Yesterday we helped Adam and Zoe move into their adorable new house. It's a terrific place with high ceilings and all sorts of nifty little details. They are going to have a BLAST decorating that place. They have a huge, unfinished attic which is going to be the coolest private library outside of the rich people's homes.
Adam's messed up his back pretty badly. Crappy timing as they have stuff to arrange at the new digs, paint to put up and carpet to tear out. I only hope that common sense wins out over the need to get things done and Adam lets himself heal completely before doing any of it.
After the moving, Joe and I had a "birthday weekend" sushi buffet and came home to watch a double feature of "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset." So romantic!

On Friday, after work, Mary and I ran to Target to get Joe some birthday presents. When I got home, there was a beautiful harvest moon. IT was unreal. Looked more like a huge set painting than an actual work of nature. Like it was going to crash into us at any moment in all it's orange lovelyness. Joe agreed that this was a wonderful 34th (aka: 7th) birthday gift from mother nature.

In a couple of hours, we're going to a convention party downtown. First, we're having dinner at Harrah's with the ladies from work, then we're over to (egads) Margaritaville for the vendor sponsored event.
I'm looking forward to seeing the ladies cut up, but not to hearing all the Jimmy Buffet hell they play at that most tacky of tourist traps.

At work this week:
Jeff had his grandmother's funeral
Henrietta's new-born grandaughter was readmitted to the hospital with pneumonia
Donna's four month old grandson went to the hospital with some horrible virus
and...
worst of all...
Ms. Sylvia's husband was diagnosed with lung cancer. His right lung is completely covered and it's spread into his chest.
Ms. Syl is the sweetest, most grandmotherly person. She's all hugs. It just breaks my heart to know that she's sitting there at home trying to be strong for everyone when she knows that she's going to have to watch the man she loves and has spent the majority of her life with die an agonizing death.

On the much lighter side of things, I'm having a bitch of a time finding a decent "grown-up craft camp" for Mom's and my girls' trip this summer. One that offered PMC classes in the magazine, doesn't even mention it on their site. Another wakes you up at 7 am Eastern time (that's six am in the real world) to the sounds of Danish folk singing.

Cornel West did his lecture and book signing on Thursday. He was supposed to be DONE at eight, but didn't even start the book signing until ten. By the time we could pack up the few books we didn't sell, I was dead on my feet.
The event was so big, they ended up having to turn five hundred people away at the door. I don't think UNO's ever had such problems with a lecture.

Later this afternoon, JHoe and I are going over to Mary and Jeremy's to help them tear out carpeting and look at the latest cool piece of history they've found in the house. This is a WWII era log book from the USS Enterprise.

Had a nice V Day yesterday, playing one-up on the sappy gifts. I won by a long shot with the balloons and chocolates delivered (after stopping at every office on the way, to ensure EVERYBODY knew he was getting something) to "Sugarplum" at his office.

Mum's ex-whatever may have killed one of her three week old kittens. I found this out after a late night wake-up call from Donald claiming that my mother has alzheimers. No doctor was involved in this positive diagnosis. Donald based this solely on the fact that she yells at him when he does trifling little things like admitting to having slept with intraveneous drug using prostitutes while with her and her coming home to find one of the new born kittens missing (he was house sitting).
Anyway, I called Mom after the weird and disturbing wake-up and found out that the kitten is nowhere in the house and must be dead, as newborns need milk every few hours. three week old kittens don't get further than ten feet from their mothers before they fall asleep and end up carried back to the nesting area.

Jeff came back from his grandmother's funeral this afternoon and had to, almost immediately, go back home. The usual professorial bullshit (claiming to have ordered a book for a class that sent in a "no text" adoption) set him off. For a second there, we thought he was going to snap. Instead, he just went back home. It was for the best, really.

Joe's boss is letting him grow a beard. And I used to like her. It's in that "recently homeless" phase but expected to reach full "Grisley Adams" in the next few weeks.

Almost done with Bone Woman. It's refreshing to read about someone getting so much joy out of such grusome and grueling work. This woman was at the site of every genocide, since the early 90's, digging up remains.

Cornell West is speaking at the School on Thursday and I'm working it. Promises to be an interesting evening.

Oh god, I want to play with this stuff: www.pmcconnection.com/shop/product-list.php?category=20&;name=Clay

I don't know how the resident jackass was raised, but I'd call "fuck off" to be fairly nasty.
