Welcome, Spring

March 21, 2009 11:48PM

Obviously I'm pretty far behind. Perhaps I should take a few days to catch up around here with all the friends I've been neglecting -- not on purpose, I assure you! -- before I make another new post. But in the meantime, I decided to write another 13-line seasonal poem as I did last Fall. I'm not the world's greatest poet. In fact, I've always been rather awful. But I thought it turned out surprisingly well last time and just wanted to try my hand at it again. So here goes:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TIME OF SPRING

Raindrops fall heavy from the sky
While thunder rolls in soft reply
Blossoms of pink, purple and white
Spread their petals at morning’s light
Beneath the grass of yellow-green
Dandelions stir from their dreams
And every branch on every tree
Adorns itself with tiny leaves
These are days when the world is new
And summer’s promise awaits its cue
With the whisper of all the things
That, in time, the promise brings
In a time, a Time of Spring

She Sells Chocolate Sea Shells

March 19, 2009 11:36PM

So I went out to get the mail yesterday, and what should I receive but a bubble mailer direct from Key West, Florida. Our long lost friend Brenda of the blog Southernmost Point had sent me a surprise gift. What a coincidence! I was just thinking of her a few days ago, wondering how she was. I hurried inside to open it, and out fell a package of candy-coated chocolate sea shells (as pictured above).

Oooooooooooo...! That is so cool! What will they think of next? And I don't have to tell you how I feel about chocolate, which is definitely on my top 5 list of the best things in life. Not to mention that the sea is the source of all peace and contentment. Put them together and you have bliss on a scale that makes heaven seem like a letdown.

Then I read the note that came with it. "Just thought about you when I saw these... Hope you are well... Hugs to Ayla..." THEN the real kicker. "I wish you would join FACEBOOK!"

Hey, I've heard there is a "movement" to get me to sign up there. Now you're using chocolates to lure me? I must admit it is a brilliant strategy. Chocolate to me is like kryptonite to Superman. Will... to resist... failing...

Alright already! I'll sign up there just as soon as I get the time. I can't promise to use it much, though. And I should warn you that if Mitch Woods doesn't immediately say, "Where have you been all my life? I'm coming back to Fort Wayne RIGHT NOW to be with you!" I'm holding you all personally responsible.

Happy Wearin' O' The Green!

March 17, 2009 05:45PM

May your pockets be heavy
Your heart be light
And may good luck pursue you
Each morning and night

Like the warmth of the sun
And the light of the day,
May the luck of the Irish
shine bright on your way.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Happy St. Patrick's Day, everyone! No, I'm not really Irish, but then on some level, we're ALL part-Irish on March 17. Ayla, my cocker spaniel, even has a button that declares her to be part-Irish Setter. I pin it to her shamrock bandana. See, what I mean? Some part of me has to be Irish to do something as silly as that.

To help celebrate, here's an amusing link you might enjoy:
THE LEPRECHAUN HALL OF SHAME

Sample text from exhibit A, "Lucky" the Lucky Charms cereal leprechaun:
As Lucky knows, there's nothing magical about this breakfast food, it's delicious for the same reason it gives him such a buzz: it's packed with sugar. Sure, he's always very up in the tv ads, but you should see him when the rush wears off. Then it's back to ingesting his other favorite product (pint after pint after pint of Guinness) and badgering the poor Trix rabbit with how much better life was in the old days and in the old country.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now to conclude our movie, The Matchmaker. The first segment in the first link (in which the Massachusetts Senator meets his phony Irish relatives for the cameras) is perhaps my favorite of the entire film. Absolutely classic.

THE MATCHMAKER - Part 8 (9:04)
THE MATCHMAKER - Part 9 (9:24)
THE MATCHMAKER - Part 10 (6:20)
THE MATCHMAKER - Part 11 (8:21)
