let me stay
My logic says burn so send me away
Your minds are too green, I despise all I've seen
You can't stake your lives on a Saviour Machine
