Maarit 5

Maarit's next album Elämän maku ("A taste of life") was released in 1981. The album featured nine new songs and was another one of her albums with Hurmerinta-only compositions. Sami is again the main composer but there's also one composition by Maarit.

An accurate description of the music I guess is that it is soulful, dancable pop. There's horn sections here and there, which had become one of the trademarks on Maarit's albums by now. Another trademark of course is Sami's guitar playing and his distinctive guitar solos. Sami released a Jimi Hendrix -styled solo album in the eighties under the name Sam Haze and I've read he's been invited to play in different Jimi conventions around the world.

Two singles were released from Elämän maku album. The first featured the songs Apilankukka ("Clover flower") and Kesäyö ("Summer night") and the second the songs Hämärät kaupungit ("Dark Cities") and Elämän merellä ("On the sea of life").

The opening track Kesäyö with lyrics by Mikko Alatalo sounds like a perfect radio hit and is obviously one of the best-known tracks of the album. Track number two Laulu ystävälle ("Song for a friend") is composed by Maarit and also features lyrics by her. Kapakkaenkeli ("Honky Tonk Angel") is more like a ballad, where the woman narrator wants to remind a loud-mouth male character to choose his words a little better when talking about women: "We are humans too".

Ero ("Separation") is another slower number, a song about divorce, told from a woman's point of view.

Amazingly, Hämärät kaupungit is the only track selected to her 2-cd collection released in 2002. The same track was also included on her "20 favourites" collection from 1995, but not a single song from the album was included on her 2-cd live album released in 1999.

I guess this just reflects the common fact among most of the artists whose recorded catalogue spans over a longer period, with many hit albums and classic songs. From the collections and live albums, some of the favourites always has to be left out.
