OK, I couldn't care less about Nickelback. But I found that news piece on NPR last night intriguing...about MIkey Smith, a student in Canada who mixed Someday and You Remind Me together (with some editing, I've heard) to make one song. After playing around with Bowie songs in the mash up last year, it didn't really seem like a big deal to me, but lots of people are taking notice of the sameness of these Nickelback songs. If you google You Remind Me of Someday, you'll get several links to sites that have posted the song, though I tried to download them and couldn't this morning. Hmm.
Anyway, even though he's very upset about all of this musicians ripping themselves off, to me it's just not a big deal. And it isn't anything new. There is so much mediocrity in the world already, what's a little more? My daughter listens to all these girl singers who all sound the same, it's just part of the landscape. Though I think trying to track Avril Lavigne with that Nickelback song was going a little too far. Maybe it's a Canadian thing.
What I really wanted to get to was Mikey Smith's home page, so I could get to the source of all this. Plus, at the end of the NPR story, they play a clip from his own CD, a song bemoaning the demise of decent music (haven't we been hearing this for a few decades already?). Smith's music was kind of good, I would like to hear more of it. It's not super innovative or anything, but it's better than Nickelback!
Maybe Mikey Smith should listen to Arcade Fire, and he'll feel better about Canadian music.

back at work for two days and the stress is mounting. not so much from work but just the rush of daily life.
It was 73 degrees here today. I went for a long walk with a coworker as we are trying to get back in shape. It's very uncool to work at the gym and be overweight.
I got a kick out of wearing shorts on January 4th. One of my friends said, "sure isn't Ithaca!"
